ASIN: 0471332305 |
Book Description
Extensively updated and revised, this outstanding reference remains the definitive scientific resource for both academic and professional environments
Van Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia has long enjoyed a reputation as one of the most important comprehensive general scientific references available. Substantially revised to cover the many developments since the Eight Edition in 1994, this Ninth Edition ranges across all scientific disciplines as well as many areas of engineering and technology.
Topics covered include animal science, anatomy, astronomy, atmospheric science, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, earth science, energy sources, information science, life science, materials, mathematics, mechanical engineering, medicine, mining, physics, physiology, planetary science, plant science, power technology, space science, structural engineering, and a host of other subjects.
Existing material has been extensively revised for this new edition, and numerous new articles bring the Encyclopedia up-to-date on the latest developments and state-of-the-art knowledge in every discipline. An expanded subject index makes information easier to find. An extensive revision program makes this series an important addition to personal as well as institutional libraries in both academic and industrial settings.
Customer Reviews:
Too many errors.......2007-09-26
When I was a kid I got the 4th edition as a birthday present. In the ten years thereafter I don't remember running into many errors.
I ordered the 9th edition for the next generation last spring, and have read most of A-F myself. There are so many errors (at least one per page) in this edition that I wouldn't recommend anyone using this encyclopedia for anything serious. I do not count simple spelling/grammar errors, only things that change the fundamental meaning of a definition.
Readers interested in mathematics or physics should not rely on any mathematical expression. Simple operators like plus/minus can be mixed up, as well as symbols for variables. Often variables are not properly defined, or in some cases incorrectly defined. Readers interested in chemistry should ignore most 2D organic structures because valance and resonance are often ignored.
Every book has it faults, and encyclopedias with many authors are especially vulnerable. IMHO Editor Glenn D. Considine has not done enough "quality control" to ensure that Van Nostrand's Nine is better than, e.g., Wikipedia.
If there were only a few errors per many pages I would have gladly sent my errata to the Editor. One per page leads me to the conclusion: Do not buy this book.
(For Mathematics you're better off with the 31st Edition of the CRC Standard Math Tables, ISBN 1-58488-291-3)
Great reference but poor value.......2002-12-04
There are three classes of science & technology encyclopedias currently available. The best and most comprehensive one, by far, is the 20+ volume 15,600 page McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology-it's in a class by itself but it will cost [quite a bit]. The next class of science & tech encyclopedias are what you might call the mammoth 2-hand desktops. There are only two in this class, Von Nostrand's Scientific Encyclopedia and the McGraw-Hill Concise Encyclopedia of Science & Technology. The next class of science & tech encyclopedias are the smaller 1-hand desktops of which there are many. After looking at them all and buying several, I've come to the conclusion that the two mammoth desktop encyclopedias are the most useful and the best value. The 20+ volume McGraw-Hill would certainly be nice to have, but if you're the average non-scientist college-educated layman it's too expensive (you could buy a top of the line PowerMac G4 computer for that price) for an encyclopedia whose scientific content will be obsolete in a few short years until McGraw-Hill follows Britannica and makes it available on affordable CDs or online. On the other hand, the smaller more affordable desktop 'encyclopedias' are really misnamed dictionaries given their tremendously broad scope and relatively short length, making them virtually useless (except for James Trefil's excellent Encyclopedia of Science and Technology). That leaves the two mammoth desktop encyclopedias in the middle; they're the best values: large enough to be truly useful, yet small enough to be affordable. Comparing these two qualitatively, they're both authoritative, scholarly, and top-notch. I read each of the encyclopedia's articles on data, information, and computer technology (an admittedly small sample of the enormous content of each). I found the Concise McGraw-Hill to be much more useful. The larger Von Nostrand had more information on these subjects, but it was of such a technical nature that only IT specialists with a heavy mathematics background could understand it. That's great for other professors (who probably wouldn't be consulting a desktop encyclopedia for help in their field anyway) but not very helpful to non-specialists. In other words, as a college-educated liberal arts generalist I learned more from the content of the Concise McGraw-Hill. Comparing them quantitatively in terms of their value, the Concise McGraw-Hill is also a much better value. Von Nostrand's 4192 page encyc. [is costly] while the 2318 page Concise McGraw-Hill goes for [cheaper]. For the price of Von Nostrand's you can purchase the Concise McGraw-Hill and Trefil's smaller but excellent work and still have [money] to spare. Until McGraw-Hill and/or Von Nostrand's delivers their content in more economical and accessible forms the printed Concise McGraw-Hill is the best value available (December 2002).
The Best General Reference in Science Sees an Innovative 9th.......2002-07-01
VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA, 9th Edition edited by Glenn D. Considine and Peter H. Kulik (Wiley-Interscience)Chronicals significant scientific advancements with special attention to Life-Biosciences; Chemistry; Earth and Atmospheric Sciences; Energy Sources and Power Technology; Mathematics and Engineering Sciences; Medicine, Anatomy, and Physiology; Physics; Plant Sciences; Space and Planetary Sciences
Continuing a proud tradition of excellence that dates back nearly seven decades to the First Edition, published in 1938, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA now finds itself in the Information Age. Born before the Atomic Age and updated at intervals ever since, the book now finds itself in the Information Age, and much has changed. Indeed, so much has changed for this edition that, in answer to the first question of what is new, we might just as well ask: What isn't new?
With frequent, extensive revisions, this work has kept speed with advances in science throughout the 20th century and now the tradition continues into the 21st century with this landmark Ninth Edition. A concise, extensive, and accessible resource, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA remains a reference work that contains comprehensive coverage of all areas of science including engineering, mathematics, and medicine.
Much of the existing material has been extensively revised, with new or completely rewritten articles in emerging technologies like genetics engineering and cloning, bioprocess engineering, astrobiology and the universe, artificial intelligence, AIDS and STDs, global warming, computer science and the Internet, and flat panel display technology. Each topic is discussed progressively, beginning with a simple definition expressed in plain terms, developing into a more detailed treatment, and augmented by additional reading suggestions containing both updated print and Internet references. Topics covered in VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA include animal science, anatomy, astronomy, atmospheric science, chemistry, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, earth science, energy sources, information science, life science, materials, mechanical engineering, medicine, mining, physics, physiology, planetary science, structural engineering, and a host of other subjects.
The essence of VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA is enduring summary research, and it remains a fine, concise, comprehensive, and accessible general science work. Its intellectual scope ranges from the introductory to the highly technical in a vast and ever‑expanding array of topical coverage in the sciences, engineering, mathematics, medicine, and more. As has long been the case, the editors have designed the book to be approachable by students of many ages. An important feature continued in this work, therefore, is the progressive development of the discussion of each topic, beginning with a simple definition expressed in plain terms, developing into a more detailed treatment, and augmented by often‑extensive Additional Reading suggestions.Contemporary readers can now turn to VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA for information about how their daily lives are increasingly affected by the sophistication of today's science and the complexity of modern technology. They will be reminded that knowledge and discovery exist in a continuum, and that often, but not always, what is new depends entirely on what came before.
It is obvious to the editors we have entered a new Age of Discovery, as witnessed by the scores of new entries on topics that were in their nascent stages in 1994 with the 8th edition. The 9th Edition features entirely new or completely rewritten home articles or whole families of articles on the full array of topical coverage, including but by no means limited to: Genetics, Engineering, Human Genome Project (The), and Cloning; Bioprocess Engineering (Biotechnology); Space Shuttle, Space Stations, Spacecraft Missions, Satellites (Communications and Navigation), Cosmology, X‑ray Astronomy (family of articles), Astrobiology and The Universe; Artificial Intelligence (family of articles); Medicine, Diseases, Vaccines, Vision (family of articles), AIDS, and STDs; Climate, Global Warming, and Acid Rain; Gerontology and Biochemical Theories of Aging; Computer Sciences and The Internet; and Flat Panel Display Technology (family of articles).
Next the suggested readings at the end of articles now contain both updated print and Internet references. One has only to engage a typical search engine, on any server, on a large topic, say Artificial Intelligence, to realize the value of these sources. Instead of beginning with "hits" that number in the thousands, VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA readers will have the luxury of having much of the culling already done for them, as they will be offered good "first places" to go for more information. These thousands of references throughout the Ninth Edition will, one hopes, provide a bridge to further and deeper knowledge on literally scores of topics.
New to this edition, editors have added detailed Time Lines and Glossaries to some of the large home articles (Bioprocess Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Vision and the Eye, Optical Fiber Systems, The Internet and many others) to offer "at a glance" information and historical perspective. Finally, the editors have added brief biographies of scores of scientists whose work is alluded to in the text of the book. A history of their times is not complete without mention of their works. Science is history.
A statistical summary of the Ninth Edition would include (1) more than 8,000 entries; (2) more than 9,000 crossreferences for convenient retrieval of information; (3) an alphabetical index with more than 19,500 lines; and (4) 4,378 diagrams, graphs and photographs, and in excess of 550 tables. The interior references in the book, where one article refers to another article that offers augmented or corollary coverage, and the visual aids, as well as the index, have been entirely overhauled; this will result in much greater ease in "navigating" the book.It is the best place to begin with encompassing the vast innovations of the science at the beginning of the 21st century. VAN NOSTRAND'S SCIENTIFIC ENCYCLOPEDIA is the best reference for initial consultation and orientation. REPRESENTATIVE TOPICAL COVERAGE:

Customer Reviews:
Review.......2001-05-11
This book represents a collection of articles that review approaches and technologies useful in the analysis of global protein expression, or proteomics. An introduction to the relationship between genomics and so-called proteomics is followed by chapters devoted to genetic based methods to study protein expression, reviews of two-dimensional gel electrophroresis, mass spectrometry, image analysis, high throughput / automation and some applications. Despite the title of the book, there is little on protein function, and a major facet of proteomics, that is, quantitation is all but forgotten. Some chapters overly cite the authors own work and ignore others, some errors are also encountered. In Chapter 5 Patterson and co describe post souce decay or PSD as occuring IN the ion source and repeatedly refers to MS measurement of mass not, more correctly, mass-to-charge.

The authors take a critical look at the science of jury consultants in Stack and Sway. Using the techniques of modern social science, psychology, and market research, jury consultants apply sophisticated research methods to figure out the best strategies for picking and swaying a jury. This book examines whether the industry is effective and it reveals the tricks of the trade. --David Marshall Nissman, J.D.
Book Description
A new and largely hidden profession has emerged during the past three decades. Drawing on the techniques of modern social science, psychology, and market research, its practitioners seek to remake the way we pursue justice in the United States. Jury consultants help lawyers to pick - some would say "stack" - juries predisposed to render the "right" verdict. And consultants apply sophisticated research methods to figure out the best strategies for swaying the panel. What are we to make of this new and steadily growing industry? Do the techniques work? Is this, as some critics have argued, a new form of high-tech jury-rigging, not much more acceptable than cruder forms of jury tampering? Or do the methods of jury consultants amount to little more than an extension of what attorneys have always done? This book will reveal the "tricks of the trade" and explore the many ways in which trial consultants have infiltrated the courtroom. The authors' purpose is not to launch an all-out attack on this growing industry, but rather to pull back the curtains, allowing a fair and balanced assessment of a new phenomenon in American justice.
Customer Reviews:
New science not so new.......2005-09-26
This book, although copywrited in 2002, is already outdated. Regrettably, it also spends an inordinate number of pages touting commercial jury consulting firms, rather than providing theory, application or even advice on jury selection.
Entertaining and unbiased account of jury consulting........2005-06-04
This work is a fascinating account discussing the circumstances under which jury consultants are effective. I read it to be rather unbiased. The Kressel's concentrate on the facts of prominent cases as well as the experiences of jury consultants and seasoned trial attorneys. It contains arguments from experts who disagree on the effectiveness of hiring a consultant and the prudence of paying 5 and 6 figure fees for simulated trials, witness coaching and after-trial analysis.
Since the authors do not pander to jury consultants, or to the trial attorneys who use them, I can see why this book is controversial and it may receive bad reviews from attorneys who swear by them.
I am unsure of what the attorney reviewers mean when they say that "Stack and Sway" is written by only social-scientists. Dorit Kressel (co-author) is a practicing trial attorney in NJ.
A well-researched guide to a controversial industry.......2002-12-06
This book wasn't written by a consultant and it isn't a cookbook on how to do jury consulting. But it is a pretty fair guide to what jury consultants and the lawyers who use them are up to. The authors claim to expose some myths about juries, consultants and lawyers. They may not convince everyone -- and they will probably anger some consultants -- but they have done their homework. The book is loaded with evidence, some of it from social scientists, some of it based on interviews with lawyers and consultants. After reading the book, however, I'm still sure whether trial consultants are a threat to our justice system or not. But I am glad I read it.
These folks are just WRONG.......2002-11-29
Seems to be a series of anecdotes by a husband and wife team who never actually tried a jury case in their lives. "Social Scientists" and non-practitioners cannot really know the effects of jury consulting or voir dire, since social science studies are third-hand "pseudo-science guesses" at what really goes on, and whether justice is truly done. A nice book for their resume, but that's about it.
Social Scientists Cannot Know What Trial Lawyers/Judges Do.......2002-11-29
Although well crafted, these non-practitioner social scientists have missed the boat when they accuse jury consulting of taking part in "jury rigging". Having sat as a felony Judge and jury trial lawyer for 25 years, I have personally seen how detecting unconscious or concealed biases SERVE justice, not hurt it.
"A" for effort, "D" for conclusion.

Bringing Bats into Focus! Excellent Overview.......2007-01-17
This is a fine starter book for kids interested in different animals...Bats: Mammals that Fly is our second encounter with the Animals in Order series. What I like a great deal about this is that it takes time at the beginning of the book to look at (briefly) what makes an animal a bat, not a bird or a mouse (which they sometimes look like), getting into what traits exactly make a bat. The book then goes into the "order" of living things which details the kingdom, phylum and class , order, family and species (with a handy visual chart for reference, great for younger kids, so they can SEE how it works rather than just read it or have it read to them). This is one of the better features of this series. Next in goes specifically into where bats fit into animal kingdom, breaking it down (in words and pictures again) to kingdom (animal), phylum (chordate), class (mammal) and order (bat).
The book also talks a bit about where bats of all types and sizes fit into food chain in North America, South America, Africa and Asia. Bats: Mammals that Fly goes from there into an overview of fourteen species complete with full page, color photographs for each one (our boy loved this best), which were quiet nice. This section includes Family, Common Example, Genus and Species and Size for each bat discussed...from the tiny (1.25 inch to 3 inch) Brown Bats of North America to the larger Fruit Bats of Africa (1.5-12 inches). Each animal is given one full page for written description and one full page color photo...excellent for bringing the animal to life for the readers!
Overall, a fantastic way to introduce various types of bats to your curious young reader! What you get in Bats: Mammals that Fly is an excellent overview of all types of bats, with information that takes the scare out of these nocturnal hunters...our kids even came to appreciate the South American vampire bat and enjoyed the section near the end about how European explorers came home with stories of the bats and they were later incorporated into folklore and legend. Now when we see bats at night, the kids speculate as to which bugs are their favorite and what fruits their cousins all over the globe might enjoy! I was impressed with and pleased to find that at the end of the book the author/publisher also included a short recommended reading list and some really great web pages to do more research on...the kids in particular LOVED this!
Five stars all the way, we had a great time reading this and I hope read more of these very soon! I give it a solid two thumbs up, a great starter resource for young readers!

Fascinating.......2000-12-24
This intelligent and exceedingly well researched book brings the gypsy world-warts and all-through your front door. Filled with surprises-American gypsies have a national palm reading network with tightly defined terrioties-and affectionate portraits of these elusive people. "Familiar Strangers" is required reading for any American who is interested in learning about his gypsy neighbors.
charitable but not very reliable.......2000-07-03
Sway attempts to be fair to the people known as "gypsies," with the result that she overlooks behavior that may contribute to the problems they face everywhere. In her efforts to make their behavior conform to questionable sociological theories, she fails to view gypsy life objectively and, therefore, helpfully. Information about these fascinating people is always difficult to authenticate. This book is especially questionable.

The funny, touching story of a recluse and his ghost.......2006-12-08
Sway is a twisted update of the old "Little Miss Marker" (or "Punky Brewster") story. Traditionally, an adorable child redeems a grumpy recluse through the gift of love. Here, the "adorable child" role is filled by a slovenly, loud, and violent (not to mention hirsute) ghost. And rather than an appreciation for life, the relationship between Stan (the grump of this story) and the ghost leads to serial murder and animal mutilation.
Surprisingly, the story remains as heartwarming as ever.
Sway is a comedy, which is fortunate. A novel about an unemotional recluse, a petulant ghost, and the murder of the people who come between them, shouldn't take itself too seriously. Mike Preston, a stand-up comedian, succeeds in pulling a lot of laughs out of the escalating disasters that result from the ghost's invasion of Stan's world.
However, Sway is also a love story. Actually, it is two love stories, one platonic and one romantic. First there is the relationship between Stan and the ghost. As improbable as it may sound, the story of how these two lonely souls, who cannot even communicate with each other, learn to value companionship over continued isolation, is genuinely moving. Second, there is the story of Stan's burgeoning affair with the checkout woman at his supermarket. Sway is funny, to be sure. But the novel is most memorable for these relationships, and for Stan's growing realization that he does not want to remain isolated.

I'm hard up for good ghost stories, and you can't beat a good serial killer for curiousity. This ebook filled a dull day for me and I'm hard to please. The ghost is not trite, nor does the author try to make any lofty suggestions about life and death. It becomes a black comedy of disaster for the narrator, who tells his story to some "serial killer" shrinks looking to fit him into thier neat patterns. I say, grab and read it.
