    Book Description

This book covers important new developments of the last five years in the area of cluster chemistry, presenting an excellent view of the successes and shortcomings of both current state-of-the-art theory and experiment. Each chapter, contributed by a leading expert, places heavy emphasis on theory without which the detailed analysis of the spectroscopic and kinetic results would be compromised. The cluster reactions reviewed in this work include electron and proton transfer reactions, hot atom reactions, vibrational predissociation, radical reactions, and ionic reactions. Some of the theories applied throughout the text are product state distribution determinations, state-to-state dynamical information, and access to the transition stage of the reaction. The discussions serve as a benchmark of how far the field has come since the mid 1980's and will be a good update for students and researchers interested in this area of physical chemistry.

      Book Description

This book presents coherent and systematic coverage of the broad and dynamic field of free atom and cluster atom chemistry. The text provides a comprehensive overview of the current literature and describes the mostimportant experimental techniques developed since 1980 including bimetallic clusters/catalysts, carbon clusters (fullerenes) and trapped single atoms. Metal atoms, clusters, and particles are covered in sequence with the Periodic Table.

        Product Description

This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A008343. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: There are several different types of parallel computer architectures in use today. Some of these are large machines that house hundreds of processors with low- to mid-range computing capabilities. A different type of parallel computer architecture becoming increasingly popular is that of the cluster. Clusters are basically networked workstations: each containing 1 to approx. 30 processors with mid- to high-range computing capabilities. While arguments can be made for both paradigms, clusters seem to be gaining in popularity. They provide fast computation through multiplicity and fast processor throughput. Furthermore, code reuse on different cluster environments is now possible with the adoption of standard interprocessor communication tools like the Message- Passing Interface (MPI) and High Performance FORTRAN (HPF). This report compares and contrasts the performance of MPI and HPF on a currently available computer cluster.

          Book Description

This volume contains the papers presented at the 26th Jerusalem Symposium. The topic of this meeting was reaction dynamics in clusters and condensed phases, which is of central interest in areas of chemical dynamics, kinetics, photochemistry and condensed matter chemical physics. The main theme of the conference was the interrelationship between the dynamics in large finite clusters and in infinite bulk systems. Issues addressed include microscopic and macroscopic solvation phenomena, cluster and bulk spectroscopy, photodissociation and vibrational predissociation, cage effects, interphase dynamics, reaction and energy transfer in clusters, dense fluids, liquids, solids and biophysical systems.

              Description:
Surfactant-stabilised palladium nanoclusters with an average diameter of about 7.3nm (determined by XRD) are used as catalysts in propylene hydrogenation. Experiments performed in an isothermal batch reactor (T = 308K), with total pressures in the range 0.25-9.0bar and with initial hydrogen molar ratios varying between 0.05 and 0.40, provide a further insight on the reaction kinetics. It is shown that a Langmuir-Hinshelwood rate equation well represents the reaction data, which mechanism involves competitive adsorption of the reagents, with dissociation of hydrogen on the catalyst surface, and where surface reaction is the limiting step. Nonlinear optimization of the initial rate data provided the kinetic parameters of the rate law (k = 5.569molg"P"d^-^1s^-^1; K"H"""2=3.799x10^-^2bar^-^1 and K"C"""3"H"""6=0.996bar^-^1), which is validated by integration of the mass balance in the batch reactor.

                            Book Description

This introduction to Atomic and Molecular Physics explains how our present model of atoms and molecules has been developed over the last two centuries, both by many experimental discoveries and, from the theoretical side, by the introduction of quantum physics to the adequate description of micro-particles. It illustrates the wave model of particles by many examples and shows the limits of classical description. The interaction of electromagnetic radiation with atoms and molecules and its potential for spectroscopy is outlined in great detail and, in particular, lasers as modern spectroscopic tools are discussed thoroughly. Many examples and problems with solutions are offered to encourage readers to actively participate in applying and adapting the theory to specific situations.

                              Book Description

Rather different problems can be lumped together under the general term 'laser control of atoms and molecules'. They include the laser selection of atomic and molecular velocities for the purpose of Doppler-free spectroscopy, laser control of the position and velocity of atoms (i.e. laser trapping and cooling of atoms), and laser control of atomic and molecular processes (ionization, dissociation) with a view of detecting single atoms and molecules and particularly separating isotopes and nuclear isomers. Over the last decades the principal problems posed have been successfully solved, and many of them have evolved remarkably in the subsequent investigations of the international research community. For example, the solution of the problem of laser cooling and trapping of atoms has given birth to the new field of the physics of ultracold matter, i.e. quantum atomic and molecular gases. The laser non-coherent control of uni-molecular processes has found an interesting extension in the field of laser coherent control of molecules. The concept of laser control of position has been successfully demonstrated with microparticles (optical tweezers), concurrently with investigations into atomic control. The laser photo-ionization of molecules on surfaces has led to the development of novel techniques of laser-assisted mass spectrometry of macromolecules, and so on. The aim of this book is to review these topics from a unified or 'coherent' point of view. It will be useful for many readers in various fields of laser science and its applications.

This book presents a consistent, up-to-date description of the extremely manifold and varied experimental techniques which nowadays enable work with neutral particles. It lays the physical foundations of the various experimental techniques, which utilize methods from most fields in physics. Hence this book is intended not only as a reference standard for researchers, but also as a textbook to enable students to gain a solid background and introduction to the field and its techniques.

                                        Book Description

In response to the explosion of theories and experiments since the appearance of the first edition, the author has revised and expanded his basic text. New sections include up-to-date discussions of multiphoton ionization, and electron-atom and atom-atom scattering in laser fields, reaffirming the work's position as the standard introduction to the field.
