Wonderfully deep and ultimately useful. Geology terms I'd forgotten are explained as well as used in context, diagrams, and maps. As a plus, the information is current and sparks interest and exploration by leaving loose ends for the reader to tie in the form of unanswered questions.

If you are intrigued by idea of melting glass in a torch and creating anything from little forest creatures to crystal goblets, this is the book for you. Homer lays it all out for you and gives you step by step instructions and diagrams to get you started. The projects in the book begin very simple and work there way to complex. You are led by the hand in an art that has been traditionally held secret.

I personally know many artists across the country that have taught themselves to "sculpt" glass in the torch with the aid of this book. It is a very thorough step-by-step approach to learning lampworking of glass.

Title is a bit confusing. Great for those interested in flameworking. Not what I expected.

This is a simple book which introduces the reader to the art form. It has value as background in the subject and to amateur carvers. It is not a reference for anthropological exploration of North West Coast totem carving by any means. If you are looking for such this isn't the book for you. There is no adherence to form or style anywhere resembling anything close to the heritage of NWC art.

Written for the beginning woodcarver who doesn't care about quality or adhering to the form used by the Northcoast people. Someone who just wants to hack something out. Is not appropriate for an experienced carver or the carver who wants to duplicate the beauty and grace of the totems of Costal People. Pass this bye there are good how to do it books available. This isn't one of them..

Thorough, if dated, introduction to photography in the field.......2000-10-02
I bought this book prior to going on my first professional photographic gig at the site of Isthmia, Greece. The book is extremely helpful for the novice with a great introduction to light and depth of field. Although featuring examples from the author's experience with American excavations, the methodology provided in the book is universal -- props, accessories, and lighting tricks. One of the most useful tools the book provides is a series of crib-sheets that you can cut out and paste on card stock that will fit in your camera bag. These sheets cover everything from reminders for object photography to how to take care of your lenses. My only real gripe with the book is that it is extremely biased and opinionated, which is fine (I guess) if the intended audience was not at the novice level. Comments like "stay away from motorized film advances -- they are loud and are prone to breaking," smack of old-school elitism and are no longer really valid. This book gives some exceptional information on photographing every aspect of an excavation, but like reading stratigraphy, to really glean the best data, you have to be a careful reader with some experience in photography.
