It was only in the early 1990s that carbenes with the carbene carbon being incorporated in a nitrogen containing heterocycle (N-heterocyclic carbenes or NHCs) were found to be stable enough to be isolated. Since the first report on the application of NHCs as ligands in transition metal catalysis in 1995, NHC have found numerous applications and have been established as a versatile and indispensable class of ligands. For many reactions like metathesis or cross-coupling reactions NHCs have often become the ligands of choice, allowing otherwise difficult transformations. In this book leading experts have surveyed major areas of application of NHC metal complexes in catalysis. The authors have placed a special focus on nickel- and palladium-catalyzed reactions, on applications in metathesis reactions, on oxidation reactions and on the use of chiral NHC-based catalysts. This compilation is rounded out by an introductory chapter and a chapter dealing with synthetic routes to NHC metal complexes. The use of NHC as ligands in catalysis has reached a certain level of maturity and this book allows the reader to get a balanced view of this increasingly important ligand class.

Among the most continually referenced books in my office.
Although both editions were intended as lab study material, Benson's compact spiral edition is a simple yet comprehensive microbiology reference manual for the practicing physician.

MEMORY-REFRESHING LAB MANUAL.......2003-04-03

Just like its 'complete version' sibling, the price of this 'short version' "Microbiological Applications" lab manual is on the high side. However, the book did a good job in sieving and replicating, (as concise as possible), the contents of its 'big-brother'.
This manual dealt with every practical issue relating to undergraduate microbiology course. It is a compact body of practical information, which also paid enough tribute to the theoretical portion of its subject. Almost every information undergraduates would need in microbiology lab is present in it.
Still, I would add that the structure of this abridged book makes it more suitable for revisions. Anybody who wants an indepth coverage of microbiological techniques should simply add eight dollars to the listed price of this book and (instead) buy the 'complete version'. Go for this 'short version' only if you need a memory refresher.

Great lab manual.......2002-07-19

I loved it! It's short, straight to the point, the experiments work, and everything is illustrated just great. It was a joy to work with this book.

I love this series... you must read it to understand. It's all about a homicide detective named Lt. Eve Dallas and how she goes about solving a case which always seems imposibble to solve at first.

This book is well written. I do not enjoy reviews that give too much of the storyline away, suffice I should say this book does not let me down from the previous Lieutenant Eve Dallas series. However, it will stand-alone, you do not have to read any other book in this series to know what is going on with it. I would not spoil it for you if I were to tell you that the murders start off extremely grisly and get very personal to the investigator. You gotta' love this book because, Lt. Eve will not stop until the killer is found. The suspense kept me going till the end.

The United States is alone among Western democracies in its support for capital punishment, which was only briefly abolished throughout this country between 1972 and 1976. Today, 38 states have some form of capital punishment. Yet studies show that the death penalty is not a deterrent to crime, that racial disparities in the implementation of capital punishment are rampant, and that all kinds of procedural errors, incompetent defense lawyers, and mistaken eyewitness identifications lead to an alarming number of wrongful convictions. Attitudes toward the death penalty have changed dramatically throughout the course of history, evolving from times when public executions were occasions of solemn and pious ritual to those when it was an excuse for raucous entertainment, and finally to the modern era of private, bureaucratized, mechanized, and sanitized executions conducted out of sight and out of mind. Conforming thus to modern sensibilities, state-sanctioned killing is somehow more acceptable to us than public hangings, because we can imagine that the inmate's death is relatively painless, and not in violation of the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against "cruel and unusual" punishment. This may or may not be true; Stack presents compelling arguments to the contrary. What is certain is that Dead Wrong demonstrates beyond a doubt that death row is itself a form of psychological torture and of slow, painful dehumanization.

In this book, Charles Spurgeon leads the reader to the only true source for overcoming or dealing with sorrow and suffering. The heavy of heart, of which there are many among us, can find true solace from the wisdom contained in Isaiah 61: 1-3. It is hard to believe that 3 short verses in Isaiah 61 can be the the source of such wisdom and knowledge, and the inspiration for the mourner. I would highly recommend this unique and special book for any looking for physical, mental or spiritual relief.
