1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your time or money.......2004-07-02

This book comprises a compendium of monographs on all aspects of coatings technology. Its coverage is admirably broad, and its hefty presence on your bookshelf is sure to impress visitors. Unfortunately, that's where this book will stay, because its information content isn't worth the poor trees that were sacrificed on its behalf.

The monographs are only a few pages long--in many cases little more than pamphlets--and apparently hastily written. They lack the scope and detail that would make this volume a good reference work. Citations of the primary literature are narrow and limited at best.

Rather than spending the exorbitant price of this book, spend an hour or two with your favorite Net search engine reviewing specific aspects of coatings that interest you. You are bound to come out ahead.

        Book Description

With his bestselling blend of nail-biting intensity, daring artistry, and storytelling magic, Dean Koontz returns with an emotional roller coaster of a tale filled with enough twists, turns, shocks, and surprises for ten ordinary novels. Here is the story of five days in the life of an ordinary man born to an extraordinary legacy—a story that will challenge the way you look at good and evil, life and death, and everything in between.

Jimmy Tock comes into the world on the very night his grandfather leaves it. As a violent storm rages outside the hospital, Rudy Tock spends long hours walking the corridors between the expectant fathers' waiting room and his dying father's bedside. It's a strange vigil made all the stranger when, at the very height of the storm's fury, Josef Tock suddenly sits up in bed and speaks coherently for the frist and last time since his stroke.

What he says before he dies is that there will be five dark days in the life of his grandson—five dates whose terrible events Jimmy will have to prepare himself to face. The first is to occur in his twentieth year; the second in his twent-third year; the third in his twenty-eighth; the fourth in his twenty-ninth; the fifth in his thirtieth.

Rudy is all too ready to discount his father's last words as a dying man's delusional rambling. But then he discovers that Josef also predicted the time of his grandson's birth to the minute, as well as his exact height and weight, and the fact that Jimmy would be born with syndactyly—the unexplained anomal of fused digits—on his left foot. Suddenly the old man's predictions take on a chilling significance.

What terrifying events await Jimmy on these five dark days? What nightmares will he face? What challenges must he survive? As the novel unfolds, picking up Jimmy's story at each of these crisis points, the path he must follow will defy every expectation. And with each crisis he faces, he will move closer to a fate he could never have imagined. For who Jimmy Tock is and what he must accomplish on the five days when his world turns is a mystery as dangerous as it is wondrous—a struggle against an evil so dark and pervasive, only the most extraordinary of human spirits can shine through.

        5 out of 5 stars Analysis.......2007-10-05

As I took the keys with my left hand, I swung my right fist in a low-origin arc, hard into his crotch, driving the nail file deep and no doubt pinning the parts of his male package into an unprecedented arrangement. This is only the beginning of the action in "Life Expectancy" a novel by Dean Koontz. On the day of Jimmy Tock's birth, his dying grandfather predicted five terrible days in Jimmy's life. I think everybody should read this book.

The conflicts in this book are both exciting and plentiful. The major one being between Jimmy and a clown named Punchinello. Jimmy and Lorrie are pulled into a library and held as hostages by a band of clowns attempting to blow up the town. However, this is only one of the many conflicts going on inside and outside of Jimmy Tock. Jimmy is a very caring person and puts his family and those who he cares about first in his life.

Love triumphs all. This is the theme of "Life Expectancy." Jimmy relates all his choices on how his family will be effected, not how it will effect himself. He is more concerned about how his family and friends well being than with his own. Jimmy is persistent and the kind of person who would never give up. He is not one to just roll over and die.

This is the best book I have ever read. It is a great mixture of humor, action and love. This book also has many absurd twists that are hard to predict, and if you do predict what will happen next, you will be second guessing it until it happens. In my own opinion this book is phenomenal.

This book has it all. It has great conflicts, a good theme, great twists, many qualities of different genres, and who can forget clowns being stabbed in the crotch with a nail file. I think this is an overall amazing book. I recommend this book to everyone, not just a single group.

4 out of 5 stars A different, but still a terrific read by Dean Koontz........2007-10-02

In the past I have read many of Dean Koontz's novels and I just decided to revisit this author. I tend to get bored when an author's books are predictable and repetitive.

In "Life Expectancy" the story takes the reader into an unusual situation. A dying man predicts five important days in the life of his grandson who is being born. The old man dies just when his grandson is born. The story was a fun and suspenseful read, though not a scary read. I enjoyed the characters, the twists and surprises in the story, and the "never say die" attitude of Jimmy and Lorrie. In the final pages, there is an inevitable twist that Koontz does well in hiding until the later stages of the story. I have gladly recommended this book to others, especially if they're a bit leery of Koontz previous deep spooky type stories.

5 out of 5 stars When Clowns Go Bad.......2007-09-28

Coulrophobia is an abnormal or exaggerated fear of clowns. According to a Wikipedia page devoted to the subject, this Bozo-phobia plauges some adults as well as children and has inspired a number of stories featuring clowns-gone-bad. I wasn't a coulrophobic before reading Life Expectancy. Now I am.

Jimmy Tock is born on a dark and stormy night in the same hospital where his grandfather is dying and where evil clown number one, Konrad Beezo, awaits the birth of his own son. The dying words of Jimmy's grandfather form a dark prophesy, foretelling the precise calendar dates of five terrible days in Jimmy's life. As if this dark prophesy weren't enough, the death of Konrad's wife during the birth of his own son, Punchinello Beezo, sends Konrad into a murderous frenzy that claims the life of the doctor and casts a pall over what should have been a joyous event for the Tock family.

Jimmy Tock's idyllic childhood as son of a pastry chef gives way to the first of the five terrible days, which begin in his early twenties and end in his early thirties. Not surprisingly, the Beezo clown duo, on the run from justice all these years, proves instrumental in lending terror to these terrible days. While the narrative flow is broken by the need to flash forward several years in time to get from one terrible day to the next, Koontz uses Jimmy's comic first-person narrative voice and various motifs to achieve a smooth storytelling experience. I particularly liked his nurture-over-nature view of childrearing, his inquiries into what drives men (including clowns) to embrace evil, and the way he uses narrative humor to complement the farcical plot. He also makes you understand how coulrophobia may stem from a clown's ability to mask evil emotions behind an artificial smiley facade.

While Life Expectancy doesn't dethrone Odd Thomas as my favorite Koontz novel, it is his most humorous and one of his most suspenseful offerings. Strongly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Very entertaining with strange twists............2007-09-13

Koontz offers readers a view into the world of the unpredictable. While he starts off with the "five bad days" that were announced on a relative's death bed, we see how these five bad days progress and become intertwined. While some of it seems surreal, in fact I believe it is supposed to be. It takes a while to let go of that, and appreciate the brilliant humor that he writes in. There is a nook of humor in every sentence. This was a laugh out loud book even when the story was gruesome. While I was glad to see the "five horrible days" go by, I was sad to have this book end. Many other writers are just boring compared to Koonz.

        4 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-09-02

Very good book, as always Dean Koontz writes great books. This book keeps you going all the way to the end.

          Book Description

Life expectancy is an important issue in cases of serious personal injury. This book explains how to calculate life expectancy, and how to avoid common mistakes and misunderstandings. Basic concepts are illustrated with data from studies involving a wide range of conditions, including alcoholism, cerebral palsy, colon cancer, diabetes, and spinal cord injury (tetraplegia). There are also case studies of three of the major topics in life expectancy—cerebral palsy; traumatic brain injury; and tetraplegia.

The chapters are user-friendly, with extensive use of visual aids such as graphs and tables. The subject of epidemiology is at the heart of the methods that are discussed, and additional reading sources are suggested for those readers who would like to learn more about this important area of modern medicine.

            Book Description

A multidisciplinary study that reconstructs Jamaica's rise from low to high life expectancy and explains how that was achieved. Jamaica is one of the small number of countries that has attained a life expectancy nearly matching that in the rich lands, such as the US, despite having a much lower level of per capita income. Why this is so is the Jamaica paradox. This book provides an answer, surveying possible explanations at the outset of Jamaica's rapid gains in life expectancy, in the 1920s, and since. Jamaica’s approach to reducing mortality emphasized that school children and their parents master lessons about how to manage disease hazards, and led to a successful collaboration between public health authorities and the people.

              Book Description

Research into the role of diet in chronic disease can be difficult to interpret. Measurement errors in different studies often produce conflicting answers to the same questions. Seventh-day Adventists and other groups with many vegetarian members are ideal study populations because they have a wide range of dietary habits that adds poer and clarity to research findings. This book analyzes the results of such studies, focusing on heart disease and cancer. These studies support the benefits of a vegetarian diet and in addition provide evidence about the effects of individual foods and food groups on disease risk that is relevant to all who are interested in good health. Fraser places the findings in athe broader context of well-designed nutritional studies of the general population. He discusses the degree of confidence we can have in particular relationships between diet and disease based on the strength of the evidence. While this is a scholarly book, it is written in clear English and contains an extensive glossary so that it should be accessible to a wide audience.

              Book Description

Modern analytical theories of fatigue coupled with a knowledge of processing effects on metals make up the sound basis for designing machine parts that are free from unexpected failure. Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts provides the information and the tools needed for optimal design. It highlights practical approaches for effectively solving fatigue problems, including minimizing the risk of hidden perils that may arise during production processes or from exposure to the environment. The material is presented with a dual approach: the excellent coverage of the theoretical aspects is accented by practical illustrations of the behavior of machine parts. The theoretical approach combines the fundamentals of solid mechanics, fatigue analysis, and crack propagation. The chapters covering fatigue theories are given special emphasis, starting with the basics and progressing to complicated multiaxial nonlinear problems. The practical approach concentrates on the effects of surface processing on fatigue life and it illustrates many faceted fatigue problems taken from case studies. The solutions demonstrate the authors' detailed analyses of failure and are intended to be used as preventive guidelines. The cases are a unique feature of the book. The numerical method used is the finite element method, and is presented with clear explanations and illustrations. Fatigue Design: Life Expectancy of Machine Parts is an extremely valuable tool for both practicing design engineers and engineering students.

Many medical authorities predict that average life expectancy could well exceed 100 years by mid century and rise even higher soon thereafter. This astonishing prospect, brought on by the revolution in molecular biology and information technology, confronts policymakers and public health officials with a host of new questions. How will increased longevity affect local and global demographic trends, government taxation and spending, health care, the workplace, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid? What ethical and quality-of-life issues are raised by these new breakthroughs?

In Coping with Methuselah, a group of practicing scientists and public policy experts come together to address the problems, challenges, and opportunities posed by a longer life span. This book will generate discussion in political, social, and medical circles and help prepare us for the extraordinary possibilities that the future may hold.

                        Book Description

Between 1800 and 2000 life expectancy at birth rose from about 30 years to a global average of 67 years, and to more than 75 years in favored countries. This dramatic change was called a health transition, characterized by a transition both in how long people expected to live, and how they expected to die. Rising Life Expectancy examines the way humans reduced risks to their survival, both regionally and globally, to promote world population growth and population aging.
