Book Description
Quantitative genetics—the statistical study of the inheritance of traits within a population—has become an important tool for studying the evolution of behavior in the last decade. Quantitative Genetic Studies of Behavioral Evolution examines the theory and methods of quantitative genetics and presents case studies that illustrate the many ways in which the methods can be applied.
Christine R. B. Boake brings together current theoretical and empirical studies to show how quantitative genetics can illuminate topics as diverse as sexual selection, migration, sociality, and aggressive behavior. Nearly half of the chapters focus on conceptual issues, ranging from quantitative genetic models to the complementary roles of quantitative genetic and optimality approaches in evolutionary studies. Other chapters illustrate how to use the techniques by providing surveys of research fields, such as the evolution of mating behavior, sexual selection, migration, and size-dependent behavioral variation. The balance of the volume offers case studies of territoriality in fruit flies, cannibalism in flour beetles, mate-attractive traits in crickets, locomotor behavior and physiology in the garter snake, and cold adaptation in the house mouse. Taken together, these studies document both the benefits and pitfalls of quantitative genetics.
This book shows the advanced student and scholar of behavioral evolution and genetics the many powerful uses of quantitative genetics in behavioral research.

Book Description
The lectures and seminars recorded in Amorphous Insulators and Semiconductors fill the gap between graduate courses and research seminars. The book is organized into four sections, starting with general considerations of glass forming ability and techniques for the preparation of different kinds of glasses. There has been activity on the nature of the glass transition in recent years, but it remains a difficult and poorly understood subject. The second section discusses the various techniques used to investigate the structure of the glasses, including extensive notes on computer simulation techniques. The third section goes into vibrational states, with special emphasis on the interaction between theory and experiment. In the final section the electronic structure of the glasses is reviewed, together with its relationship with their electrical properties, which involves an understanding of defects. Also included in this section is a review of current thinking on tunnelling states in glasses.

Book Description
Amorphous Silicon Kazunobu Tanaka National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research, Ibaraki, Japan Eiichi Maruyama Hitachi Ltd, Ibaraki, Japan Toshikazu Shimada Hitachi Ltd, Ibaraki, Japan Hiroaki Okamoto Osaka University, Osaka, Japan Translated by Takeshi Sato, National Institute for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research, Ibaraki, Japan Amorphous silicon has substantially different properties as compared to crystalline silicon. It has therefore become recognized as a fascinating and important material in its own right, with many interesting facets that lead to a range of novel and still developing applications. Amorphous Silicon introduces the reader to this field by first discussing what is meant by the amorphous state. It details the way in which amorphous silicon is prepared, and the growth mechanism. The main structural, optical and electronic properties are then covered in detail, and there is a full chapter on the structural stability of the material, including photoinduced effects. Finally, a number of the most exciting applications of amorphous silicon are presented, including its use in solar cells, photo-sensors and liquid crystal displays. Amorphous Silicon will be of great interest to all those working in solid state physics or chemistry, materials science and electronic engineering, from postgraduate students to more experienced workers in these fields.
Customer Reviews:
Huge Potential.......2004-01-23
Why is amorphous silicon important? This book explains its significance in a variety of contexts. To the researcher interested in pure science, its properties are sufficiently different from crystalline or polycrystalline silicon to offer nontrivial studies.
But the greatest potential for amorphous silicon is in vast pervasive applications. Firstly, silicon is very common in the earth's crust, so applications that can make use of it can benefit from this. But, as the book makes clear, it is the expense of making pure crystalline silicon that has driven a lot of the research into amorphous silicon. Crystalline silicon is the base material in most semiconductor fabs. (The only major exception are the fabs that use GaAs. But those are for niche applications.) Amorphous silicon can be made by inherently cheaper means, like sputtering, and under far less stringent particulate contamination limits.
This motivates the book's discussion on the use of amorphous silicon in various contexts, like for solar cells. If the efficiency could be pushed sufficiently high, without a concomitant increase in the cost of manufacturing, then this could be a huge commercial field.
Interesting and challenging readings.

From Back Cover.......2006-08-14
Kimberly Hayward was a stickler for the details in her action-adventure script. She'd checked out every heist -- and murder! -- for authenticity. Now she had to inject some more sizzle into the love scenes. Who better to help with some "hands-on" research than the mysterious but sexy Jason Parker?
Field agent Jason had never tackled an assignment like this -- tail a gorgeous blonde who seemed to be up to something suspicious. And he was certain the case didn't involve indulging in sexual fantasies with Kimberly, but who could resist? She seduced him one night -- and even took notes, strangely enough!
No question, their unfolding relationship was hot, explosive...obsessive. But what happened next wasn't even in the script...
[4th in the Heros, Inc series; sequel to Bordering on Obsession.]
I need a HERO!!.......2004-06-12
This is the sequel to Susan Kearney's Bordering On Obession. Do you remember the spunky assistant to Quinn in Bordering On Obession? This book marks the return of Kimberly. Kimberly is in Europe looking to add in the sex scenes for her movie script and Jason Parker is there to give a "helping" hand (literally ;)
I don't want to give away the story...but if you like adventure mixed with a little spice and romance then this book is for you.
