Description:
Attenuated total internal reflection (ATR) spectroscopy with an s- or p-polarized visible light was examined for some species of protonated 5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphine (tpp) at toluene/aqueous H"2SO"4 (3-6moldm^-^3) interface. Tpp initially dissolved in the toluene phase was diprotonated at the interface to form monomeric H"2tpp^2^+, the absorption peak of which was 438nm. At the same time, a long H"2tpp^2^+ oligomer was formed, the absorption peak of which was 448nm. The two interfacial species were transient. Just after their disappearance, a rod-shaped H"2tpp^2^+ associate was formed at the interface, the absorption peak of which was 417 and 478nm. The former and latter wavelengths corresponded to H- and J-bands of the associate, respectively. Theoretical calculation of the strength of electric field of light at the interface allowed one to estimate the interfacial concentration of the three species with measured reflection absorbance (A"R). The monomeric H"2tpp^2^+ and its oligomer were at sub-monolayer levels, whereas the associate was at a multilayer level. Reflection absorption anisotropy (K"R), which was calculated from A"R with the s- and p-polarized lights, was adopted for the evaluation of out-of-plane orientation of the interfacial species for the first time. The K"R value suggested that the rod-shaped associate lay at the interface.

Several weeks ago, I picked up a Harry Bosch novel in a local book store. Since then I have ordered 12 other of the series from Amazon. I only have three left to read. Each novel stands alone, but if you read the series in order, it's a lot more fun. Great detectuve stories by a very readable author.

After reading the "Dark Tower" series, twice, I was looking for another series for my reading time. I never had read any kind of mystery/crime/police type novels before. I kind of feel like I started with the best which is kind of depressing, I will always compare anything else in this genre to Harry Bosch!

I love Harry! Yea he has an attitude, and you would too if you were lugging the steamer trunk of baggae he does.

This book is essentially 4-6 of the Harry Bosch run. Worth the time and money!

As I write this I have only read book #1, The Last Coyote and I enjoyed it thoroughly. It is probably best, I think, to read the Bosch novels in sequence; then you may appreciate better the developing plots which sometimes refer back to previous events. But each novel can, of course, be enjoyed on its own.

This novel was one of the worst, most predictable, pieces of filth that I have ever had the displeasure of reading. From the begginning you knew who the killers were, and Harry Bosch is a charachter that could easily be erased.

It was a page turner. What I like about Michael Connelly books are that they grab me. I read about fifty pages and then can't put them down. This was another in a great series of books and the ending still surprised me. Good stuff!

Pure magic.......2007-04-05

Along with The Poet, I consider Trunk Music to be Michael Connelly's best. The plot has so many surprising twists that even after you think you have it all figured out--you don't. I despise predictability in a novel and Michael's books are never predictable. With the Harry Bosch novels it isn't so much WHO did it as HOW and WHY delivered to you with breathtaking suspense and pulse pounding thrills.

I marvel at how Michael Connelly weaves together such inconsequential items as an uncashed gambling ticket, and a matchbook to reveal larger truths to Harry Bosch and to you, his readers, without spoiling the outcome. Nobody or no thing throws Harry Bosch off the scent for long.

Trunk Music is pure magic and if this review helps put you on the path of millions of others who love Michael's books then I've done you a favor.

Excellent, a bit different for Connelly.......2007-01-10

I truly like Michael Connelly's writing, but I always approach it with a bit of trepidation. Connelly has a way of sucking you in and sometimes the world he creates is really, really creepy. "The Poet" and "Concrete Blonde" are examples of books that drew me in and showed me more of the mind and the acts of the criminally disturbed than I can casually consume.

So, I have a couple Connelly books held back in reserve. Every once in a while I take a deep breath and dive in.

Surpise! This one was not nearly as dark. Don't get me wrong, it's full of murder, betrayal, fights, adultery and so on. But, no one is criminally insane.

Connelly has got himself a fine bit of old-fashioned detective writing based in a LAPD that is suffering from post-OJ trial traumatic stress disorder. Bosch has a new boss, new partners and a fresh start. He also risks it all in order to do what he believes is right. That's why we love him.

Good detective writing throughout causes me to give this one a grade of "A".

A Must-Have for Stereolab and Broadcast Fans.......2006-06-04

This is quite a great book. I haven't been able to find a book dedicated to the "mood music" from the 60's, and this book fills the void! The CD that comes with the book is also excellent. If you are a Stereolab and/or Broadcast fan, you won't be disappointed, as a lot of the album designs for the two bands reference to these great record covers. Also, this book shows you a link between the past and present-day music that is influenced directy by the library music.

Designed for mass consumption, library records often featured pastiches of the popular styles of the day. This resulted in bitter-drinking, suit-wearing pianists with a family to support making far-out psychedelic rock and big band jazzers laying down avant-garde electronic futurism.
As is often the case with pastiche, the library records ended up being far weirder and, paradoxically, more creative and original than the styles they were copying. With an invisable audience and none of the usual pressures like reviews and sales to worry about, top session men like Alan Hawkshaw, jazz-classical pioneer Basil Kirchin, and a pre-Led Zepplin Jimmy Page could let rip with music for a chase scene - usually under a pseudonym - before heading off to the pub for lunch.
As CDs took over from vinyl in the eighties music libraries cleared out their old stock, releasing them onto the private collectors' market and revealing a fact previously unknown to all bar a few musicians: these albums had fantastic covers.
With no famous names to go on a striking images was the only way of catching the attention of potential clients, hence such classics as `Musique Idiote' by Roger Roger and `Feelings' by Italian easy jazz maestro Stefano Terrosi.
`Ah yes, `Feelings'... good hip hop break on that one. Goes for £1,000 on eBay,' reflects Jonny Trunk, a hopeless library addict who has collaborated with the London design agency Fuel to produce `The Music Library', a collection of 325 of the greatest album covers never seen. `There's a big collecting cult around library records now. Some of it is simply down to it's rarity, but the beautiful covers and strangeness of the music has a lot to do with it too.'
Founder member of the Specials Jerry Dammers puts it's appeal down to the way it `seems to get every musical genre just wrong enough to make it sound twisted and different - ie, great.' Record library albums are pure pop art - and best of all, they're free from any pop stars that might let you down.
