      Description:
This paper presents a study on the performance of activated carbon fiber (ACF) used as extraction fiber for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) and its application for analysis of chlorinated hydrocarbons in water. By means of evaluating scanning electron microscope (SEM) images, specific surface area, pore volume, pore distribution, and properties of adsorption and desorption, the optimal active concentration of phosphoric acid has been determined. Coupled with gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), ACF-SPME is suitable for determination chlorinated hydrocarbons in water with headspace. Experimental parameters such as adsorption and desorption conditions were studied. The optimized method has an acceptable linearity, good precision, with R.S.D. values <10% for each compound. Compared with commercial fibers, ACF has many advantages such as better resistance to organic solvents, better endurance to high temperature and longer lifetime.

        Description:
The usefulness of the strategically designed sample composition (SSC) methodology for the screening of four anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen, naproxen, tolfenamic acid and diclofenac) in water samples is demonstrated. Assuming that in screening campaigns only a limited number of the samples are contaminated with the analytes, the proposed approach allows the reliable identification of the contaminated specimens and the approximate estimation of their concentrations, with a 50% reduction in the total number of processed samples. To achieve this, a limited number of composite samples are built from the individual specimens. Automatic preparation of composite samples avoids human mistakes during this time-consuming and tedious operation, increasing the reliability of the predictions. In this work, a low-cost automatic device able to mix the individual specimens in the proportions indicated in the composition matrix is used. Moreover, the efficiency of evolutionary algorithms to predict the concentrations of the anti-inflammatory drugs in ultrapure and river water samples, artificially polluted in the laboratory and their robustness against large errors during the analysis of the composite samples, are evaluated.

          Description:
MCM-41-typed mesoporous hybrid was investigated as the fiber coating of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) compared with bonded porous silica for the extraction of aromatic compounds in combination with HPLC. It was found that the mesoporous fiber coatings have higher sensitivity and better selectivity of extraction than bonded silica phase (BSP) coating because their larger surface area and smaller mesopores. Especially the extraction efficiency of modified mesoporous fiber coating was about 3-5 times higher than that of BSP. Moreover the values of distribution ratio for toluene and biphenyl is larger than those for p-xylene and anthracene. Desorption can be performed in mobile phase within 5min. Vigorous stirring and higher temperature can improve the sensitivity of SPME with mesoporous coatings because mass transfer from bulk solution to the mesopores is diffusion controlled in extraction process. The mesoporous fiber coatings lose their extraction selectivity and show rapidly decreasing extraction efficiency by increasing content of methanol in water matrix. Different from general polymeric coatings of SPME. However, the mesoporous coatings show negative effect of ionic strength on extraction. Chemical modification also enhances the hydrothermal stability of mesoporous silica. Custom made SPME fiber with mesoporous hybrid coating still gives good reproducibility after 200 runs. The recovery is 99.86-100.32% and the relative standard deviation is 0.11-1.51% for the determination of studied compounds in spiked water. The limit of detection was in the range 2.00x10^-^8 to 6.91x10^-^9molL^-^1

            Description:
Solid phase microextraction (SPME) fibres coated with Carbowax/divinylbenzene and semi-permeable membrane devices (SPMDs) of standard configuration were used to obtain time-weighted average (TWA) field air concentrations of selected chlorinated semi-volatile compounds on a landfill, where large amounts of lindane by-products were deposited, together with other hazardous chemical residues in the past. Additionally, spot sampling with SPME fibres was performed to identify the emission hotspot and sampling rates were determined/predicted for the substances of interest. Both samplers yield comparable TWA air concentrations of lindane and its isomers and of DDT with its metabolites and gain in certainty about the landfill as remaining source of air pollution with these compounds in the region. Both SPME fibres and SPMDs (respective their modifications) can be recommended as sampling tools in process studies and larger air monitoring programmes. However, further calibration studies and field tests are necessary to obtain reliable sampling rates for a wider range of semi-volatile compounds.

              Description:
A novel poly(dimethylsiloxane)/@b-cyclodextrin (PDMS/@b-CD) coating was prepared for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) in the form of membrane instead of fiber. The surface of the membrane was uniform and has not gel cracking after dipped into methanol, acetonitrile and acetone. Non-polar polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polar phenolic compounds were used to evaluate the character of the PDMS/@b-CD solid-phase microextraction membrane by direct extraction and solvent desorption, followed by GC-MS analysis. Parameters that affect the membrane extraction process were investigated, which included the matrix of sample, extraction time, desorption solvent and time. For PAHs, the linearity was from 0.10 to 1000@mg1^-^1. The limit of detection (LOD) was in the range of 0.01-0.2@mg1^-^1. The repeatability was in the range of 5.4-9.3%. For phenolic compounds, the linearity was from 0.10 to 5000@mg1^-^1 and LOD varied from 0.02 to 1.5@mg1^-^1. Compared with the SPME fiber, the SPME membrane has a large extraction capacity, low cost of preparation. The sensitivity can be further increased by developing large-volume-injection or thermal desorption technique.

                  Book Description

Structural health monitoring (SHM) describes the use of one or more in situ sensing systems placed in or around a structure, with the aim of providing real-time evaluation of its performance and ultimately preventing structural failure. Although most commonly used in civil engineering, such as in roads, bridges, and dams, SHM is finding applications in other engineering environments, including aerospace. Structural Sensing, Health Monitoring and Performance Evaluation presents the first comprehensive coverage of SHM. The book begins with a review of the various types of sensors currently used in SHM, including point sensors (traditional strain gauges and more recently developed optical fiber sensors) and non-contact systems (visual/photographic inspection, remote sensing, and NDE techniques). The author then describes the processing and interpretation of data from a number of sensors working in parallel. After considering issues related to the structures themselves, the book surveys the design of a tailor-made SHM system and the final chapter examines some specific case studies.

America's fighting men have turned to Once an Eagle as a sourcebook for the military's core values since its publication at the height of the Vietnam War. The novel, following the careers of virtuous Sam Damon and opportunistic Courtney Massengale, is required reading for all members of the United States Marine Corps and frequently taught in leadership courses at West Point.

                  Book Description

Once An Eagle is the story of one special man, a soldier named Sam Damon, and his adversary over a lifetime, fellow officer Courtney Massengale. Damon is a professional who puts duty, honor, and the men he commands above self interest. Massengale, however, brilliantly advances by making the right connections behind the lines and in Washington's corridors of power.

Beginning in the French countryside during the Great War, the conflict between these adversaries solidifies in the isolated garrison life marking peacetime, intensifies in the deadly Pacific jungles of World War 11, and reaches its treacherous conclusion in the last major battleground of the Cold War -- Vietnam.

A study in character and values, courage, nobility, honesty, and selflessness, here is an unforgettable story about a man who embdies the best in our nation -- and in us all.

5 out of 5 stars A cliche, but this is a must read for those interested in military life........2007-08-03

This novel follows Sam Damon, a decent-to-the-bone Nebraskan, over the course of a U.S. Army career stretching over much of the twentieth century. The major conflicts are between Damon and his wife, Tommy, who is thoroughly sick of the military, and between Damon and a self-promoting officer named Massengale.

There is not a cardboard character anywhere in this well-written work and its chapters are chock-a-block with memorable phrases. A reader's loyalties to the characters will likely change several times before the final page. The author's consideration of duty -- and conflicting duties -- and the costs is unsurpassed.

5 out of 5 stars A military epic for all time.......2007-07-02

I just finished reading this book for the second time and loved it just as much as the first. This is definitely an anti-war book because it takes an honest look at war and its savage effects - and Myrer should know as a Marine who served in WW2 and got wounded in the Pacific.

Myrer does an amazing job of characterizing a military man and his family/friends in both war and peacetime.

Many of the military/political ideas continue to be valid as America finds herself in another ambiguous war.

Though Once an Eagle is a historical novel it packs a realism most histories (or even military novels) don't possess. It should be required reading for anyone in the military whether active or reserve, enlisted or officer.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-10

A book that regards morals and values is a rare commodity these days. It was an excellent and fast paced read. Highly recommended

                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......2006-08-17

On literary merit alone, this book would get about 3 stars. It is a competently written popular novel. Myrer did have an ambitious aim, to lay out the history of the US Army from WWI up to the 60s. His protagonist, Sam Damon, is a young Nebraska man who enlists in the US Army prior to WWI, receives a battlefield commission in France, and then becomes a career officer. Myrer uses Damon's career to show the development of the Army. Myrer does a good job of showing the relative amateurishness of the US Army during WWI, the very constrained interwar period, and the huge expansion of the military just before and during WWII. The battlefield scenes are said by many to be realistic and are the best parts of the book. Damon's character and career are contrasted with those of a unprincipled careerist officer whose actions through Damon's meritorious actions into high relief. This book is certainly not outstanding literature but is generally written competently. The themes are good ones. While the characters are reasonably well developed, the contrast between the hero and the bad guy are is too strong to be creditable. Damon is really too good to be true and his opponent is not only a callous careerist but also a coward, a sadist, and sexually inadequate.
This book has some sociological interest. It is very popular in the military and has been used in courses for officers. The edition I read was published by the Army War College Press. The hero is generally held up as an example for young officers. I suspect this book is going to experience another surge of popularity among the military. One of the hero's last acts is an attempt to forestall greater American involvement in a thinly disguised version of Vietnam, presented clearly as a principled act of leadership in opposition to powerful but uncritical political and military leaders. There appears to be quite a bit of disatisfaction among the officer corps about the complaisance of the military leadership in the runup to the invasion of Iraq. Myrer's Sam Damon is again going to be seen as role model for officers.

                  5 out of 5 stars A tale of a soldier's soldier.......2006-06-06

I could never do justice to the story by trying to describe it in a few words here. Suffice it to say that I read it right after Myrer's death while stationed overseas, and it enthralled me with it's powerful statement about duty and loyalty as opposed to power and its misuse. The book was lent to my buddies and I unfortunately forgot it when I flew back to the world, but have never forgotten its message. I've tried to instill the same values in my son while he is in Army ROTC in college. Even if you've never served; never plan on serving; or cannot serve anylonger, (as in my case), read this book for its story and characters. I will stand this book alongside any other for pure story telling and believability.

Frank Walton was the individual who wrote all of the 'after-mission' (combat) reports, interviewing each pilot after each mission and writing up the details. Frank Walton went much further. He wrote up biographies of each pilot - where they were from, where they went to school, their families, their likes and dislikes. All of the info provides a human side to the men, makes them believeable, and helps you fly with them as they go out on each mission.
The second half of the book contains his 'current-day' stories. He looked up as many of the original members as he could and interviewed them "today" (the early 8o's.) The book includes both WWII and "today" pictures of most all of the pilots. After reading of their WWII exploits, I really enjoyed learning of each of these men 'today,' where they've gone, who they've become, generally very successful business men all. I guess what surprised me was that most of them, after all of their exploits and adventures, 'walked away' from aviation, to be normal everyday business and family men. I guess I would have expected them to mostly go on to careers in aviation. But they are our businessmen, some our business leaders, and mainly, our neighbors. Thank you all for what you did for us.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT history of the Men of the Black Sheep Squadron.......2003-09-01

Extremely well written and concise book that tells of the INDIVIDUALS in the squadron. This book is written to tell of the professionalism and "after the war" historys of the squadron members without the sometimes overpowering myths portrayed by the TV show.

2 out of 5 stars A more honest look than TV, but then, what isn't?.......2001-09-27

As the intelligence office for the Black Sheep Squadron, author Frank Walton had access to their daily combat reports. He himself had written them. From these records and his later interviews with the surviving members of the group, he penned this history. Written primarily to dispel the myth created by the TV production, he most certainly shows the men in a more realistic light. The false presentation of these men by the writers of that series as "brawling bums" and "fugitives from courts-martial" does not stand in the light he casts upon them, their character and their record. In the second half of the book, Walton introduces each man as he was when the book was written in 1986. By and large, most became very successful.

But the drama of their fighting over the Solomons falls flat in the telling. Their aerial exploits read with all the excitement and anticipation of the menu at the corner hamburger joint. The men of the Black Sheep fought together for only 12 weeks and amassed the best kill record in the South Pacific: 94 kills in only 84 days. Pappy Boyington accounted for 26 (or 28, if he is to be believed). Unfortunately, these moments of high achievement are told in the driest of voices.

Perhaps the biggest fault in the book is Walton's almost non-telling of Boyington's troubled life. He originally left the Marine Aviators days before they would have put him out for unbecoming conduct and he left the Flying Tigers for much the same reason. This highly skilled combat pilot and gifted leader of men was deeply troubled and it manifested itself in his drinking and unpredictable fighting. Playing it down adds nothing to Walton's attempt to "set the record straight" for the rest of the squadron.

Given the resources at his command, his personal friendship with all 51 original members of the group and his intimate friendship with Boyington, one would have expected a better result. Walton's stated purpose was to clear the record for the men, to present them as the men of ability, honor and skill that they were. In this regard, he does succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book.......2000-04-14

I was a bit leary of this book when I started it. The claim of the author to be one of the Black Sheep, even though he was not one of the pilots seemed a bit odd. Well, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It is a very easy read and contains a good deal about the day to day life of a pilot in the South Pacific.

It also gives a terrific look into the people behind the personas of the Black Sheep, especially Pappy Boyington. The writer does a good job of relating the respect that his men had for him as well as about the team of pilots the Black Sheep were.

A very good read for a very good price.

5 out of 5 stars Different Point Of View.......1999-03-28

The Black Sheep legend, as retold through the eyes of the survivors. The first half of the book is the squadron history of VMF 214, from the time of its resurrection under the command of Major Gregory Boyington, until the squadron was disbanded, and the squadron number reassigned to another outfit, after Boyington went missing in action (and was presumed dead), near the end of their second tour under his command. The last half of the book is a personal history from each of the survivors, as to what the experience was like, how it has affected their lives, what they did in post Black Sheep life. An assortment of interesting characters, molded under the guidance of Boyington, in to "the terrors of the South Pacific". Very interesting, although it does vary some from the version told by Boyington himself in his autobiography "Baa Baa Black Sheep". As is only human, each man sees 'the truth' from his own perspective, so it is interesting to see the whole thing through the eyes of someone other than Boyington himself. This book shows that the Black Sheep were more than Boyington. They were a well rounded team, molded and hardened under the realities of aerial combat. It comes across quite clearly however, that regardless of what they thought of Boyington as a person (they didn't all look up to him like a bunch of starry eyed boys, as depicted in the TV show...some in fact were older than Boyington), they definitely respected him as "a warrior, a fighter & a leader", and one pilot recalls thinking of Boyington as "Jesus Christ himself", upon first being introduced. Originally published in 1986 (before Boyington's death), it is surprisingly frank in it's assessment, some might even say it's condemnation, of the leader of the Black Sheep, not so much in his days as the commanding officer of the 214, but in his postwar life. Many of them felt betrayed by Boyington, after his role as 'technical advisor' on the TV series. Overall it makes for an interesting read. Well worth it. Dave White

                        Book Description

                        Mom, Dad, I'm getting married.

What do you do when your daughter tells you the big news? If you're Camille Delonga, you fight the urge to go lie down for a year or so ... and then you do what any self-respecting mother of the bride would -- you march right out and buy a sky-high stack of bridal magazines.

Once upon a Wedding In award-winning author Kathleen Eagle's astonishing and warm new novel, we see just what happens to Camille, her family, and her friends when her beautiful and young daughter, Jordan, speaks those unforgettable words. After all, weddings are a time of unbelievable joy, a few tender tears -- and sometimes one huge headache.

So Camille ignores the thought that her baby is simply too young to take such a big step and throws herself into action. There are flower arrangements to be chosen, favors to be lovingly created by her own two hands ... and lives to be put in order. And one of those disorganized lives belongs to her irrepressible, irresponsible, and somehow still irresistibleex-husband.

When they were younger -- as young as Jordan is now -- Camille loved Creed Burke with all her heart and soul. This passionate Lakota swept her off her feet and right to the justice of the peace. Their wedding had been hurried, private ... nothing like the extravaganza their daughter is now planning.

Creed is a musician who never seems to stay in one place long enough. Yet his wanderlust has never quite quenched his and Camille's passion for each other or his love for their daughter. But it did unravel their marriage.

Now after years of cordial and casual, Camille finds that Creed is invading every aspect of her life. When she comes down for breakfast, he's sitting at the table helping himself to coffee. And when she goes out on the town with her girlfriends, he's sure to show up and ask her for a long, slow dance. Slowly but surely, Creed is weaving himself back into the fabric of her life. And their daughter's upcoming wedding brings back so many tender, tempting, and confusing memories of their own fiery union.

Her two best girlfriends aren't much help. "Maybe it'll all work out," says gentle Ellie, a not-so-closet romantic who is clearly hoping for a reconciliation. "Don't trust him!" warns Bridget. But can you really trust someone whose husband has just stormed out of the house? As for Camille's own mother, Rosie, who is facing a serious illness and still has an expectant gleam in her eye and a soft spot in her heart for her ex-son-in-law, she declares Life's too short to pass up another shot at happiness.

So when the big day arrives Camille realizes there is only one answer: follow her heart. But where will it take her?

Kathleen Eagle has written an extraordinary story, filled with the complexity of female friendships, the tempestousness of the mother-daughter relationship, and the power of everlasting love. Anyone who has ever been a mother, daughter, friend, or lover will never forget Once upon a Wedding.

                        1 out of 5 stars I couldn't make it past page 60..........2002-09-25

I was very disappointed with this book. I bought Once upon a Wedding because I am a huge fan of Kathleen Eagle. I should have known something was up when I saw the pink and pastel colored cover; her books, in the past, have never been pink and pastel; they are rich and earthy.

The story was forgettable with forgettable characters. Camille and her friends are in their late forties, but act and speak like they are in their eighties. Frump this; frump that.

Camille, who is openly concerned and whiny about her daughter dropping out of college, doesn't bat an eyelash when the daughter announces she is going to marry a childhood crush she met the day before at a wedding. Huh? If you are going to whine about something, this would be a good thing to crank about.

I don't know what happens in the end. Maybe she gets upset. I don't know...I couldn't make it past page 60.

If you like gather-around-the-girlfriends chick books flavored with a beige plot, this book is for you. If not, save your money and buy one of her other books.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I'd expected or hoped.......2002-07-25

Kathleen Eagle is one of only two authors whose hardbound books I've consistently bought new ... with everyone else I wait till the paperback, or at least till the hardback prices have dropped.

I value her writing for its deep insights into the human heart, emotional honesty and intensity, social consciousness, admirable and irresistible heroes, and the fact that most of her heroines must be Virgos like me. ;-)

So, it is with a sigh that I see that the trend I detected in The Last Good Man - away from romance and toward the kind of women's issues novels that Barbara Delinsky and Patricia Gaffney and many others also have embraced - is continuing. I sigh, because I find women's issues novels really, really boring ... but that's my bias, and obviously one many women don't share, or good novelists wouldn't find their editors encouraging them to write that kind of thing.

Once Upon A Wedding is about three generations of women and women friends, and only peripherally about a mature (nearly 50) woman discovering that she still loves her gifted, charming but unambitious ex-husband. I was reminded now and again of LaVyrle Spencer's Bygones in terms of situation, but not in impact, because I also wondered if Ms. Eagle was as bored by the constraints of this style as I am ... I experienced no deep involvement, no pangs, no real concerns about the people involved, no real liking, actually, for anyone in the book but Rosemary, with her cancer treatments and eBay addiction.

After Night Remembers and Sunrise Song, This Time Forever and Reason to Believe it's deeply disappointing to find Ms. Eagle's novels getting shorter and more superficial, apparently turning away from the things that draw me to read and re-read all of her earlier books, not just the mass market ones I mentioned above.

3 out of 5 stars eloping is simpler!.......2002-07-25

This is my first foray into Kathleen Eagle's world! My rough-hewn self wanted to categorize ONCE UPON A WEDDING as a fantasy...except, this author does have a way with words, & women will drool over them.

A womanly read, about articulate women well versed in relationships; unafraid to murmur awful things to each other, & make up afterwards - it is rich with textures, scents, family scenes, rueful memories & second chances at happiness, at getting it right. Will they take the plunge?

5 out of 5 stars Universal Truths with Heart.......2002-07-18

ONCE UPON A WEDDING is as beautiful and as masterfully written as the cover art suggests. Buy one for yourself, your mother and your daughter. It is a woman's touchstone, a talisman to carry in your heart as one journeys through the rites of passage as a woman.
Enter into Kathleen Eagle's ONCE UPON A WEDDING and recognize yourself in the mirror of her reflection. Revisit passages claimed as your own or ones that reside in your future. Dig deep into the depths of emotion through thoroughly honest and often sparkling dialogue. Put your arms around generational relationships that are universal.
Kathleen gently lifts layers of love and disappointment to reveal the residing emotions that swirl around her characters. This places them in your heart with ease.

                        5 out of 5 stars It's Different, But I Liked It.......2002-07-18

This is not a Romance Novel, or even a love story. I figured that out pretty early on. But is is all about love. It's a heartwarming multi-generational story about relationships. Complex female friendships, the often turbulent mother-daughter relationships, and the power of enduring love. As soon as I got over my surprise, I settled into it and loved every page. You gotta give Kathleen Eagle credit, she's no formula writer, Bless her.
