Book Description

"Paddy"--the caricature of the heavy-drinking, hardbrawling Irishman born in Vaudeville acts and nativist cartoons-- remains, unfortunately, a vivid feature of the American national imagination. But as this stereotype fades into the past, what image does America have of the millions of Irish-Catholic immigrants who have played such a central role in our history?

In this remarkable collection of writings chronicling the author's exploration of his own past--and the lives of the hundreds of thousands of nameless immigrants that struggled alongside his own ancestors--Peter Quinn paints a brilliant new portrait of the Irish-American men and women whose culture and values now play such a central role in all of our identities as Americans. In Quinn's hands, "Paddy" gives way to an image of "Jimmy"--an archetypal Irish-American (a composite of Jimmy Cagney and Jimmy Walker) who comes to life as the fast-talking, tough-yet-refined urban American who redefined American politics, street culture, religion, and moral imagination. Addressing subjects ranging from the impact of decades of immigration on Western Ireland to the long legacy of Irish-American Archbishop John Hughes, Quinn's vibrant prose weaves together the story of a people that has made an immeasurable contribution to American history and culture.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone who wants to better understand America........2007-10-01

A big fan of Quinn's historical fiction novels "Banished Children of
Eve" and "Hour of the Cat," I knew I was in the hands of an expert
author and historian in "Looking for Jimmy." Quinn gets personal in
this collection of essays about the Irish in America. As he shares
stories of his family, I'm reminded of my own, or the lack thereof.
The older generations didn't speak much about Ireland or the trials
and harsh tales of their immigration and integration into the new
world. Quinn notes the silence and dearth of artifacts. The phrase
"Watch the quiet ones" comes to mind. May as well say, watch the
Irish ones. Thankfully, Quinn is not quiet. He watches them all,
researches, studies and considers, takes account and conveys the story
and motivation of a people across generations.

It's all too common for modern society to neglect its ancestry. The
melting pot warrants, yet makes it harder to figure identity. Quinn
bravely and enthusiastically explores one important and special
ingredient in that pot, the Irish. He takes us to the movies with
James Cagney, to the legendary story of hero Michael Corcoran, to many
places the Irish permeated and permeate. What it means to be
American, has a lot to do with what it means to be every other
culture. Quinn's "Looking For Jimmy" helps us find him and appreciate
the Irish element in the fabric of America. If we're lucky, there's a
little bit of Jimmy in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Getting the Irish Right.......2007-09-11

The great Irish labor leader and 1916 rebel James Connally once said,"It's easier to explain socialism to the Irish than to explain the Irish to the socialists." I've always found depictions of Irish Americans--even more that the Irish in Ireland--to be riddled with stereotypes, both favorable and unfavorable. Why, I've wondered, couldn't anybody "explain" Irish Americans to their fellow Americans--i.e., capture all the confouding complexity of this people in their long day's journey from famine and rural serfdom to the top of the New World? Maybe no one story can ever capture the whole journey, but for me "Looking for Jimmy" comes as close as anyone will ever manage. I was deeply moved by this book, and though, unlike the author, I no longer have any association with organized religion (I describe myself as a "disorganized Christian"),I found his observations on faith to be filled with truth. If you're not Irish American but want to find out about them, read this book. If you are Irish American and want to find out about yourself, do the same.

3 out of 5 stars Mining for Irish green.......2007-08-01

I bought this book because of the many positive reviews. The work is extremely long on opinion and very short on fact. How this sentimental and nostalgic bathos can sell without negative reviews appearing is beyond this Celt's understanding.

5 out of 5 stars No Plastic Paddy Here...........2007-03-12

This book answers the question once and for all; Are all the NY Irish dead and buried in Calvary Cemetary??? Not so.....Quinn's book riveted me from the first word written. So many of the reflections were identical to my own family and their experience in New York. The silence of our past, the quest for respectability, the fierce fidelity to the faith. I was torn between laughing and crying at the similarities.

Besides the magnificent analysis and brilliant prose, I appreciate Quinn's indebtedness to the parochial school system; I too am a product of a Christian Brothers high school, then Fordham (much to the dismay of my high school teachers, no Manhattan College in my future...my father had the Jesuits at Xavier and Georgetown)

If you are a New Yorker of Irish descent, this is a must read. Too few of my generation appreciate the sufferings and sacrifices of our ancestors; we have succeeded upon their shoulders. This book crystalizes that fact, and challenges us to keep faith with that past as we look to the future

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly Written.......2007-03-12

Peter Quinn is a master storyteller and with his prose he tries to keep alive the enduring and rich legacy of Irish-American contributions to the history and foundations of American life.

Book Description

Forced from her downtown Manhattan apartment by the terrorist attack of September 11, journalist Wendy Bounds was delivered to Guinan's doorstep -- a legendary Irish drinking hole and country store nestled along the banks of the Hudson River in the small town of Garrison, New York -- by a friend.

Captivated by the bar's charismatic but ailing owner and his charming, motley clientele, Bounds uprooted herself permanently and moved to tiny Garrison, the picturesque river town they all call home. There she became one of the rare female regulars at the old pub and was quickly swept up into its rhythm, heartbeat, and grand history -- as related by Jim Guinan himself, the stubborn high priest of this little chapel. Surrounded by a crew of endearing, delightfully colorful characters who were now her neighbors and friends, she slowly finds her own way home.

Beautifully written, deeply personal, and brilliantly insightful, Little Chapel on the River is a love story about a place -- and the people who bring it to life.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thank You.......2007-08-23

I couldn't think of a better title to my review, then to sum it up with my feelings after reading this book. THANK YOU Wendy for sharing your experiences at Guinan's with us. For introducing us to the wonderful cast of characters - human, animal, logistical. Your writing placed me right at a stool at the "chapel", or on a wind swept hill overlooking the Hudson. Thank you for forever memorializing this place and time and people. Grand job!

5 out of 5 stars Finding Home.......2007-08-23

Wow, I feel like I missed the boat (or the train as it may be) on this one. I see all the posts from back in 2005 and wondered why I hadn't seen this book before. Now in August of 2007 I just finished reading this book (for the second time). What a superb tale, timely, well written and very touching. I live not far from Garrison and feel compelled to stop in at Guinans and have a beer.

Thank you Wendy Bounds for telling this story. I am going to look for more tales from Ms. Bounds. Hope to see some soon.

Must read for any one looking for a great story.

3 out of 5 stars nice topic, but...a little boring.......2007-06-13

I like the "come find yourself in a small town" genre and I like the Guinan family the author writes about. I even love the Wall Street Journal, where she is a writer on staff. We lived in nearby New Jersey when the terrorist attacks happened and lost some friends and neighbors, so I've lived through a bit of what she went through. But...the book was missing something for me. Even though Gwendolyn Bounds writes in detail about the pub on Garrison's Landing and the family who runs it, I just didn't feel the connection to the characters--she wrote more matter of factly than from the heart. I understood that she cared deeply about them, but she didn't make me care. She did make me curious and maybe I'll go to Guinan's someday. Well, that's my take on it. I'd give the book 3.5 stars, and recommend the book with the aforementioned reservations.

4 out of 5 stars A Time to Heal.......2007-05-27

Bounds' work is a must read for anyone who was lost after 9/11. The journey is about finding yourself and sometimes the journey introduces you to the person you never knew-you. Her book explains a search that was happening in a lot of people after this tragic day. It made us question what was important. In NY, for a brief period of time, all men were equal. Join Bounds in her search for a place where we are all equal.

5 out of 5 stars Hoboken Book Lover.......2007-01-30

I just finished Little Chapel On The River and felt compelled to post a review! The book was warm and touching and extremely insightful. Having many familiar experiences, I found the voice of the author inviting and accessible and the perfect blend of sentiment and reality. Thank you for a wonderful read that I will reccomend highly to my fellow readers!

Book Description

From his childhood days in Mexico, to his experience of censorship in government–owned Mexican media companies, his student years in LA, and his early beginnings as a journalist in the USA, Ramos gives us a personal and touching account of his life.

With a series of intimate portraits of the leading political figures he has interviewed over the years (Castro, George W. Bush, Chavez, Clinton) and the places he has been, he reflects on world events and how they have changed, not only humanity, but his own life.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good Reading.......2004-09-16

This book reflects how an immigrant who works hard in the USA can succeed financially and professionally. Ramos has certainly proved that=--Congratulations. It is unfortunate that even though he has interviewed leaders of other countries and see how government in other countries hold back progress of their own people and yet Ramos hesitates to call USA his home. As he acknowledges Mexico made him and USA developed him...like a biological farther who has a child yet never nourishes or parents his child but the stepfather is really the "Father" because the step dad has cared, nourished the child. USA has been the step father for Ramos in many ways.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2003-09-11

I truly enjoyed reading this book, Univision was always on my mom's television set and Mr. Ramos is my mom's favorite journalist, she loves him, and now I see why. Thank you Jorge for sharing your incredible story.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Astonishing.......2003-01-18

This has to be one of the most astonishing and incredible memoirs of hispanics living in the United States. I loved Ramos's simplistic style, yet profound way of describing his thoughts. For those interested in journalism, this is a book to read.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely inspiring!.......2002-12-15

Having read The Other Face of America, I had to get my hands on Jorge Ramos's memoir. He has inspired me to pursue a career in journalism, which is why I have followed his career for years. In No Borders, Ramos gives the reader an inside look into the life of a young Hispanic male seeking the American Dream. He moved to the U.S. from Mexico at the age of twenty-five, with very little experience in the journalistic field. Twenty-years later, he is a seven-time Emmy Award winning anchorman for Univision. From his tale of how he became one of the most successful reporters to recaps of his biggest news assignments, No Borders is an inspiring memoir about a man who stopped at nothing to get to where he is today...

This short survey of the history of chemistry via the discovery of the elements is a real treasure from Asimov. It is a shame that these books are not in print. The book shows how the discovery of the elements was related to advancing technology and theory. Particulary good is the chapter on Mendeleev.

Book Description

When David Trimble claimed recently that Irish republicans needed house-training, I felt the echo of my master's voice down through the ages, that of the Vikings, the British, and the WASPs, and knew why I am Irish. Now and then someone has to defecate on the master's rug.

Tom Hayden first realized he was 'Irish on the inside' when he heard civil rights marchers in Northern Ireland singing 'We Shall Overcome' in 1969. Though his great-grandparents had been forced to emigrate to the US in the 1850s, Hayden's parents erased his Irish heritage in the quest for respectability. In this passionate book he explores the losses wrought by such conformism. Assimilation, he argues, has led to high rates of schizophrenia, depression, alcoholism and domestic violence within the Irish community. Today's Irish-Americans, Hayden contends, need to re-inhabit their history, to recognize that assimilation need not entail submission. By recognizing their links to others now experiencing the prejudice once directed at their ancestors, they can develop a sense of themselves that is both specific and inclusive: 'The survival of a distinct Irish soul is proof enough that Anglo culture will never fully satisfy our needs. We have a unique role in reshaping American society to empathize with the world's poor, for their story is the genuine story of the Irish.'

4 out of 5 stars Feisty Flag Waver Teaches Us Much About Ireland's Image .......2004-12-06

IRISH ON THE INSIDE is a fast-paced, entertaining and lucid look by long-time activist Tom Hayden at the history of the Irish immigrant image and the role of the Irish in American politics/business as well as an excellent survey of the seemingly unsolvable schism between Northern Ireland and the country of Ireland as a whole.

Hayden is somewhat of a fanatic in his style of writing and that only adds a tasty morsel of Irish to the flavor! He is out to challenge misconceptions of the Irish image (drunken, wild living, fighting, wife beating, lower class citizens) that is a welcome addition to the literature. Though the numerous famous writers, playwrights, and poets from Ireland have tended to play up the Irish wild side, Hayden looks at history and fact and seeks to prove that though the Irish have definite life ties to their mother country no matter where they emigrate, their contribution to global welfare is a positive.

Hayden spends a lot of this book giving us insight into the history of the longstanding political fighting in Northern Ireland and does so in a manner that is more illuminating than most essayists. But it is Hayden's feisty commitment to restructuring the worldview of the Irish people that is the most heartwarming and entertaining aspects to this bubbly book. A worthy read, this, no matter what your previous opinions of Tom Hayden's own political career might be!

5 out of 5 stars Great work of nonfiction.......2002-12-25

I just finished reading Dan Sheehan's novel Irish American Hero. I wanted to learn more about Northern Ireland and picked up a copy of Irish On the Inside. It is a great book and I'd suggest that people pair up the two books to get a real feel for what has been going on in Northern Ireland!

5 out of 5 stars The Politics of Northern Ireland Made Understandable.......2002-06-18

I read Hayden's book as I travelled through the northwest of Ireland, in the Republic and in Northern Ireland, and found great insight within. Hayden takes a tremendously complex political and social quagmire and illuminates without oversimplifying. The people who hate this book are likely people who simply dislike everything about the social movements of the 1960s in which Hayden was so deeply immersed. But for those who still believe in fighting for what is right, and care about Ireland, Irish On The Inside will be a refreshing read that will have an impact.

1 out of 5 stars Cultural String theory........2002-05-12

I come from the same people as the author and see things quite diferently. The book impressed me as a very windy and preachy screed of self-adulation and pseudointellectual posturing.Filled with nonsequitors, gushing kudoes to his liberal friends and the Kennedys, and all based on this laboriously contrived theory that
Irish-Americans possess cultural and personality traits that have their origin with the Potato Famine. There are a few.The dont tread on me attitude is one but then most people who have been oppressed(and that is most people)have the same trait.I admit to a certain bias. While Mr. Hayden was sleeping with Jane Fonda and getting arrested in Chicago in the 60s becoming somewhat of a political celebrity,I was starting a medical career on the southside of that city while raising 5 very young children.Nice try Tom but Robert Emmet your not.

5 out of 5 stars Hayden on Ireland.......2002-02-16

This is a particularly good time to read Tom Hayden's Irish on the Inside, due to the gathering conflict between America's role in the war against terrorism and the Irish perception of that role. The book deals with the exodus of Irish people from their homeland following the Famine in the mid-19th century, and the efforts of the newly arrived immigrants to adjust to American cultural attitudes which were frequently anti-Irish. The resulting desire to become immersed in the anglo protestant population led to increasing political conservatism and greater distance from the more radical viewpoints common among the native Irish. Hayden believes that there is a suppressed liberalism among Americans of Irish descent which should emerge at this point to form a bond with oppressed and disadvantaged people throughout the world, but especially in Ulster.

The first part of the book traces Hayden's family's journey from Ireland to Michigan, where he was raised in a parochial school surrounding prior to graduating from the University of Michigan. The author attributes his conversion to radical dissent during the `60's to that vein of revolutionary thought which characterized the Irish struggle against the British for centuries, culminating in the uprising of 1916 and the subsequent Irish Civil War. The second part describes the time of the troubles in Ulster and the fate of those who participated in the political and paramilitary efforts to free the northern counties. The history outlined here is factual and will explain much in terms of not only the violence of the Bloody Sunday era, but the sacrifice on both sides which led ultimately to the Good Friday agreement.

Finally Hayden looks to the future and discusses the question of retention of native identities in the face of onrushing globalism. Are populations like that of Ireland, small and insular, going to be absorbed in the whole as Europe eliminates borders and moves to a common currency? He argues convincingly for renewed efforts to preserve traditions and languages while working to make the international community a place where justice and understanding prevail. Key to that aim will be the resolution of human rights issues in the world at large. Hayden suggests that a vital first step in that process would be an admission by the United States and Britain that arms are not the solution to every problem, and that it is long past time to bring peace to Northern Ireland.

            Book Description

The archetypal myth of lost paradise, found in both civilized and primitive cultures throughout history, was central to Enlightenment and Romantic thought, influencing philosophical, literary, artistic, and musical works. This book explores manifestations of the lost paradise myth in Lieder by Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Hugo Wolf, and other nineteenth-century composers, with emphasis on works conveying nostalgia for classical antiquity, childhood, and folk song. Through a series of autonomous yet interrelated studies, Marjorie Hirsch examines the myth’s influence on the origins and development of the Romantic Lied. The book thus takes a thematic approach to the study of Romantic Lieder, with introductory sections supplying historical context for analyses of individual songs or small groups of songs expressing nostalgia for lost paradise in various guises.

              Book Description

Green Fire doesn't just pose the question of why are we here; it dares to answer it: humans are the thinking incarnation of nature. Along the way, the authors, two of Europe's most celebrated and original thinkers, freewheel through history, touching on the work of Charles Darwin, Rudyard Kipling, Francis Bacon, and even Baron von Munchausen to link the origin of life on Earth with the development of the human brain. In these pages, readers learn how Aristotle and Galileo disagreed, how Queen Christina's clock flummoxed Descartes, and how a jellyfish and an airplane share the same navigational system; you'll even learn the meaning of words like "karst" and "cnidarian." But mostly, readers of Green Fire will enjoy a masterful book that combines scientific rigor with an entertaining narrative to explore the evolution of life on Earth and humankind's place in it.

                  Book Description

Now thoroughly revised and up-dated, this volume describes techniques for handling and analyzing data obtained from high-energy and nuclear physics experiments. Beginning with a chapter on real-time data triggering and filtering, the book describes methods of selecting the relevant events from a large background. The use of pattern recognition techniques to group the huge number of measurements into physically meaningful objects such as particle tracks or showers is then examined and the track and vertex fitting methods necessary to extract the maximum amount of information from the available measurements are explained. The final chapter describes tools and methods useful for the physical interpretation and presentation of results.

                          Book Description

Would you buy a house without seeing the inside? Would you buy a car without checking under the hood and taking it for a spin? Probably not. Then why is it that you will choose a mate without knowing what's going on inside him? Most of you would agree that love letters are a great way into your heart. But though your man fills them with sweet words and promises, do you know what he's really saying between the lines? Stop looking at the words and check out how he writes. Hand-writing doesn't lie. Handwriting is brain writing; it is frozen body language. Finding Mr. Write gives you all the tools you need to uncover everything you should know about your man, no matter how well he thinks he's hidden it.

Does he print more often than not? If so, he is very direct and to the point. How he loops his letters, how much pressure he puts on the page, his strokes and his slants, how he dots his i's and crosses his t's, where he writes on the page--all of these will tell you more about what's going on inside him than his financial statement can. Finding Mr. Write is the compass that will aid you in your search for Mr. Right.

He says all the right things, but does he look good on paper?? That's the question I asked myself after reading "Mr. Write." How could I (how could anyone) resist the temptation to find out using the well-written, clear and insightful analyses provided by Ms. East. Intelligent, witty and sometimes disturbing, Ms. East shows us how cryptology reveals a person's personality through the simple act of writing a note and how anyone can can apply those theories. In addition, she provides easy to understand examples. So, if you're wondering if he's as good as he seems, or too good to be true. Is he kind, open, generous and straightforward or critical, controlling and deceitful? Find out for yourself. By the way, I did. Fortunately, I learned enough to to confirm what I already knew, which was, that while the gentleman in question may not be Mr. Right, he's perfectly suited for Mr. Right Now!! So I'm keeping pen and paper handy while my search continues.

Thoroughly enjoyed "Finding Mr. Wright" - Ms East's no nonsense approach to graphology made her book very easy to use and understand - sprinkled with good sound advice and excellent examples. THIS MUST READ BOOK - I have strongly recommended o both my male and female friends.

This book is quite unlike your typically self-help books. It provides the reader with a 'slant'on the intricacies of finding a mate. The best thing about the book is that the reader can use it to improve their own personal characteristics AND see if that significant other is really the one for you.

Although the art of graphology is quite new to me, I found the book quite interesting. Also this is an easy read for those of us with little to no time for leisure reading. You can choose the 'hour' of your choice for traits you find the most important in a relationship.

As far as validity of the science of graphology, I'm totally not bought on it yet. After I recieve my in-depth analysis from Ms. East then I'll make judgement. Until then, I think Ms. East succeeded in creating an interesting, thought provoking tool to use for understanding that special someone.

Wow, what a wonderful experience to read such a different type of book. Beverley is a wonderful and skilled writer who broke it down for me, a lay person, to understand. Even though I am married and have already found Mr. Write it was nice to have this book confirm some things about my husband and I. I really enjoyed reading it straight through, and will refer back to it many times. Can't wait to read more by Ms. East.
