Book Description
Liquid crystals allow us to perform experiments that provide insight into fundamental problems of modern physics, such as phase transitions, frustration, elasticity, hydrodynamics, defects, growth phenomena, and optics (linear and non linear). This excellent volume meets the need for an up-to-date text on liquid crystals. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments is a result of personal research and of the graduate lectures given by the authors at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Paris VII, respectively. The first part of the book presents historical background, the modern classification of liquid crystals, and mesogenic anatomy; the second part examines liquid crystals with nematic and cholesteric orientational order. Topics include dielectric and magnetic properties, Frederiks transitions and displays, light scattering, flow and electrohydrodynamic instabilities, surface anchoring transitions, interfaces, equilibrium shapes, and the Mullins-Sekerka instability. Smectic and columnar liquid crystals are covered in more detail by the authors in a separate volume, entitled Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments. The presentation is illustrated throughout by simple experiments, some of which were performed in class. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments provides a useful reference intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in liquid crystals, condensed matter physics, and materials science.

Flexible Polymer Chains in Elongational Flow: Theory and Experiment
Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540651810 |
Book Description
The behavior of polymer solutions in elongational flow has been treated quite recently in the literature but scattered in disparate scientific journals not easily accessible. This is very surprising since elongational flow is known to be very effective on polymer chains and thus more interesting than the already wellknown shear flow. This book covers for the first time the subject from the point of view of the various disciplines. It achieves a balance between science, experiment and technology and integrates the fundamental and practical aspects.

Amino Acid Derivatives: A Practical Approach (Practical Approach Series)
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198558538 |
Book Description
Many successful syntheses of homochiral organic compounds use an amino acid derivative as a starting point. Such syntheses are not confined to peptides as targets; peptide synthesis strategies have been narrowed down to a few well-defined protocols (and these are not covered in this book). Outside the peptide field, many non-routine syntheses have been established that give the intended products in which the structural features of the starting amino acid are barely recognisable. This book is a laboratory guide that covers the early stages of syntheses under these headings, which invariably call for modifications to the functional groups of readily-available L-amino acids. It will therefore give invaluable guidance to the preparation of amino acid derivatives to be used not only in these broad area of synthesis but also in amino acid analysis. Synthetic work with amino acids carried out by new users and by experienced chemists and other scientists, will be supported by the detailed practical protocols and background information provided in this book.

ASIN: 3540207708 |
Book Description
The basic concept of this new edition remains unchanged: Emphasis is again put on a broader description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by 115 selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Thus, an additional textbook will not be needed in order to understand the experiments.
The 4th edition nevertheless contains numerous changes: Chapter 1 and 2 are enlarged, 15 older examples have been replaced by new ones and background text is added. Suitable for students in organic and polymer chemistry as well as for chemists in industry who want to acquaint themselves with the theoretical and practical aspects of macromolecular chemistry.
From the reviews:
"This is an excellent book for all polymer chemsits engaged in synthesis research studies and education. It is educationally sound and has excellent laboratory synthetic examples. The fundamentals are well done for the teaching of students and references are resonably up-to-date. As in previous issues, there are sections dealing with an introduction; structure and nomenclature; methods and techniques for synthesis, characterization, processing and modification of polymers.
....The authors have noted the following changes from previous editions- a new section on correlayions of structure, morphology and properties; revision and enlargement of other property and characterization procedures; additional new experiments such as controlled radical polymerization; enzymatix polymerizations; microelmulsions; and electrical conducting polymers.
This is a high quality textbook at a reasonable price and should be considered as a suitable references for all engaged in synthetic areas of polymer research." (Eli M. Pearce)

Cellulose Nanocomposites: Processing, Characterization and Properties (Acs Symposium Series)
Manufacturer: An American Chemical Society Publication ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0841239800 |
Book Description
The book will deal with new nanostructured composites, where both the reinforcement and the matrix are bio based. Cellulose combined with natural polymers led to the development of a new class of biodegradable and environmental friendly bionanocomposites. This new family of nanocomposites is expected to have remarkable improvement of material properties when compared with the matrix polymers or conventional micro- and macro-composite materials. Such improvements in properties typically include a higher modulus and strength, improved barrier properties, increased heat distortion temperature. This new class of renewable nanocomposites is expected to capture new market in transportation, medical and packaging applications. This book will include the raw materials which can be used for making these composites, separation/isolation technologies of cellulose based reinforcements from diverse natural resources and it will also include a brief overview of the recent advancements in the surface chemistry of nanocellulose. Characterization methods such as atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman Spectroscopy, for the nano scale cellulose reinforcements and for the bio-nanocomposites will be discussed. Further, different processing methods for nanocomposites and their mechanical, thermal properties, barrier properties will be included. This will be the first book on the topic of cellulose based Nanocomposites! This is a relatively new research field and there are no books available on this topic. There is a growing interest on biopolymer based nanocomposites in developed and developing world (Japan, USA, Europe, China, South Africa, Australia) and especially if the nanocomposites are based totally on renewable raw materials. We can see several ongoing research projects on this topic in Europe and North America, and there is an emerging research trend for developing micro-and nano-fibre reinforced biopolymers.
