Book Description
Max’s brothers have grand collections that everyone makes a big fuss over. Benjamin collects stamps and Karl collects coins, and neither one will share with their little brother. So Max decides to start a collection of his own. He’s going to collect words. He starts with small words that he cuts out of newspapers and magazines, but soon his collection has spilled out into the hall. All the while, his brothers are watching. Benjamin brags that he has one thousand stamps. Karl is just a few coins short of five hundred. But a thousand stamps is really just a bunch of stamps, and a lot of coins is only a heap of money. A pile of words, however, can make a story.
Bright, bold pictures incorporating clever wordplay accompany this highly original tale about a younger brother’s ingenuity.

Recipe to become a writer.......2007-09-10
I find Max's Words to be an excellent tool for children on how to learn the principles of the structure of a language. The power of this book is that the idea can be adapted to any language. That makes me think that any child using it frequently may become, if not a writer, at least, an avid reader.
Max's Words.......2007-08-12
I find this to be a delightful story of a little boy that is looking for something to 'collect' just like his older siblings. They have their coin and stamp collections which they refuse to share, so it's up to the youngster to go out and find something of his own. What better collection is there than words?! As a primary, elementary school teacher, I think Max is right on the money, and hopefully my students will think so, too, when I introduce Writer's Workshop to them with a read aloud of 'Max's Words'.
Great Book!.......2007-07-16
I love the idea of this book. It's a great way to get early reader's excited about words and even fun for an adult to read too! My son loves this book.
The Word is Mightier than the Reptile.......2007-07-04
Most adults buyers of kids' books are book lovers themselves. I can't help but believe that they hope their little ones will internalize their love fo words and reading. IT's a laudable goal, but not an easy one. Kates Banks, however, succeeds magnificently in this imaginative book that transforms the metaphorical power of words into something much more literal!
Banks and the very talented illustrator, Boris Kulikov, begin with three friends: Karl the coin enthusuiast, Benjamin the stamp collector, and Max--who can;t think of anything to collect. TO make matters worse, Neb and Karl refuse to share. Suddenly, and to the derision of his two friends, Max decides to colect words. IT's not cleat what spawns this choice, but x proceeds systematically; proceeds sustematically, never reading words bigger than he can digesy. With a little confidence, Max moves on to bigger and bigger words, and then to words he doesn;t even know! As he embellishes his vocabulary, Kulikov throws in some clever visual puns, depicting the words to reflect their meaning: THe written worf "Baseball" is in the shape of a bat, the "O" in the word "dogs" is a collar, "hungry" is written on paper that has a big bight in it! "Alligator" and "crocodile" are long words with spikey teeth along their edges, together they from the upper and lower jaws of something one might call a "crocogator."
THrough Max's testing of words and word order, Banks and Kulikov go beyond vocabulary to tackle the possibilities of syntax: word order can make a big difference! Max discovers (and we share this through the pictures), that "A Blue Crocodile Ate the Green Iguana," has a different meaning than "The Blue Iguana Ate the Green Crocodile," a difference particularly significant to the iguana and the Croc!
But, there's more! The increasing energy and scope of the words' power seems like it could have been inspired by a combination of the old Monsanto "Shrinking Person" ride at Disbeyland, the runaway power of "The Sorcerer's Apprectice," and the dream-becomes-nightmare of "Alice in Wonderland." Max discovers that with enough words he can write a stoty. Eventually, a story emerges about a young worm (looking, not coincidentally, something like MAx. As Karl and Bemjamin discover that the word can be mightier than the pen or the sword, they try to steal it ftom Maxye otiginal authot. (This is defintely a book that adults as well as kids ca nrelate to.) "Karl scrambled for more words. He wanted the crocodleto eat the womrn." FOrtunately, Max is quicker--the worm (and MAx alingwith it--narrowly escapes through a hole, signifying Max's newly won confidence and se;f-acceptance.
This is a great book for kids!.......2007-05-23
I really liked this book. As a teacher, I see lots of instructional posibilities in the classroom with this book. The pictures are great too!
Book Description

Book Description
Collector's Guide to Wallace Nutting Pictures contains the most complete and current Wallace Nutting price guide, featuring not only the rare, expensive prints, but also the many common popular images. Hundreds of photos aid in identification and special chapters are devoted to grading and rating prints, recognizing authentic Nutting signatures, collecting other memorabilia, as well as identifying fakes.2001 values. AUTHORBIO: Michael Ivankovich has been collecting hand-colored photography for over 25 years, especially David Davidson, Fred Thompson, and Sawyer. He is generally considered to be the country's leading authority on Wallace Nutting and Wallace Nutting-like pictures, as well as WallaceNutting books, furniture, and memorabilia. He is the author of Collector's Guide to Wallace Nutting Pictures, Early 20th Century American Prints, and Wallace Nutting Furniture. REVIEW: This book is devoted to Wallace Nutting, America's foremost photographer. Between 1900 and his death in 1941, he sold literally millions of hand-colored pictures. His work achieved such enormous popularity that hardly an American middle-class household was without one during the first quarter of the twentieth century. This book shows collectors what key characteristics to look for, what is common and what is rare, and what the difference is between a good, better, and best picture.
Customer Reviews:
Can pay for itself in your first online auction!.......2000-01-21
Wallace Nutting pictures are still (and temporarily) plentiful at all the online auction houses. This book will definitely protect you in the forest of sellers and allow you to wend you way through acquisitions without bumping your head or losing your wallet. Gives a good grounding in the world of buying and selling Wallace Nutting Photos. What sizes, what titles, what's there, how rare, how much, etc. Don't go to the auction without it! Very well done and very complete.

Chapters are arranged for quick consultation.......2004-12-09
Plenty of books provide advice on how to collect art and what to choose, but to few focus on display techniques appropriate for the home. The New Decorating With Pictures: Collecting Art And Photography And Displaying It In Your Home is the perfect item of choice for any who would collect art and photography and display it in a home, blending Simon Upton's fine color photo examples with Stephanie Hoppen's survey of techniques and common challenges. Divided by subject, chapters are arranged for quick consultation.

Book Description
They came from Japan -- those larger-than-life monsters that terrorized Tokyo and then stomped their way into America's households and hearts. The success of Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan has inspired action figures, dolls, plush toys, model kits, comic books, posters, and records. This thorough guide covers five decades' worth of collectibles based on these appealing monsters.
Customer Reviews:
DON'T PANIC...IT'S ONLY GODZILLA!.......2002-04-02
Dana Cain's book is an enjoyable, well written guide to an increasingly popular sub-category of monster toy collecting. No book on pricing collectibles is likely to remain current for long, and its real value lies in providing the reader with a pictorial overview of its subject. COLLECTING JAPANESE MOVIE MONSTERS succeeds very well in this, and its text provides some lively historical background into that singularly odd period in cinema where colossal creatures used Tokyo as a ring and we watched guilt-free. Note to "serious" Japanese movie monster collectors: don't take it all so seriously. Those responsible for the men in the monster suits didn't.
A good book with info not found elsewhere.......1999-07-26
While not perfect, this book is better than the earlier reviews said. The book is very well illustrated, and most of the pictures are very clear and sharp. To say that the pictures come mainly from a Toys-R-Us is simply false: The vast majority of the toys pictured are items not even distributed in the U.S., to say nothing of the movie posters, magazines, etc.
Any price guide is eventually going to be out of date. Many of the prices in this book are still current, although there are several that are not. I did find a couple of errors, where a picture was incorrectly labeled. To be fair, Sean Linkenback's book has similar errors and in many examples his prices are more dated than Ms. Cain's, plus her book includes items not even listed in his.
Yes, Linkenback's book is more in-depth, but it has its flaws too. As with other kinds of price guides, thinking of a single edition as being all encompassing or definitive is a mistake.
Bad........1999-01-30
This is not the first price guide on these toys. Sean Linkenback's was the first and much better than this.... Ms./Mr. Cain should research the subject before saying what prices are. Linkenback is a respected dealer of Japanese toys and thus infitely more qualified for an endeavor such as this. Cain, you should take a research class.
Not as good as other books on the subject.......1999-01-09
I was really looking forward to this book, and unfortunately con not find much to recommend about it. The listings are woefully incomplete and many times inaccurate. Photography is only so-so, and is mainly filled with items from the local Toys-R-Us. A better book to get would be "The Unauthorized Guide to Godzilla Collectibles". The one bright spot is the 14 pages on Gamera, which while could be better is finally altogether under one cover.
Book Description
The essential reference guide for glass collectors and devotees of the fluorescent art glass known as Vaseline is now in its second edition! Text and color pictures of over 690 different pieces show over 60 patterns and discuss of the history of this unique style and how to know it from look-alike pretenders. Ms. Davis brings together information that is expert, concise, informative, and clear. The photos are beautiful and instructive.
Customer Reviews:
Very well done. .......2006-02-20
This book is great for all the people who have Vaseline glass and are not sure the value. The pictures are the best quality I've ever seen. Very good book for people who are thinking of collecting this type of glassware.
Customer Reviews:
A beautiful book about an undervalued area of collecting........2007-08-01
The Art of the Garden... introduces the beginning enthusiast to the wonderful world of antique flower prints and is an essential addition to the library of the established collector of botanical art.
The gorgeously illustrated book documents the magnificent flower prints produced by notable artists of the 17th through the turn of the 20th centuries. These celebrated artists include Basil Besler, Maria Sybilla Merian, Mark Catesby, Georg Ehert, George Brookshaw, Robert John Thornton, Pierre Joseph Redoutè, and many others.
Illustrated with over 300 full-color images of original and valuable botanical prints, this book fills a void in the literature, as few good botanical references remain in print.
The text recounts the fascinating lives and passions of the artists and their patrons, the technical advances in printmaking, and the discoveries and cultural influences that shaped the depiction of flowers, plants, and trees. Also discussed are many variables affecting the values of original antique botanical prints including condition, rarity, historical significance, and aesthetic appeal. A range of prices is included to guide you in your collecting and a section on framing, displaying, and proper storage makes this an indispensable reference. A fascinating book for collectors of botanical prints, gardeners, and those interested in the history of flowers.
Beautiful Prints.......2007-06-10
Some of the most beautiful AND important antique flower prints are reproduced in full color in this book. I was amazed at the amount of knowledge and history detailed so elegantly. The authors include even more artist information on their site. Fineantiqueprintsdotcom has striking images and examples. This book is an excellent reference.
Fabulous.......2007-01-06
This book is well written. Straight forward, informative and intersting. The reproductions of the botanical prints are stunning. The book is super reference for both the novice as well as the more experienced collector. A joy to read.

Absoulute must have reference for Chinese Art Collectors.......2001-12-09
I've been collecting Chinese art for thirty five years and have almost everything published about Chinese Jade and related arts. Bernstein's book is concise, to the point and he gives straight talk about collecting Chinese art. Collecting Chinese art is a must have reference tool for all collectors of Oriental art. The author, an internationally famous scholar-dealer really knows his tomatoes. He writes about detecting fakes, scientific testing of Chinese works of art and the current world-wide market for Chinese art. The full color photographs of jades, ancient glass, gold and silver objects and stone scultures are attractive and tastefully done. I recommend it with out reservation.

A great book for learning, using, and just enjoying.......1998-09-17
I loved finding out about "the secrets of the trade" and how food and design come together. I recommend this for cooks, photographers, and anyone interested in design, lighting, or presentation. It is also just plain fun to look at the great photograhy and read about why your Christmas dinner will never quite look like the one in the magazine.

Book Description
Sustainable communities depend on ethical people. This book explains how multi-modal systems thinking can be applied to ethical and normative issues of community life. It also provides a practical way forward by using the methodology and SmCube software for social systems analysis and design. These are presented in an extensive case study of life in Rosvik, a village in northern Sweden, where a group of villagers struggle to sustain their village against the loss of people and economic resources to large industrial centres of the south. The book examines the predicament which villagers are struggling with and provides a design of activities to revitalise the village, challenge its leadership and retain the next generation. Ethics and Sustainable Community Design will be of interest to managers, community activists, social workers and anyone interested in a new scientific tool that preserves the humanity of community life against mechanisation and an industrialised world view.
