Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics
ASIN: 352729662X |
Book Description
An integrated approach to the molecular theory of reaction mechanism in heterogeneous catalysis, largely based on the knowledge among the growing theoretical catalysis community over the past half century, and covering all major catalytic systems. The authors develop a general conceptual framework, including in-depth comparisons with enzyme catalysis, biomineralisation, organometallic and coordination chemistry. A chapter dedicated to molecular electrocatalysis addresses the molecular description of reactions at the liquid-solid interphase, while studies range from a quantum-chemical treatment of individual molecular states to dynamic Monte-Carlo simulations, including the full flexibility of the many-particle systems. Complexity in catalysis is explained in chapters on self-organization and self-assembly of catalysts, and other sections are devoted to evolutionary, combinatorial techniques as well as artificial chemistry.

Book Description
Lorenzo Curtis offers a new conceptual approach to atomic structure that utilizes conceptual semiclassical models to introduce empirical systematizations of measured data. These models reveal the dynamical behavior of the various interactions that specify the energies and lifetimes of complex atoms. Curtis emphasizes the historical basis of the field as well as the relationship to modern fundamental theory. He also includes many solved problems that provide connections with astrophysics, chemistry, condensed matter, and other related fields.

The best introduction to chemistry........2002-09-14
I have been a practicing research chemist for forty-five years and have also taught chemistry at several colleges. Chemistry: A Conceptual Approach is by far the finest introductory chemistry text I have ever encountered. As its title implies it presents -- in a highly-readable and understandable style -- the fundamental concepts of chemistry as well as the facts of chemistry. Although it is nominally a freshman chemistry text it is so well written and so comprehensive that it serves as an excellent reference work. In fact, although I have dozens of chemistry books in my personal collection, this is the book to which I usually turn first when looking up some chemical concept or fact. One could gain a good understanding of chemistry simply by reading this excellent book.
Book Description
In this hardcover edition, one of the 20th century's greatest physicists reformulates the foundations of the statistical approach in mechanics. Part One describes the older statistico-mechanical investigations; Part Two, the modern formulation of kineto-statistics of the gas model; and Part Three explores W. Gibbs' Elementary Principles in Statistical Mechanics. 1959 edition.

Book Description
Modeling in Transport Phenomena, Second Edition presents and clearly explains with example problems the basic concepts and their applications to fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering and thermodynamics. A balanced approach is presented between analysis and synthesis, students will understand how to use the solution in engineering analysis. Systematic derivations of the equations and the physical significance of each term are given in detail, for students to easily understand and follow up the material.
There is a strong incentive in science and engineering to understand why a phenomenon behaves the way it does. For this purpose, a complicated real-life problem is transformed into a mathematically tractable problem while preserving the essential features of it. Such a process, known as mathematical modeling, requires understanding of the basic concepts. This book teaches students these basic concepts and shows the similarities between them. Answers to all problems are provided allowing students to check their solutions. Emphasis is on how to get the model equation representing a physical phenomenon and not on exploiting various numerical techniques to solve mathematical equations.
* A balanced approach is presented between analysis and synthesis, students will understand how to use the solution in engineering analysis.
* Systematic derivations of the equations as well as the physical significance of each term are given in detail
* Many more problems and examples are given than in the first edition - answers provided

Book Description
In this mesmerizing series of interviews with dedicated people who work to save endangered species throughout the world, an alarming truth emerges: the obstacles of human politics, greed, corruption, folly, and hypocrisy can present as much danger to a species` survival as biological causes. The dramatic lessons of this book shed new light on the problems of declining species and offer hope that we may yet change their fate.
Customer Reviews:
A book not to miss.......1999-05-22
A book not to miss--if one loves the environment and fears for its future.
Watching from the Edge of Extinction is a rare read for many reasons; not the least of which it is written by a husband and wife, who bring different voices and expertise to the project they undertake. Their book offers solid science, culture, and a disciplined attention to factual detail as well as the great shadings of human personalities as this couple sets out to document ten cases of creatures nearing the end of their species' existences on the earth.
What makes the book so fascinating and ultimately such a challenge is that the authors do away with any tinge of moralism and show us that the effort of trying to save a creature is a complex, costly combination of acts and interactions that often absorbs people and groups for periods as long as a lifetime. The passions, victories and defeats inside each story make the book one that should be read one chapter at a time. The political, scientific and practical realities slowly sink in. These are stories that are existential in every sense. The end is not written and even the meaning or consequences of one's actions are not simple to describe or predict. In environmental actions undertaken to protect a species, there are protagonists on all sides. Even the very best of the "good" guys still finds him or herself sometimes disarmed because of the nearly invisible way animals, birds and insects have developed their niches and patterns. These patterns must be understood in order to consider saving a species. Often the very acts of study--such as nearing nests to take population counts--are events that eventually stress the remaining members of the creature. The stories, which are of triumphs and defeats, are deeply involving because they are true. They are sobering because they offer no simple solutions other than rigor and dedication. Often the people who are working to save a species are heroes whom we have never heard of. They are passionate, modest people who sometimes have devoted their lives basically for the reason that it is a shocking reality to face the death not only of an individual but of a group.
The Stearns finish their book with a more literary chapter on the Gibbon who disappeared from China centuries ago. Yet nearly two thousand years ago its being filled the pages of Chinese poetry and its symbolism was painted century after century. This wealth comes to an end.
As our technologies alter our rhythms and reflect our own minds since we invented them, their brilliant book reminds us that most of the world lived without us. The world filled with living creatures showed us other worlds that were not ourselves. They found patterns and ways which now we must assist them in maintaining, before we are left alone on the planet, without bird-song, without howls and roars, and bright spouts from blow-holes. They ask us to think about creatures as committed to experiencing the joy of life as we ourselves.

Excellent!!!.......2007-10-10
This book was fantastic! I've never had an interest in English history before and now I find I'm obsessed. Well written and engaging. It's hard to put down!
Scandalous!.......2007-10-09
I admit, at first I thought this book was a bit of fluff. I realized it wasn't when I found myself unable to leave the story to so much as eat. Don't give up if you've just begun, this book will take you on a ride of intrigue, scandal, ambition, lust, incest and greed. The writing seemed very simple to me, but the story was complex enough to fill in the gap. I loved reading about the Tudors and although I knew it wasn't entirely true, the story was entertaining & shocking enough to keep me reading until the last word.
This story is told from Mary Boleyn's point of view and and tells the tale of the Boleyn family's ambition to get the to the top of the English crown, no matter what the cost...and oh what prices they pay! Mary was chosen by her family to put herself in the king's (Henry VIII) favor (mainly with sex) to rise to the top to benefit her family. Everything seemed to be going well for Mary until her highly ambitious and beautiful sister Anne came to court and stole all of her thunder and did whatever it took her to get what she wanted, and more. In the king's quest for an heir, a son, he leads the country to the height of scandal by divorcing Queen Katherine, who is barren, to open the door for a new marriage...perhaps to a Boleyn.
It's interesting to see the dynamic between Anne, Mary and their brother, George. Rivals from the crib, Anne and Mary were born to be in competition with eachother and were raised for the sole purpose of landing an advantagous marriage. Anne will stop at nothing to land a sucessful marriage to a duke and once that prospect is squashed she goes straight for the heart of the country...the king. She is a shameless, uncaring, evil, ambitious woman, but something about her makes you root for her, in a sick way. For years and years she stops at nothing to get what she wants, but the road she takes to get there is wrought with scandal that puts Anne and her family of unwilling supporters in grave danger.
If you want an engaging read, this is it. How many times did I say the word scandalous in this review? A bunch? That's because it is! Read it, you won't regret it. Also, I think thay are making a movie that is to come out this winter. It's a great time to take in the book.
Life in the court of Henry the VIII....not all it is cracked up to be.......2007-10-08
This is an amazing historical fiction about Mary, the sister of Anne Boleyn. The historical details make you feel as if you are really there. It seems to be very historically accurate as well. I mostly enjoyed reading it... except that after a while the politically charged, cruel, and sometimes evil feel of the life at Henry the VIII's court can be smothering. Towards the end I just wanted to be done with it.
couldn't put it down.......2007-10-07
this was a great book. I did not like the Constant Princess, so I hesitated to read this book. Great story, great writing. Really couldn't put it down.
Historical fiction with a new twist.......2007-10-01
This book kept me riveted even though it is a long book; I didn't want to stop reading it. It certainly made the reign of King Henry VIII interesting! It also points out the sad fate of women in those days. But the main character, Mary Bolyn overcomes her fate by following her heart. This has been my favorite book this year, full of love, sex and ambition., and it is based on a true story!

Customer Reviews:
High Five!.......2006-11-19
Oh man, this was good. Well researched, rich in detail, fair historical accuracy. Magnificent. Buy buy buy!!! Read read read!!!!
couldn't put it down.......2005-12-12
I have read all the books in this trilogy and enjoyed them all. This book made me curios about Henry the eight and all his wives. I don't recomend reading this book if you have anything else to do.
For a historical romance its not bad. .......2005-06-20
Because Gregory's other books tend to be of the romantic genre I haven't read her before. This one was recommended to me, and I am glad to have read it. From start to finish I was entranced by the story. She is an excellent writer and knows how to move the plot along quite seamlessly so that 600+ pages seemed like nothing.
However, call me old fashioned, but I do like some historical accuracy with my historical fiction. While I enjoyed her ideas and theories about character motivations, I do think she was a bit heavy handed. While Anne certainly was not the innocent victim as she has been protrayed elsewhere, she certainly was not the evil witch in the book. And the author seems to absolve King Henry from all blame in the things that she supposedly did alone. As far as Mary, its well to remember that little is really known about her, aside from the fact that she did have at least one child by Henry. I did like how she made Katharine of Aragon a much more complex and interesting persxon. But then, I question her portrayal of the Howards as totally cold, calculating and vicious. There are always at least three sides to every story, and its good to remember that this is one of them.
That being said - if you like good writing, can gloss over the historical inaccuracies, can accept a young narrator who seems to have unusually 21st century sensibilities for her time period, and remember that this is fiction, I'd recommend this book. Excellent summer read.
Compelling & Fascinating History Lesson.........2004-12-08
Well, actually this book is too much fun to qualify as a lesson. Instead,it's an engrossing,can't-put-it-down dealing with two sisters, Anne Boleyn and her lesser known sister,, Mary, whom King Henry the VIII had a relationship with (as well as fathering two of her children )before Lady Anne caught his eye. The book shows(in vivid detail) how Anne manages to get the notorious womanizer undivided attention, first by stealing him away from her more placid sister, then trying to get him to make her Queen,in spite of the Church, people's negative view of their marriage, her own highly outspoken nature,in a time where women had to know their place(or else). And, most importantly, not giving him a son, which leads to her tragic downfall. This book takes you on a journey, makes you think and best of all,is truly entertaining..
A great novel engrosses the reader.......2004-10-22
This is definently an absorbing read, one that I just could not put down.I have read this book many times, and just loved it.After reading this book I developed a hunger to learn more about tudor history. This is definently phillipa gregorys best work yet.If you love tudor history you will love this book, and even if you know nothing of tudor history you will still love this book, its just that good.

Customer Reviews:
A FAMILY AFFAIR..........2004-11-07
This well-known author of historical fiction has outdone herself with this rich and absorbing tale of the notorious Boleyn sisters, Anne and Mary. The Tudor court, with all its pomp and intrigue, is seen through the eyes of the beautiful Mary Boleyn, who at the age of fourteen arrives at court and becomes lady-in-waiting to Katherine of Aragon, Queen of England and wife to King Henry VIII. Although already married to courtier William Carey, Mary captures the heart of King Henry VIII, whose roving eyes land on this innocent young miss.
In the eyes of the grasping and greedy Boleyn family, Mary is but the fatted calf through whom their ambitions, they believe, will become realized. So, they offer her up as a sacrifice to their ruthless ambition. Forced to separate from her husband in order to become the King's mistress, Mary betrays the Queen and becomes mistress to the King, all at the behest of her family. Every step of her affair is choreographed from the wings by her family, with the adept aid of her sly and clever sister, Anne, in the role of chief manipulator.
Mary struggles with her own code of honor and personal morality, which is often in conflict with what is mandated by her family. Still, despite her best intentions, Mary disappoints them, as her nature is not the kind that takes well to intrigue and manipulation, as she has sincere feelings of affection for the King, as well as for the Queen. After bearing the King two children, however, she is set aside by a formidable rival, her own sister, Anne, in whom the Boleyn family now place their hopes and ambitions.
This is, first and foremost, the story of Mary Boleyn, a woman who has generally been reduced to a footnote in history. It is notable, however, that she was the only Boleyn sibling to survive the purges of the Tudor court and who, ultimately, married for love in an age when this was not the norm among those of her class. It is also the story of Anne Boleyn, her rise and fall, as seen through the eyes of her sister, Mary, with whom Anne was to have a lifelong rivalry.
To a lesser degree, it is also the story of their brother, George, a more remote, though no less interesting, personage. His interjection into the story is necessary, as the author attempts to address the issue of incest that arose at the trial of George and Anne Boleyn. She gives quite an interesting perspective on the issue, weaving it, part and parcel, into the story in an effort to explain his downfall, as well his betrayal by his own wife.
Told against the magnificent backdrop of the Tudor Court in all its splendor and majesty, the author weaves a complex tale of greed, ambition, sex, and political machination, as well as unparalleled intrigue, in sixteenth century England. Filled with well-fleshed characters taken right out of the annals of history, the story is one that is sure to delight all those with a love for well-written historical fiction. In particular, fans of beloved author, Jean Plaidy, will enjoy this book.

Justin loves Sade. And Justine is out of control....Set in a world of inner-city grunge bars and clubs, kinky sex, drug-taking desperation, The River Ophelia, explores the uncharted waters of female desire, where the roles of victim and victimized blur and shift. Both an homage to and subversion of de Sade's Justine and Shakespear's Hamlet, it is an explicit account of sexual obsession and violence. In the tradition of Bret Easton Ellis and Kathy Acker, Justine Ettler's novel breaks new ground, and will electrify, shock, and provoke.
