unimpressed.......2007-09-22

hmmm. it has taken me like 2-3 weeks to get through 125 pages-this is a very slow read. i keep on reading because the idea is very interesting and every once in a while something interesting happens-but for the most part i am freakin bored to death with this book. maybe it will get better-but maybe i'll just read something else and never find out for sure, yeah, that sounds good-ok, i'm on my way to the book shelf.

Undiagnosed Disease..........2007-06-14

Arabian Nightmare by Robert Irwin is a novel about thriller, horror and paranoid fantasy of Balian, a spy who failed to perform his duty in Cairo, Egypt. Balian, who came to Egypt through Alexandria, as part of Pilgrimages to St Catherine in Sinai Hill had to stay in Cairo for three days before continuing their journey since the grandson of Sultan of Mamluke was going to be circumcised, a big party would take place. Balian who came not only as pilgrim but also as a spy to learn the Mamluke movement went to Mareotis Beach where he met Giancristoforo Doria who then told the story of a father who would kill a son for two dinars. It indeed happened and the play was real as if he indeed had mutilated his son. After getting paid the money, they left; but the next morning in Alexandria, they both were seen in front of a cafe having breakfast, well and so healthy. That was the first perfect illusion to be encountered in Cairo.

Balian red the book Giancrostoforo left, written in Arabic with some rough English translations in between paragraphs. Very Strange. After reading the book, he began to dreams non-sense things. When he woke up, his mouth and nose were bleeding, his body was aching. He also met Zuleyka, a whore who taught him sex lessons. After meeting Michael Vane and he were told that he had the Arabian Nightmare disease attacking his brain and known it had been done by an ape, a creature of jinn or Satan.

Balian was cured by the Father of Cats, an alchemist curer who had a 'House of Sleeping' designed for all the victims of such disease. He became more unstable and nearly insane, his sickness became worst from day to day especially after his visa request had been denied by Dawadar officials, he suffered and his condition was not much better than a suffering beggar. He went in and out the 'Alam al-Mithal' where his existence was unclear whether he was in the real world or inside the world of fantasy. He met strange creatures, jinn, demon, devil, Satan, and various kinds of creatures from different life zones.

It came to a time that the crime detected and discovered. The Father of Cats was behind everything concerning the Arabian Nightmare disease. He created it. He murdered people, sent diseases to others and all bad things. Eventually he was captured by the Sultan of Dawadar from Mamluke. Balian was healing and he returned healthy. He could eat well now.

At last he decided to find Zuleyka who was found out to be an insane lady of Sultan. By the end the story ends, readers will still question whether what happened to Balian is real or just a fantasy . . .

A haunting, dreamlike novel.......2004-01-25

Robert Irwin borrows the stories-within-stories scheme, well known among Arab storytellers (think about the "arabian night" for instance....). At times this tecnique is taken to such an extent that you'll easily lose track of what's happening... but then who ever knows what's really happening in this oneiric wandering through the streets of Cairo? I tend to love everything that reeks of mystery and/or eccentricity and this novel definitely met my expectations. It's full of absurd, disturbing characters and intriguing machinations, all intertwined with tales/legends that stem from arab folklore. I couldn't put it down until it ended and... I definitely loved the ending ;-)

Arabian Nightmare.......2002-09-12

I was drawn to this book by its literary style, but ended up put off by its distanced diction and its lack of character development. Though exotic sensuality is promised, little is really there on the page, and there's almost no action. Nor could I care about the characters, because they were little more than ciphers. I gave up, bored, about halfway through.

Incantatory, alluring.......2001-08-09

This book, in such a relatively compact space, unfolds and unfolds itself, into stories within stories within stories. The cast of characters is continually shuffled around in a landscape that is equal parts real and unreal. (Cairo itself IS a major character in the story.) The results are very entertaining, albeit very dark. The Father of Cats, in particular, is a particularly chilling villian. I read this book for a week, and each night I would read it in bed, before I fell asleep. Although I never had any nightmares from reading the book--the experience of my own drowsiness when reading the book reminded me of the central issues in the book. It teeters between the waking world and the dream world, and the book succeeds brilliantly when the two are indistinguishable.

Enlightening.......2003-08-29

After 1997, Hong Kong has become part of China. Although Hong Kong's post-1997 has stipulated that Hong Kong will operate under the "one country, two systems" principle, there is no doubt that Hong Kong has begun to integrate with the rest of China.

This fine book examines such integration from the political, cultural and social perspectives. It provides a lot of details as well as facts, and arguments are always supported by evidence.

This book was very painful to read as the "hurt" party. It makes you revisit very painful experiences and feelings, which I had dealt with already. The unfaithful party would rate it 5.

I felt so lost and out of control, I didn't know where to turn - so immediately searched for a book on the subject of infidelity. I was at first hesitant after reading a review claiming the author places blame for the affair on the betrayed spouse -BUT - After reading this book as a betrayed spouse, I believe this is NOT the case.

What she DOES do is address both the wayward spouse and the betrayed spouse equally when taking an honest and often hard look at the relationship before the Affair took place - where there was breakdown in the marriage that may have lead up to the affair. She does clearly state that the wayward spouse IS responsible for their actions and the affair - after all, no one can FORCE someone to CHEAT.

But thankfully, this books delves far beyond finger pointing, and looks for a way to bring partners back toward one another, by dealing with issues in the marriage rather than sweeping them under the carpet. It does this in a supportive, non-judgmental way, that both sides can feel comfortable pursuing. And she gives us simple yet important exercises to do, and action plans to follow, to help us get there. It's a book to be devoured in one sitting, and then read and reread countless times as needed through the different stages of grieving and healing. This book is a true marriage saver - at least, it is for us, and I hope it can be for you, too.

Let me put it as simply as I can:
I (Betrayed Wife) couldn't put this book down, I was so thirsty for understanding - and cried tears of relief when I felt validated in both my feelings and reactions surrounding the discovery of the infidelity.

My husband (Wayward Husband) skimmed through the book with great interest, then went straight to the closest bookstore and bought his own copy. We both now are in our second readings, all the while making lots of notes in the margins, and doing the simple exercises that pop up from time to time. It has helped us to each understand what the other spouse is going through and may be thinking, and has helped us find a way to relate to one another productively.

We have come a long way in two short weeks, and although I know we still have a long way to go, I don't think we would have made it this far (and remained best friends, as we are) without the help in this book.

In fact, the end chapters on Forgiveness are so good, we've also purchased 'How Can I Forgive You' by the same author, to delve even deeper into the moving forward stage of healing and forgiving.

I would recommend these books immediately to any woman I love - and to any couple or man I care deeply about, too - if they found themselves facing infidelity.

For anyone out there hurting this much right now, I feel your pain, confusion and shock - and want you to know you aren't alone. Get this book and you'll see what I mean - you won't be sorry you did.

Excellent Resource for Surviving and Growing after Infidelity.......2007-05-23

After the Affair is a comprehensive and insightful manual that has provided extraordinary help in my life and Im sure will help millions. It helped me to get through the crisis and shock after finding out that my partner was having an affair. It explained the "normal" feelings and helped me to gain insight into what i was going through. After an affair there are of course choices you have. You can stay with your partner and make a committment to working on the relationship or you can move on to the new adventure that awaits you. This time in your life can be truly transformative. This book offers practical information on rebuilding trust if you choose that path. Personally I got a lot out of the book but I chose to move on with my life. The answer lies within your heart. You just need to listen closely. Highly recommended reading for anyone dealing with this challenging situation.

Not my favorite.......2007-05-13

I was not impressed by the advice in this book.I think no two affairs are the same, neither are all waywards or all betrayed spouses.Her approach seemed to be very one size fits all.Maybe it will help some people but it doesn't help all.The old adage of bad marriage=affair needs to be looked at again.Sometimes there are seriously messed up people that have affairs and fixing the 'broken marriage' will NOT fix them.

In the third stage, a road map is provided for rebuilding trust and sexual intimacy, and learning to forgive. Why some partners forgive too easily while others see forgiveness as impossible is addressed, along with how these issues can be handled clinically. In this professional presentation, Dr. Spring discusses the differences in the responses of the hurt and unfaithful partners to an affair and discusses the role of early childhood experiences in shaping ideas about love. She goes on to discuss how infidelity can help couples face truths about themselves, develop more realistic ideas about love and become more intimately attached. She ends the presentation with comments regarding forgiveness. Dr. Janis Abrahms Spring is one of a few psychologists who has studied and written about infidelity. Over the past 22 years she has developed an extensive practice, and more recently this practice has been comprised mostly of couples struggling with infidelity and what to do about it. Her book After the Affair is based on this experience.
