Book Description
Like the preceding volumes, Volume 3 of Annual Surfactants Review focuses on the diversity of surfactants, both in terms of chemical structure and physico-chemical/surface active properties. Although they may be predictable for simple molecules, for most commercial surfactants, this is not easy. It remains important, however, to understand the interactions within a multi-component mixture in order to select the most appropriate product for an application. Chapter One of this volume considers surfactant application in the context of structure-performance relationships. It forms a unique guide to the influence of chemical structure on end-use performance that illustrates how some of the newer classes of surfactants overcome deficiencies of previously used products. Chapter Two explores surfactant-polymer interactions-an area of significant current interest. The remaining chapters illustrate the diversity of surfactant applications and focus on some of the latest developments in application technology. Written by outstanding scientists in the field of surface chemistry, Surface Active Behaviour of Performance Surfactants continues the tradition of Annual Surfactants Review by covering carefully selected topics that offer a snapshot of the many studies undertaken worldwide. It provides a valuable reference for chemists whose work involves the production, formulation, and application of surface active agents.

Book Description
Curvature and Deformation of Nucleic Acids: Recent Advances, New Paradigms presents an up-to-date review on the curvature and deformation of nucleic acids. Chapter 1 sets the various chapters in context, as well as describing several controversial topics. Chapter 2 gives a comprehensive review of the literature on DNA bending and describes the current status of molecular dynamics simulations of DNA and protein-DNA complexes. Chapter 3 describes the structural basis for A-tract DNA helix bending, based on recent NMR structures and other biophysical measurements. Chapter 4 describes the localization of Mg++ ions in the crystal structure of a B-form DNA dodecamer and discusses the relevance of these bound ions to sequence-dependent bending. Chapter 5 discusses the electrostatic energy penalties that result from phosphate crowding in curved DNA oligomers. Chapter 6 presents a quantitative model that predicts the magnitude of the bend caused by asymmetric charge neutralization of DNA phosphate residues. Chapter 7 reviews the structural and dynamic properties of four-way DNA junctions in the presence of metal ions, and it describes the exchange between alternative stacking conformers in solution. Chapter 8 documents the fact that a conserved pseudouridine residue in an RNA duplex containing a precursor messenger branch site makes an important contribution to the structure of the molecule. Chapter 9 describes structural perturbations that are observed in disease-related mutants of human mitochondrial transfer RNAs. Chapter 10 reviews the thermodynamics of the folding and unfolding of DNA oligomers distorted by the binding of small ligands. Chapter 11 describes a method of constructing DNA fragments for cyclization studies that uses single strand gaps as flexible hinges that allow the correct torsional orientation of the helix ends. Chapter 12 reviews a statistical mechanical model that predicts the stability of reconstituted nucleosomes based on sequence-dependent DNA curvature and flexibility.

Best biography on Thomas Henry Huxley to date.......2004-06-05
This splendid, relatively terse, tome on the life and career of Thomas Henry Huxley, the celebrated 19th Century English biologist, is a masterpiece of splendid scholarship and prose by its author, Sherrie L. Lyons. Lyons makes a persuasive case showing how Huxley's strict adherence to the scientific method led eventually to the acrimonious feud between him and Richard Owen, the eminent anatomist of the mid 19th Century. Lyons shows how Huxley gradually shifted his allegience from the German structuralist view championed by Owen to Charles Darwin's theory of evolution via natural selection, but at the same time recognizing some major pitfalls to Darwin's theory, most notably the significance of hybrid sterility. Huxley's legitimate criticisms of natural selection led Darwin to embark upon an ambitious research program - with the assistance of other leading British scientists - to study hybrid sterility, among others, resulting in a further strengthening - not weakening - of Darwin's original concept of natural selection. Lyons notes how the discoveries of important fossils in the 1860's with ample evidence of gradual transitions between species eventually led to Huxley's shift from a strict saltationalist view of the origin of species that was greatly at odds with natural selection to fully embracing Darwin's concept of natural selection as a gradual evolutionary process. She also points out that Huxley, long before Darwin himself, was willing to seize the initiative and note the strong kinship of the great apes with Man, making this point in public lectures, popular articles and finally, a book published in 1864, seven years prior to Darwin's "The Descent of Man". Last, but not least, Lyons notes how Huxley's original concerns regarding natural selection are still being investigated by evolutionary biologists - most notably paleontologists and developmental biologists - today.
Biography of an early Darwin critic..........2001-01-12
This fascinating and important biography of T.H.Huxley shows almost another Huxley from the one we associate with the Darwinian tradition. Huxley is an important figure, for in many ways he saw more clearly than Darwin, and current biology is catching up with him. The author begins by noting that 'while Huxley enthusiastically accepted the idea of descent with modification, he was critical of the two central components of Darwin's theory: gradualism and natural selection'. As the author notes, Huxley warned Darwin on the eve of publication that he had burdened his theory unnecessarily with the dictum, natura non facit saltum. This eye opening account reveals a Huxley who could step from a time machine into the contemporary debates on evolution, as the issues that were clearly in the background to Darwin's public triumph resurface with renewed force. Indeed, we discover that Huxley was close also to the developmental tradition with his interest in morphology and considerations of type.
It is a strange testimony to the telescoped pictures we have as non-specialists dependent on hurried summaries that this alternate side of Huxley should have remained unclear throughout the whole Darwin debate. And it is a reminder that the debate is one of selective emphasis of issues that were present from the beginning and never enter the mythical accounts of the Wilberforce debate. This biography, from Prometheus books no less, seems a bellwether for a paradigm in transition. Must reading.
Cf. also Adrian Desmond's Huxley, for a fuller picture of the nineteenth century background of culture and ideology.
A superbly researched and engagingly written biography........2000-03-04
Sherrie L. Lyons' Thomas Henry Huxley provides an excellent history of the English biologist who was the foremost defender of Darwin's theory of evolution. His scientific background and contributions are revealed in an excellent survey.

Book Description
This book examines the persona of the "man of science" in the Victorian period as it was shaped by Thomas Huxley, the leading British naturalist and notorious popularizer of Darwinian theory. It demonstrates how the scientific practitioner was regarded as a moral and religious figure; simultaneously considered to be the epitome of the secular, professional scientist. Breaking with traditional biographies, this fascinating portrait treats Huxley as the consummate British "man of science" and reflects on the historical significance of scientific authority.

Academic.......2006-03-10
I will come back and give a more thorough review the next time I visit the site, but in the absence of any other commments I will quickly throw down some of my observations.
First: This book is less of a pleasure read as it is an academic History of Science read. It feels as though this is White's dissertation papers (or perhaps his dissertation). To that extent, while it is a very thoughtful piece, it feels as though White is trying to bend history so as to create a problem that academic scrutiny can solve.
Second: There is invaluable interpretation of Thomas Huxley as an idea (if not an ideologue) and as a visionary who intended to
Third: This may sound like a repetition of the first point, but passages of this book feel forced. Believe me, I read this as part of honors coursework and even incorporated it into my final paper and I felt as though I was forcing things when I was referencing it (although the professor apparently did not think that my interpretation was forced and gave me an 'A' on that paper).
That said, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in turning points in the History of Science.
Book Description
Selected as one of the eleven Best Books of 1997 by the Editors of The New York Times Book Review.
Champion of modern education, creator of an intellectually dominated profession, T.H. Huxley epitomized the rise of the middle classes as they clawed power from the Anglican elite. Written with enormous zest and passion, Huxley is about the making of our modern Darwinian world.
Customer Reviews:
Great Bio! We Could Sure Use a Huxley Today in USA!.......2005-09-07
What a fine book and bio! The author stated that he is most interested in placing TH Huxley into the context of his times, late 19th Century England, and the world, and he succeeds completely! From THH's humble origins with descriptions of the slums of 1840's London, through the amazing Rattlesnake voyage to Australia and New Guinea, and onward to the world's #1 Iconoclast (Nietzsche came a little later), this book reads like the best novel, with tons of biology, paleontology, history of science, theological debunking, and English history all included. Not to mention the sometimes difficult financial and family life of the founder of the famous 20th century Huxleys. THH was obvious as close to a universal scientific genius and spokeman as we'll ever have! Very strange how his many claims for science in school were accepted in Britain by the 1890's, but are still controversial in 2000's USA!
One of the best science biographies ever.......2005-06-16
I've read Adrian Desmond's Huxley biography several times since its initial publication a decade ago. When I first read it, I thought it was a tour de force; ten years later, it still holds up.
Desmond is a brilliant biographer: his "Darwin" (co-authored with James Moore) and his studies of Robert Owen have been deeply influential among historians of science. The difference between those books and this one, though, is that Desmond obviously likes Huxley: he admires the young Huxley's drive and ambition; his willingness to take risks; his ferocious, furious determination to succeed in despite lack of connections or inheritance (Victorian Britain wasn't so far from Jane Austen when Huxley was striking out on his own); and his incredible success. As much as any single individual, Huxley deserves credit for creating our modern notion of what science can do, and how scientists should be treated-- by the state, by the general public, by universities. It's the bulldog's world; we just live in it.
The hip-hop criticism is astute. The book is actually filled with references to earlier histories of science: nearly every page has a play on the title of some book or article. Insiders will get them; apparently they're noticeable, but distracting, to others.
Still, the book is a model for how to write biography, and probably the best introduction to Victorian science and culture around today.
Exhaustive and exhausting.......2003-09-24
I've never read a book quite like Desmond's. He is an extremely talented writer and is obviously enthusiastic about Huxley, his "X club" cohorts, and Victorian England in general. Some of his prose is worth savoring, in fact. However, as other reviewers have mentioned, his talent and enthusiasm primarily result in a 650 page-long monograph of purple prose. It is difficult to find a single sentence on some pages that doesn't contain a simile (usually of an overwrought nature) or highly charged authorial proclamation. Although this practice certainly makes the writing lively, it also makes it extremely heavy-going and, at times, quite confusing. It is difficult to read more than a few pages at a time.
As for the book's material, it is never less than fascinating. Desmond is a thorough researcher, and he never fails to explore the major events in Huxley's life in proper detail. He is also enormously well-schooled in the world of Victorian science, university politics, and culture. Although he makes even the slightest struggle in Huxley's life seem like a battle for all time, he also succeeds in making "Hal" a truly sympathetic and utterly unparalleled individual. I had no problem with the straight narrative structure as other reviewers seem to have had, but many, many names popped in and out of the story with little information to refresh my memory and this grew tiresome.
In short, I recommend giving this book a shot. You may tolerate or even enjoy Desmond's prose. There is a lot of wonderful information about a wonderful and remarkable man to be imbibed. However, be warned that it will most likely be a murky, if hot and spicy, pool to wade through.
Theory, ideology and paradigm mechanization.......2003-06-11
This is one of the best bios of Huxley ever written (cf. also the more theoretical work of Shellie Lyons) and seems a natural companion to Moore & Desmond's work, Darwin: The Tormented Evolutionist.
The new style of Darwin studies takes the legacy of such as John Greene and others and zeroes in on the social context of the emergence of the theory as ideologically charged.
In Huxley's case one sees the generational change breaking the Anglican monopoly of the Paley-ites, but in the process creating a new establishment in the conservative revolution of Darwin's theory.
What is remarkable is that Darwin's bulldog had an initial clarity that drove him to defend Darwin on evolution, but demur on natural selection. How ironic. Le plus ca change!
It is hard to impossible to take theories of evolution in complete seriousness as pure science when we see the almost outrageous social darwinist cast to the whole operation. Huxley, to his credit, saw things differently toward the end in his final classic Evolution and Ethics. Would that the generations springing from his first great defense of the theory could come to his final regrets. Nice work.
amazing subject completely ruined.......2001-07-06
Thomas Huxley deserves better than this meandering, plodding tome. What should have been a facinating biography is lost in the obtuse style the author uses. On the plus side--there are some very good passages and pockets of wonderful information, and the bibliography is amazingly complete. On the minus side--the shining bits are so deeply hidden in the depths of the authors quagmire style you may need a machete to find them. I also agree with some earlier posts that a thematic approach would be preferrable to a strictly chronological narrative.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Not bad, but not as good as people say, I think, this tragedy of Mysterio. A loser supervillain builds up an elaborate revenge and other fantasy around Daredevil. This is in large part due to the fact that is dying of cancer. As a consequence, Daredevil has a lot of problems, and loses a long time lover to AIDS, as she was an ex-junkie.
Daredevil's other tragedy.......2007-01-02
Everybody is always ranting about DD and Elektra's star crossed and doomed love. And it's wonderful . They also talk about his Dad's tragedy and his mother's absence. Also great. (You get that I am talking, from a storytelling standpoint? Don't you?)
But Guardian Devil is right there with those, and in my opinion, beats them by a nose.
The best Daredevil story ever. Shows us DD and Co. as human beings full of angst, hopes and contradictions. You feel for DD as he deals with his issues with Karen Page, his upbringing and Bullseye. Cameos by Spiderman, Dr. Strange and the lovely Black Widow help a lot. Who turns up to be the bad guy --his motives & behavior-- are just right for the story. Gorgeous view of a sad place where love and doing the right thing still matter.
(Did I say the Black Widow is gorgeous in this?)
Don't mean to put down Frank Miller's Born Again. Or Loeb & Sale's Yellow. That is simply impossible. But this is great. I always liked DD, but this was the story that put him over the top for me. After reading this, I couldn't stop rooting for Matt Murdoch's life to get better. He now gets to share living quarters with Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker in my Hall of Fame for Most Interesting Super Hero Alter Egos. This is the graphic novel that got him there.
The Book that Made Me a Daredevil Fan.......2006-11-22
I can describe this book in one word: excellence! This book if perfect for introducing you to the spellbinding adventures of Daredevil. This particular story, "Guardian Devil", is wonderful. It flows nicely and has several plot twists that keep you guessing until the end. I was nearly in tears by the last page! So far I've read this story twice. I'm sure those won't be the last times. Overall, a highly recommended read.
The Jersey Devil.......2006-05-07
Sometimes when famous fanboys are fortunate enough to be allowed to helm a comic book the results are quite abominable. Take for example, Glenn Danzig. Once, he got his music career going, he made a laughable foray into comics with his own imprint: Verotik comics. Standing on the shoulders of giants, such as Frank Frazetta, Verotik caters to adolescent Slayer fans with a taste for Hindenburg-sized breasts, blood, and more Hindenburg-sized breasts. All in an attempt to produce "Adult Comics." Fortunately, sometimes a famous fanboy like Kevin Smith comes along and actually writes comics for adults.
Case in point, Daredevil: Guardian Devil. Amidst the billy-clubbing and blind-fighting masterfully drawn by Joe Quesada, Smith presents the story of Matt Murdock, a man struggling with his faith, as his vigilante alter-ego, Daredevil, is charged with protecting a newborn infant who is alleged by the mother to be the Redeemer reborn. To complicate matters futher, another of Murdock's visitors alleges the child is Antichrist. As he attempts to ferret out the child's true identity and exactly what is going on, Murdock is assailed by Job-like tribulations that touch on all that he holds dear.
Smith's story touches on a number of religious themes: "Catholic guilt," original sin, and hubris, but fear not, True Believers, this isn't a religious-tract-in-comic-book-clothing. There's plenty of Marvel mayhem to go around. As a true fan of the medium, Smith makes ample use of his encyclopedic knowledge of the Marvel pantheon. We are treated to appearances by everyone from Bullseye to Dr. Strange. There's even a cameo appearance by Stan Lee.
I never was a huge Daredevil fan growing up. I always considered him, as one character in Guardian Devil refers to him, "a second stringer." But, having been reintroduced to Matt Murdock via Kevin Smith, I'm a huge Daredevil fan now.
Pretty good but..........2004-12-21
...the plot feels a lot like Born Again, by Frank Miller, which I think is the greatest Daredevil story ever written. Both books deal with the near-total destruction of Matt Murdock's life by an unseen force. Matt even comments on the similarity, which does not excuse it.
I enjoyed the ending, and the revelation of who the villain was. It was also good to see Matt finally deal with the loss of his mother. And the art was beautiful (although it didn't feel dark enough to be Daredevil).
I can understand how someone would be curious about this, as a Kevin Smith fan, but both Born Again and (I'm told) his own Green Arrow series are significantly better.

The mediaeval mind of the man returned from the dead knew no half-lights or compromise in the doctrines of sin and hell. According to all the standards ofhis world, he had sold his soul to the Devil and an eternity of hell-fire awaited him.
'She gazed back at him. The minutes were slipping away one after the other. A town clock chimed the hour. How much longer were they going to stay like this? She dared not move lest God knew what should be let loose upon her. She could conceive of Hugh Paston falling dead in the occupant of his body withdrew suddenly. Come what might, the first move must not come from here.
'Then the man, without taking his eyes off hers, slowly stretched out his hand and touched the back of hers with th etips of her fingers, as if feeling her pulse. The finger-tips were icy cold. It was indeed like the touch of the hand of the dead'

Product Description
From the author of the unforgettable Manual for Normal comes a dark comedy of cosmic proportions, divine intervention, redemption and good, old-fashion mischief. Ferdy is a bumbling little devil with a cushy assignment: Stop Monica Lapparo, a menopausal Episcopal bishop, from becoming a saint. Then Monica receives the Stigmata--and national attention. Adelaide Siren is Monica's long-time friend, a playwright so driven to excel that even her blood type is A. Her envy for Monica is driving her to murder... or at least toward her next Tony. Can Ferdy stop Adelaide from doing something stupid? Of course not. It's no wonder that Ferdy's boss wants to eat him.
Customer Reviews:
Outrageously Fresh.......2006-10-30
What a humorous delight this book is, with its irreverant approach to life and religion. The author's approach is new, and her writing sassy. It is fresher than all the vegetables at the grocers!
Ferdy, you little devil.......2006-07-08
Becky has done it again! This master wordsmith can put together a story like no one else. Her intellect is only overshadowed by her imagination. Benidict Benowitz says "She is going to Hell!" I say she is heading for the best sellers list.
