Asymmetric Organocatalysis: From Biomimetic Concepts to Applications in Asymmetric Synthesis
Albrecht Berkessel , and Harald Gröger Manufacturer: Wiley-VCH ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3527305173 |
Book Description
Asymmetric catalysis represents still one of the major challenges in modern organic chemistry. Besides the well-established asymmetric metal-complex-catalysed syntheses and biocatalysis, the use of "pure" organic catalysts turned out to be an additional efficient tool for the synthesis of chiral building blocks. In this handbook, the experienced authors from academia and industry provide the first overview of the important use of such metal-free organic catalysts in organic chemistry. With its comprehensive description of numerous reaction types, e.g., nucleophilic substitution and addition reactions as well as cycloadditions and redox reactions, this book targets organic chemists working in industry and academia, and deserves a place in every laboratory.

Oxygenases and Model Systems (Catalysis by Metal Complexes)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0792342402 |
Book Description
Oxygenases have been the subject of much study and are of great interest and application. Biomimetic chemistry of oxygenases has yielded clarification of enzyme structures and reaction mechanisms and has also led to the development of synthetic oxygenation processes. This volume contains 8 chapters written by leading researchers which together present an overview of di- and mono-oxygenases and their model systems from the point of view of functions, structures and mechanisms. An up-to-date clarification of structures around active centres of heme- and nonheme-oxygenases is given with reference to the design of model complexes. Various contributions also discuss in detail the formation, structure and reactivity of metal-oxygen and metal-substrate species in both enzyme and model systems. The contents of the volume address the interface between bioinorganic chemistry and homogeneous catalysis and contains much to emphasize the importance of catalytic studies in bio- and biomimetic chemistry.

Learning from Nature How to Design New Implantable Biomaterials:From Biomineralization Fundamentals to Biomimetic Materials and Processing Routes: Proceedings ... II: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry)
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1402026471 |
Book Description
The biomineralization and biomaterials research communities have not been working side by side in the past few years. To our knowledge, no book has addressed before this topic in such an integrated and "looking forward" perspective. There is, therefore, a necessity for a book that would address, in an integrated way, topics that go from understanding biomineralization processes of different mineralized tissues (that means: not only bone, tooth, etc.) to the use of that science to engineer new biomimetic processes and materials. In fact, only an understanding of the relevant fundamentals and a simultaneous application oriented view will lead to the design of new biomimetic materials and processing routes (including production of biomimetic coatings). There is almost no training content on most of the books that are aimed at presenting new breakthroughs on biomineralization science. So, this book will constitute a complimentary tool as it seemed to be the best forum to educate and brainstorming on this area of such strategic importance.

Book Description
1877. Illustrated. From the Preface: The object of this treatise is to point out to teachers of physical science, and to others who may be interested in experimentation, the usefulness of the Magic Lantern, and especially of the Porte Lumiere, and a few other pieces of apparatus which can mostly extemporized. With these a surprisingly large number of experiments in every department of physics may be performed, and every department of science and art may be illustrated; and the illustrations may be upon a scale of magnitude which will surprise one who has never witnessed them. The manipulation of the apparatus is not at all difficult, and no one need fear he will not succeed in doing anything described in the book, provided that at first he masters the simple conditions of projection with a single lens and with a condenser.

Earthly Joys: A Novel
Philippa Gregory Manufacturer: Touchstone ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0743272528 |
Book Description
Whether he is nurturing a single rare seedling into a blossoming tree or planning acres of exquisitely conceived royal gardens, John Tradescant's fame and skill as a gardener are unsurpassed in seventeenth-century England. But it is Tradescant's clear-sighted honesty and loyalty that make him an invaluable servant, and in his role as informal confidant during garden strolls with Sir Robert Cecil, adviser to King James I, he witnesses the making of history, from the Gunpowder Plot to the accession of King Charles I and the growing animosity between Parliament and court.
Tradescant's talents soon come to the attention of the most powerful man in the country, the irresistible Duke of Buckingham, the lover of King Charles I. Tradescant has always been faithful to his masters, but Buckingham is unlike any he has ever known: flamboyant, outrageously charming, and utterly reckless. Every certainty upon which Tradescant has based his life -- his love of his wife and children, his passion for his work, his loyalty to his country -- is shattered as he follows Buckingham to court, to war, and to the forbidden territories of human love.
From the details of garden design and innovation to the politics of a growing revolution which was to kill a king and turn a world upside down, Philippa Gregory once again makes history come alive through the people whose passions shaped that world.
