Beware the audio book verson.......2007-09-13

Be forewarned: the narrator of the audio book version is an unfortunate cross between J. Peterman from Seinfeld, Mike Wallace from 60 Minutes, and the narrator of old elementary school film strips. The content is very good (as described in other reviews posted here) but you should have a friendly warning about the audio version. The narrator will put you to sleep.

Short, Fast, and Informative.......2007-04-25

"The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" by David Quammen is a concise, fun, and fast read. If you want to learn the bullet points about Charles Darwin's life and the formative people, events, and intellectual and social climate that surrounded Darwin's publication of the On the Origin of Species, then this book is for you. Quammen does not spend too much time on any one point, but maintains a theme that Darwin was not lazy in publishing his famous book many years after his voyage but reluctant, wanting to make sure his ideas were sound and well evidenced.

An outline of Darwin's life can be found in many places, even Wikipedia, but what makes Quammen's book particularly helpful is the sections he devotes to writing about Darwin's contemporaries and their contributions to natural history and Darwin's work. Quammen writes about Charles Lyell and his advocacy of the idea of uniformitarianism, the idea that was formed by slow-moving processes, which opposed the idea of catastrophism, the idea that was consistent with Christian theology of the times and based on the belief that certain catastrophes shaped the geologic features of the earth as it is today. Quammen also writes about John-Baptiste Lamarck and his idea of the inheritance of acquired traits, an idea that has been found to be incorrect, but one that Darwin uses in his famous book. These sections in "The Reluctant Mr. Darwin" give historical and scientific context to Darwin's work and allow the reader to more completely appreciate the specific and significant contribution that Darwin made in advocating the idea of evolution by natural selection.

Another important aspect of Quammen's book was how Quammen made it a point to show the evolution of Darwin's famous publication from its infancy, where he first wrote his ideas in journals titled Journal A, Journal B, Journal C, and so on to his obsession with writing a tome that covered every possible argument and objection to his idea with as much evidence as possible to his final rushed publishing of On the Origin of Species due to the threat of Alfred Russel Wallace nearly publishing the same theory before Darwin himself.

This book definitely gives the reader a good picture of Darwin and the social and scientific climate in which he lived. I came away from the book having what I felt was a basic yet complete understanding of Darwin's life.

On the Evolution of Darwin.......2007-04-25

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a quick read on the life and works of Charles Darwin. David Quammen beautifully integrates excerpts from primary sources into this biography, really making the work a book, and not just a really long research paper. The sections are smartly headed and the writing style is engaging and makes the biography an easy and interesting read.

The biography itself provides an intimate portrait of Charles Darwin the son, husband, father, friend, etc., which also reveals much about his tendencies as a scientist. The author gives a good overview of all the theories regarding speciation that had already been discussed throughout the intellectual community before Darwin came up with his idea on the "transmutation" of species. It was particularly interesting when trying to imagine a society before the theory of evolution. My struggles to do so only further demonstrate how much Darwin has impacted our modern thinking. Quammen's summary on the ideas and examples provided in "The Origin of Species" may be interesting to many who do not wish to read the 500 pages or so of the actual book, but in my opinion, it was unnecessarily dry and seemed out of place in an otherwise interesting and engaging work.

However, one point that I particularly enjoyed was the fact that Quammen explored the evolution of Darwin's theory of evolution: from the beginnings of its fabrication in "notebook B" to its revealing to the public in the first edition of "Origins" to subsequent subtle changes in order to rectify problems brought up by opponents and finally to its modern applications in the field of molecular biology. The author definitely provided a persuading argument on the "fitness" of Darwin's great idea.

The Reluctant Mr. Darwin by David Quammen.......2007-03-31

This book is by far one of the best I have read on Darwin. David Quammen puts you inside the period in Enland as well as providing a great understanding of Darwins personal thinking and self doubt as he formulated his theories on evolution. This is an excellent book for anyone but especially a non-scientist such as myself.

This work focuses on the post Beagle period of Darwins life, and although I would have liked more included on Wallace, Lyell,and Huxley, Darwin was the deserving subject.
David Quammen is an excellent writer on science and scientists, and if you are starting with this work, you should check out his other works.

A really informative introduction to Darwin, his ideas, his works, and his impact on science and society. Young people will get a great deal out this volume and will find it perfect for writing reports or preparing for classroom discussions. On the other hand, adults unfamiliar with Darwin's ideas will benefit from the author's impressive job organizing and explaining some potentially difficult to understand material.

Dov Ospovat's book, originally published in 1981, has become generally accepted as one of the most influential books about Darwin published in recent years. Ospovat examines the period of 1838-1859, two decades preceding the publication of On the Origin of Species, in detail and shows that Darwin's views changed quite radically from initially believing that animals and plants were perfectly adapted to their environments, and that evolution only occurred when the environment changed, to believing that living things were not perfectly adapted, were in constant competition with each other, and hence were continually evolving. By placing Darwin within the other biological developments of the day, he is able to show that he was not the scientific recluse of popular myth. He also shows that there was a theological basis for much of Darwin's original 1838-1844 theory, and his later principle of divergence was influenced by his belief in evolutionary progress.

Best of the anita Blake books.......2007-10-01

If you see reviews for current antia blake books, you'll notice most people lament that the serries is not what it once was. this is the book many people are talking about. #5 in the serries it is the sort of adventure that inspired the devotion of readers.

Set in a St Louis that has vampires and werewolves and other nasties in it, Anita is the local execution for monsters that get out of control. Her day job, however, is an Animator who can raise the dead as a zombie. this is usually done for legal disputes or family squables -"Where did you put your will?" type stuff.

This book starts with Anita being called out to a construction site near Branson, Missouri where bulldozers on the site of a luxery hotel have exposed an unmarked grave yard. Anita is caleld in to see who the dead were to find out who really has the right to the land.

Sound simple, right? Of course it never stays that way. Add to the mix of corporate greed, a vampire on the prowl who doesn't respect human law, see's humans an interesting play things and who knew Anita's on again vampire boy friend and a local bar tender decended from faeries who wants everyone to stay the heck away from the property and things go down hill faster than life expectancy the guy who announces Barry Manilow will be the lead entertainer at a Hell's Angels convention.

The story wonderfully blends greed, horror, adventure and just a tiny bit of eroticism into a great read.

In Bloody Bones Anita heads out of town, to do a necromantic gig. She has young Larry, a fellow employee along for the ride, and is trying to teach him enough to stay alive.

She has to work out whether vampire serial killings are happening, and what the strange, deadly supernatural force is, and what to do about it, while dealing with yet another different bunch of supernaturals in fae types.

non stop reading.......2007-08-23

well i'm a little late to the game as far as the series goes. but i'll tell you one thing i just can't get enough. The anita blake series is now my 2nd addiction as far as buying and reading books. laurell k. hamilton's style of writing just cathes me from page one and it's so hard to stop or put the book down once i start. the witty conversations and comments made by the main character are great. i cant wait to read the rest of the series.

Bloody Good.......2007-08-19

Hamilton's writing matures throughout her Anita Blake series. This volume shows more depth than her others and her phrasing is smoother. The plot is not as tired--perhaps it is because Anita finds herself outside the city and Jean-Claude must go to her. In general, the whole book is tighter. Books 1-4 give readers the opportunity to pick up wherever they choose, and Book 5 is no exception. In fact, one might bypass some silliness by starting with Book 5. However, it would be a shame to miss out on all that sexual tension in the first four books!

Bloody Mary is the best children's horror book I have read in a long time. It ranks up there with the stories from when I was a child that kept me up nights. No murderous teenagers in black robes and hoods on hacking rampages with knives, just good old fashioned fright. Any kid will love it and will be telling the story for years to come around campfires and sleepovers, but they won't dare look in a mirror and say Bloody Mary thirteen times...

A Ghost Story With A Moral.......1999-10-08

The cover makes it look as though it should be a children's book, but it's a wonderfully funny, scary, heart-warming book that all ages will enjoy. The story of Amanda's quest to save her stepsister from the depths of an evil mirror and the monstrous Bloody Mary leaves your heart pounding, but makes you catch your breath in delight at the same time.
