Book Description
The Isoquinoline Alkaloids presents an in-depth review of 22-sub groups of isoquinoline alkaloids all related to their common origin from the amino-acids phenylalanine and tyrosine. The coverage is not intended to be comprehensive and encyclopaedic, but all of the salient features of the elucidation of structures, structural variation, stereochemistry, chemical reactions, syntheses, biogenetic origins and relationships, and pharmacology are covered, and an extensive bibliography of original papers is provided to assist further detailed study. The opening chapter comprises a review of the formation of alkaloids from amino-acids and the general methods of structural degradation used in the definitive elucidations of structures. Two final chapters cover napthylisoquinolines, which are biogenetically distinct from those discussed in earlier chapters, and miscellaneous natural products that are rationally included with other groups. This book should be of interest to graduates and researchers in the field of organic chemistry, natural product chemistry and biochemistry.

Book Description
Isoquinoline alkaloids represent one of the two largest groups of alkaloids, the other being indole alkaloids. The present volume, which is the third of this series, describes the spectral data of about 700 isoquinoline alkaloids and covers the literature up to 1992. The spectral data of the remaining classes of isoquinoline alkaloids will be published in another volume within a year.
The compounds are arranged according to their structural types in various subclasses. Within each subclass they are arranged in order of increasing molecular weight. Compounds in the same subclass and having the same molecular weight are arranged in order of increasing carbon number.
The UV, IR,
1H-NMR and
13C-NMR spectral data are given in descending orders of magnitude. All &egr; values in the UV spectra have been converted to log &egr;. The chemical shifts in the
1H-NMR spectral data are presented in ppm and the chemical shifts in the older data published in &tgr; values have been converted to &dgr; values to ensure uniformity of format. The protons and carbons to which the data refers have been italicised. If any of the data given is that of a salt (e.g. hydrochloride) then this is indicated in brackets before the data. If the compounds are known by more than one name, the older names are given in brackets after the newer one. Spectral data of simple derivatives of compounds are also reported, but only if the data for acetyl, benzoyl, methyl and ethyl derivatives are given. The numbering systems used are given both at the beginning of each sub-class as well as at the end of the book. Compound, molecular formula, molecular weight, plant sources and compound-type indices are also included which should enhance the utility of the book.

Peru (The Travellers Wildlife Guide ).......2007-01-11
Excellent book, well presented, beautifully illustrated, full of good factual information enabling the traveller to pick and choose areas of interest in this totally amazing country.
Peru (The Traveller's Wildlife Guide).......2006-11-10
Used this on our trip to Peru and it was the envy of our very knowledgeable tour guide. We ended up buying him a copy as a gift.
A gift to our Peru guide.......2006-11-06
Our Peruvian guide (who had been in the business for about 20 years) saw this book and salivated so much that we gave it to him at the end of our trip. Very complete, very well organized, pictures were wonderful. Great help in identifying species. Another guide said it was the bible of Peru Wildlife.
Review of "Peru (The Traveller's Wildlife Guides)".......2006-03-15
This book is an excellent intro primer for the ecotraveler. Its wildlife focus is mainly amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammalsts. Insects, fish, and plants get some mention. The book's country overview and its major habitat type descriptions, illustrations, and explanations are clear and useful as are the species photos and info. Thoughtful comments and info on conservation issues and ecotourism are included.
Perfect for the Average Ecotourist.......2005-10-29
The "Traveller's [sic.] Wildlife Guides" are designed for travelers who desire more background on a country's flora and fauna than one can typically glean from a national park brochure or even a good guide. The main strength of these guides is their relatively low price. Illustrated field guides for exotic destinations can easily cost over $60. These guides, by comparison, are a steal at just under $20. The main weakness is that they are not comprehensive. They provide information and illustrations for common birds, reptiles, mammals, and insects, but not for exotic species. Hence, serious birdwatchers will also need to purchase James F. Clements and Noam Shany's "A Field Guide to the Birds of Peru."
In every other sense, however, the Pearson guide is marvelous. The introductory chapters on Peru's ecotourism business, its geography and habitats, parks and reserves, and ecology and natural history are extremely well-written and highly informative. The second half of book is a field guide with pictures on one page and descriptions on the adjacent page. The descriptions are brief and to the point. They also contain symbols for the habitat types each species prefers. For common bird identification, I found this guide to be much easier to use in the field than the Clements and Shany guide, which provides pictures in one part of the book and descriptions in another. This book worked well as a companion to Clements and Shany because it enabled me to focus on common birds first and if I could not find my bird in the Pearson list, I then cracked open the Clements and Shany guide.
In addition to the Peru guide, Interlink Books also publishes "Traveller's Wildlife Guides" for Australia, Costa Rica, Belize and Northern Guatemala, Brazil, and Ecuador and the Galapagos.

Book Description
The second swashbuckling adventure in the internationally acclaimed Captain Alatriste series
Captain Alatriste, Madrid's most charismatic swashbuckler, returns in Pérez-Reverte's acclaimed international bestseller. The fearless Alatriste is hired to infiltrate a convent and rescue a young girl forced to serve as a powerful priest's concubine. The girl's father is barred from legal recourse as the priest threatens to reveal that the man's family is not of pure blood and is, in fact, of Jewish descentwhich will all but destroy the family name. As Alatriste struggles to save the young hostage from being burned at the stake, he soon finds himself drawn deeper and deeper into a conspiracy that leads all the way to the heart of the Spanish Inquisition. A literary thriller that delivers adventure and rich historical detail, Purity of Blood captivates to the final page.
Customer Reviews:
Auto de Fe, Anyone?.......2007-10-05
'Purity of Blood' is the second in the Captain Alatriste series. Pereze-Reverte once again takes the reader to 17th century Spain and the rule of Philip IV and the Spanish Inquisition. Monty Python may not have expected it, but the Spanish Inquisition is at the heart of this tale.
The story is fairly straightforward. Alatriste's poet friend the don Francisco Quevedo (an historical figure) seeks the swordfighter's help in freeing a family friend from an "unpleasant" life in a convent. Mayhem ensues and our narrator young Inigo Balboa finds himself in the tender clutches of the Inquisition.
A good story, but Perez-Rverte's real strength is putting the reader inside the skin of a 17th century hidalgo as well as the fears of living in a society where the Inquisition holds sway. The presentation of an auto de fe through the eyes of one its, umm, participants is fascinating. I highly recommend reading Captain Alatriste first. You will understand and enjoy the book much more.
Another Period Swashbuckler with An Almost Modern Perspective .......2007-09-03
Arturo Perez-Reverte keeps his swashbuckling Captain Diego Alatriste going in this one, the second in the Alatriste series, as the indomitable soldier of fortune and his boy apprentice, Inigo de Balboa, son of one of the Captain's former comrades in arms, stumble into still another adventure.
This time they run up against the Inquisition and the Spanish obsession with the pure blood of "Old Christians", a euphemism for Catholic Spaniards who have no Jewish blood in their ancestry (since the Jews of the land were either driven out or forced to convert a century or so before this story takes place). Alatriste finds himself enlisted by a poet friend into a Quixotic scheme to rescue the daughter of a Spanish caballero of, it turns out, suspect blood. The young girl has been inducted, apparently against her will, into a convent that is said to serve as a front for a rogue priest's private seraglio and Alatriste is prevailed upon to lead a rescue attempt. Things take a sharp turn southward as Alatriste leads his small force of conspirators in the dark of night onto the convent's grounds and poor Inigo, the Captain's ward and page, ends up in the hands of the Inquisition.
Alatriste must figure out who is behind the machinations that have ensnared them and find a way to cut the knot that binds. The dauntless Captain remains the strong silent type as he scuttles about in the shadows, dodging the Inquisition's agents and seeking out those who have conspired against him. At the very heart of the plot lurks an old and deadly enemy and Alatriste will get his chance to at last engage this man before the story runs its course.
There are weaknesses here, unfortunately, including a slow and almost ponderous beginning and a heavy emphasis on poetic stanzas which don't play as well in English as they may, perhaps, in Spanish. All are recorded in a somewhat tiresome fashion by our narrator, none other than the young Inigo, ensnared, in this book, at the very center of the web that has been spun for Alatriste. Fortunately, the Captain, honorable and deadly as he is, still has a few friends in high places and a few chits he can call in.
One particular problem with the book, is its narration. Told in first person throughout, Inigo spends much of this adventure in an Inquisition prison cell in Toledo, so it seems rather odd when he recounts the Captain's actions in detail, as they are occurring far away from him in Madrid. The idea, one supposes, is that Inigo learned everything that happened afterwards from the other participants and put it all together many years later. Still, it rings odd to switch from Inigo's firsthand account of his own captivity in the hands of the Inquisitors to an equally detailed telling of the Captain's nighttime escapades. Either Inigo had very good sources, including the Captain himself, who is famously taciturn, or a great imagination in which case his tale is not entirely reliable (though this is never suggested by the narration itself). Such reports as he provides are jarring because they seem to sap the logic of the narrative.
Still, the book proceeds swiftly and engages both in terms of plot and its capacity for recreating the era of Spanish imperial decline. We get a rich sense of what Spain in the early 17th century might have been like, of the swaggering caballeros, hidalgos, poets and other courtly hangers on who prance and mince about the towns and countryside, engaging in various schemes and preening themselves for the ladies. Along with the fast paced action which occasionally kicks in, and the fun trying to unravel the mystery that lies behind the Captain's latest situation, the book is certainly worthwhile. I plan to read the next in the series.

Other swashbucklers:
The Fencing Master
With Fire and Sword
Musashi: An Epic Novel of the Samurai Era
The King of Vinland's Saga
A timely cape and sword adverture.......2007-07-30
Captain Alatriste is the icon of an epoch, when Spain, from being the biggest power of the world, started its decadence. The recreation of the times is accurate, full of flavor and colors. I recommend this book for people who lives the adventures books, like mental movies.
Swashbuckler par excellence but ..........2007-06-24
No question but I prefer The Seville Communion or The Club Dumas - give me a good mystery anytime. I had not read Captain Alitriste which put me at a disadvantage for my expectations. I am unlikely to put swashbucklers in my favorite reads category but Purity of Blood is an interesting afternoon's diversion. What puts this book above the average historical thriller?
1. The characters are fleshed out and thoughtful in the sense of being true to their historical time and position. While Spanish society is shown with all its warts - the Inquisition, social interactions that easily escalate to bloodshed, hypocracy and mysticism thriving side by side ... - the characters are both products of and critics of the society.
2. The setting and plot reflect detailed knowledge of the time on the part of the author. The novel has a sense of reality to it that is often missing in the genre.
3. Poetry is quoted throughout the book - and not just by the poet. Here and there a very perceptive philosophical statements makes its way into the text. This provides the reader with a bit to think about rather than counting the pages until the next crisis.
Come for the swordfights - stay for the verse.......2007-06-23
Swordsman and his youthful sidekick facedown villains and religious fanatics in long ago Spain. The action is swift, the philosophical asides and accompanying poetry of some of the players is marvelous. Truth be told, the characters with their exotic names kind of run together. But still a delight.

Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A223723. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: In the past five years, the Base Realignment and Closure Commissions (BRAC) have ordered the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) to close or deactivate 15-20 distribution centers. Consequently, DLA has been forced to relocate millions of items of wholesale stock to the remaining depots. Past relocation actions have placed most, if not all, displaced stock at one of the Primary Distribution Sites in Susquehanna, PA and at San Joaquin, CA without regard to the expected location of demand for that stock. We present a method for relocating stock that places stock near its expected demand points, thus reducing future delivery costs and logistics response time.
