This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA DEPT OF PHYSICS report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A894473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The purpose of this work was to investigate the use of an Emispec Vision system to analyze energy dispersive x-ray spectra (EDS) obtained with the Topcon 002B transmission electron microscope (TEM) in the Materials Science Laboratory at the Naval Postgraduate School. A series of tests performed with a standard NiO sample revealed that the TEM column and EDS detector were operating in a satisfactory fashion. NiO spectra acquired with different sample tilt- angles were used to test the Emispec software. An improved setup configuration, in which accurate quantification is obtained with the sample at zero tilt-angle, was developed. Quantification tests performed with TiO2, Cu-Al2O3 and alumina- YAG (with 2.5% TiO2) samples confirmed the accuracy of the new software setup. Line profiles across the alumina-YAG interfaces were also recorded to verify the performance of the Emispec system for spectrum profile acquisition and to investigate the Ti distribution at the interface of the alumina-YAG heat-treated sample.

Very good. The book goes directly to the issue of what X-ray fluorescence is and its applications. Most books in the field explain lot of techniques and do not treat fluorescence properly. Just to remind, it is one of the most used X-ray techniques in the industry. It was about the time for someone to write a book only about fluorescence.

IT COVERED BOTH TECHNIQUES AND PRECAUTIONS.......2003-03-30
Apart from hinting that this book is more expensive than I had expected, there is no negative comment I have for it.
It is a well-defined lab manual, which will be useful for both students and investigative scientists. The book covered all aspect of microbiology: including related parasitology topics.
It explained various methods used in the identification and classification of all types of microorganisms. High-level undergraduates should appreciate the directives it gave concerning culture-media preparation, as well as sequential isolation of bacteria, fungi, viruses, protozoa, and microscopic algae. The same applies to its handling of general microscopy: including the advantages and disadvantages of each type of microscope. This is a very fine companion, which discussed every technique and precaution used in contemporary microbiology lab.

La microbiología es la rama de la biología más interesante, conocer el metabolismo y forma de vida de las bacterias va más halla de lo que uno puede imaginar, cada una tiene su propio nombre y caracteristicas que las distinguen unas de otras. A mi parecer las enterobacterias es lo más emocionante que puede existir en esta área, su identificación es una tarea entretenida y muy emocionante. La microbiología es lo máximo.

I found this book to help me a lot for microbiology lab. The pictures are excellent quality and serves as a great reference for the microbiology text. I also used the following:

This study guide had great questions and answers and helped me pass micro with ease. It showed me what to focus on for class exams.
COVERED ALL THE LAB FUNDAMENTALS.......2003-03-12
This "Microbiology Laboratory Fundamentals and Applications" is not a very big volume, but it left no question unanswered as regards it scope. From bacteriology to immunology, mycology to virology; George Wistreich provided valuble practical guides here.
Apart from shedding light on general lab techniques, this practical-oriented book directs its reader on how to isolate, culture, and identify various species of micro-organisms. It analyzed the basics of microscopy, staining methods, preparation of culture media, optimal incubation, and many others.
Designed for the inexperienced, this book used simple directives in all of its chapters. Most microbiology and medical lab science students will value its guidance. Its focus is medical laboratory; yet, it did not fail to browse many techniques which are of industrial importance.
This book will be of great benefit to any student who relies on it. Meanwhile, its rather high price force me to add that there are some cheaper alternatives in the market.

Among the most continually referenced books in my office.
Although both editions were intended as lab study material, Benson's compact spiral edition is a simple yet comprehensive microbiology reference manual for the practicing physician.
MEMORY-REFRESHING LAB MANUAL.......2003-04-03
Just like its 'complete version' sibling, the price of this 'short version' "Microbiological Applications" lab manual is on the high side. However, the book did a good job in sieving and replicating, (as concise as possible), the contents of its 'big-brother'.
This manual dealt with every practical issue relating to undergraduate microbiology course. It is a compact body of practical information, which also paid enough tribute to the theoretical portion of its subject. Almost every information undergraduates would need in microbiology lab is present in it.
Still, I would add that the structure of this abridged book makes it more suitable for revisions. Anybody who wants an indepth coverage of microbiological techniques should simply add eight dollars to the listed price of this book and (instead) buy the 'complete version'. Go for this 'short version' only if you need a memory refresher.
Great lab manual.......2002-07-19
I loved it! It's short, straight to the point, the experiments work, and everything is illustrated just great. It was a joy to work with this book.

I first read this book when I was in college, and fell in love with it. I still read it about once a year, just to stay in touch with it. It's the best book I've ever found on goal-setting and establishing a place in the world for oneself--it packs a maximum amount of wisdom into the minimum number of words and does so in a way that is very enjoyable to read.
Buy two--one for yourself and one for your child!

I've heard the title of this book quoted for years. When I saw a copy at my inlaws house, I decided to read it.
Although it doesn't take lots of time to read, the return on time invested can be incredible. This is probably the best book I've read on goal setting--and I've read a ton.
I particularly like Campbell's realistic approach. He doesn't try to get you to squeeze your life into a predetermined, micromanaged mold. Instead, he offers lots of advice on how to increase your options as you go through life.
I'll be getting this book for my favorite high school grads for sure. But if you're a little past high school, as I am, don't count yourself out. This book could help just about anyone.
Fantastic - required reading for EVERY highschool student!.......1999-08-23
This book helps you to understand the things you should consider throughout your teenage years, or even later, that will influence your adult life. It particularly focuses on choosing a career. The primary point is how to ensure you get and keep lots of options open throughout your life. Although it's really written for highschool students, college students would find it useful also. Actually, it's valuable even for adults. Very easy reading; only takes about an hour to read, but is well worth the time.
