Book Description
Thin Films for Optical Coating emphasizes the applications of thin films, deposition of thin films, and thin film characterization. Unlike monographs on this subject, this book presents the views of many expert authors. Individual chapters span a wide arc of topics within this field of study. The book offers an introduction to usual and unusual applications of optical thin films, treating in a more qualitative way general topics such as anticounterfeiting coatings, decorative coatings, light switches, contrast enhancement coatings, multiplexers, optical memories, and more. Contributors review thin film media for optical data storage, UV broadband and narrow-band filters, and optically active thin film coatings. Ion beam sputtering and magnetron sputtering deposition methods are described in detail. Characterization techniques are provided, including Raman spectroscopy and absorption measurements. The book also offers theories on light scattering of thin dielectric films and the electromagnetic properties of nanocermet thin films. This reference incorporates recent research by the individual authors with their views of current developments in their respective fields. Of particular interest to the reader will be an assessment of the historical developments of thin film physics written by one of the fathers of thin film technology, Professor M. Auwärter.

The 26 characters in this rhythmic, rhyming baby book are a lowercase alphabet with attitude. "A told b, and b told c, 'I'll meet you at the top of the coconut tree'"--which probably seemed like a good idea until the other 23 members of the gang decided to follow suit. Lois Ehlert's chunky block illustrations show the luxuriant green palm standing straight and tall on the first page, but it begins to groan and bend under its alphabetical burden. First the coconuts fall off, then ("Chicka chicka... BOOM! BOOM!") all the letters also end up in a big heap underneath. A very simple board-book version stops there, but this original text goes on to introduce the helping hands of the 26 uppercase "mamas and papas and uncles and aunts." (Baby to preschool) --Richard Farr

Customer Reviews:
FANTASTIC.......2007-08-10
We learned that our daughter loved this book from story time at school. I searched just about everywhere and couldn't find it. When I found it on Amazon, I was very pleasantly suprised with the price. My baby girl has this story memorized and 'reads' it to her brother, her Tiger and anyone who will listen. Its a wonderful, happy story with a great rhyming quality to it. Its fun and you can really play out the words and phrases. I wished that it was in hardback form because we have read it so much that I'm going to have to buy another one due to the pages falling out of this paperback! Love this book - its an absolute MUST for any children's library!
Simple rhyming story of the alphabet.......2007-07-28
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom is a rhyming story about the alphabet, meant to teach preschool and pre-k age children about the letters of the alphabet. The story itself is very simple.
The story comes in several editions and formats. Our edition of the story starts like this:
A told B
and B told C,
"I'll meet you at the top
of the coconut tree."
And continues page by page through the rest of the alphabet. The use of both lowercase and uppercase letters is helpful, and allows young readers to learn both letter cases.
My youngest had good fun with this one when learning the alphabet.
alphabet story.......2007-07-23
Not that great a hit with my grandchildren (ages 3 and 5)
Maybe they're spoiled by Dr Seuss more fascinating rhymes.
I wouldn't purchase it for a gift.
Fun Book.......2007-06-27
This cute tale of the alphabet's mischievous lowercase letters came highly recommended from a friend who works at an elementary school and has three kids of her own. Although her children are all grown, she wouldn't give up her copy - she loves it that much! I bought the book for my daughter and upon first reading I understood why my friend loves it so much. The rhyming and rhythms in the text make the book a joy to read, plus it's a great exercise in learning the alphabet. It's one of those books that's just as much fun for the adults as it is for the kids. I purchased the book in hardcover, and am glad with that decision since I plan to keep this book around for a long time.
FABULOUS FUN!!!!.......2007-06-02
This is a fun and exciting book- my 5 y/o entire kindergarten class LOVES it! We purchased this book with a CD that Ray Charles is reading-- it's SO FUN!!! You cannot go wrong, every kid needs books like this.

we need more counting books of substance!.......2007-08-13
my kids LOVE the ABC version, so i thought i'd get this... they love it just as much!
Great Book!!!.......2007-08-10
I absolutely love this book! We used this book for teaching numbers before the alphabet in the original Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, so not being like the original was not a problem. I love the fact that inside the cover has all of the numbers 0-20, and the back cover has 0-100. My daughter is 2 years old and is already counting to twenty because of this book! She loves the fact that she has to search for zero (she also likes I Spy's for beginners).
one of the best kids books.......2007-04-17
My son loves the Chicka Chicka books. he loves to find the zero. the only problem is that it is not a board book because it is too long and he already ripped the page because he was so excited.
Kid's Favorite.......2007-03-25
Easy to read book that a child will want to hear over and over again.
teacher approved.......2007-03-23
As a former preschool teacher and currently elementary school teacher, this is a classic that belongs in every childs early repetoire of literature.

Book Description
This volume emphasizes an aspect of children's picture books that has not yet been thoroughly investigated: structure. Both concept books and picture storybooks employ very distinctive structures that, once mastered, can be applied to any picture book you wish to write. When so many of the best picture books employ the same structures, it is important to analyze these structures, understand why they work, and learn how to incorporate them into your own writing. This volume helps you do all that. You will see that no matter how carefully you labor over the tone, word choice, plot, character, setting, theme and style of your picture book, you must have a thorough grasp of its structure if you wish your book to succeed. Indeed, you will find that an expert command of structure is the key to writing a successful children's picture book.
Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2007-10-07
I have at least a dozen books on writing for children and I especially like this one. Not only does it focus exclusively on picture books, which few others do, it provides solid, concrete information that you can apply directly to your own writing. Too many other books offer vague tips that may be helpful in polishing an existing manuscript, but don't help with building your story from the ground up. I've been trying (sporadically) to sell picture book manuscripts for several years now, and I believe that what I've learned from this book will help get me closer to my goal of being a published author. Volumes II and III are on their way to me now and I can't wait to see what they have to offer!
How to write a Children's Picture Book.......2007-03-22
The book takes popular children's book and breaks apart the beginning, middle and ending so that you get a very clear picture of how your story should progess. An excellent resource.
A Constant Companion.......2007-01-02
Eve Heidi Bine-Stock's HOW TO WRITE A CHILDREN'S PICTURE BOOK (VOLUMES I, II and III)is a constant companion and rich resource in the planning and revision of picture books. The deconstruction of picture books, and the detailed classification of crucial characteristics - using classic picture books to illustrate each detailed point - make these books invaluable. Although I particularly use Volume I and II in the planning stage of a new manuscript, all three volumes are again by my side during each revision, and each step of each revision. There is no question in my mind that these books are the biggest resource in pushing my writing to the next level. The volumes are not read-once-and-put-aside books; they are books you will want on your writing desk for constant reference.
Practical, Easy-to-use.......2004-11-11
As an author of many books for children, I found this book to be one of the most practical and helpful tools to format a picture book during the writing process. I'm already using the techniques to structure new projects to make my picture book manuscripts shine! I plan on recommending it to my critique group as well as buying copies as gifts for my writer friends.
A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.......2004-06-07
How To Write A Children's Picture Book focuses especially upon structure as the key to creating a memorable and entertaining treasure for children to read, share, and learn from. Distinguishing between picturebooks and picture storybooks, and closely examining such enduring children's classics as "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" and "Where The Wild Things Are", How To Write A Children's Picture Book is a highly useful and focused guide that dissects the nuts and bolts of writing with a keen eye toward higher achievement and quality. A "must-have" for any aspiring children's picturebook writer.
Customer Reviews:
Not a good kids' book.......2007-09-06
I just finished reading this book to my son for the first time. It pretty much stinks as a kids book, in my opinion. It's too abstract to make sense for little kids (12 mice coming out of and going back into a clock?). And while the story rhymes, it doesn't really go along well with what's actually happening in the pictures, leading my son to constantly have to ask what was going on. I recommend a pass on this book.
Chicka Rock...Chicka Boom!.......2007-06-01
Smart proses and fun to read (even when it's for the 1,000th time) for both parents and child.
Great early elementary book about time.......2005-04-07
While I agree with the reviewer that the rhyme is not quite as smooth as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, pre-reading a couple times to smooth that out takes the flaw out completely, leaving a wonderful read aloud. I teach younger children math, and they would listen to this as many times as I can read it, with great enjoyment.
Not as bouncy as "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom".......2005-01-07
Read these lines: "'Fiddlesticks," said Number SIX. `We'll throw him by the tail into the pancake mix.'" If, like me, you're bothered by the slightly forced rhythm, this book might be a disappointment. If you're saying to yourself, "What's her problem? Sounds fine to me," then this is a great book.
On the plus side, I lliked the look of the torn-paper illustrations showing the numbered mice wreaking havoc in the kitchen while the cat sleeps. And the catchiness of the refrain really does live up to the promise of the title. ("Everybody rock! Around the room! Boom Chicka Rock, Chicka Rock, Chicka Boom!")
But there's an awful lot of unwieldy verse in between the refrains, especially since the emphasis on the numbers seems to indicate that the target audience is pretty young.
It Rocks.......2004-12-05
With the beginning title phrase, Boom Chicka Rock, Archambault repeats the line throughout the story giving the text a wonderful rhythm. The mice who tell the story come alive with the poetic verse and the unusual vocabulary which is a fresh look at some words. The mice are after food of course and the proverbial cat is asleep so the "mice must play". The mice sneak out to find the chocolate cake and each mouse has a number from the clock for their name. Appropriately, there are twelve mice who eventually form the hands on the clock. As the mice sneak around and explore the room, they speak in rhyme; and you can almost hear them singing the verse. They rhythm is great and one could almost hear the mice running around getting into mischief and avoiding the sleeping cat. Adding to the sound devices, Chitwood has effectively used torn paper collage for the artwork. With vivid primary colors and mice portrayed like a track team, the text and art nicely complement each other. The torn paper collage shapes give the mice vibrant characteristics highlighted by the bright primary colors and the numbers on each mouse. The numbers reinforce learning numbers and learning where the numbers are situated on a clock. Overall, this lively story demonstrates a unique way of using the concept of numbers and blends the text with bright appealing pictures. It rocks!

Boom Chicka Boom.......2000-07-28
This is a great reading book. Wonderful rhythm. A nice alternative to the typical "now I know my ABCs"
watch out what age you want this for.......1998-04-16
for the right age, this could be a good book. but watch out- the book is stories that when told involve the audience as if making "rain"- snap, clap, drumroll. nothing spectacular.
