    Book Description

A definitive work on ESR and polymer science by today's leading authorities

The past twenty years have seen extraordinary advances in electron spin resonance (ESR) techniques, particularly as they apply to polymeric materials. With contributions from over a dozen of the world's top polymer scientists, Advanced ESR Methods in Polymer Research is the first book to bring together all the current trends in this exciting field into one comprehensive reference.

Part I establishes the fundamentals of ESR, from experimental techniques to data analysis, and serves as a valuable overview for the beginning ESR student. Part II introduces the broad range of ESR applications to polymeric systems, including living radical polymerization, block copoly-mers, polymer solutions, ion-containing polymers, polymer lattices, membranes in fuel cells, degradation, polymer coatings, dendrimers, and conductive polymers. By exposing readers to the great potential of ESR, the authors hope to encourage more extensive application of these methods.

      Book Description

Liquid crystals allow us to perform experiments that provide insight into fundamental problems of modern physics, such as phase transitions, frustration, elasticity, hydrodynamics, defects, growth phenomena, and optics (linear and non linear). This excellent volume meets the need for an up-to-date text on liquid crystals. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments is a result of personal research and of the graduate lectures given by the authors at the École Normale Supérieure de Lyon and the University of Paris VII, respectively. The first part of the book presents historical background, the modern classification of liquid crystals, and mesogenic anatomy; the second part examines liquid crystals with nematic and cholesteric orientational order. Topics include dielectric and magnetic properties, Frederiks transitions and displays, light scattering, flow and electrohydrodynamic instabilities, surface anchoring transitions, interfaces, equilibrium shapes, and the Mullins-Sekerka instability. Smectic and columnar liquid crystals are covered in more detail by the authors in a separate volume, entitled Smectic and Columnar Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments. The presentation is illustrated throughout by simple experiments, some of which were performed in class. Nematic and Cholesteric Liquid Crystals: Concepts and Physical Properties Illustrated by Experiments provides a useful reference intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in liquid crystals, condensed matter physics, and materials science.

        Book Description

The behavior of polymer solutions in elongational flow has been treated quite recently in the literature but scattered in disparate scientific journals not easily accessible. This is very surprising since elongational flow is known to be very effective on polymer chains and thus more interesting than the already wellknown shear flow. This book covers for the first time the subject from the point of view of the various disciplines. It achieves a balance between science, experiment and technology and integrates the fundamental and practical aspects.

1 out of 5 stars Not for me.......2006-06-29

A mass of facts and data hardly comprehensible with bad explanations and exampes, in my view.

5 out of 5 stars A fast track DOE (Design of Experiments) course:.......2004-09-13

If the Experiment you are dealing with requires a statistical design and you're a novice to DOE, this would be an ideal book. The book explains the basic concepts of statistics with easily comprehendible examples. The chapters on factorial design are well organized and explained with hypothetical data. After reading this book you'll have a better understanding of factorial design jargons: confounding, interaction, linearity, factors, levels etc... This not a bulky book and you can finish reading it in one week.

5 out of 5 stars Practical guide to a complex subject.......2002-02-13

This book provides a simple, practical, easy to understand approach to a potentially confusing subject. It quickly brings the reader to the point where they are able to design and run basic designed experiments. It provides enough statistical background to facilitate the basic understanding necessary for success without bogging the reader down with unnecessary theory.

        4 out of 5 stars Practical Application.......2002-02-07

As a manufacturing engineer, I have performed rather complex DOEs. The benefit for me from this book has been a deeper understanding of the theoretical side of DOEs while aquiring excellent practical advice for executing them. I was also involved in a training seminar with Mr. Del Vecchio, and very impressed with his ability to teach a complex subject with a down to earth approach.

4 out of 5 stars For technologists in a hurry.......2002-02-07

Strikes a nice balance between theory and practice. Gives enough fundamentals to allow the reader to know the basics of what is going on with the analysis in designed experiments, but does not bog the reader down with complex equations that are best left to the user's computer software to crank through.

Provides practical guidance in selecting one experimental design over another, and the appendix allows one to set up multi-variable experiments with pen and paper - if the software in your program of choice is weak in this area.

          Book Description

Many successful syntheses of homochiral organic compounds use an amino acid derivative as a starting point. Such syntheses are not confined to peptides as targets; peptide synthesis strategies have been narrowed down to a few well-defined protocols (and these are not covered in this book). Outside the peptide field, many non-routine syntheses have been established that give the intended products in which the structural features of the starting amino acid are barely recognisable. This book is a laboratory guide that covers the early stages of syntheses under these headings, which invariably call for modifications to the functional groups of readily-available L-amino acids. It will therefore give invaluable guidance to the preparation of amino acid derivatives to be used not only in these broad area of synthesis but also in amino acid analysis. Synthetic work with amino acids carried out by new users and by experienced chemists and other scientists, will be supported by the detailed practical protocols and background information provided in this book.

            Book Description

The basic concept of this new edition remains unchanged: Emphasis is again put on a broader description of the general methods and processes for the synthesis, modification and characterization of macromolecules. These more fundamental chapters will be supplemented by 115 selected and detailed experiments. In addition to the preparative aspects the book also gives the reader an impression on the relation of chemical constitution and morphology of Polymers to their properties, as well as on their application areas. Thus, an additional textbook will not be needed in order to understand the experiments.

The 4th edition nevertheless contains numerous changes: Chapter 1 and 2 are enlarged, 15 older examples have been replaced by new ones and background text is added. Suitable for students in organic and polymer chemistry as well as for chemists in industry who want to acquaint themselves with the theoretical and practical aspects of macromolecular chemistry.

            From the reviews:

"This is an excellent book for all polymer chemsits engaged in synthesis research studies and education. It is educationally sound and has excellent laboratory synthetic examples. The fundamentals are well done for the teaching of students and references are resonably up-to-date. As in previous issues, there are sections dealing with an introduction; structure and nomenclature; methods and techniques for synthesis, characterization, processing and modification of polymers.

....The authors have noted the following changes from previous editions- a new section on correlayions of structure, morphology and properties; revision and enlargement of other property and characterization procedures; additional new experiments such as controlled radical polymerization; enzymatix polymerizations; microelmulsions; and electrical conducting polymers.

This is a high quality textbook at a reasonable price and should be considered as a suitable references for all engaged in synthetic areas of polymer research." (Eli M. Pearce)

              Book Description

The book will deal with new nanostructured composites, where both the reinforcement and the matrix are bio based. Cellulose combined with natural polymers led to the development of a new class of biodegradable and environmental friendly bionanocomposites. This new family of nanocomposites is expected to have remarkable improvement of material properties when compared with the matrix polymers or conventional micro- and macro-composite materials. Such improvements in properties typically include a higher modulus and strength, improved barrier properties, increased heat distortion temperature. This new class of renewable nanocomposites is expected to capture new market in transportation, medical and packaging applications. This book will include the raw materials which can be used for making these composites, separation/isolation technologies of cellulose based reinforcements from diverse natural resources and it will also include a brief overview of the recent advancements in the surface chemistry of nanocellulose. Characterization methods such as atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman Spectroscopy, for the nano scale cellulose reinforcements and for the bio-nanocomposites will be discussed. Further, different processing methods for nanocomposites and their mechanical, thermal properties, barrier properties will be included. This will be the first book on the topic of cellulose based Nanocomposites! This is a relatively new research field and there are no books available on this topic. There is a growing interest on biopolymer based nanocomposites in developed and developing world (Japan, USA, Europe, China, South Africa, Australia) and especially if the nanocomposites are based totally on renewable raw materials. We can see several ongoing research projects on this topic in Europe and North America, and there is an emerging research trend for developing micro-and nano-fibre reinforced biopolymers.

The Reproductive Biology of Bats presents the first comprehensive, in-depth review of the current knowledge and supporting literature concerning the behavior, anatomy, physiology and reproductive strategies of bats. These mammals, which occur world-wide and comprise a vast assemblage of species, have evolved unique and successful reproductive strategies through varied anatomical and physiological specialization. These are accompanied by individual and/or group behavioral interactions, usually in response to environmental mechanisms essential to their reproductive success.

                          Book Description

Cleary, North Carolina, is a sleepy mountain town -- the kind of place where criminal activity is usually limited to parking violations. Not so, lately. Four women have disappeared from Cleary over the past two years. And there's always a blue ribbon left near the spot where each of the women was last seen. There are no bodies, no other clues, and no suspicion as to who their abductor might be. And now, another woman has disappeared without a trace.

It is to this backdrop that Lilly Martin returns to close the sale of her mountain cabin, marking the end of her turbulent eight-year marriage to Dutch Burton, Cleary's chief of police. Dutch's reluctance to let her go isn't Lilly's only obstacle. As she's trying to outrun a snowstorm, her car skids on the icy road and strikes a man. She recognizes the injured man as Ben Tierney, whom she'd met the previous summer. They're forced to wait out the storm in the cabin, but as the hours of their confinement mount, Lilly begins to wonder if the greatest danger to her safety isn't the blizzard outside, but the mysterious man right beside her. Is Ben Tierney the feared abductor? Or is he who he claims to be...her rescuer from harm and from the tragedy that haunts her?

                          4 out of 5 stars excellent thriller.......2007-10-09

This book has more curves than Heddy Lamarr.

From the opening, where one of our characters is grimly surveying the graves of 5 missing women, to the take-down of the killer, this small-town soap opera doesn't miss a trick. There's sex, violence, drugs, and yet somehow, it still manages to have a wholesome veneer.

The characters are all over the board, and the author does a good job of keeping you guessing about who's good and who's not so good. The only character that you're pretty sure is good the whole book through is a woman who is not well liked by the town.

In the end, the only detraction from this book for me was the lack of wholesome male characters. Every one of them had a major flaw. That's a Lifetime Movie Network trick that I'm not a fan of. But the story was wicked enough to carry it.

5 out of 5 stars Kept me guessing.......2007-08-15

This was my first Sandra Brown, but cant wait to get another one. This murder mystery kept me on edge and continually guessing. The characters are well woven and have plenty of deep issues going on. I read this at the beach in about 24 hours and would reccomend it to anyone who like a good suspense.

4 out of 5 stars A nice thriller that keeps you guessing. .......2007-08-11

Most books choose an obvious person to be the "killer". In this book I loved it because several people were on my list of killers and I was still wrong. I'm not normally wrong either. It kept me guessing and gave nice back stories on each character as they all seemed to go into crisis at the same time. Great layout and details. Very well developed without loosing intrest. There is several sex scenes though, pretty graphic and not needed. I didn't need to read about their whole experience but besides a few pages of that its a cleverly written book and the first book I've read by this author.

                          5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-08-01

I picked up this book not really knowing what it was about. After reading it, I can say that this is an excellent book. In fact, I had to read during lunch hours because I couldn't put it down. This is my first Sandra Brown book, and I can say that I will be looking forward to her books in the future.

5 out of 5 stars All purpose thriller.......2007-07-03

In recent years, I thought Sandra Brown had lost her edge. And I am not talking about those syrupy romance novels of the past (you know the ones I'm talking about, ladies! The ones you keep stuffed under your mattress because you're too embarrassed to admit that you read trash like that even to your closest of friends.) She found her nitch and commercial success with writing thrillers rather than her past work. Her last few books, however, lacked a certain something. Not because her writing was poor, but because I felt like I could anticipate her every move and thought. Like a lot of things, as I felt that I knew her writing, it had become predictable. This one, however, surprised me with their plot twists.

A small town nestled in the mountains in North Carolina is experiencing a snowstorm, and everyone within is bracing themselves for a white out. In the mountains, Lilly and Dutch are cleaning out the last of the items in their cabin and saying their final good-byes as their divorce has just been finalized. Lilly lingers for a while longer while Dutch starts back down the mountain; and, as she attempts to make it through the snow, she runs right into a man she had met a few years ago named Ben Teirney. Injured, she takes him back to the cabin for shelter. Meanwhile back in town, Dutch is worried about Lilly's return while we meet the cast of characters of their hometown. Wes the vain, arrogant coach who is grooming his reluctant son, Scott, to be the superior athlete (a la a few university football team scandals in recent years). The nasty, birdlike man who works at the town pharmacy, his schoolmarm sister, Wes's mother Dora attempting to keep the peace at home with her husband's increasingly unreasonable demands and her son's odd moods. And, some FBI agents came to town. As there seems to be some missing persons cases in recent months. A mysterious killer nicknamed Blue (for the blue ribbons that are left at the scenes where the victims were last seen) has made off with a few women and young girls in town.

Though Lilly and Tierney trapped in the cabin is the crux of the story, I found myself more fascinated with what the secondary characters were doing. How far will Wes go to make his son Scott the star he always dreamed of him to be? How will Dora, his patient but suffering wife, put up with this? That aweful, AWEFUL man William in the pharmacy is just so annoying you know something will happen. His old maid sister Marilee is living under his harsh tongue, but who is the beautiful stranger she's having this secret affair with? This is much more interesting than what's going on in the cabin.

This one kept me on the edge of my seat. How well do you really know your neighbors? There are a lot of dirty little secrets that they're all keeping, in typical small town fashion. Just when I thought I had it figured out, a new and genuinly surprising twist arose. There is a lot under the surface with all these people. A good thriller, and it all takes place within a 48 hour period. A good read.
