Book Description
A new scientific focus on the corrosion process and its amelioration While atmospheric corrosion has been studied by engineers for nearly a century, a systematic scientific investigation of this vital field has become possible only in recent years. In this timely and authoritative work, Christofer Leygraf and Thomas Graedel present a comprehensive look at atmospheric corrosion six thousand years after "iron was first separated from its ore . and promptly began to corrode!" Combining expertise in corrosion science and atmospheric chemistry, Leygraf and Graedel describe corrosion's potentially devastating effects on structures and materials, examine the latest scientific tools available for preventing or minimizing corrosion damage, and emphasize new insights obtained over the last decade through controlled studies as well as computer modeling investigations. Key topics include:
* Basic principles of atmospheric corrosion chemistry
* Corrosion mechanisms in controlled and uncontrolled environments
* Degradation of materials in architectural and structural applications, electronic devices, and cultural artifacts
* Protecting existing materials and choosing new ones that resist corrosion
* Predicting how and where atmospheric corrosion may evolve in the future
Complete with appendices discussing experimental techniques, computer models, and the degradation of specific metals, Atmospheric Corrosion is an invaluable resource for corrosion scientists, corrosion engineers, conservators, environmental scientists, and anyone interested in the theory and application of this evolving field.

Book Description
This volume offers solutions to the problems associated with atmospheric corrosion by covering corrosion theory, the mechanisms and effects of corrosion on specific materials, and the means of protecting materials against atmospheric conditions. It assesses the financial cost of protecting construction materials against the elements and it considers temperature, humidity, and the presence of contaminants in the air to optimize the ability of materials to withstand the influence of weathering.
Book Description
Every atom in our bodies was once inside the fiery core of a star that exploded billions of years before our solar system was formed. Like the original Homeric epic, the atom at the center of this book makes its way across a truly cosmic stage. Exploding supernovas, solar winds, collapsing stars preceded the rise of life on earth and one day may foretell its end. Yet the story that Krauss tells is inextricably our story. Throughout this astonishing and monumental work, he manages to stoke our wonder at the powers and unlikely events that conspired to create our solar system, our eco-system and us.
Download Description
We are all, literally, star children. Every atom in our bodies was once inside the fiery core of some supergiant star which exploded billions of years before our solar system formed. Lawrence Krauss takes us along for the ride of the life of a single particle, an oxygen atom, and helps us understand where matter came from, how many stars and galaxies helped create our universe, how the Milky Way formed, and how the thousand million lives and deaths our atom experiences will affect all life on earth. Krauss presents the most cutting edge science in the world though understandable everyday phenomena. The story begins when the universe was the size of an atom itself, and we follow it throughout its continuous transformations of matter and energy, from heat to gas, from mountains to people. The breath you just took is as likely to contain atoms from the final breath of Julius Caesar as it is to contain a virus from the cough of your child's classmate. And that same atom, 100 billion years from now, when all the stars have burned out and the sun has swallowed the earth-- that atom's life span will continue. Krauss predicts what will be spawned to soak up the fruits of our universe, and what, if anything, will survive.
Customer Reviews:
An amazing book.......2002-09-13
This is the best introductory book for those who think they don't have what it takes to dab into cosmology but would like to give it a try. My mom who never went beyound the 8th grade in school would have an easy time reading and understanding the topics of this book (but then again, she enjoys the countless hours we spend outside staring through the telescope's eyepiece even when we can't find anything cool to observe). If you have always wanted to give cosmology a try, this book is for you.
The arrow of Time.......2002-03-09
A great read. From Antarctic research, to greenhouse gas and galaxy collision. An easy to follow thread.
Failed Attempt-Stick to Star Trek.......2002-01-20
I had high hopes for this book, but they quickly evaporated.
The author introduces a device (one that has been tried
before, actually) of following the cosmic history of an
atom to discuss many aspects of science. But within
a few chapters the approach gets stale and feels totally
forced and awkward. This is partly due to the author's
incessant and clumsy attempts to be chatty, and partly
due to his just not being able to communicate the science in
an interesting and informative manner. I really did love his
Star Trek books--somehow in that totally pop-science arena
his style worked. But here, with real science, it fails.
(And, as an aside, his using semen as an example of bodily
fluids that we all inhale was, really, beyond tasteless. I
do like writing that pushes the envelope, but this is
just silly,forced, and embarrassing.)
odd one.......2001-09-05
This is an odd book. It is another brave attempt to tell the whole story of creation, this time using the oxygen atom as a main character. In some ways it works as a literary device, but in some ways the concept of the single atom just gets in the way and seems attached to the story even when the author no longer has anything interesting or useful to say about oxygen. The idea of following a single atom is more of a marketing device. There are parts that are well written, some that remain confusing, and more complicated than they need to be. I did like some of the material on the formation of the solar system. But, of course, the author is not able to do much with inflation. Actually nobody has, yet. Nothing new on quantum mechanics. (I thought his comments regarding our daily intake of material from someone else's sweat and sperm to be in poor taste even if highly original. His ideas of what can make a story more entertaining can be a little off. A good editor would have helped here. ) There is also a distressing lack of even simple charts and graphs and timelines which would have helped keep track of many concepts far better than referring to the atom as a unifying concept. A good budget would have helped here. Krauss is an earnest writer (I prefer Quintessence), and he knows what he is talking about. But with a little care and genuine interest from a good publishing house this book could have been much better.
Incidentally, Atom in no way compares to Jacob Bronowski's classics either in style, gravitas, or subject matter. If you are interested in the history of science or just the history of science writing you would do better to read them first before you begin to make comparisons with anything written in the last twenty years.
The long and winding road of oxygen.......2001-08-01
I've looked for a book like this one for a long time. The book's scope is fantastic - covering the Big Bang to the evolution of the solar system. The author does an admirable (and detailed) job translating results from simulations of solar system evolution. My main complaint is that sometimes following those oxygen atoms around was confusing and distracting. Overall, though, I recommend this book.

Book Description
Laser fusion is under study in laboratories throughout the world because it may have an important impact on the production of practically inexhaustible sources of energy from controlled thermonuclear fusion reactions. This book describes the essential processes associated with laser thermonuclear synthesis and summarises the most important developments that have occurred during the second half of the 1970s and in the early 1980’s. Laser techniques and plasma diagnostics specifically used for laser-produced plasmas are covered, together with the results of the measurements that have been made. In some areas emphasis is given to techniques and results from the Lebedev Physical Institute, which is the main laboratory engaged in this field in the USSR. Data from laboratories all over the world, however, are also collated and compared to give an overall, coherent view of the current state of knowledge in this field.

Book Description
It is a wild race against time as Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer and the newest member of the Women's Murder Club, attorney Yuki Castellano, lead an investigation into a string of mysterious patient deaths--and reveal a hospital administration determined to shield its reputation at all costs. And while the hospital wages an explosive court battle that grips the entire nation, the Women's Murder Club hunts for a merciless killer among its esteemed medical staff. The newest addition to the topselling new mystery series takes the Women's Murder Club to the most terrifying heights of suspense they have yet to encounter. THE 5TH HORSEMAN proves once again that James Patterson is "the page-turningest author in the game right now " (San Francisco Chronicle).
Customer Reviews:
Another Great one!.......2007-10-09
I've read 1 through 5 of this series, and I love them. This one was equally as good.
Awesome book, but disappointing ending.......2007-09-10
The women's murder club is back, and as usual, this was another awesome James Patterson thriller. There's lots of action & two mysteries to be solved & it kept me hooked throughout the whole book. I was, however, a little disappointed with the ending. I was like, that's it? I was expecting so much more. They finally catch the killers, but don't get confessions or why they did it. I am a huge CSI fan, and it would have been nice to understand why they did it to help the story.
Again, Lt. Lindsay Boxer is handling two cases - a girl is found murdered in a car, but wearing someone else's clothes, while there are mysterious deaths happening at a local hospital. The patients are found with buttons on their eyes. Each of the patients shouldn't have died, they came in with pretty simple problems, and in each case, they were given an overdose of medication or the wrong medication. The story & detective work is awesome & really keeps your attention. I just wish there was more to why the murders were happening.
Intriguing.......2007-09-09
Have not read him before, but I like his style. The short little chapters give you lots of places to stop of you get interrupted. Well written and easy to follow the "clues" with the characters. Doesn't overload one's mind with so many characters that a "Who-dun-it" turns into "Who IS that?" I didn't want to put it down, but since life goes on around me, I truly did like that I could finish a "chapter" quickly.
Just An Okay Entry.......2007-09-09
I enjoy the Woman's Murder Club series, but as other reviewers have pointed out, the character development of the four members has really gone downhill. Other than Lindsay Boxer, I don't really feel like I know these women at all.
That being said, the plot of THE 5TH HORSEMAN is incredibly fast paced, and there are plenty of twists and turns that keep things interesting. Patterson knows how to design an intense thriller, and the last hundred or so pages keep you guessing. I certainly wasn't bored with this novel, so I'll give it three stars for its entertainment value.
A major weakness of THE 5TH HORSEMAN is its reliance on two separate serial killer storylines that are totally unrelated. I thought the "car girls" storyline was kind of weak and underdeveloped, and the resolution unsatisfactory for the most part. I would have preferred a subplot involving the personal life of one of the main characters instead.
In short, this novel is good fun, but it's probably the weakest entry in this series. I'm also not pleased that Patterson's publisher is re-issuing this entire series in trade paperback, at a more expensive price for consumers. Not a great way to reward your loyal fans, Mr. Patterson.
Good Read.......2007-09-03
I'm finding myself enjoying this series more than Alex Cross lately and this installment didn't disappointment.
However, it wasn't perfect. I didn't understand the need for the "Car Girls" storyline, which had nothing to do with the main storyline. All it seemed to do was distract from that. I also didn't like how we weren't given any insight into the lead that led Lindsay to wrap things up in the epilogue. Where did that come from?
The series isn't nearly as good since Jill was killed off. Yuki is just not a character I find interesting or care much about, so I can't warm up to her and I don't like how the ending seems to indicate she'll be turning into Jill II even more. I've never cared much for Cindy, so I find it harder to stay interested in the group when Lindsay and Claire are the only ones I like.
I look forward to the next installment.

Fifth Horseman, Larry Collins, Dominique LaPierre.......2007-05-11
I first read this book almost 15 years ago. It is practically bleeding with researched technical facts to enhance the plot, which is also captivating. Two main characters, Whalid and the President, seem to change their outlook later in the book.
It is a must read, especially now. A TLC broadcast from 1997, Doomsday: On The Brink, shows that as decades pass, such an incident might be inevitable. In the last 30,000 years, every other weapon the human race has invented has proliferated and been used. Decades? Centuries? Millenia? When the people who remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki have passed? Who might be tempted to push the button then? Not just political or military leaders, but terrorists?
A terrifying must read.
A Gripping Story!.......2004-05-20
This was a book that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
The ultimate villain Mommar Quadaffi is able to hide a nuclear
bomb in New York City.He also has a team of terrorists who are
loose in New York.He is then able to use the bomb as a means of leverage against the President of the United States. In the mean-
time the FBI,CIA, and the New York Police Department are searching high and low to locate the bomb. The clcok starts to
click down on the time left to find the bomb. The President and
the law enforcement agencies are under the gun.Quadaffi plays the
role of the villain very skillfully. This is a very scary book
that is indeed a page turner. Read it.
Five stars is not enough for this book.......2004-01-15
Definitely this book deserves SIX stars, it will keep you reading from the first page till the last one, involves all the presidents of the world and even with that is an easy book to read, but here are my questions:
Why could this happened 25 years ago and not right now? I think that this book is timeless.
What does the president will really do?
What does the Police, FBI and CIA among others will really do? They really know how to handle this kind of problem?
All the countries will respect the president's decision?
Read this book and think about these questions.
Yard Sale Find.......2002-02-15
I paid 25 cents for this book and it was the best quarter I ever spent. This book grabs you at the beginning and does notlet go of you to well after you are done reading it. The subject matter is so topical that the 22 years from original press does not matter at all. Buy it used, find in in the library, or if you have money to burn buy it from a Zshop. You won't be disappointed.
A riveting and nail-biting tale.......2002-01-26
Readers of Frederick Forsyth, Jack Higgins and Tom Clancy must get their hands on this brilliantly written thriller of a potential nuclear catastrophe in NY city. This book seems especially plausible today and adds to the impression. The characters are believable and the plot unfolds superbly, no let-ups or loose strings! A must read for all thriller readers, you will not be disapppointed. I read this book at a stretch and it is at the top of my all-time favorites list (and I've read quite a few thrillers!)
Customer Reviews:
The 'Club' makes a comeback!.......2007-05-30
After a couple of less-than spectacular entries in this series, 'The 5th Horseman' marks a return to the more suspenseful tone of the earlier books. The plot, with its possible connection between big-city hospital corruption and a series of apparent mercy killings, will definitely keep readers guessing!
The ladies of the 'club' have a few more personal conflicts than usual, which adds a few wrinkles to their friendship, and breathes a bit of fresh air into the usual characterizations. Each one has a significant role to play, in contrast to the last two books which focused more on Lindsay.
This is a good jumping-on point for those who are new to the series.
