      Book Description

Hominid Adaptations and Extinctions focuses on the period of 22 to 2.5 million years ago and synthesizes the information currently avaliable on hominid palaeobiology. From 24 to 8 million years ago a large and anatomically diverse number of ape species populated present-day Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. They occupied a wide range of habitats—evergreen forests, bamboo "jungles," swamps, woodlands, and open savannas. Ultimately, these ape populations gave rise to the earliest humans, some 4.5 million years ago. At about 8 million years ago, however, the ape population of the world collapsed, leaving the four relic populations of the great-ape groups we know today: orangutan, gorilla, chimpanzee, and humans. The hominid fossil record provides an excellent case study in the identification and documentation of evolutionary patterns and processes.

The book examines the record of the Neogene (Miocene and Pliocene) fossil apes: their adaptive trends, morphologies, and relationships to the environment; their evolution; and in many cases their extinctions. In so doing, it provides original insights into the evolution of our most distant and our most immediate fossil ancestors. It will be of interest to scholars and students in the fields of archaeology, anthropology, biology, and palaeontology, and to all those interested in human and primate evolution and evolutionary studies in general.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent! Remarkable.......2007-03-04

Just reading the Preface to this book, I fell in love with the author. I completely agree that sometimes the most rigorous and careful treatment of a subject actually makes it possible to study the material faster!! What always frustrated me and slowed me down in reading other books was the sloppiness and hand waving. It's amazing that many Ph.Ds and even authors of famous books like Uyemura's "Fundamentals of MOS ICs" don't understand the simple body effect, and talk about complete nonsense showing a 2 terminal capacitor with Vb applied to the bulk, and saying that the Vt will now change by the sqrt(Vb) body effect. They don't understand that the body effect is a 3 terminal effect and in 2 terminals if you apply Vb to bulk then your Vt will have to increase by Vb--NOT sqrt(Vb)!!! This book is a delight. Just the material on contact potentials was worth the money.

This is a repeat of a review I did previously.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent book.......2003-01-07

Very good book, very neat and clean description, easy to understand, very informative and technical yet easy to understand.

      5 out of 5 stars Just a masterpiece...............2001-10-05

I am a graduate student with main area of interest in Mixed mode design, testing and device modelling. This book was suggested to me by my proffessor. It is the book for MOSFET.I have read many books on this topic like Tyagi,Foty, massobrio etc but this books stands apart. It is a very well written book. Its progress is very logical going from two terminal device to four terminal device with very good explanation of the physics.More importantly the emphasis on the approximations made makes things clearer.....

For a person working with Mosfets it is a must......

5 out of 5 stars Excellent addition to your library.......1999-11-25

I don't usually write reviews unless the book is either very poor or very good. This is one of the best books on my shelf. If you want to know the MOS transistor this is the book. Well researched, excellent explanations, excellent appendices. Other authors of technical books should use this as an example of how to write a good technical book.

        Book Description

The motion of electrons in superconductors seems to defy our imagination based on daily experience with Newtonian mechanics. This book shows that the classical concepts, such as the balance of forces acting on electrons, are useful for understanding superconductivity. The electrostatic field plays a natural part in this balance as it mediates forces between electrons at long distances. Due to its classical interpretation, the theory presented in this book is suitable for introductory courses.

            Book Description

Developed for a one-semester course at the junior, senior, or graduate level, MOSFET Theory and Design presents a clear, in-depth treatment of physical analysis and design principles for the MOSFET. By focusing solely on the MOSFET, this slim volume recognizes the dominance of this device in today's microelectronics technology while also providing students with an efficient text free of extra subject matter. Carefully building from simple examples to more complex, real-life cases, the text begins with elementary theory for the MOS capacitor, adding and explaining the complicating factors step by step. It treats the interplay of MOS capacitor and PN junction in the MOSFET both physically and analytically, using some original tools. The book goes on to cover advanced models of the MOSFET, including SPICE treatments of small-signal and large-signal problems using Level 1, 2, and 3 first-generation models, and ending with a brief discussion of second- and third-generation models. MOSFET Theory and Design offers a "hands on" approach to learning, employing analytic, computer, and design problems. It incorporates additional pedagogical aids such as a book summary, review questions that emphasize essential points, in-text exercises with accompanying solutions, and a comprehensive bibliography.

                Book Description

Polarization Effects in Semiconductors: From Ab Initio Theory to Device Applications presents the latest understanding of the solid state physics, electronic implications and practical applications of the unique spontaneous or pyro-electric polarization charge of wurtzite compound semiconductors, and associated piezo-electric effects in strained thin film heterostructures. These heterostructures are used in wide band gap semiconductor based sensors, in addition to various electronic and opto-electronic semiconductor devices.

The book covers the ab initio theory of polarization in cubic and hexagonal semiconductors, growth of thin film GaN, GaN/AlGaN GaAlN/ AlGaInN, and other nitrides, and SiC heterostructures. It discusses the effects of spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization on band diagrams and electronic properties of abrupt and compositionally graded heterostructures, electronic characterization of polarization-induced charge distributions by scanning-probe spectroscopies, and gauge factors and strain effects. In addition, polarization in extended defects, piezo-electric strain/charge engineering, and application to device design and processing are covered. The effects of polarization on the fundamental electron transport properties, and on the basic optical transitions are described. The crucial role of polarization in devices such as high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is covered.

The chapters are authored by professors and researchers in the fields of physics, applied physics and electrical engineering, who worked for 5 years under the "Polarization Effects in Semiconductors" DOD funded Multi Disciplinary University Research Initiative. This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers working in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor physics and their device applications. It will also be useful for practicing engineers in the field of wide-bandgap semiconductor device research and development.

                    Book Description

Super-real fields are a class of large totally ordered fields. These fields are larger than the real line. They arise from quotients of the algebra of continuous functions on a compact space by a prime ideal, and generalize the well-known class of ultrapowers, and indeed the continuous ultrapowers. These fields are of interest in their own right and have many surprising applications, both in analysis and logic. The authors introduce some exciting new fields, including a natural generalization of the real line R, and resolve a number of open problems. The book is intended to be accessible to analysts and logicians. After an exposition of the general theory of ordered fields and a careful proof of some classic theorems, including Kaplansky's embedding theorems , the authors establish important new results in Banach algebra theory, non-standard analysis, an model theory.

this book is a great game of chess...with pieces moving across the board in a strategy that does not become clear until the end of the book. i liked it. it was well written and entertaining

4 out of 5 stars Racing towards the end.......2007-06-03

Although I found to be the ending a bit rushed, Ms. Briggs' book was thoroughly enjoyable. As a "stand alone" book, this is a rare find in a world filled with sequel after sequel. It was an ultimately satisfying vacation read, entertaining and, at some points, thought-provoking.

                        5 out of 5 stars A fast-paced fantasy with a touch of romance.......2006-12-17

Those who have come to Patricia Briggs having read "Moon Called" will find that this book is very different in style from that werewolf/vampire story. "Steal The Dragon" is a fantasy like "Dragon Bones" and "Dragon Blood" as well as her "Raven's" duology. Despite the use of the word "Dragon" in the title of this book it isn't related to the other two dragon books - the only occurrence of "Steal the Dragon" in this book is as a game rather like Chess.

Rialla is an ex-slave working as a horse trainer in Sianim. She comes to the attention of the Spymaster as she is an empathy as well as an ex-slave. Machinations are afoot in a neighbour land, the place where Rialla was formerly a slave, and the Spymaster wishes her to travel, along with Laeth, a mercenary, to that land to see if they can prevent the assassination of Laeth's brother who is working for peace and the end of slavery in his land.

Of course things don't go as planned and Laeth ends up arrested for the murder of his brother. Rialla is severely injured but is nursed back to health by Tris, the local healer. She soon works out that there's more to Tris than meets the eye as his healing abilities seem almost magical - in a world where magic is feared. Tris and Rialla plot to rescue Laeth from his death sentence for killing his brother but this opens a whole new can of worms.

There are many interesting aspects to this book. Rialla's former life as a slave makes very good background, the way in which slaves have to damp down their emotions, the way in which they become dehumanised after a long period in slavery and the dangers in which Rialla places herself in returning voluntarily to slavery as a disguise. The book has a lot of magic in it which sometimes I felt was a little annoying - if there's a problem then someone has the magical ability to deal with it - but the story is very interesting and it's not always clear what's going to happen. The baddies and goodies also have more depth to them than one might expect.

As in "Dragon Blood", Patricia Briggs isn't afraid of giving her characters an awful time and Rialla has to cope with a lot that heroines normally manage to escape by the skin of their teeth. Perhaps that's part of the appeal of this heroine - she is a strong lady who is able to make rational judgements about very difficult issues. Her slow-burn romance with Tris is nicely written.

Overall I enjoyed this book more than "Dragon Bones" and "Dragon Blood" as the story was easier to follow (less politics and less places to try to keep track of). It was an easy read and being a single volume pretty much tied up all the loose ends, bar a few. An enjoyable book for a quiet day.

                        5 out of 5 stars Delightful Read.......2006-11-03

A very well written book - so good - I'm in the process of tracking down her other books to read! Steal the Dragon is a keeper for me. The characters are quite believable, and the fantasy and magic are just 'part' of the 'scenery' if you will. Very well done. Highly recommend this one.

4 out of 5 stars Love Patricia Briggs.......2006-10-31

I really love Patricia Briggs, her books are very easy to read and enjoyable. I always carry one a long with me in the car in case I have to wait for my daughter after school, makes for light and fun reading without too much thought involved. Her characters are vivid and seem to come to life on the pages, and although a quick read they offer deep plot lines and I love intrique. I would reccomend any Patricia Briggs book.
