Although I have done SPE for several years, I was surprised that this book can brought me so much more ideas and concepts. This readable book shows not only how but also why to choose an approach/adsorbent. Detailed but concise descriptions of SPE theories on reversed/normal phase and ion exchange are suitable for both novices and aces. Considerations on silica- and polymer-based adsorbent are crucial to real-world situations. Updated information and critical comparisons of existing products will save readers lots of time and cost to choose a right one. The bottom line is that the book enables SPE users to solve problems systematically instead of try-and -error.

Book Description

Here is an innovative theory of the evolution of human behavior. The theory allows that evolution can account for many behaviors, but points out there are still no viable methods of counseling or therapy based on how humans evolved. And while genes do mold behavior, few human genes are different from those of chimps.

The theory also allows that DNA is "selfish", but over the history of life DNA selected in ways that highly conserved genes could express a variety of organisms for little change to themselves. In a similar way, over millions of years neurology evolved towards increasing generalization, where learning neurology could adapt many needs for the same genetic design. These effects, concatenating at an advanced stage of life, restrict the available fitness pathways along which any species can evolve. Human ancestors evolved along a pathway in which fit adaptations were those that maximized the options of behavior, against a cost to evolve. This can account for many complexities of human behavior, such as why humans have morals, or experience religious awe. There is even a theory of psychology, derived from evolution, but viable in its own terms.

This is not just criticism of current evolutionary explanations of human behavior, but a fresh approach to enduring problems, with original mechanisms and insights.

5 out of 5 stars Solid and Insightful.......2002-03-20

Sean Gould has presented a theory of the evolution of human intelligence that deserves serious consideration. For years, experts have attempted to rationalize how and why and generalized intelligence would evolve through natural selection.

Gould's theory of options addresses this problem head on. Current theories try to connect each attribute of intelligence (culture, language, religion, courting habits) to specific environmental factors but that misses the point. Intelligence had to evolve, in its first instance, as a generalized resource. This book offers one of the most original ways to reconcile the many puzzling facts of this topic, that I have seen.

Read the book.

4 out of 5 stars Morality as a solution to navigating life's choices ?.......2002-02-07

Gould's "Theory of Options" is put forward to bridge explanations of human behaviour to those of human evolution. The major claim is that the human species have become motivated to maximise their options along a 'fitness pathway'. Though supportive of Darwinian notions of structural adaptation, Gould extends the evolutionary argument to address the ontological as well as phylogenetic aspects of individual growth and development. We thus read here of the evolutionary significance and import of more culturally determined values such as may be observed in expressions of human love, morality an ethics. Throughout the book's five main chapters, we read that structural complexity and larger brains increase options (no surprises there), but so also have the development of morals and a flexible psychology served to maximise options. Indeed, the purpose of our knowledge acquisition processes is to increase our options.
Much is made of the idea that purposeful human behaviour is born of the motivation to increase one's behavioural options, but I would argue that this is not so much an end in itself. I would rather have seen the argument framed such that increasing one's behavioural options supplies a SOLUTION to the problem of coping with unpredictable, uncertain future circumstances. Gould is quite at liberty to introduce his notion of the "personal geodesic" as pictorial metaphor for distinguishing ontogenetic from phylogenetic developmental/evolutionary processes, but if the take home message is that increasing one's options affords a greater repertoire of behaviours from which to select in the face of novel circumstances (and thus scaffolding increasingly larger, if not more complex, extant adaptive behaviours), this might have been more succinctly stated.
Gould's more notable contribution here, however, is his prompting discussion re the development of human moral reasoning. Although one rarely considers exactly what evolutionary pressure(s) might be brought to forebearance by its development, Gould proposes that morality evolved as a powerful inhibitor in the (modern) less-reflexive human brain "to ensure that the transfer process from reflex to learning works reliably" (p.105). This is not, however, either a novel, or surprising claim per se, given the recent interest and extensive literature on the topic of intelligent adaptive systems. [Unfortunately embedded in neither a form of Waddingtonian epigenetic landscape or even an autopoietic systems context, Gould's reference group cited throughout the text comprises general readership volumes with no other key paper references provided (though a 'further reading' list is appended)].
But where Gould does provoke us, however, is with his claim that "humans enjoy maximum options when all constraints on behaviour are moral ones" (p. 162). The key observation here is that a flexible, though largely inhibitory, moral psychology may be alterable at relatively high speed (in response to short-term behavioural challenges) without compromising gross morphological characteristics, the latter held sway under more coarse phylogenetic (Darwinian) check. For the 'successful' enculturated human animal able to afford the luxury of pondering ethical considerations (ethics in turn existing to resolve a certain type of action "an unconstrained choice" (p.160). Gould's thesis is not derived from empirical study, but remains worthy of wider attention than this cursory summary might suggest. This volume provides a valuable discursive evolutionary explanation for the emergence of moral and ethical reasoning - a topic little, if ever, offered much space in the modern literature concerned with evolutionary psychology and adaptive intelligent systems.

3 out of 5 stars Poorly Articulated, Interesting Theory of Human Evolution.......2001-12-11

Evolution is one of those subjects where we know so little, that proposed theories usually turn out to be way off the mark in some areas. Advances in understanding mutation, genetics, brain development, and mental processes are beginning to give us powerful new clues that can open the doors to understanding some of what we have missed in the past. Mr. Gould has done a fine job of thinking through what this new learning could mean about evolution. I found my understanding of the science involved and its implications greatly enhanced by this book.

At the same time, I would be remiss if I did not point out that The Theory of Options is the worst written popular science book that I have ever read. Mr. Gould needs to meet an editor who understands his material. The writing is redundant, repetitious, and poorly grounded in many cases.

The Beak of the Finch is a book that greatly influenced my own perceptions of evolution. Under conditions which can vastly vary from year to year, species of finches in the Galapagos Islands rapidly evolved in terms of their beaks to fit the new feeding conditions over the space of just a few years. This often occurred by the premature death of most of the population that had the least appropriate beak sizes and types for that environment. The genes of the survivors reinforced these changes in beaks, as disciplined by competition for scarce food supplies that favored those with the most appropriate beaks.

Opening this book, I expected a strong argument based on the variability of living conditions that would favor Homo Sapiens developing flexible brains, learning, and decision processes that would speed and ease adaptation without requiring the death of most individuals. Although there was a bit of this approach as it related to migrating into different climate zones (and a too-often repeated example of humans using animals furs rather than their own fur to keep warm, as needed), too little was made of the idea that handling short-term variability in food and climate is critical to establishing a large population on Earth's land.

Instead, the Theory of Options builds from Mr. Gould's observation of the human psychological preference for having more freedom, in the form of choices (or options). The book also makes the point that a large brain that is mostly not hard-wired in stimulus-response ways (like fight or flight instincts) is only worthwhile if being aware of more options provides survival advantages. Now, if a larger, flexible brain provides the ability to find more and better survival solutions, that can be the basis of a new theory of evolution . . . regardless of whether or not Homo Sapiens always prefer to have more choices (something that can be disproven in many situations -- for example, auto dealers who offer fewer choices like Saturn outsell those who offer more like Chevrolet).

My reaction is that what Mr. Gold has articulated is a Theory of Rapid Flexibility, rather than a Theory of Options.

The most interesting parts of the book for me were the discussions of how phylogenies stabilize and become a platform for further evolution in new areas. I had often marveled that Homo Sapiens and chimpanzees have very small genetic differences (1-2%) yet are so different in their capabilities. The more phylogenies that exist, the less it will take for a new genetic difference to create vast advantages in survival performance assuming that the difference fits the environment.

I have often also wondered why we have such large brains, when we apparently use so little of them. From reading this book, I realized that evolutionary changes that work must bring in large, untapped capacity long before it is needed. For example, lions have the speed to catch many of the antelopes in a herd. Yet, they will usually focus on just catching the slowest antelopes. Under harder conditions, lions can chase faster antelopes and survive. More pressed for survival, humans could begin to use more of their brains. Perhaps in the past, more of brains were used as part of the environmental survival challenges faced then. Sexual selection will probably favor this approach, since the attribute will have obvious survival benefits. Until the 20th century, for example, many people thought that the shape of the head determined a great deal about a person's intelligence and character. Those beliefs could have been leftovers of sexual selection preferences that helped create people with larger brains.

One clever device in the book that I liked was the way that the primary schools of thought in these subjects were encapsulated into a brief quote at the beginning of each chapter and section of a chapter. This was a highly condensed way to express a broad perspective of the thought on these subjects, without wasting much of the reader's time and attention.

Mr. Gould suggests in the book that more editions will be coming. I hope he will do so, think about the observations that people have made, improve the arguments and exposition, and encourage people to reread the book in its newest form.

4 out of 5 stars other reviewers have missed the point.......2001-07-21

To begin: Yes, there are some problems with this book. It would have benefitted from a thorough editing and tighter citations would definitely help readers make their way through some of the issues addressed in the book. Mainstream publishing review processes make sure that footnotes and commas are in the right places. But they also have the tendency to suck the very life out of a work so that every book is an exact replica (a meme, if you will) of the last book, so that you can read 10 different works on "evolutionary psychology" and feel as though you have only read 1/2 a book with 1/3 of an idea. Once I know the title and author of a book, and that it was published by MIT press, then I can guess the exact content without even reading it. So, okay, Gould publishes "outside of the box"; but he thinks outside of the box as well. And the results are well worthwhile. THE THEORY OF OPTIONS presents a unique view of the evolution of behavior which should be seriously considered by scholars in evolutionary science, particularly those in evolutionary computation. For originality, THE THEORY OF OPTIONS earns my highest recommendation --- a certain thumbs up. Chapters two and three are worth the price of admission alone. The reader should, however, be warned that the writing is rough and the ideas in the second half of the book need to be worked out in a little more detail.

1 out of 5 stars I just didn't get it........2001-07-12

Maybe it's just me, but I just didn't get this book. Sean Gould keeps talking about how important and new his theory is, but what is he really saying? That human behavior is explained by maximizing option, and we should keep our options open. Well, duh... Who would suggest otherwise? I don't really think that's very earthshattering. I confess I'm no student of evolutionary science, but I am a student of philosophy and human behavior. Gould quotes Kant and Hume, but I don't see him grapple with Kant or Hume at any point in the book, not to mention Hegel, Aristotle, Bergson, etc. How does a laborer in a gulag maximize options? How does a slave on a plantation maximize options? How does a child dying of leukemia maximize options? The Theory of Options gives us no clues about these questions, but for any complete theory of human behavior to work, it has to answer these questions. This book reads like a bad, and uncorrected, master's thesis. Gould seems to have gotten caught in the same trap many graduate students do. Just because his ideas are new to him doesn't mean they're new to anyone else.

Book Description

The book is aimed at graduate students, researchers, engineers and physicists involved in fluid computations. An up-to-date account is given of the present state of the art of numerical methods employed in computational fluid dynamics. The underlying numerical principles are treated with a fair amount of detail, using elementary methods. Attention is given to the difficulties arising from geometric complexity of the flow domain. Uniform accuracy for singular perturbation problems is studied, pointing the way to accurate computation of flows at high Reynolds number. Unified methods for compressible and incompressible flows are discussed. A treatment of the shallow-water equations is included. A basic introduction is given to efficient iterative solution methods. Many pointers are given to the current literature, facilitating further study.

4 out of 5 stars good for the experienced.......2002-09-18

hi all,
this book is not appropriate for the beginners to CFD so i don't recommend it for the instructors who are looking for a introduction book. The tensor notation is also not easy to grasp for the not experienced. Besides the language of the book is not clear and not enough to let the reader apply without referring to another book. This is probably because the book has covered a lot of CFD concepts so deep explanation on every item is not provided.
However I would recommend this book for experienced CFD'ers since it covers many concepts and it can be used as a good referring material.

4 out of 5 stars A good and almost complete book.......2002-02-22

Well, I've read the 2nd Vol. of this book (the first is about basic Mathematical Methods in Physics). The vol. II contains a complete and well explained treatment of Group theory in Physics, a good and equally well explained review of Manifolds, tensor calculus on Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian Manifolds, Mathematical aspects of General Relativity.
In brief: a good book on necessary maths for those who want to get a matemathical basis for QFT and GR. It contains a (first) good treatment of group theory (very useful for QM and QFT) and an original treatment of tensor analysis on manifolds based on a geodesic coordinates formulation (not the best for a first study but stimulating for those who already have a basic know-how of the subject) . A recommendable reference.

Few people studying Gauge Field Theory need to be convinced of the importance of the work of 't Hooft. This volume contains a selection of articles and review topics covering his well-known studies on the renormalization of non-Abelian gauge theorems, topological phenomena in gauge field theory and thoughts on the role of black holes in quantum gravity.
The chapters are tied together by thoughtful commentaries which provide a background and the illumination of hindsight - together they form a clear and coherent picture of the physical and theoretical importance of gauge theories and the gauge principle. This book is ideal for students and researchers.
Gerard 't Hooft is Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Utrecht, The Netherlands. He has taught at Harvard, SLAC and Caltech prior to his present position. Other distinguished honors include being awarded the Dannie Heineman Prize, the Honorary Doctorate of Science from the University of Chicago, Wolf Prize of the State of Israel, Pius XI Medal (Vatican), and the Lorentz Medal (KNAW, Amsterdam).

In 1981, Marilynne Robinson wrote Housekeeping, which won the PEN/Hemingway Award and became a modern classic. Since then, she has written two pieces of nonfiction: Mother Country and The Death of Adam. With Gilead, we have, at last, another work of fiction. As with The Great Fire, Shirley Hazzards's return, 22 years after The Transit of Venus, it was worth the long wait. Books such as these take time, and thought, and a certain kind of genius. There are no invidious comparisons to be made. Robinson's books are unalike in every way but one: the same incisive thought and careful prose illuminate both.

The narrator, John Ames, is 76, a preacher who has lived almost all of his life in Gilead, Iowa. He is writing a letter to his almost seven-year-old son, the blessing of his second marriage. It is a summing-up, an apologia, a consideration of his life. Robinson takes the story away from being simply the reminiscences of one man and moves it into the realm of a meditation on fathers and children, particularly sons, on faith, and on the imperfectability of man.

The reason for the letter is Ames's failing health. He wants to leave an account of himself for this son who will never really know him. His greatest regret is that he hasn't much to leave them, in worldly terms. "Your mother told you I'm writing your begats, and you seemed very pleased with the idea. Well, then. What should I record for you?" In the course of the narrative, John Ames records himself, inside and out, in a meditative style. Robinson's prose asks the reader to slow down to the pace of an old man in Gilead, Iowa, in 1956. Ames writes of his father and grandfather, estranged over his grandfather's departure for Kansas to march for abolition and his father's lifelong pacifism. The tension between them, their love for each other and their inability to bridge the chasm of their beliefs is a constant source of rumination for John Ames. Fathers and sons.

The other constant in the book is Ames's friendship since childhood with "old Boughton," a Presbyterian minister. Boughton, father of many children, favors his son, named John Ames Boughton, above all others. Ames must constantly monitor his tendency to be envious of Boughton's bounteous family; his first wife died in childbirth and the baby died almost immediately after her. Jack Boughton is a ne'er-do-well, Ames knows it and strives to love him as he knows he should. Jack arrives in Gilead after a long absence, full of charm and mischief, causing Ames to wonder what influence he might have on Ames's young wife and son when Ames dies.

These are the things that Ames tells his son about: his ancestors, the nature of love and friendship, the part that faith and prayer play in every life and an awareness of one's own culpability. There is also reconciliation without resignation, self-awareness without deprecation, abundant good humor, philosophical queries--Jack asks, "'Do you ever wonder why American Christianity seems to wait for the real thinking to be done elsewhere?'"--and an ongoing sense of childlike wonder at the beauty and variety of God's world.

In Marilynne Robinson's hands, there is a balm in Gilead, as the old spiritual tells us. --Valerie Ryan

            Book Description

Twenty-four years after her first novel, Housekeeping, Marilynne Robinson returns with an intimate tale of three generations from the Civil War to the twentieth century: a story about fathers and sons and the spiritual battles that still rage at America's heart. Writing in the tradition of Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman, Marilynne Robinson's beautiful, spare, and spiritual prose allows "even the faithless reader to feel the possibility of transcendent order" (Slate). In the luminous and unforgettable voice of Congregationalist minister John Ames, Gilead reveals the human condition and the often unbearable beauty of an ordinary life.

It's 1956 and Pastor Ames is journaling a life letter to his seven-year old son, an extraordinary blessing from his second and younger wife.

Warning #2. It will slow you down. Way down. Gilead will prick your emotions, then trigger snickers that balloon to belly laughs. Why read it? It's a masterpiece of writing, words and ideas. It will inspire your vision for excellence. It's not a leadership or management book, but it is.

            5 out of 5 stars God Drunk.......2007-09-30

The novel Gilead by Marilynne Robinson is pretty great.

The voice in Gilead is wonderfully convincing. The narrator is a minister in his 70's who's got a bad heart and is writing to his 7 year old son who will never probably be able to know his father really, know what his father was like. So the minister starts telling his life story which involves telling about his father who was also a minister and his grandfather who was also a minister, one who rode with the abolitionist John Brown. The book is a sort of history of religion in America across the last 150 years, talking about Karl Barth and Sartre, and talking about how God gave the American people visions back then to encourage us to break the chains that bound the Africans to the mud of slavery.

And this novel also gives a beautiful evocation of life in Kansas and Iowa since the middle of the 19th century. Robinson, who's from small town Idaho I believe, really knows how to write down what it's like to live the kind of quiet life you get in places like Charleston, Illinois, a town I lived in for 25 years. The minister's son in the novel is 7 years old in 1956. So, for me, there are also lots of charming moments that remind me of my growing up. The boy's watching the Cisco Kid (one of my favorites) on a tiny TV set, going to movie theaters to see movies about US Marshalls in wide brimmed sombreros rounding up bad guys riding hard-tracking mustangs, etc. It does take me back.

I like the history and the prairieness and the popular culture references a lot, but I'm not sure what I make of the novel finally. It is so Christian, so God taken and God drunk. I figure that maybe Robinson is arguing that Christianity should return itself to the sort of humility it had at some point in the past when it was beset by existentialism. But I'm not sure if Christianity ever had that sort of humility. I know that the Catholicism I knew in the 50's was never humble. It was pretty muscular. The Pope was a sort of ecclesiastical Uncle Sam rolling his sleeves back to punch the God-cursing Commie specter of Joe Stalin in the nose.

Are there any humble religions? I know there are humble people inside (and outside) religions, but humble religions? Self effacing religions? Head bowing religions?

I'm not sure. But I do recommend Robinson's book. It's thoughtful and beautifully written and makes you wonder about things worth wondering about.

3 out of 5 stars Book Club selection - Calm and Detached.......2007-09-27

I really wasn't sure about this book even after I ready it. It is very well written, and interesting. There are no chapters at all, just one long narrative in first person. The story was set in the early 50's and the main character recounted episodes from his life of 70 or so years. Sometimes it was difficult for me to remember the year the events may have taken place. And the main conflicts of the book were boring to me, Yawn. I did like this book but I couldn't love it. It was a nice easy read, calm and collected.

2 out of 5 stars I'd like to love it, but I was bored.......2007-09-16

The novel is written beautifully, but I was waiting and waiting for something to happen. This is like some of the novels and short stories I had to read when I was in undergrad where I can clearly see the literary merit, but the story is really lacking for me. I'm glad I read it, but I won't re-read it.

The Stories and art in this volume of whimsey share one important element. All were generously contributed in an effort to aid the victims of terror in northern Israel. Many of these artists are the leading voices of their respective genres-their politics and points of view vary sufficiently to create a stout dialogue. The result of their joining is BALM IN GILEAD, a delicious anthology of artistic speculations and meditations that, despite theological nuances, move beyond the boundaries of culture to join in a single voice of hope.
