Book Description

This text's clear explanations and descriptions of the mechanisms of chemical reactions teach students how to apply principles in order to predict the outcomes of reactions. Early coverage of acid/base chemistry allows students to quickly grasp the concept that the structures of organic compounds determine their chemical reactivity. This new edition offers a strengthened focus on biological applications that renders the text more accessible to the majority of organic chemistry students and more consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of scientific research.

This text's unique pedagogy encourages meaningful analysis and evaluation. "A Look Ahead" sections at the beginning of each chapter introduce the chapter's main topics and objectives. "One Small Step" features apply familiar concepts to new reagents and reactions, encouraging students to analyze material rather than memorize the outcome to each new reaction. "Visualizing the Reaction" features help students recognize important reactions by demonstrating the complete mechanisms for each type of reaction. The "Problem-Solving Skills" sections offer students a systematic approach to solving organic chemistry problems, allowing them to reason their way to a solution. End-of-chapter materials include a summary that offers a concise review of major concepts or end-of-chapter tables that summarize the reactions that appear in the chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-18

This is the book I learned organic I from. When i tried to take organic II at a different school they used a different book, it was more confusing and poor at explaining things (solomons and fryhle). As a student, i think this is a great choice for a book, it was easy to use and the review problems were helpful (though you need the student answer guide).

4 out of 5 stars Great for reference and review.......2005-03-30

I own several organic chemistry books: Organic Chemistry By Solomons and Fryle, this book (an older edition), Schaum's Organic chemistry, and Organic Chemistry as a second language. I think that this book lacks in the substitution and elimination reaction chapters. My teacher explained that wonderfully and if you get a good book that explains that well such as organic chemistry as a second language or have a good teacher then Ege's book will make more sense in the syntheses chapter. This book does a great job explaining mechanisms and expects you to know how to write them out unlike Solomons and Fryle who care more about products than how you got them. The summaries and concepts maps are great. The other problem I found with this book is that some of the problems are very advanced (as in graduate level) and she expects you to know things that are not covered in the book until later such as the names of certain organic molecules which are pertinent in solving the problem. This author does a great job explaining isomers, quantum mechanics, and includes topics from every branch of organic chemistry. The author explains thoroughly there is a lot to learn from each chapter but you will be well prepared for later classes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-04-09

Simply the best organic chemistry textbook I've seen. I own three organic chemistry texts, and this one is the most helpful, hands-down. Excellent summaries, clear and concise text, very illustrative examples. Comes with a Student Solutions Manual that contains answers to _every problem_ in the text. Fantastic. If you're having trouble learning Organic Chemistry, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars I like this author better than others.......2001-01-09

This author seems to put complex concepts in terms you can easily understand. I am currently studying out of the McMurry organic chemistry book and find it much more vague.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth and detailed.......1999-12-09

Excellent organic chemistry textbook. Many mechanisms and coherent explanations of reactions. Problems throughout the book require a very thorough understanding of the material. Study guide very detailed and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!.......2000-04-30

Dr. Ege taught me organic chemistry when I took organic chemistry in my undergraduate. She is one of not many chemists I have seen thus far that can present her expertise in such a friendly and simple manner. I used her text as a textbook for class and this book gave me valuable knowledge of Chemistry. This new edition has been recently updated and Dr. Ege still maintains her unique talent in making difficult subject easy. For those who are afraid of taking this burdensome class. Try reading this text and do the problem sets given at the end of each chapter. I am sure that you will love organic chemistry like thousands of Dr. Ege's students. This book is well organized, clear, comprehensive and ideal for future reference. It may seem too expensive, but you pay a little more for a much better one...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide! I loved the "Concept Maps"........2004-09-08

Any Organic Chem student using the Organic Chemistry: Sructure and Reactivity text will benefit from this supplemental text. The study guide contains solutions to problems in the main text as well as excellent concept maps and additional practice problems. Material is well organized and easy to work through. The study guide provides plenty of practice for building competency in OChem. Speaking from the perspective of a pre-med student, this book helped me focus on the areas of OChem that I needed to work on. Overall, I highly recommend it for all students already using the main Structure and Reactivity text.

    Book Description

This book for advanced undergraduates covers areas of mechanistic and physical organic chemistry in a non-mathematical way. The topics included are essential in any modern chemistry degree, yet are not included in standard organic chemistry textbooks for undergraduates. The book starts with a consideration of molecular vibrations and intermolecular interactions, and introduces the use of potential energy profiles and reaction maps to describe organic chemical transformations. The relationship between kinetics and organic reaction mechanisms is then explored with special emphasis on the interpretation of activation parameters. The relationship between molecular structure and chemical reactivity, i.e. correlation analysis, is then covered, followed by a chapter on catalysis of organic chemical reactions in solution by small molecules. The treatment of catalysis explores how the molecular structure of compounds determines their reactivity either as substrates or as catalysts. The final chapter is devoted to isotope effects in mechanistic organic chemistry, concentrating on deuterium kinetic isotope effects.

            Book Description

The one-step organic synthesis with metals discovered by Barbier almost 100 years ago was widely applied with magnesium as the main metal until the end of the 1960s. In modern Barbier reactions, the magnesium has been successfully replaced with lithium and zinc. More recently tin and aluminium have also been introduced together with other metals such as lead, manganese, cerium etc. Unexpected new developments, e.g., the use of aqueous solvents, are of great interest to synthetic chemists, especially those working with industrial processes increasingly controlled by ever-tighter environmental regulations. This book offers a completely new perspective on a simple synthetic method that has only been reviewed onece before by the same author some 15 years ago. Chapter one traces the development of reactions of metals with organohalides leading on to the Barbier reaction and finally to the Grignard reagent formation reaction. The second chapter deals with synthetic applications of the Barbier reaction. The following chapter discusses Barbier-type reactions with other metals. The fourth chapter is concerned with the detailed mechanism of the reaction. Finally, in the last chapter, technical details are presented which will enable practitioners to perform these one-step reactions smoothly and effectively.

4 out of 5 stars Good for medical doctor or students.......1999-02-12

When I read this book, I was very excited the plot of it. Start with patient case, end with resonable explaination of genetic base of disease. I think it is highly recommandable to the doctors andmedical students who want to connect basic and clinical aspect of medical genetics.

                3 out of 5 stars A good supplement........1998-08-24

This text would make a wonderful supplement to a more detailed molecular genetics text. The book's strength is that it uses a case-study approach, using specific disorders as models of genetic concepts. The weakness of the book is how it deals with biochemistry. I feel it assumes the reader has a pretty good prior understanding of everything from DNA structure and molecular dogma to molecular genetic analysis and lab technique. Overall, a very readable book.

                  Book Description

Aimed at graduate physics and chemistry students, this is the first comprehensive monograph covering the concept of the geometric phase in quantum physics from its mathematical foundations to its physical applications and experimental manifestations. It contains all the premises of the adiabatic Berry phase as well as the exact Anandan-Aharonov phase. It discusses quantum systems in a classical time-independent environment (time dependent Hamiltonians) and quantum systems in a changing environment (gauge theory of molecular physics). The mathematical methods used are a combination of differential geometry and the theory of linear operators in Hilbert Space. As a result, the monograph demonstrates how non-trivial gauge theories naturally arise and how the consequences can be experimentally observed. Readers benefit by gaining a deep understanding of the long-ignored gauge theoretic effects of quantum mechanics and how to measure them.

                    Book Description

This text attempts to present the whole range of quantum mechanics, from the fundamental assumptions to the experimental numbers. The author presents a unified theoretical formulation and includes examples from recent research. Earlier editions of this text have become a standard text and reference work; it has been reprinted and translated.
In this third edition, the author has made some minor corrections of the previous edition and has added two new chapters: one on quantal phase factors and their consequences (the "Berry phase") and another on the gauge theory of molecular physics.

Caution, the description of the book given here is incorrect. The table of contents and one of the booknews reports refer to Schwabl's QM, whereas the other booknews and one of the customer's comments are obviously about a book by Greiner. Bohm's QM differs from other QM books in that it pays considerable attention to mathematical formalism (e.g. rigged Hilbert spaces) but also tries to show the connections to experiments. It pursues an algebraic approach to nonrelativistic QM which is well suited for a graduate course, not for a first introduction. All the presented topics---ranging from operator algebras, angular momentum, and scattering theory to Berry phases---are discussed exhaustively and mathematically illuminating. Regrettably, second quantization and the quantization of the EM field are not treated.

                      Book Description

Progressing from the fundamentals of quantum mechanics (QM) to more advanced topics, Quantum Mechanics: Foundations and Applications provides a comprehensive examination of many applications that pertain to modern physics and engineering. With nearly 200 problems, the book begins with an introductory chapter that reviews historical landmarks, discusses classical theory, and establishes a set of postulates. The next chapter demonstrates how to find the appropriate wave functions for a variety of physical systems in one dimension by solving the Schrödinger equation where for time-independent cases, the total energy is an eigenvalue. The following chapter extends this method to three dimensions, focusing on partial differential equations. In subsequent chapters, the author develops the appropriate operators, eigenvalues, and eigenfunctions for angular momentum as well as methods for examining time-dependent systems. The final chapters address special systems of interest, such as lasers, quarks, and hadrons. Appendices offer additional material, exploring matrices, functions, and physical constants. Relating theory with experiment, Quantum Mechanics: Foundations and Applications provides basic and complex information for physicists and engineers.

                      Book Description

The conformal group is the invariance group of geometry (which is not understood), the largest one. Physical applications are implied, as discussed, including reasons for interactions. The group structure as well as those of related groups are analyzed. An inhomogeneous group is a subgroup of a homogeneous one because of nonlinearities of the realization. Conservation of baryons (protons can't decay) is explained and proven. Reasons for various realizations, so matrix elements, of the Lorentz group given. The clearly relevant mass level formula is compared with experimental values. Questions, implications and possibilities, including for differential equations, are raised.

                      2 out of 5 stars Awkward..........2007-06-15

First published in 2001 and now republished, this book is completely different from what you would expect from a "normal" textbook on mathematical physics. It has more text than formulae and the text is more or less a soup of self-citations and filled with personal scientific innuendo. The author, for instance, does not believe in the vacuum being "filled" with virtual particles, notwithstanding the experimental evidence for it, such as the Casimir effect. He calles people who do "believe" it (as if it were religion) "fools". He does not provide alternatives, but merely states his disapproval.

The text does NOT cover quantum field theory (just some (nearly trivial) basics on the Fock space at the end of the book, which can be found in any more advanced text on quantum mechanics), the conformal group is discussed neatly but not completely satisfactorily, and conformal field theory is treated very poorly (if at all!). Ronald Mirman hammers on "physics respecting its geometry", but does not provide much mathematical background for it.

Furthermore, the author is an independent researcher, which is underlined by the fact, that he does not know what belongs to a modern education in physics and what does not. He, for example, writes that the value of group theory is underappriciated in theoretical physics, which is absolutely nonsense: mathematical physics, especially particle physics, is soaked to the bone with the representation theory of Lie algebras (and in fact would not exist fully without it, to be frank).

The first chapter contains the relevance of the conformal group, in which the author does not state its application in statistical physics and string theory (which - in an online article - he thinks is useless and wrong). In this book, he talks about scale invariance of complete systems (and the role of dilations) and the relation between accelerated observers and special conformal transformations, which is interesting but not backed up mathematically much. In the second chapter, the Möbius group is treated on a basic level - the transformation of special curves (intersections of planes and conical surfaces) under the PSL(2,C) group. A bit on the Clifford algebra is given as well, but not much (and it is completely useless in the text apart from mentioning that there are fermions and bosons obeying different algebras). The conformal group, its subgroups and "similar" groups (compact and noncompact versions of so(n,m) and their covers su(n,m)) are given, but this is hardly a plus, since it is either so easy that any undergraduate could do the calculations or it is not relevant. The final chapter is about conformal field theory, but not in the usual sense (see books by e.g. Di Francesco e.a., Ketov, Kaku, Hankel, etc. for that). Mirman tries to explain what fields are and why they are useful, and what conformal transformations might be used for, but does not do much with it. Then, there are two appendices, which are not interesting either (representations of the Lorentz group & what masses of particles "tell" us - sounds more like a crystal ball to me than science!).

Besides, he says that (a large part of) mathematical literature "tries to hide [its] worthlessness under a pile of esoteric, but meaningless, language", which is more a self-description than a specification of mathematics.

The printing inside the book is okay, except that occasionally he inserts a Maple code into the text, which does not help anything and destroys the typesetting. The cover looks much better on the picture of amazon. In reality, it is a scan of the original 2001 cover, which has then been streched for the new one (at least it looks like that has been done) and one can see individual pixels.

The price is okay, although for 15$ you can get much better pieces on mathematics and physics from Dover Publications! Or invest a bit more for QFT by Itzykson & Zuber (Dover) and a CFT book by one of the authors given above.
