The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This thesis examines the depot maintenance processes of naval H-6O helicopters. Budget and political climate issues are discussed. Aircraft Service Period Adjustment (ASPA) deferral rates, Standard Depot Level Maintenance (SDLM) turnaround time, depot maintenance direct labor and material costs, and projected backlog using depot requirements and funding are examined. Data analysis indicates a need for significant process improvements or radical changes to depot processes. The Integrated Maintenance Concept (IMC) will consolidate organizational and depot level maintenance at fleet locations. IMC offers several advantages over traditional depot maintenance methods. Using regression analysis, the direct costs of SDLMs conducted at the Pensacola Naval Aviation Depot from 1987 to 1995 were used to estimate direct costs of depot maintenance based on: aircraft age, the projected level of depot maintenance, and employment (operational versus training). Within the scope of this research, a weak correlation existed between the direct labor costs and aircraft age and employment as explanatory variables; direct material costs showed a higher correlation: for total direct costs, these two variables explained 34.4 percent of the variation. Incorporating additional explanatory variables, such as flight hours prior to SDLM, may improve the model. Finally, recommendations are made to facilitate the transition to Integrated Maintenance, emphasizing data collection requirements and data analysis techniques to better estimate maintenance and funding requirements.

Many factors characterizing flying tempo and item repair and transit time influence the level of fleet readiness. Readiness-Based Leveling (RBL) considers these factors as it seeks to maximize aircraft readiness as it allocates spare reparable items between bases and a depot. The purpose of this research was to demonstrate the validity of using response surface methodology (RSM) within the context of RBL in an effort to quantify the influences these factors have on aircraft readiness. RSM applied designed experiments and least squares regressions in developing a series of empirical models quantifying correlations between one uncontrollable and seven controllable factors and RBL's output. Verification tests indicated the empirical models represented -- to a high degree -- the quantitative relationships present between the inputs and output of RBL. Although valid conclusions cannot be made from the models (a substitute input was used in place of a usual D041 input), the methodology as demonstrated is valid.

The objective was accomplished by evaluating the existing system and using technical functional and operational analyses to determine the feasibility of improving USN practice in contract methodology and language for future CLS implementations in general and on the T - 45TS program in particular. Using archival research, interviews, and site visits, this study identifies the current system and state of the art commercial best practices in service contracts and contracting/quality control oversight applicable to USN CLS implementation. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The field of structural health monitoring (SHM) attempts to reduce labor and cost by allowing technicians to monitor selected properties of an aircraft's structure to detect impending failure. This research examines methods to detect damage to a thermal protection system (TPS) tile using representative 2024-T3 aluminum plates. Plates are subjected to modal analysis in single and joined conditions in an attempt to provide the capability of sensing damage to a tile on the surface of a vehicle while the sensors remain on the superstructure of the airframe. Jointly, the development of a means to model the system using finite element techniques is explored. It is found that the finite element modeling technique produces correlating modal frequencies within a 7.19% worst case average when compared to the physical tests. This leads to the ability to compare mode shapes and frequencies to detect damage in a system.

The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This research investigated the fatigue response of precracked 558 x 177.8 x 6.35 mm (22.0 x 7.0 x 0.25 in) 2024-T351 aluminum panels repaired with single-sided partially bonded, unidirectional, eighteen ply boron/epoxy reinforcements. Disbonds were introduced into the bondline of each repair during the adhesion process using teflon inserts. Five different disbond configurations, with varying disbond locations and sizes, were tested. Each repaired panel was subjected to constant amplitude cyclic fatigue loading with a maximum stress of 120MPa. Results from the different configurations were compared against one another and against repaired panels with no debonds to assess the effect of disbonds on repair life. Results from the experimentation showed that even in the case of very large disbonds (20% of total bond area), the bonded repairs significantly extended the lives of the cracked panels. Disbond configurations with disbonds located away from the crack in the aluminum panel, performed comparably to the repaired panel with no disbonds. Disbond configurations with disbonds covering the crack in the aluminum panel yielded slightly lower lives than those obtained from repaired panels with no disbonds. Cyclic fatigue loading caused no increase in size of the artificially induced disbonds. Cyclic disbond growth was observed in the immediate vicinity of the crack. Finite element analysis using the Three Layer Technique was performed to assess the ability of current modeling techniques in predicting the life of cracked thick aluminum panels repaired with composite patches.

Although the objective evidence of evolution has received considerable attention in many books over the years, very little has been written about the subjective experienced (mental) side of the lives of the creatures involved. This book is about how we evolved from four-legged mammals with simple minds, through semi-upright apes who are occasionally thoughtful, to mentally complex erect humans.

HOW WE GOT TO BE HUMAN deals with what science frequently dodges, ignores, or even denies: subjective life as experienced by animals, apes, and humans. Mixing much of what is known from science and the humanities with his own unique perspective, science writer William H. Libaw provides a provocative and stimulating thesis on the origin and evolution of consciousness. Drawing on scientific evidence derived from the use of gestures, deceptive behavior, and language, Libaw shows that the key factor in the evolution of our subjective minds was the expanison of the ability to think with mental concepts, ideas, and generalizations. This expansion of what could be thought about allowed our predecessors to move from animal mentation, which is mostly limited to basic desires, to minds with limitless ideas about the natural world and the unseen supernatural world.

Along the way, Libaw presents a number of intriguing ideas, including: For the earliest animals with the genetic mutation that engendered it, subjective experience was of Darwinian adaptive value in a rapidly changing environment; the use of gestures and deception among apes and some birds suggests conscious concepts in their mental activity; complete spoken language came first from the mouths of a group of children who inherited the previously unused genetic language capability; and human males have retained the animal rutting instinct and amplified it with conceptual prurience, which leads them to eroticize females and sometimes pressure them to have sex.

Good but DEPRESSING!.......2007-09-21

I had to read this for school and let me just say, you will probably feel pretty depressed at the end of this book. The whole book has this cloud of dead always surrounding it. Another than that, it's a pretty good book. It's got alost of teen issues and sexual things in it, so I really wouldn't recommend it to anyone under the age of 14 or 15.

An amazing first novel.......2007-09-01

I had heard of "The Perks Of Being A Wallflower" for a long time from people on the internet. I had also seen it awhile and I eventually decided to buy it on Amazon to read it.

When it came in I didn't expect much of it. It was a small book and the whole story was a bunch of letters. Or at least that was my first impression.

After reading it, I've officially stated it as my favorite book. Although it was a first novel from Stephen Chbosky, I must say he truely did an amazing job writing it. It was so easy for me to relate to the main character Charlie. And all of the other characters seemed so real. I read it in two sittings. I won't give the plot because plenty of other reveiwers have posted it.

But I will tell you that after reading it my look on life was completely changed. If you ever have read it or will read it, you will understand what I mean.

Just so you know if you're considering to buy it, this is coming from a thirteen year old. And although I may be young, I can still tell you quite honestly that I highly recomend buying no matter your age. Some of the topics included though may not be sutible for a younger audience.

Wonderful story about a boy we would all love.......2007-08-30

Chbosky has revealed a great deal about youth and their problems, and does so sensitively and with empathy. You have to read it closely because he weaves his facts into the story so subtly that you might miss them.

Heartwarming.......2007-08-25

For some reason I decided to check out the audio book for a mild distraction. As a woman in her 30's, I was moved how the author did a wonderful job capturing the feelings of lonliness, anger, happiness, despair and the basic need of being love and loving others that most of us experience.

In my opinion, it almost takes someone with some life experiences to really see just how fragile we can be, whether it was yesterday or almost twenty years ago.

Best of the genre since Go Ask Alice.......2007-08-24

I wish I'd discovered "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" when I was still in high school. The main character is stunningly real and gives an authentic literary voice for millions of young adults. He goes through typical youthful indiscretions without the gloss of so many other stories featuring teens. Its short enough to finish in one read and powerful for readers of all ages.
