"Cholesterol" is one of the most confusing words in the health world. Most people assume that because excess cholesterol in your blood is a bad thing, cholesterol in your diet must be dangerous, too. But, as Ronald Citron points out, the two things are unrelated. Excess cholesterol in your bloodstream comes from too much saturated fat in your diet. Eating high-cholesterol food such as shellfish and game meats is extremely healthy; they're generally low in fat and, more important, are extremely low in saturated fat. That's the "evolutionary" part of Citron's plan: if you eat the way our hunter-gatherer Cro-Magnon ancestors ate, you'll avoid health problems because you'll be eating the foods our bodies evolved to consume. More than half of the book consists of recipes and menu plans for putting Citron's theories into practice.

        Book Description

Renowned cancer specialist Ronald Citron, M.D. uses his medical knowledge, as well as his wife Kathye's expertise as a chef, in this anti-cancer, anti-heart disease diet book.

2 out of 5 stars Hunter Gathers Ate No Grains, Cro-Magnons not our ancestors.......1999-03-19

My review title tells it. You're a great cook, but next time, PLEASE do your homework before writing a book. Grains were not part of our diet until 10K years ago. The next person who writes something about how our ancestors ate whole grains for the 2.6 million period of human history should have their laptop taken away from them! Stick to cooking!

5 out of 5 stars A philosophy that makes sense. Great recipes........1998-07-13

This book makes sense. The premise is that our bodies evolved to eat food that could be hunted and gathered. That means fruit, vegetables, nuts, some whole grains, and some meat. (If we could catch it, we could eat it.) The no-nonsense message is that a diet that includes a range of whole foods (we didn't evolve to eat Cheetos and Whoppers!) can taste great and keep you healthy.

The recipes are really tasty. Some are exotic. Some take only ten minutes. There's enough variety, spice, and substance to keep me satisfied.

I read The Zone and realized that it was fundamentally a low-calorie diet -- of course you'll lose weight, but I can't believe it's healthy. If you really follow it you don't eat enough! I tried McDougall's plan and found his recipes bland and tired after a while. I liked Ornish's recipes but found myself craving tuna salad sandwiches and eating way too much dairy. Citron's book is balanced and less restrictive than Ornish or McDougall, and it makes complete sense from a scientific standpoint. Thumbs up!

1 out of 5 stars Same Old Stuff.......1998-02-27

The promise of the book is that it is a novel approace to diet based on the diet of our Cro-Magnon ancestors. Unfortunately, the author ignores much of the evidence from the paleontological record and picks and chooses whatever supports the standard low-fat noncense (the author is in a panic about saturated fats). While I will give him credit for incorporating wild game and other "flesh foods" into his program, he also includes foods that Cro-Magnon people rarely, if ever, consumed (such as dairy products and grains). He also includes sugar in many of his recipes. For a really compelling understanding of food as it relates to evolutionary theory, I suggest reading Peter D'Amamo's book "Eat Right For Your Type". Also, the Paleolithic Diet Page on the web has great articles and information.

An excellent book! I use the hilarious comic drawings (OK, and a few of the jokes which I shamelessly don't reference!) in human evolution courses I teach for CSU. I have also fed a few of the recipes to my family and think I want to go on a dig with these guys. They have to be the best fed crew in the world. I recommend this book to anyone either casually or seriously interested in human evolution, as well as anyone who just likes to eat good food. Buy it!!!

Wow! This book is a double-whammy success! Not only is the running dialogue on our current knowledge of human evolution and prehistoric material culture right on spot and highly entertaining (it could easily serve as an outline for a university course on the subject), this book is also chalk-a-block full of yummy recipes! I hope there is a sequel in the works!

The author of East Is East replays the tragi-comic meeting of representatives from two different cultures with nothing in common. This book calmly grabs hold with an unexpected suspense.

          Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Unrelieved Misery .......2007-09-11

This book contains the most unrelieved sequence of misery since the Book Of Job or the agony of Prometheus stretched out on a rock and having a vulture peck at his liver every day. In fact, it is SO catastrophic that IT IS UNBELIEVEABLE. So, also, was the ability of the hero, Candido, to suffer all these misfortunes without a serious attempt at rebellion much earlier in the story. How could he allow his wife to suffer such agony without going completely mad?

While the writing is generally good (not excellent) and has a few very sensitively handled scenes, for the most part these do not make up for the exaggerated plot.

The naming of the "heroine" as America, was an undisguised jab at the US. The emphasis on the Spanish names of the towns, streets, and developments is also a play on the cynicism of the real estate developers who take advantage of the immigrants while adopting their Mexican "culture."

Probably the most realistic character was Kyra, the anti-hero's wife and a real estate agent. For the most part, she knew what she wanted an she went for it!

The last few chapters seem as though the author had gotten tired of the story and needed to draw it to a close.

This sort of ending was better written by Rudyard Kipling in his poem "Gunga Din."

"Though I've belted you and flayed you,
By the livin' Gawd that made you,
You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din."

          1 out of 5 stars just depressing..........2007-08-24

There are certain books that are depressing in a powerful way, in a way that's thought-provoking and interesting. I found this to be just a collection of every depressing thing that could happen to both illegal immigrants and middle-class residents of Southern California as a result of illegal immigration. I felt no sympathy for either couple after reading this book, and it seemed like the author was trying to hard to make it sound well written.

1 out of 5 stars Oh my, how awful...........2007-08-08

What an awful cast of shallow, unsympathetic and stereotyped characters (and caricatures). It's lucky that they're such awful people, however, because if you cared about them, you'd be overcome by the torrent of serial misfortune that befalls them (spoiler alert): Let see: Three brutal rapes, including the brutal rape/murder of a teenage girl, man hit by car, two beloved dogs eaten by coyotes, multiple cats eaten by humans, forest fire, floods, brutal mugging, child molestation, baby born blind (due to STD transmitted in previous brutal rape...), baby dies...I'm sure I've missed something...and this is all in the course of a few months....All culminating in an ending that leaves you shaking your head....Perhaps the author ran out of calamities.

3 out of 5 stars Ah, the writing..........2007-08-08

Boyle knocks out a great read that [...] me into the storyline - pronto. But his ending is lacking in depth and it is only within the fnal page or two that he attempts to reward his readers for their efforts. Hard to knock this guy and his writing abilities, but he's got Steven King-itis since his endings are sometimes (but not always) lacking. This puts me in the odd situation of saying that I'd probably not recommend this title to a friend, but I'd be willing to tackle his next book when it hits the shelves.

4 out of 5 stars 2 worlds in one place.......2007-07-17

I really thought the ethics and morals of this book are understanding. The bias that exist in society are seen on the pages of this book. An Anglo-American family and a Mexican family are destined to meet in a small city of California. They keep running into eachother throughout the book as the story twists and turns. I think this book is a good read!

4 out of 5 stars Reasonably Good Treatment of an Interesting Subject.......2003-02-28

There is no question that author Thomas Torrans is an intelligent writer very well-versed in his subject matter. I enjoyed and learned a lot from numerous parts of the book, especially the role of Spain in the early colonial days of Mexico, and the 'filibustering' invasions by various American groups, into northern Mexico. The reader stands to gain a good understanding of the ways in which Spain and the US pursued their own interests in Mexico, often with little or no regard for the Mexican people.

Torrans provides a very vivid picture of life and circumstances, both in the past and currently, of west Texas, the Big Bend, and the border towns that sit astride the Rio Grande. I credit Torrans for educating me on the origins of the ultimately huge and influential cattle industry in Texas, and the interplay between cowboys, cattle rustlers, and native Americans.

I also found Torrans' treatment of the role of the Colorado River as an economic, social and political entity, to be enlightening.

From content to style: the flow of the book was sound until the second last chapter, "Politics and profits of the 'War on Drugs'"; this topic, while an interesting one, and one handled quite knowledgeably by the author, seemed to have only tangential connections to the main theme of the book.

I found the author's writing style at times awkward and, thus, hard to follow. I was not accustomed to his sentence structures; if I were to edit the book, I would insert literally hundreds of additional commas, to make sentences (I would respectfully suggest) more readable and understandable. Notwithstanding these comments, I am glad that I bought and read the book and, for persons interested in Mexican-American relations and history, I recommend the book favorably, although perhaps not exuberantly...

5 out of 5 stars Attention Texas School Librarians.......2002-05-19

            ATTENTION ALL LIBRARIANS:

"Forging the Tortilla Curtain" provides the historical evolution of the Mexican American borderland with cultural insights. The facts of the narrative are interwoven with the day to day lives of those who participated in its history. It is fundamental that history is fluid and not fixed. It changes and develops reflecting the changes and developments in its society and culture. The history of the borderland and its people was necessarily a reaction to and a reinforcement of the desires and culture of its people and to its inherent lawlessness.

Mr. Torrans incorporates the dramatic transformation of both the borderland's history and its personalities that have dominated the "no man's land." The rugged individualism of both the honest and dishonest, of banditos and politicians, is portrayed. Certainly, the notion of survival of the fittest dominated is portrayed in word and photograph. The complex interdependence between the two countries is portrayed in references to personalities as varied as Billy the Kid and the machismo of the 1940's zoot suiters. And as these personalities are aligned it becomes apparent that some of these individuals may have been interchanged, but for the time. The opportunities for individuals to have power over others as well as to cause injury to each other in a lawless land is more evident in an historical narrative which includes the individuals of the land.

This book is strongly recommended for high school libraries. As our complex and diverse society develops so does the duty of the librarian to understand our varied cultures that we serve particularly as they affect the library's activities and service. This book will appeal to male high school students interested in a more rugged time and it will serve the Hispanic population in an attempt to bridge the cultures between Mexico and the United States. This is where the rubber hit the road so to speak. This is the heart of the cultural bridge both literally and figuratively.

In Texas our students are required to take several years of Texas history. As librarians once we provide the standard fare on the State Bird, the State Flower, the State Motto, Santa Anna, and the Six Flags of Texas our resources begin to dwindle. Not only is our history inextricably intertwined with that of our southern neighbor, our history is becoming their history. This book begins to fill that void.

The historical and projected facts of the US Census Bureau are as follow: in 2000, the US. Census reported that there were 35.3 million Hispanics of 12.5% of the US population, 22.4 million in 1990 and 14. 5 million in 1980. The Hispanic population is expected to contribute 35 percent of the nation's population growth from 1995 to 2000, 44 percent from 2000 to 2020, and 62 percent from 2020 to 2050. By the middle of the next century, the nation's Hispanic population is expected to reach 96.5 million (24.5 percent of the total population). The nation's Hispanic population is young, with about half under 26.5 years old on June 1, 1997. By comparison, non-Hispanic Whites were more than a decade older, with a median age of 37.3 years.

The important point for K-12 educators is about two-thirds of Hispanic families include children. Families with children had an average of 2.2 children and more than a quarter (29 percent) of these families had three or more children. It is essential that our libraries and our courses in Texas history include Mexican Heritage Resources.

This is a book we can recommend to high school students. It is a book that can be read as books within books. Each chapter can stand alone as a window into history or certainly can be read in its entirety. It will serve the library well for many generations. It serves an important purpose in building an Hispanic cultural collection. Now if Mr. Torrans would only produce an elementary school version our lives as librarians could become even more simple!

            Book Description

            The unimaginable has already begun.

Tales from the Tortilla Curtain: There are projects under way even today that may result in a great wall between the United States and Mexico. In this day and age of fear and suspicion, we can only wonder if the tales presented in this book will someday come to pass. Someday soon.

A Traves Del Tiempo: Across Time is a collection of short stories that presupposes time travel is possible. This time, however, we have two Latinos behind the wheel.

Haste el Behave o te Espanqueo! takes a more humorous look at the Hispanic experience. Here, as always, we see the constant balance between two cultures, two languages, and multiple identities.

5 out of 5 stars Era tiempo Rolando........2007-06-16

Horale, muchas congrats on finally completing your first book. After reading the stories, I find them humorous, thought provoking from a story teller from the future. As the author of West Texas stories such as "Lost in West Texas" and "El Midnighter", it is good to see Mexican Americans from different parts of Texas start to put a pen to their stories. If you want to experience the mind of Rolando Diaz as he takes you on a futurist trip of of his take on Hispanic issues today. I would strongly recommend you give Rolando's book a read. Adelante raza.

Topanga Canyon is home to two couples on a collision course. Los Angeles liberals Delaney and Kyra Mossbacker lead an ordered sushi-and-recycling existence in a newly gated hilltop community: he is a sensitive nature writer, she an obsessive realtor. Mexican illegals Candido and America Rincon desperately cling to their vision of the American Dream as they fight off starvation in a makeshift camp deep in the ravine. These four and their opposing worlds gradually intersect in what becomes a tragicomedy of error and misunderstanding.
