Genetic Investigations for the Laboratory
Deborah C Clark , Rebecca L. Seipelt , Philip M Mathis , and Philip Mathis Manufacturer: McGraw-Hill Primis Custom Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0072851511 |
Book Description
Genetic Investigations for the Laboratory includes a balanced mix of topics for the introductory genetics laboratory. The text emphasizes genetic science as an on-going process of inquiry and investigation in which skills such as data gathering, measuring, calculating, hypothesizing, inferring, analyzing, report writing and utilization of the resources of the World Wide Web are utilized. Students explore genetics by using a wide range of model organisms including Escherichia coli (bacterium), Zea mays (corn), Sordaria fimicola (sac fungus), Helianthus annus (sunflower), Pisum sativum (garden pea), and Drosophila melanogaster (fruit-fly). Most chapters can be completed in a single two or three-hour laboratory period, but several do require follow-up data gathering during a subsequent period. Chapters throughout the third edition provide both a theoretical and historical overview on each topic, making it unnecessary for the user to supplement procedural instructions. The third edition includes new chapters on gene expression (Chapter 13), complementation (Chapter 15), and bioinformatics (Chapter 17).

Analysis of Head Motion in Rotary-Wing Flight Using Various Helmet- Mounted Display Configurations (Part 3. Roll)
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423501705 |
Product Description
This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A692714. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In spite of an immense increase in interest in helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) over the past two decades, there have been few studies on head motion while using HMDs in operational flight. Rotary-wing flight conducted using a number of HMD configurations has resulted in a head position database that will be useful in filling this void. Various analysis techniques have been applied to investigate characteristics of roll (tilt) head position distributions for a slalom flight maneuver for four visual environments: good visual environment (daytime, unaided), night vision goggles, HMD with thermal imagery, and HMD with thermal imagery and symbology.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In spite of an immense increase in interest in helmet-mounted displays (HMDs) over the past two decades, there have been few studies on head motion while using HMDs in operational flight Rotary-wing flights conducted using a number of HMD configurations have resulted in a head position database that will be useful in filling this void. Azimuth head position data have been analyzed for a slalom flight maneuver for four visual environments: good visual environment (daytime, unaided), night vision goggles, HMD with thermal imagery, and HMD with thermal imagery and symbology. The major thread throughout these analyses was that the pilots exhibited greatest head motion for the NVG environment. The two HMD configurations (TIO and RWS) were very similar in exhibited head motion, not indicating any significant differences between the TIO FLIR imagery alone and the RWS FLIR imagery plus symbology. Based on this analysis of the head azimuth position data, it is concluded that the interquartile range IQR (or some other lQR) dispersion statistic is a good discriminator between the head position distributions for the four visual environments. For all subjects, the IQR for the night vision goggle visual environment was larger than for the other three visual environments. Likewise, the IQR for good visual environment was always the second largest. The IQR values for thermal imaging only and rotary wing symbology, the most closely related visual environments, vie for third and fourth ranking.

Blunt Head Injury Protection for Paratroopers. Part 2: Improved System Description
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423522540 |
The Storming Media report number is A241134. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Airborne operations regularly expose paratroopers to risk of head impact. Even relatively mild head impacts, while not life threatening, can cause short-term impairment from dizziness, headaches, memory loss, lack of ability to concentrate, and irritation. There may also be a cumulative traumatic brain injury (TBI) effect from repetitive head impacts compounding the sequelae. Given the necessity for speed and aggressiveness in the airborne operational environment, these symptoms become militarily significant, no matter how temporary, by jeopardizing soldier survivability and the success of the unit's mission. There is an obvious need to protect the soldier in these environments and reduce the head injury rate to a minimum. This test report provides the results of comparative laboratory assessments of seven candidate head protection systems compatible with the airborne configuration of the existing ballistic protective helmet, commonly known as the PASGT (Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops).

The Effects of Natural Locomotion on Maneuvering Task Performance in Virtual and Real Environments
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423525302 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A375793. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis investigates human performance differences on maneuvering tasks in virtual and real spaces when a natural locomotion technique is used as opposed to an abstraction through a device such as a treadmill. The motivation for the development of locomotion devices thus far has been driven by the assumption that a The "perfect" device will result in human performance levels comparable to the real world. This thesis challenges this assumption under the hypothesis that other factors beyond the locomotion device contribute to performance degradation. An experiment was conducted to study the effects of these other factors. The experiment studied sidestepping, kneeling, looking around a corner, and backward movement tasks related to a building clearing exercise. The participants physically walked through the environment under all conditions. There were three treatments: real world (no display, physical objects present), virtual world (head- mounted display, no physical objects), and real and virtual world combined (head-mounted display, physical objects present). The results suggest that performance and behavior are not the same across conditions with the real world condition being uniformly better than the virtual conditions. This evidence supports the claim that even with identical locomotion techniques, performance and behaviors change from the real to the virtual world.
