In this splendid retelling of the biblical story of Hosea, bestselling author Francine Rivers pens a heartbreaking romance between a prostitute and the upright and kind farmer who marries her; the story also functions as a reminder of God's unconditional love for his people. Redeeming Love opens with the Gold Rush of 1850 and its rough-and-tumble atmosphere of greed and desire. Angel, who was sold into prostitution as a child, has learned to distrust all men, who see her only as a way to satisfy their lust. When the virtuous and spiritual-minded Michael Hosea is told by God to marry this "soiled dove," he obeys, despite his misgivings. As Angel learns to love him, she begins to hope again but is soon overwhelmed by fear and returns to her old life. Rivers shines in her ability to weave together spiritual themes and sexual tension in a well-told story, a talent that has propelled her into the spotlight as one of the most popular novelists in the genre of Christian fiction. This is one of her best. --Cindy Crosby

Bestselling author Francine Rivers skillfully retells the biblical love story of Gomer and Hosea in a tale set against the exciting backdrop of the California Gold Rush. The heroine, Angel, is a young woman who was sold into prostitution as a child. Michael Hosea is a godly man sent into Angel’s life to draw her into the Savior’s redeeming love. This remarkable novel has
sold over a million copies and is among the top twenty on the ECPA fiction bestsellers list for four years running. A six-part study guide, suitable for individual use or group discussion, is included in this bestselling novel.
ALSO AVAILABLE: Now own this beloved classic in the keepsake hardcover edition!
California’s gold country, 1850. A time when men sold their souls for a bag of gold and women sold their bodies for a place to sleep.
Angel expects nothing from men but betrayal. Sold into prostitution as a child, she survives by keeping her hatred alive. And what she hates most are the men who use her, leaving her empty and dead inside.
Then she meets Michael Hosea.
A man who seeks his Father’s heart in everything, Michael Hosea obeys God’s call to marry Angel and to love her unconditionally. Slowly, day by day, he defies Angel’s every bitter expectation until, despite her resistance her frozen heart begins to thaw. But with her unexpected softening come overwhelming feelings of unworthiness and fear. And so Angel runs. Back to the darkness, away from her husband’s pursuing love, terrified of the truth she can no longer deny: Her final healing must come from the One who loves her even more than Michael Hosea does…the One who will never let her go.
A powerful retelling of the book of Hosea, Redeeming Love is a life-changing story of God’s unconditional, redemptive, all-consuming love.
Story Behind the Book
“Writing Redeeming Love was a form of worship for me. Through it, I was able to thank God for loving me even when I was defiant, rebellious, contemptuous of what I thought being a Christian meant, and afraid to give my heart away. I had wanted to be my own god and have control of my life the way Eve did in the Garden of Eden. Now I know to be loved by Christ is the ultimate joy and fulfillment. Everything in Redeeming Love was a gift from the Lord: plot, characters, theme. None of it is mine to claim.”

Captivating, Interesting, Emotional.......2007-10-08
This is one of my most favorite books. This is the first book I read by Francine Rivers and thought it was wonderful! Our church ladies summer reading group chose it so that's how I came to read it. It's a western story that portrays God's forgiveness and love for us like the book of Hosea in the Bible upon which this story is loosely based. It gives insight into prostitution and sparks some interesting discussion. The main character, Angel, starts out as a beautiful little girl who gets sold into prostitution with no decent role models and doesn't see real love until she meets Michael Hosea who decides to marry her and take her out of the brothel no matter what. Her life is mostly down, but has ups when she's with him, but she feels so unworthy. Eventually, she learns to trust Michael and more importantly, God, who changes her life. Although it is fiction, the characters are well developed and seem very real. I found myself pulling for Angel all through the book, in spite of her poor decisions. Although some parts are very depressing, it has an amazing ending the left me feeling happy. I even picked up a new prayer idea from this book. This book covers a wide spectrum from cruel and depressing to wonderful and joyful, even though it didn't end like I thought it would. I highly recommend this book!
Ghastly!.......2007-10-01
After reading all the reviews, I just had to get this book. After all, everyone just has the most glowing things to say about it. I am agog. This is just a terrible book. The characters aren't interesting and there is nothing challenging about it. Obviously, I am just not getting why everyone loves this book so much, but the writing is average, the characters forgettable and completely boring. I simply do not understand why this book had garnered so much praise! Ugh!
Redeeming Love-Fiction.......2007-10-01
Fantastic Christian book that has several lessons and even has topics for discussion. The book made a terrific "Just Because" gift for friends.
Best Book Ever.......2007-09-29
this is the best book I have ever read, I sent it to all my girlfriends and women family members.
Riveting!.......2007-09-27
This book is a riveting and powerful retelling of the biblical story of Hosea and Gomer. I loved the journey through it - I could feel Angel's pain, her despair, her certainty that she didn't deserve Hosea's love or a better life, that she would always be a prostitute. As for Hosea, he was not, as the hero in a romance novel often is, perfect - he struggled with lust, with anger at God and anger at Angel, and with his desire to do things his own way. Yet his faith always overcame in the end, and by listening to God's direction, he knew a joy unsurpassed.
This book grabbed me in on the first page and didn't let me go until I was finished - it's been distracting me from work for days! I finally just sat down and decided to finish it; I figured it would be faster.
Hope and despair. Love and hatred. Rebellion and submission. Fear and comfort. Confusion and clarity. Excruciating pain and unrivaled joy. What more could you want?
Book Description
There is a rich vein of writing within Anglican tradition that has helped to form the theology and spirituality of the contemporary church. For many readers, much of this material remains unfamiliar and is often difficult to access. Love's Redeeming Work draws together the works of major writers from the sixteenth century to the present day who have contributed to this development. Each selected writer is introduced with a brief biography, which gives background information about the author, and highlights the relationships that existed with others from the same period. This will enable the reader to set the writings in their proper context, enhancing understanding of the material. The selections then follow. In some instances these may be familiar, but other examples will introduce fresh ideas for every reader. Each writer's selection is concluded with a list of source texts, which can encourage readers to explore in more depth those areas which intrigue and excite them. Love's Redeeming Work traces a path that has enabled Anglicanism in particular, and the wider church as well, to develop an ever-deepening awareness of the need for a spiritual depth in the Christian life informed by a better knowledge of tradition. In exploring this material, it is the compilers' hope that readers will find new riches that will encourage and sustain their own quest for holiness.

"Hold fast to that which you have been given...".......2005-04-13
In the foreword to this wonderful collection of Anglican spiritual writings, Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams states two things: first, that it is intended to be something of an enchiridion - a handbook or manual - of the Anglican faith and second, the desire that it will be instrumental in leading to a renewal of Anglican theology. Perhaps this second point that will strike some people as odd, but in reality Williams is only noting what others before him (such as one of Williams' predecessors, Michael Ramsey) have noted: since World War II, there has been a real loss of Anglican identity. It is precisely because of this loss of identity that a handbook for instruction in the faith is needed. Love's Redeeming Work accomplishes this quite admirably.
First, there are over 700 pages of source material. Each author or selection is prefaced with relevant dates (including birth and death), a brief summary of their accomplishments and any other relevant data (such as forced exile, martyrdom, marriage, controversies, etc.). It is fascinating to read about some of the great heroes of Anglicanism fighting and arguing with each other, or being influenced and taught by each other; one can go back and forth between these authors and get a feel for really being in the midst of historical development. Every selection for each author is also referenced so that if one desires to pursue further reading of an author one may do so (assuming, of course, that one can get one's hands on the originals which, in many cases, is sadly doubtful).
Second, the book is divided into three main time periods, each of which begins with an essay on the historical and theological development of the era. The essays are absolutely first rate (which is of no surprise, given that Rowell, Stevenson and Williams are all theologians and historians that orbit a high sphere all their own) and provide a substantive amount of background material. Again, reading back and forth between different authors and noting the influence over time of different persons on each other is a wonderful way of getting into the historical development of Anglicanism; fortunately this book is arranged in such a way that this is made quite possible. Reading the selections in order gives one view; dipping into different selections gives another view that is no less complementary. The chronological arrangement of authors fosters the helpfulness of both.
One thing that one will see as one reads through this is that Anglicanism has a wide variety of streams in it. From early Protestant streams that did not seek to divide the church from its catholic past so much as to offer a reform of the excesses of the late medieval Western church, to those that would be far more Calvinist in their views, to those that would be more far more medieval in their aspirations: all of these are found in Anglicanism.
Furthermore, as one gets away from the motherland (England) in the 19th and 20th centuries, one begins to see some of the ways that Anglicans have both engaged and been engaged by cultures from all around the world. This volume, in fact, is the only place that one is going to find many primary documents on the development of Anglicanism as a world communion: India, Africa and Southeast Asia are all represented in this collection. This is incredibly refreshing as there is much talk about global Anglicanism (especially its being more conservative) but next to no primary sources available; this volume offers a significant corrective to that absence.
Living authors such as Desmond Tutu, Rowan Williams and N. T. Wright are not included in this collection. It would be fascinating to see this collection updated in a generation to see who would be included (the aforementioned surely would be). However, as a reader in Anglicanism - including some liturgical texts, for that matter - it functions magnificently. It does a tremendous job revealing how Anglicanism - the third largest Christian church in the world - has come to be. And, hopefully, in fostering the memory of what has come before, it will be influential in shaping where Anglicanism goes from here on out. For all interested in Anglicanism, this is a volume that can truly be called "indispensable".

Pretty good.......2005-06-18
This book is one in a series. It is not as good as some of the others in the series, such as "Peter's Return" and "Adam's Promise", but it is pretty good. I am not crazy about books where the main female character is not very feminine or a "Girly Girl". Just my preference.

The older Steeple Hill novels are better.......2007-05-05
One of the many reasons I loved this book was because I could actually relate to these Christians. Claire didn't really like being around kids and had even thought about having pre-marital sex with a guy, and Tony (a minister), lied by omission by allowing the townspeople to believe he and Claire were engaged so he could keep his position (as the townspeople wanted a married minister).
That said, I love the setting, a quaint little Iowa town called Millville. I am not into western settings or stories set in Texas. I am from a small town in southeast Missouri, so I could really relate to this place.
As a Christian, I get sick of reading about Christians who are always nice even when someone isn't nice to them and never do anything wrong (or even have an impure thought!), or, if they have sinned in the past, they have repented and sin no more.
I like to read about real people because perfect people are boring. By perfect, I don't mean good, because Tony and Claire were good people, they just weren't perfect, even though they were Christians.
I assumed at the end that Claire was amenable to the idea of a child or two (assuming that Tony wants children and this is important to him), even though she isn't exactly the mothering type (at least not in the beginning), but Claire did a lot of growing up (which is why grown-ups raise children), and I think she'll be ready for the child(ren) if or when they come.
As for the cover, it was perfect--a little white country church in the wood.
This is, by far, the best Steeple Hill novel I have read, and I most highly recommend it.
Sheýs Not Cut Out to Be a Pastorýs Wife, or is She?.......2004-04-30
Claire Waters doesn't like children, doesn't like the settled down kind of married life either. Her best friend has twins, they are a handful and all she wants is away from them. Her father is disappointed that she hasn't married and she'd like to get away from him for a while too. So she decides to look up fun loving Tony Karelli, who she hasn't seen in a couple years.
Tony has just graduated from seminary school and has accepted a position as pastor of small town Millville, outside of Des Moines, Iowa. He wants to do a good job, believes he can too. Then his land lady asks when his fiancée is going to arrive. It turns out that there had been a mix up. The town wants a married pastor and somehow they'd gotten Tony by mistake. Tony is just about to tell her about the problem, when happy go lucky Claire shows up on his doorstep. Even though she'd walked in on the middle of the conversation, she quickly gets the gist of what's going on and to Tony's horror, plays along at being his fiancée and before long she has the whole town eating out of her hand.
So what is it going to cost Tony when the truth comes out? What's it going to cost Claire? Even as Tony is contemplating these questions, he finds himself falling in love in this inspirational romance that had me hook, line and sinker from page one. This is simply a wonderful story and one that you shouldn't miss.
highly enjoyable.......2004-01-05
I really enjoyed this book. It seemed realistic and you could relate to the people. I especially loved the old lady who loved to gossip and how people effectively cut her off. I would recommend this book to anyone. It dealt with what new christians deal with when first going back to church. It showed how God does the changing and people should not judge.
A Christian's Viewpoint.......2002-01-23
With the purpose of getting back at her father, Claire pretends to be engaged to Tony, a recently hired pastor. He goes along with the charade because part of the reason he was hired was due to the fact that his parishioners mistakenly thought he had a fiance. They fall in love...obviously...and Claire "grows up."
I have both good and bad to say about this book. First of all, on a good note, it kept my attention the whole way to the end. All of the books I have read of Cynthia Rutledge are pretty well written as far as not being boring the reader, and they are not at all hard to get into.
Now what I didn't like: (If you don't care about moral issues in choosing which books to read, it's okay to disregard this section of my review.) I was highly disappointed in what Cynthia seemed to consider acceptable behavior, especially for a pastor who is supposed to be an example and leader to his congregation. He had barely enough qualms in deceiving everyone around him to appease the author of his being in the wrong. He also liked very, very passionately kissing his Non-Fiance an awful lot (even before they developed feelings for each other) for a man who was supposed to be mature and self-controlled, not to mention a witness to others - including a teenage girl who needs guidance. I know this isn't even close to a big issue in secular books, but when published under a Christian series, I believe that authors should be careful as to what types of behaviors they are endorsing. While Cynthia's actions are extremely selfish and comparatively far worse, at least the author points out the error of her ways and does not think of them as acceptable.
Okay, that's it. Like I said, if you want an easy read, go ahead. Just don't take it as a sign that it's okay as a Christian to act in certain ways...And this is the end of my review.
Stand Alone Sequal.......2002-01-11
For those of you who have read "The Marrying Kind" you might remember Taylor's old friend, Tony, and the "baracuda" that Nick was trying to escape named Claire Waters. For those of you who haven't, you'll love "The Marrying Kind", but you don't have to read it to enjoy "Redeeming Claire".
In this book Claire wants her dad off her back about something so she decides to look up Tony and "convince" him to pretend to be her fiance. When she arrives she is surprised to find that Tony is a minister and that his parshiners think he has a fiancee. Claire takes advantage of the situation and off it goes.
This story is absolutly hilarious, but it has some serious points involving a girl who gets in over her head. Claire has a lot of growing up to do and . . . well, read the book. You'll see what I mean.
