A short illustrated dictionary of alchemy.......2002-06-23
I think the other reviewer ("a reader from NYC") of this book has written rather harshly, apparently following a browser's view in a bookshop but not a more prolonged reading. Diana Fernando admits in her introduction to possessing "a satirical edge to [her] nature", and this, together with with a British classical education and sense of humour, may have led to the other reviewer's annoyance.
This is a useful supplement and introduction to other alchemical works, written in contemporary language and delightfully illustrated, with over 500 entries about alchemical processes, people, writings, concepts and history. The book has 192 pages, including 2 pages of a select bibliography, and includes over 160 illustrations.
In her introduction to the book, Fernando states "my subject demands a sense of humour... Such pedantry as weighs down the saturnine allegories of alchemy, such yearnings for elixirs, such potterings with semen and dung, such anxiety for secrecy and such gibberish resultant therefrom - all these call for a touch of love, of airy levity." Diana Fernando has certainly achieved that with her book, and enlivened what might otherwise be an over-serious subject long consigned to the dustbin of scientific prehistory.
A sugar-coated excursion into the fallacious........1999-03-30
I saw a copy of this at a bookstore and was relatively horrified at the amazing lack of truthful information. Ms. Fernando seems to have spent a great deal of time filling up her pages with tangential nonsense rather than exploring the heart of the matter. Alchemy is a fascinating subject which is entirely capable of filling modest libraries with its centuries old wisdom. This book only gleams the surface and makes inadequate simplifications. Various mystics throughout history are given brief bios generally ending in "and he was an alchemist." Several of these are incorrect (i.e. Maimonides) and seem to have been inserted to gather historical support. Alchemy's history is rich and doesn't need this infantile form of scholarship.

Book Description
Flies ( Dipteria) have had an important role in deepening scientists'understanding of modern biology and evolution. The study of flies has figured prominently in major advances in the fields of molecular evolution, physiology, genetics, phylogenetics, and ecology over the last century.
This volume, with contributions from top scientists and scholars in the field, brings together diverse aspects of research and will be essential reading for entomologists and fly researchers.

The Best Overall Single Volume on the Subject.......2005-09-21
That annoying fly that buzzes around your head until you reach for the fly swatter has a long history behind it. Flies have been buzzing around for at least 250 million years. There are now some 150 families, with 150,000 defined species. Flies have been studied as long, if not longer, than any similar organism. There have been so many studies that it is difficult for individual researchers to gain a broad perspective on the organisms they study.
This book is an attempt to bring together contributions from a diverst group of scientists in a single volume. The book is broken into three broad units: Phylogeny, Genomics and Developmental Biology, and Evolutionary Ecology and Biogrography.
In each of these parts, leading researchers have written articles that cover the main areas where research is being conducted. Yeates and Wiegmann edited this collection and contributed one article of their own. The other articles are written by specialists in their particular area and have been peer reviewed by a distinguished panel of scientists. Each chapter ends with an extensive list of references that can be used for further study.
This volume is the best single volume work that provides a general overall view of the subject that I've seen.

In Sue Monk Kidd's The Secret Life of Bees, 14-year-old Lily Owen, neglected by her father and isolated on their Georgia peach farm, spends hours imagining a blissful infancy when she was loved and nurtured by her mother, Deborah, whom she barely remembers. These consoling fantasies are her heart's answer to the family story that as a child, in unclear circumstances, Lily accidentally shot and killed her mother. All Lily has left of Deborah is a strange image of a Black Madonna, with the words "Tiburon, South Carolina" scrawled on the back. The search for a mother, and the need to mother oneself, are crucial elements in this well-written coming-of-age story set in the early 1960s against a background of racial violence and unrest. When Lily's beloved nanny, Rosaleen, manages to insult a group of angry white men on her way to register to vote and has to skip town, Lily takes the opportunity to go with her, fleeing to the only place she can think of--Tiburon, South Carolina--determined to find out more about her dead mother. Although the plot threads are too neatly trimmed, The Secret Life of Bees is a carefully crafted novel with an inspired depiction of character. The legend of the Black Madonna and the brave, kind, peculiar women who perpetuate Lily's story dominate the second half of the book, placing Kidd's debut novel squarely in the honored tradition of the Southern Gothic. --Regina Marler
Book Description
Sue Monk Kidd's ravishing debut novel has stolen the hearts of reviewers and readers alike with its strong, assured voice. Set in South Carolina in 1964, The Secret Life of Bees tells the story of Lily Owens, whose life has been shaped around the blurred memory of the afternoon her mother was killed. When Lily's fierce-hearted "stand-in mother," Rosaleen, insults three of the town's fiercest racists, Lily decides they should both escape to Tiburon, South Carolina--a town that holds the secret to her mother's past. There they are taken in by an eccentric trio of black beekeeping sisters who introduce Lily to a mesmerizing world of bees, honey, and the Black Madonna who presides over their household. This is a remarkable story about divine female power and the transforming power of love--a story that women will share and pass on to their daughters for years to come.

THE POWER OF THE SISTERHOOD OF WOMEN..........2006-01-27
This New York Times best selling novel is a beautifully written, coming of age story, set in rural South Carolina in 1964 against the back drop of the civil rights movement. It is the touching story of a young white girl, fourteen year old Lily Owens, whose mother died in a tragic accident when Lily was about four. Lily lives with her father, a harsh man with whom no love is lost, on a peach farm outside Sylvan, South Carolina. Her mother's death stands between them.
Neglected by her father, Lily is brought up by Rosaleen, a big-hearted black woman, who loves Lily and whom Lily loves. Yet, hers is a lonely existence, compounded by her unquenched thirst for information about her mother, Deborah. All she has left of her mother are some cloudy memories and a box containing a few mementos, among them a picture of a Black Madonna, inscribed with the words, "Tiburon, S.C."
When Rosaleen goes into town to register to vote, she feels empowered by the passing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and has a run-in with the town's three biggest racists, resulting in Rosaleen being taken into custody. Lily arranges for her to break free. Together, they seek sanctuary in Tiburon, South Carolina, where Lily discovers the mystery of the Black Madonna.
Taken in by a trio of middle-aged black women who are sisters, as well as beekeepers, Lily is introduced to the secret life of bees and begins to learn some important life lessons. She also learns something about her mother and finds love where she least expected.
This is simply a beautifully realized novel, written in a true Southern voice by a wonderful writer with a story to tell. It is little wonder that this compelling book has received so many accolades. It is a stunning fiction debut by the author.
Book Description
In conversation with the Bible and Sue Monk Kidd's best-selling novel The Secret Life of Bees (Penguin Books, 2003), Unveiling the Secret Life of Bees explores the embodiments of women, feminine power, relationships, and the importance of women in the life of the church. It looks at the roles of women in the Bible and how those roles are defined or redefined in The Secret Life of Bees, expanding our concepts of the "Divine mother," earthly mothers, sisters, daughters, wives, and the "queen bee." Along the way, we encounter remembrance, forgiveness, reconciliation, liberation, community, rituals, the feminine face of God, and the important role women play in one another's lives.

The Perfect Gift for my sister in laws.......2007-07-19
I was so enamored by the description of this book in both English and Spanish when I was looking for sewing, knitting, and crochet books for my women relatives in Mexico who are often alone long periods while their husbands work contracts in the US doing various things such as planting pines and electrical work. When I visited I realized they could do many crafts but had limits on their knowledge as to what to make and do such that they often bought kits. So I decided to look at Amazon who has always pleased me with their selection of books in English and Spanish for books to help them learn when Amazon suggested this book when I was looking around. My sister in laws are so excited to get a good reading book in Spanish that is a novella. The life is nice there a bit hot, a bit underdeveloped as when they first moved to this town there were only 3 houses and 300 houses now does not support much entertainment such that they have to look for entertainment such as DVD's, and music CD's we were sending to them for awhile. I never thought before to send them Novels and I am so pleased that Amazon suggested this excellent book to me. I want to thank everyone who did such excellent reviews on this book both in Spanish and English along with whomever decided to translate it to Spanish that I chose to purchase this along with sewing books. It came in excellent new condition for an excellent price and I read enough to know it is an excellent book for a gift idea in Spanish and English. Thanks to Amazon and all it's sellers along with people who took time to do excellent reviews because we were very very pleased with this book.
Buenisimo!!! Me encanto!!.......2006-09-05
Este libro ha sido muy refrescante de leer. A mi me encanto muchisimo.
