Book Description
Organometallic Ion Chemistry features eight chapters, written by acknowledged authorities, covering the gas-phase chemistry of organometallic ions. Topics covered include: periodic trends in gas-phase thermochemistry of transition metal-ligand systems; ab initio calculations to determine electronic structure, geometric structure, and thermochemistry of metal-containing systems; electronic state effects on metal ion reactivity; organometallic ion photochemistry; applications of gas-phase electron transfer equilibria in organometallic redox thermochemistry. Also included are state of the art mass spectrometric instrumentation used in such studies. Finally, the book features - for the first time in one place - a comprehensive list (containing over 1500 entries) of metal ion-ligand bond energies, obtained from theory and experiment. An invaluable reference source for ion chemists, organometallic chemists and surface chemists, at both expert and graduate student levels.

Book Description
Metals can be dispersed, both naturally and by man's activities, into any of the Earth's elements - soil, water or air. Biological techniques for removing metal pollutants from soil, air or water are now attracting great interest, both because they are seen as more environmentally friendly than chemical treatments, and because, in some cases at least, they can be considerably cheaper. This text looks chiefly at the ways in which metal ions can be removed from the aquatic environment and looks at the various techniques available, including the use of fungi, algae, peat, compost and bacteria.

Book Description
A modern classic, Housekeeping is the story of Ruth and her younger sister, Lucille, who grow up haphazardly, first under the care of their competent grandmother, then of two comically bumbling great-aunts, and finally of Sylvie, their eccentric and remote aunt. The family house is in the small Far West town of Fingerbone set on a glacial lake, the same lake where their grandfather died in a spectacular train wreck, and their mother drove off a cliff to her death. It is a town "chastened by an outsized landscape and extravagant weather, and chastened again by an awareness that the whole of human history had occurred elsewhere." Ruth and Lucille's struggle toward adulthood beautifully illuminates the price of loss and survival, and the dangerous and deep undertow of transience.
Customer Reviews:
Read Gilead First.......2007-09-05
I would highly suggest reading Robinson's other fiction work first. This book is very slow. The pace set does not pick up throughout the book and while the writing is lovely, beautiful in fact, some might not respond well. If you are used to reading fast books, especially fiction/mystery, you may have a hard time with the sentences that take an entire page, with the adjectives that carry on and on as your eyes droop and grow weary with the passing of the sun over the sky. (if you happen to think that I should have just said 'it reads slow' this may not be your book). I HIGHLY recommend reading Gilead first which does have more of a substantial "plot" in my opinion and believable characters, deeper characters. If you love Gilead than this book will be awesome. The writing is poetry. Just slow poetry.
Hauntingly Lyrical Tale .......2007-08-26
This beautifullly written novel is the tale of two girls orphaned by their mother's suicide into the cold mountain lake which took their remote grandfather before they were born. Robinson is a master story teller who uses lush language not to impress but for an efficiency of words. Her vocabulary and diction are "so precise, so distilled, so beautiful that one doesn't want to miss any pleasure it might yield. In a story of such sorrow and lonliness where those two characteristics are palpable, the author is sympathetic to her flawed characters. Ruthie, the child narrator observes that "sorrow is a predatory thing..." She observes that "...in the way people are strange, they grow stranger." Thus she details her custodial aunt's departures from reality and her own descent into madness. "I have often noticed," she says, 'that it is almost intolerable to be looked at, to be watched, when one is idle. When one is idle and alone, the embarrassments of lonliness are almost endlessly compounded." It is not merely that she makes this observation which makes the story great, but that she is able to distill the accompanying emotion into such measured speech.
At first Ruthie describes her younger sister, Lucille, as the child who is mentally ill. It is only after Lucille begins to seek the friendship of her peers, to conform to societal norms, and chooses to move out of the family home and into her teacher's house that the reader realizes that Lucille is the sane sister. "She had remarked to me once or twice... that it was odd to tie back one's hair with grocery string." Ruthie ..." was increasingly struck by Lucille's ability to look the way one was supposed to look... but try as she might, she could never do as well for me." Their aunt, Sylvie kept her clothes and toiletries in a cardboard box under the bed while she slept fully clothed and with her shoes on on top of the covers with a quilt pulled over her. Sometimes she slept out doors on the lawn. She dressed the girls inappropriately for the weather and the occassion. They wore blue sequined slippers of inferior quality to trudge through the muddy roads to school and in orlon sweaters instead of coats on cold days. Their diet was inconsistent and incomplete.
Still Robinson finds humor amidst the sadness. She describes Bernice as an old woman who"...managed to look like a young woman with a ravaging disease..." We all know a few characters who could be described thusly. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of this book. I don't agree with the other reviewers who found it slow or uninteresting. I could not put it down. It read splendidly. I loved her Pullitzer winning Gilead as well. Read this touching tale of tragedy and mental illness. You won't be sorry.
A Bloated Short Story.......2007-07-20
I didn't like this book. I didn't like this book and I'm so sorry I wasted my money and time reading it. I have never seen so much fill and fluff between two covers. I kept reading, thinking it will get better, but it didn't. Very disapointing throughout. If you want a good read, pick up Glass Castle.
Another enchanted reader.......2007-06-20
This novel is enchanting. The opening image of the train accident with all its sensuous detail (the young swimmer who brushes the sleek window on a deep dive) and dark mystery (It was not, strictly speaking, spectacular, because no one saw it happen) set the novel forward on a narrative track that boarders on dream or long ago memory.
Lines like--"Sometimes it seemed to me my grandmother saw our black souls dancing in the moonless cold and offered us deep-dish apple pie as a gesture of well-meaning and despair"--sing through the narrative often and offer still deeper enchantment.
Along with its enchantment, there are other things to admire about the novel. Robinson uses repetitive and rhyming (or perhaps reflecting is a better word) images. And the characters seem destined to lead lives that are reflections (usually dark and a little bit bitter) of the lives lead by their forbearers. It is in this way that the devices of the novel harmonize with the characters and movement.
That said, I found the book slow and somewhat tedious--especially the first 100 pages. I kept reading mostly because I enjoyed the paragraph by paragraph writing. I ultimately did not find the characters particularly engaging. Nor did they really come to life until well past page 120. The idea being perhaps that the first person narrator--Ruthie--did not see a particular distinction between herself and those around her, particularly those to whom she was closest. And as she ages and changes through the novel, she comes to see how the desires of others differ from her own--those moments of distinction and separation are pretty obvious in the novel. But to slog through two-thirds of the novel before the central characters come alive pushes this reader's patience. And it would have been an absolute failure were it not for the caliber of writing. I suppose the argument could be made that the narrator was all the character one could need, but she is so much a part of all that is around her, her character so speculative (she often falls in to what would have happened, or what she imagined happened) that she never really comes alive--until the final third of the novel.
But the narrator's lack of differentiation, the pace of the novel, the events, the literary devices and careful line by line writing, work well to achieve the aim of this novel.
I could not help but compare this novel to Robinson's other work, Gilead, which is one the best novels I have read in a very long time. Gilead does not rely on devices to carry the narrative through, it very quickly becomes its own complete and vivid world, and the characters within that world wrestle with very human situations. Housekeeping has an otherworldly quality--and though enchanting, I am just not as into that sort of thing.
women's fiction.......2007-06-09
Okay, don't send this with your husband on his next business trip. It's very much a women's book as the title implies. It's actually about two girls being raised by aunts who don't do the housekeeping and raise them unconventionally. Which it turns out isn't all bad. But it's a story that happens very very slowly. I think many readers will like the delicate unfolding of Ruthie's life before it burns like ash, but others will roll their eyes and say that not enough is happening. Robinson's a masterful writer, but like Duras, it's the writing that appeals. Kate Gale
Book Description
In this first novel from award-winning writer Sara Rath, the forests and lakes of northern Wisconsin pose a daunting threat to outsider Hannah Swann, who is content with her quiet life in Madison, Wisconsin, where she teaches and writes screenplays about obscure nineteenth-century poets. Her relationship with her college-aged daughter is strained yet candid, and a long-standing affair with a married professor has its own peculiar ups and downs.
When Hannah unexpectedly inherits her uncle's rundown resort, she must head to the northwoods to close up and sell the business. But the only interested buyer is Ingold, an international mining company, and Hannah finds herself reluctantly operating the resort while trapped in the midst of a treacherous dispute between Ingold and Uncle Hal's activist friends.
From safeguarding the wilderness to pursuing elusive new love interests, Hannah has plenty to engage her imagination at Star Lake. A new aspect of her personality emerges, one that is surprisingly courageous and compassionate. Throughout this humorous, elegantly plotted adventure with its appealing characters and lyrical depictions of nature, Hannah encounters the inevitability of change—in herself and in the nostalgic landscape of the deep North.
Customer Reviews:
Enjoyable Read.......2006-11-05
I totally enjoyed this book. It probably meant more to me because I have a Madison and Northern Lake home. I could relate to the cultures of both areas as expressed by the author. I became aware of this book when driving my car from my cabin to Madison and it was being read on Public Radio on Chapter A Day. I couldn't wait to get home and order it.
Captures Wisconsin.......2006-08-08
As a native of Wisconsin who loves the north woods and Madison alike, I enjoyed this book. I think it is always enjoyable to read a fictional story set in a place you are familiar with. Sara Rath did a good job capturing life in Wisconsin, complete with the ever-present mining controversies we have. I also enjoyed the language her northwoods characters use-not too far off the mark!
The story itself transports Hannah Swan, a filmmaker from Madison, into Antler, WI when her long-lost uncle dies and leaves her a Housekeeping Resort. Hannah begins a journey with her inheritence from denial to acceptance of the property, the community, and the people she gets to know.
The story isn't deep, but it is heartwarming. I would say that some of the sex scenes are gratuitous and unnecessary, but other than that, I enjoyed this novel.
A Taste of the Northwoods.......2006-08-02
Star Lake Saloon and Housekeeping Cottages appealed to me for many reasons, not the least is that I happen to be the owner of a Northwoods Housekeeping resort and could relate to the main character, Hannah, on several levels. I enjoyed reading Sara Rath's descriptions of Star Lake, the broken down lodge and cabins, the look of the lake, the smell of the pines. She captures the essence of Northern Wisconsin beautifully. What troubled me about this story, however, is that I never felt a strong sense of empathy for the main character, Hannah Swann. To me, she wants to be a confident take-charge woman, spokesperson for an important cause, but nearly everything she does, she does reluctantly. It was hard to get behind her and cheer her on.
Hannah is a poetry instructor from Madison, Wisconsin, who also writes documentary films. Apparently educated and sophisticated, she is nevertheless having an odd affair with a married man, a "malacologist," which, I learned, is someone involved in the "scientific study of mollusks." His name is Tyler and while his occupation ultimately plays a role in the story, what stands out is his awkward sexual dysfunction, and a couple of sex scenes that almost made me throw the book aside. Most of the other secondary characters are flat and predictable. They include Hannah's daughter, Chloe, a vegetarian with a pierced nose, who is a political activist, and her trusty, but never fleshed-out boyfriend, Eric. Dan Kerry, Hannah's rugged, fishing guide/flannel shirt wearing love interest, and a sleazy lawyer, the villain named Denny. Hannah's mother, Lily, is nosy, self-centered and highly critical of her daughter. On the other hand, the one character who does stand out is the feisty Ginger, saloon barkeep, who is a tell-it-like-it is kind of gal, who not only puts Hannah in her place, but offers a true and entertaining Northwoods vernacular. Whenever Ginger is in the room, it's a guaranteed entertaining read.
There is little mystery involved with the plot of the underhanded mining company supporters trying to take over her newly inherited land and much of what happens is highly predictable and contrived. It's a quick read, the writing is average and I recommend this book to readers who want to get a taste of the great Northwoods. Three and a half stars.
Oh, and by the way, GREAT cover art. Hats off to the graphic designer.
Star Lake Saloon is a "Sleep Robber.".......2006-05-29
Star Lake Saloon is a what my father used to call, "A sleep robber." The author snares you so completely into the life of hcr characters and their dilemma of stopping a mining conglomerate from spoiling the sleepy paradise of a resort in Nothern Wisconsin, that you have to read "just one more chapter" to see what's going to happen. It's a bit like trying to eat one
potato chip.
For those who have grown up with memories of summer sojourns in resorts like Star Lake Saloon it must be nostalgic to read this book. For those of us who were not fortunate enough to have that experience, Star Lake Saloon and Housekeeping Cottages make us feel as if we have.
The novel is complete with sex, romance, mystery and history woven into a tight structure, as well as a very bequiling dog.
Northwoods Confidential.......2006-02-08
The characters are well done, the pace and lifestyle well-represented, and the struggle of historic and environmental preservation versus corporate "progress" well portrayed in this book about Madisonite Hannah Swann's reluctant transplantation to the Northwoods. This is a genre spanning tale of mystery, ecological impact, coming of (change-of-life) age, and reluctant romance. It is marred by gratuitous sex, seemingly stuck in there just to "pidgeonhole" it into a market in which it didn't need to strive to fit. /TundraVision, Amazon Reviewer

Rumiko Takahashi's wonderful soap opera comic book continues to unfold the story of Yusaku Godai, who has his hands full with two women. His only problem is he's too spineless to tell Kozue (the girl he's been dating) that the lovely manager of Maison Ikkoku, Kyoko, is the only woman for him, and too wimpy to tell Kyoko that he's madly in love with her! But that's not all that's going on in this volume of Maison Ikkoku: a drunken kiss from Akemi--the always barely dressed cocktail waitress tenant of apartment 6--causes havoc; Kyoko's boyfriend, Coach Mitaka forms an unlikely alliance; an impromptu costume party convinces little Kentaro that his life is doomed from the start; and a postcard from the past sends Kyoko into a wave of melancholy. --Jim Pascoe
Customer Reviews:
Great!!.......2003-08-25
I only own the first half of Maison Ikkoku, and this graphic novel is one of the bests!
EMBRACED BY ILLNESS:
Godai's cold got worse, and now he's stuck in bed. He's not finding it easy to get better with ongoing parties, and an unwanted visit from Mitaka.
MY NOTES:
Funny. Nothing great though.
THE MAN WHO REACHED FOR THE STARS:
Godai can't make it to the annual Ikkoku Christmas party due to a job redecorating. But when he sees Kyoko's face after she finds out, he quickly changes his mind to not go. So not only will he show up, but with the gift Kyoko's always wanted in a bag.
MY NOTES:
Pretty good. A nice joke at the end.
CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR:
Godai's left in charge of Ikkoku while Kyoko and everyone else is gone.
MY NOTES:
OK. Pretty funny (although the drinking contest between Kozue's dad and Godai is hilarious!).
THE KISSING SCENE:
Akemi comes home drunk one night, after being dumped by her boyfriend, and kisses Godai and Kyoko! Kyoko then dreams that night of kissing Godai, while Godai wonders about the kiss.
MY NOTES:
This is a good chapter, with one great joke. And expect a certain... SOMETHING, to happen...
NO PEEKING!:
Kyoko buys a leotard, while Yotsuya desires to reopen a certain `peephole.'
MY NOTES:
The first few pages might be boring, but the rest is great!
MIXED MESSAGES:
Kozue gives Yusaku pansies for Valentines Day that just might just mean more than what they appear to.
MY NOTES:
An OK chapter.
THE BETTER TO HEAR YOU WITH:
Rumors spread that Mitaka and Kozue are dating.
MY NOTES:
This chapter is funny enough, without the big plus of having my favorite Yotsuya line (so far)!
CLOTHES MAKE THE???:
Kyoko accidentally starts an Ikkoku Costume Party.
MY NOTES:
Funny.
JUST A LITTLE CARD:
A postcard in Soichiro's diary might cause confusion.
MY NOTES:
I think this would have made more sense if you could read everything Soichiro writes on the pages, and not have a little bit cut off.
This graphic novel will take a certain focus on comedy, with the exception of the fourth chapter.
Good Fun.......2001-11-12
No real major events in this volume of Maison Ikkoku, but of course it is still a wonderful read. The main events in this book are Godai recovering from a cold and the "care" that his fellow housemates spread upon him. Yes, as you can guess there will be alot of drinking. Even Mitaka fixes him some chicken soup. We also get to see a little adventure when Akemi comes home drunk and only kisses Godai, but Kyoko as well, hehe. My favorite chapter of the book has to be when the gang dresses up in different outfits and have a party. As already stated no new ground is really broken here, but it is fun to flip through these pages again and again.
A Strong Seal of Approval for "Good Housekeeping".......2001-06-27
"Good Housekeeping", Volume 4 of the international masterpiece of romantic comedy, "Maison Ikkoku", continues the great comedy and touching romance seen in the previous volumes. Although a uniquely Japanese story, the appeal of this timeless classic is universal.
Maison Ikkoku is a run down apartment building in Tokyo. Living there is struggling and wishy-washy college student Yusaku Godai, who has fallen head over heels in love with the beautiful, young manager of the building, Kyoko Otonashi. Kyoko has some feelings towards Godai, but she's a widow, and still is not over the death of her beloved husband, Soichiro.
Complicating matters between the two are rich, suave, hysterically dog-phobic, and handsome tennis coach Shun Mitaka, Godai's rival for Kyoko; and Kozue Nanao, a sweet, cute, and naive girl, who accidently has become Godai's platonic girlfriend. Kozue is clueless that Godai is in love with Kyoko.
But the crowning touch is the 3 other residents of the apartment building: hard drinking, hard partying and hard gossiping Mrs. Ichinose, who lives with her young son Kentaro; Akemi, a sexy party animal who is the bar hostess at local hangout ChaChaMaru, and who wears her see-through negligee around the building; and then there's the mysterious Yotsuya, who gets his kicks out of peeping, and breaking through Godai's wall so that he can mooch food from Godai. These characters would be at home in "A Confederacy of Dunces".
All 3 regard Godai as their personal toy, and they get their kicks from teasing him and holding their drinking parties in his room. They've also discovered that Kyoko is fun to tease as well.
With 9 chapters, Volume 4 picks up where Volume 3 ended: Godai is back home at Maison Ikkoku, but he's ill after the misadventures of the last volume. Too bad his nursemaids are Mrs. Ichinose, Akemi & Yotsuya. Christmas comes to Ikkoku once again. Godai's got his eye on the perfect present for Kyoko. Since this involves Godai & Kyoko, there has to be a string attached. New Year's results in two visits by Godai to the local shrine, first with Kyoko, then with Kozue. A drunken Akemi starts off a kissing chain reaction with Godai & Kyoko thinking about lips and the meeting thereof. Kyoko & Akemi buy leotards. Naturally, Yotsuya wants a peek. A trip home by Godai leaves Kyoko taking care of Godai's basket of flowers. Did anyone tell Kyoko that the flowers were a gift from Kozue? Speaking of Kozue, frustrated by Godai's lack of affection, she looks for some expert advice on the subject. The expert? Coach Mitaka! Welcome to misunderstanding city. Mrs. Ichinose's young son Kentaro has taken comfort that despite all the weirdos at Ikkoku, at least manager Kyoko's normal. This opinion might change after the results of an unplanned costume party, triggered by an innocent Kyoko. Finally, Kyoko's father-in-law gives Godai a package to give to Kyoko; Soichiro's diary. Can Kyoko get jealous of a dead man?
With no connecting story arc, this volume emphasizes humor and offers insights on both Japanese culture and the characters. The New Year's day chapter is especially rich in cultural references, showcasing the most important of Japanese holidays. Note that Kyoko & Kozue's kimono's have different length sleeves. Kyoko's sleeves are short, since she's been married. Kozue's sleeves are long, since she's stll young and single.
A good example of character insight is offered in this conversation between Kyoko & Mrs. Ichinose:
KYOKO: Do you think I'm the jealous type? MRS. ICHINOSE: You sure are. KYOKO: Couldn't you at least have hesitated a little? MRS. ICHINOSE: But it's true!
Better than "Oh! My Goddess!", with humor ranging from gentle to hysterical, this wonderful romantic comedy continues forward in "Good Housekeeping".
Great as always.......2001-05-29
Every Maison Ikkoku graphic novel ive read so far has been nothing short of 5 star... heck they should increase the ratings to 6 stars just for this book! Its definatley the best thus far, if your into subtle romance and the twists that go along with it!!
Finally, an anime series that could happen in real life.......2000-04-02
This was the first Maison Ikkoku book that I read, and this is the one that got me hooked on to the series. It is incredibly realistic and there is plenty of humor imbedded within the main storyline. The relationships of the characters are constantly shifting back and forth just like real life. That's not mentioning the great drawings and detailed plot lines. Or, just in two words -- it's great!

portrait of an artist.......2007-06-04
Daphne du Maurier was a consummate artist and Forster's excellent biography portrays her sympathetically, yet realistically. To begin to understand du Maurier one must understand that she considered fantasy more exciting than the real world. A child of privilege, Daphne grew up in a highly social and colorful artist's family, yet she greatly valued being alone. Her work was very lucrative, yet she spent much more money to help family and friends than on herself. Her writing is part of college curriculum and extremely popular. She was accepted into the Order of Knighthood for her contribution to the arts. Forster's apparently well-researched biography is written in a casual style, often humorous. Many people have something to say about Daphne and I found her own quotes the most interesting, yet, chameleon-like, she eludes the reader and remains mysterious.
