It's GREAT!.......2002-09-13

I use this book in a university setting for music and music ed majors who need to pass a piano proficiency test. Being able to harmonize and transpose single line melodies WITHOUT CHORD SYMBOLS provided is part of the test. In preparation for this part of the test students need to practice harmonizing and transposing many examples. This book provides excellent examples for this purpose in many keys. I recommend it highly.

The Title of This Book Is Utterly Misleading.......2000-12-29

I waited quite a while for Amazon to procure this book for me, and it was with high hopes and expectations that I examined it, yesterday, when it finally arrived. The cover looked promising, as did the upbeat introduction. I began leafing through the book, and for the first 23 pages I was pleased. Then, alas, came a bottomless pit of worthless, un-explained, un-documented examples beginning on page 24 and continuing up to and including the last page of the book. From page 24 to the end of the book is utterly, totally useless. It consists of melodies, all lifted from the public domain and nearly all attibuted to composers such as Mozart. There are very few chord symbols notated on these melodies, and all of them are treble cleff only. Page 23 says to apply the lessons taught in the first sections of the book, to the practice material that ensues. This book is so useless, and unuseable, that it is actually hard to get mad at the authors. I can only assume that they are so totatlly, utterly out of touch with the real world that they truly don't understand that a huge amount of borrowed melodies with no explanation or examples of the correct way to harmonize them, is simply unacceptable to the vast majority of readers. There is nothing whatever in this book on the subject of transposition. I cannot imagine why the word "transposition" was part of the title. I say this somewhat authoritatively, as I have personally spent that last 6 months teaching himself how to transpose at the piano in all 12 keys. There are so many excellent books on keyboard harmony and voicing available through Amazon, that is is expecially ironic that this worthless book has a mis-leading title that will probably fool a lot of people into buying it the way I was. I cannot think of anything positive to say about this book. It should never have been published. The authors have not written enough of a book to even consider them real authors. It doesn't get any worse than this book. Any book, even a telephone book, is better than this book.

A Johns Hopkins Money Shot! .......2006-12-18

Dr. Money wrote eloquently and of course authoritatively about topics most would rather not give much thought to. Given that the paraphilias (typically referred to in common vernacular as "sexual perversions") he researched and profiled in Lovemaps continue to infect a new crop of sex offenders in each new generation, a book of this type is a fabulous resource yet sometimes disturbing read. Addressing everything from coprophilia and urophilia to child molestation and rape, Money presents it all with a brutal realism.

One key point Lovemaps presented is the concept of the window of vulnerability. Through Dr. Money's exhaustive studies he was able to pinpoint how sexual perversions or "paraphilias" develop. Paraphilias generally only exist in teens and adults if a traumatic incident happened to them when they were between the ages of five and eight. Hence, the ages five through eight appear to be a window of vulnerability. Apparently the traumatic experience need not only be sexual in nature. It also can possibly include verbal, emotional or physical abuse. To cite an example Money profiled in the book: a man had an insatiable need to visit gay bathhouses and peepshows in search of ever larger penises. The cause of his behavior was traced to an event that happened when he was five years old. During his window of vulnerability he was able to surreptitiously view his father showing his big penis to his older sister; he felt excluded and jealous. Another example Money documented was his notion that in some cases autoerotic-asphyxiophilia (arousal dependent on self-strangulation up to the moment just before unconsciousness) has its origins when five to eight year old children hold their breath during especially heavy crying spells. Boys are more susceptible than girls to having their lovemaps "vandalized". A vandalized lovemap essentially means the development of a paraphilia.

Unfortunately in our yet still repressive culture Money felt it necessary to emphasize that parents, educators, and authority figures should be open minded to what he called childhood sexual rehearsal play; basically two youths "playing doctor". Lovemaps proceeded to continually broach the idea that it is virtually impossible for kids to grow up without assimilating the concept that the genitals are a prime source of sin.

Dr. Money was an intellectual giant. While working out of Johns Hopkins University he conducted groundbreaking research into human sexual development, much of it culminating in outline format in Lovemaps. Having been written for both the layman and the professional psychiatric practitioner, Lovemaps is definitely a proverbial must read.

Sexological Review .......2006-03-11

I found Lovemaps a valueable and insightful look at the way individuals relate to sexual behavior and establish their sexual identify and desires based on life experiences which as Dr. Money indicates occurs in childhood and which is unconsciously formed by the individual. I found this book extremely helpful while working on my Doctorate in Human Sexuality and now 6 years later as I continue my research and work as a Sexologist and Sex Therapist. I highly recommend this book to other Sexologist and Clinicians, as well as any man or woman who is interested in learning more about sex and sexual behavior; and in essence more about themselves. Dr. Money is a fraud.......2004-05-27

Dr. Money (a psychologist, not a medical doctor) spent the first 30 years of his career faking a gender experiment at the cost of a boy's sanity. Despite knowledge that the subject of the experiment continued to assert himself as a boy and refused gender engineering, Dr. Money pretended that his experiment in socialization worked 100% on the subject.

Those that support the doctor and dismiss "As Nature Made Him" are those that have a similar bias as the "doctor" and want his falsified findings to be true. The fact that the "doctor" has refused to accept the testimony of his subject and rejected the facts that were allegedly kept from him, demonstrates that he is more interested in his theory (and the wealth that has flowed from it) than the truth.

Lovemaps: ... by John Money.......2003-11-05

An exhaustive analysis of sexuality, especially paraphelia, carefully organized, not too clinical so the lay reader can appreciate. Not a self-help book but can be useful in understanding oneself.

"As Nature Made Him" not helpful.......2002-07-25

I have not yet read this book. But I had to comment that "As Nature Made Him" is singularly unhelpful as a source of understanding of Dr. Money. It tries to blame him and his "ambition" for the tragedy in the raising of a child -- a child in a different country that he could only see in person once a year. I cannot do the adequate historical research to exonerate or implicate Dr. Money or any of the other players. But "As Nature Made Him" is so heavy handed and written from such an strongly "gender is biological" standpoint, that it seems biased.

Not that I blame the author. Bias is almost unavoidable because the issue is strongly political and emotional. (If research were to reveal that gender was mainly environmentally determined, gay groups (and the rest of the GLBT alliance) would have a lot of rethinking to do. However if it were determined that it has a mainly biological causation, social conservatives would have to modify their worldview -- not in the least because other "choices" would be called into question.)

One more thing to mention: Read, one of the writers of the reviews referring to "As Nature Made Him" has reviewed 5 books as of this writing. 4 of those books are by John Money and one is a scholarly tribute to John Money. The "reviews" give a one star rating and solely point to "As Nature Made Him" with no reference to the books being "reviewed." I cannot take these as the statements of a person who has engaged in careful consideration.

A disappointment.......2007-09-27

After the thrill ride of 1st to Die, I was anxious to read the next in the Women's Murder Club series. 2nd Chance wasn't as exciting as the first and 3rd Degree was even worse. The idea of a socialist-ish radical protest group killing off greedy, inhumane, or rotten businessmen was an interesting premise. But I found my interest in the story decreasing as I read. I didn't really care about what they were doing; it all seemed very random and forced. It was never really explained very clearly why they were doing what they were doing and why they were targeting the specific individuals that they were. Like with 2nd Chance, there was a lot more profanity (i.e. the f- word) than 1st to Die. And there was also some odd punctuation that was disconcerting and just plain odd. There were multiple times where an exclamation point was used almost laughably inappropriately. Talk about trying to put some excitement in the wrong way... I was glad that there was some romantic interest for Lindsay and he was a sweet prospect. I hope that they continue on with her having a relationship. I think she needs someone, for support, to come home to more than Sweet Martha. There is some bittersweet, needless tragedy that is handled very poorly- it should've caused more shock and action than it did. I'm still holding out hope that the series will regain the excitement and momentum of the first. Hopefully it doesn't venture even further downhill than this. I would suggest getting these out of the library before you make the investment and are disappointed.

Maybe the new TV show will be better (Fridays at 8pm on ABC starting October 12, 2007).

I was disappointed in this book. This does not mean I will not continue to read Patterson books. I just didn't get into this book. Patterson is an excellent storyteller and all his other books I have read have been great.

Best I've Read So Far.......2007-09-07

I had previously read the 4th & 5th books in this series. I went back and read 3rd Degree over the Labor Day weekend. The other two were great and this one was even better. So yes, it is 5-Stars. This series of books by James Patterson is a winner and I see his next one, 7th Heaven, is scheduled to be released in February '08.

Surprise! You won't see it coming!.......2007-09-05

3RD DEGREE is the third book in Patterson's popular Women's Murder Club series. For those who are new to Patterson, let me assure you that this all-female club ain't no Sex in the City. Instead of talking Manolo Blahniks, these women get right down and dirty. Murder, mayhem and intrigue are the things that brought these women together.

In this book, Lt Lindsay Boxer is once again embroiled in chaos that starts off with the bombing of an Internet mogul's home. The only clue they have is a mysterious message from a group that calls themselves "August Spies". With the murder of another business tycoon following days after the bombing, and another cryptic message, Lindsay knows that it is time for the WMC to come together and pool their resources. But as they unravel facts about the so-called "August Spies", the women realize that they are no longer dealing with murder but outright terrorism. And with terrorism comes the involvement of the Federal Government, in which we meet Joe Mollinari, the Deputy Director of Homeland Security. Allow me to deviate for a moment to say that Joe is to die for. Yes, Lindsay gets a new boyfriend for which I am really happy after the death of Chris Raleigh, which saddened me. But do not be discouraged by this, as the romance doesn't get in the way of the suspense. Moving along, with the appearance of these leftist terrorists comes a threat that becomes very personal. And a beloved character becomes an unforeseen target. Boy, I never saw it coming. Lives would be lost, hearts would be shattered, and you would be left wanting to read more about these amazing women.

James Patterson and Andrew Gross' collaboration has once again resulted in a fast-paced and tough-edged thriller that begs for attention. The thing with the WMC series is it is hard to stop once you start. All the books beg to be finished. Although others are stronger and more compelling, you just cannot help but unravel the mystery, find out who the antagonists are and how the story ends.

3rd Degree (Women's Murder Club).......2007-08-27

This is a great summer read, you don't want to put it down. Fast paced and easy reading. I can't wait to read the next book, I like these women...

I found the other review talking about editorial needs did not refer to the newest edition. This book offers important and practical information for the Reiki practitioner.

Interesting but needs revision.......2000-09-09

Jerrell's book contains interesting and original information, but, as a former editor, I find too many errors reduce confidence in the content. Index points to the wrong pages, illustrations are mislabeled or missing, and there are some content errors. I hope Jerrell produces a new, revised and corrected edition.

Jarrell clearly knows his subject.This book has almost everything (except sacred symbols)one would need. It makes an excellent reference. I, myself, having met and learned my Reiki from David Jarrell cannot speak more highly of anyone than I would of him. He embodies his work and is a patient teacher. His book conveys his confidence in what he understands Reiki to be. A "must-have" for all those who aspire to understand Reiki and incorporate it into their lives.

Good Read .......2007-04-30

Like all the JP books they end as a fantastic thriller however i did find about half way through this book got a little slow for me - still a good read though and because i love Lindsay Boxer our female heroin i'm glad that i have read it so i am up to date with all the WMC series. This book also has a change for one of the characters which introduces a new member to the WMC in the 4th, 5th and 6th novels. You wouldn't want to miss reading this book if you love the WMC

This presents the basic Scottish Rite ritual for the Symbolic Lodge's three degrees which are the foundation degrees for all of Freemasonry. What is interesting is that the majority of Masonic Lodges in the United States use the York Rite ritual for these degrees. Any Mason who is interested in reading the differences of the two rites should read this short work by Albert Pike. Interesting is the "Chamber of Reflection" used in the beginning of the EA degree and the introduction to the elements. Knight Templars are familiar with the Chamber as it is used in their orders. But most non-Knight Templar Masons are not. Another point of difference is the introduction to the elements. Many who are familiar with Mozart's Magic Flute is aware of the passage through fire and water that the heroic couple must endure as part of the initiation. Again most Masons in America are largely unaware of where the elements come from and why they are in the opera. This book contains the basic answer and shows how the Scottish Rite ritual incorporated the elements into its ceremony. For those seeking the "secret" parts of the Masonic rites, you will not find them here. The actual obligations and "secret" parts are not written out. Only those who have completed their Masonic catechisms will have any idea what certain initials stand for and they will have considerable difficulty since the obligations do not match word for word those used in the USA. A very good book for scholars of Masonic ritual or cross-cultural initiations rites but not one I would recommend to the general public. B@P

It is great to have found the missing secret work for the Scottish Rite version of the three Blue degrees. This is an excellent adjunct to Porch and the Middle Chamber.

For over 20 years I have actively examined "why candidates get hired and who does the hiring" from both sides of the college recruiting process. The most commonly asked question heard over the past two decades remains "What can I do with a major in...?" Liberal Arts Jobs answers this query and many, many more. As a job search coach I teach and reinforces skills required for successful search, including resume writing, correspondence, and interviewing. For those I coach and, I hope, those who read my publicatons, "job search is simple, not necessarily easy," because the process is broken down into easy to follow (yet challenging) behavioral steps and easy to accept motivational attitudes. To date, he I have critiqued over 9,500 resumes (I do count) and worked with over 12,000 job seekers (I guess, but don't exaggerate). Reflected in my writings, presentations, and counseling style, I beleive that job search doesn't have to be taken too seriously and that it is best undertaken with humor and positive affect. You, your son or daughter, or a family friend can be successful, even if they majored in English or Art History. Read the book. Be inspired to take action. Set goals. Establish job search and internship strategies. Create resumes and other job search tools. Go for it! Let me know what you think of the book.
