    Book Description

This book presents models written as partial differential equations and originating from various questions in population biology, such as physiologically structured equations, adaptive dynamics, and bacterial movement. Its purpose is to derive appropriate mathematical tools and qualitative properties of the solutions (long time behavior, concentration phenomena, asymptotic behavior, regularizing effects, blow-up or dispersion). Original mathematical methods described are, among others, the generalized relative entropy method - a unique method to tackle most of the problems in population biology, the description of Dirac concentration effects using a new type of Hamilton-Jacobi equations, and a general point of view on chemotaxis including various scales of description leading to kinetic, parabolic or hyperbolic equations.

      Product Description

This is a ARMY RESEARCH LAB ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND MD HUMAN RESEARCH AND ENGINEERINGDIRECTORATE report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A123163. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: A methodology for quantifying Army rotary wing aviator performance as influenced by aircrew life support, survival, and nuclear-biological-chemical clothing and equipment ensembles was examined in a set of expimental trials conducted in an AH-64 (Apache) combat mission simulator. The methodology was based on an aircrew evaluation procedure originally developed for use in the crew coordination training of all Army aviators. It uses a set of 13 basic qualities, each with behavioral anchors and a 7-point rating scale, and it is administered by specifically trained senior aviator evaluators. Ten crews, two aviators in each, while fully encumbered, performed three combat missions for record, representative of typical operational tasks, with one "variation" trial conducted without the over-water components of the ensemble. Measures of effectiveness and flight data, as well as stress assessment and equipment "complaints" citations, were recorded. The results indicated that the behavior- anchored scores were not sensitive enough to statistically discriminate among the independent variables of repeated measures and the variation trials even though graphically, differences were readily apparent. Attempts to apply transformations to the data, based on the aviator subjects' relative flying experience and their apparent accommodation to the trials were also statistically unsuccessful. The additional measures collected did not yield statistically significant discriminations nor did they correlate well with the evaluation score.

          Book Description

Until recently the description of environmentally directed behavior had been at the phenomenological level. However, over the past decade, the mechanisms of movement, environmental sensing, and sensory transduction are being understood at the molecular level in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic single-celled organisms. This book covers the entire range of single-cell sensory transduction, from theories of gradient perception in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells to the detailed molecular structure and function of sensory receptors, their respective secondary messengers, and the mechanisms of movement. The authors have also attempted to put the complex mechanisms of sensory transduction into the context of the organisms in their natural environment.

This is a ARMY AEROMEDICAL RESEARCH LAB FORT RUCKER AL report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A241134. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Airborne operations regularly expose paratroopers to risk of head impact. Even relatively mild head impacts, while not life threatening, can cause short-term impairment from dizziness, headaches, memory loss, lack of ability to concentrate, and irritation. There may also be a cumulative traumatic brain injury (TBI) effect from repetitive head impacts compounding the sequelae. Given the necessity for speed and aggressiveness in the airborne operational environment, these symptoms become militarily significant, no matter how temporary, by jeopardizing soldier survivability and the success of the unit's mission. There is an obvious need to protect the soldier in these environments and reduce the head injury rate to a minimum. This test report provides the results of comparative laboratory assessments of seven candidate head protection systems compatible with the airborne configuration of the existing ballistic protective helmet, commonly known as the PASGT (Personnel Armor System for Ground Troops).

                    Book Description

How do white blood cells identify and move to fight invading microorganisms? How do metastatic cancer cells find their target organ? How are sperm cells guided to the egg to fertilize it? How do unicellular organisms find food and avoid noxious substances? By chemotaxis is the common answer to all these questions. Chemotaxis — the response of cells to chemical stimuli by directed movement — is one of the most basic and fascinating processes in nature, involved in both health and disease.

This is the first and only textbook and sourcebook on chemotaxis. The authors demonstrate how basic chemotaxis is to life and how widespread it is, and presents the state of the art with respect to its molecular and physiological mechanisms. Because chemotaxis research is still in progress, the book also indicates open questions and future directions of research. In addition, potential applications to health problems are pointed out.

From the classic work of Darwin to current developments in such fields as psychology and economics, evolutionary biology is an increasingly powerful tool for understanding the natural world. Here in two volumes is a comprehensive, accessible, and authoritative guide to what we know about evolutionary biology, from the origins of species to the selfish gene and beyond. The Encyclopedia of Evolution covers the essentials of evolutionary biology in 370 original articles written by leading experts. The articles cover basic concepts and theories; models, methods, and findings; schools of thought; current controversies; biographies; and more. The Encyclopedia covers evolutionary thought in genetics, animal behavior, and every area of the life sciences, as well as in anthropology, psychology, linguistics, sociology, economics, medicine, philosophy, and other fields. There are hundreds of tables, charts, grtaphs, maps and other illustrations, bibliographies, cross-references and index. Designed for students and teachers in both high schools and colleges and universities, and scholars and scientists in the natural and social sciences, the Encyclopedia of Evolution will be the first point of access to this growing body of knowledge.

                              Book Description

The main theme of the book is focused on the intimate connection between two families of exactly solvable models: the inverse-square (ISE) and the nearest-neighbor exchange (NNE) models. The NNE models are Bethe-Ansatz solvable and include the Heisenberg spin chain, t-J models and Hubbard models. The ISE Calogero-Sutherland family of models are simple to solve and contain essentially the same physics as the NNE family. The author introduces and discusses current topics, such as the Luttinger liquid concept, fractional statistics, and spin-charge separation, in the context of the explicit models.

                                            Book Description

This book is suitable to be used as a text in introducing graduate courses or advanced undergraduate courses on the equilibrium statistical mechanics of bulk phases, interfaces, thin films and associations colloids. Emphasis is placed on exactly solvable models or physically motivated approximate theories that offer revealing insights into the molecular origins of the behaviour of materials in equilibrium. Also emphasized are theoretically motivated semiempirical models that can be used in quantitative predictions of phase and interfacial behavior. The book is unique in its unified approach to the theory of phases and their interfaces and on the density functional theory that unification is based on.

5 out of 5 stars WONDERFUL "FEEL GOOD" BOOK!.......2006-04-26

First the good: This is one of the best books I have ever read! It is cute, funny and written in a way that will appeal to children as well as fun-at-heart grown ups.

I HATE epics - I have no time for them - but this is a book that covers decades but doesn't get bogged down. An Epic that doesn't read like an epic.

Now the bad, and for me it was bad indeed. The book ain't perfect. There are a few small places it drags and one or two that seem to me to be rushed in as an after-thought. These can be forgiven though.

                                            On the other hand...

Mr. Foster came up with a great concept, wonderful plot, amazing characters and ... after taking the reader through them he then - in my opinion - hangs it all on a meathook in the final chapter! I won't give away the ending except to say that *I* hated it to the point of actually RIPPING OUT the last several pages and letting the book sit there on my shelf for a few months to let the memory dim. Since then I have read it many times and went away feeling lighter in soul for it.

A feel good book that is worth the price 10X over, though I advice to stop a few pages before the end. :)

5 out of 5 stars Like living somewhere else.......2005-05-20

I transcended the everyday place I live to join the Quozl community and learned so much I believed I was an explorer by the end. Liked the story. Imaginative and recommend if you want to take a quick trip away for awhile. Could prove to be a good vacation.

3 out of 5 stars One hundred pages too long.......2004-06-16

Quozl is at least 100 pages too long. The plot doesn't really start until page 100. This first hundred drags along as combination of hippies in space and Watership Down. There are pages and pages and pages and pages of idiotic descriptions of their sandles, their earings, their grooming habbits, to the point of mind numbing boredom.

So future readers, just skip to page 101. Once Runs-red-Talking meets Chad the story finally picks up but it's no where as interesting or compelling as Foster's much shorter and better written Nor Crystal Tears (which I highly recommend).

                                            1 out of 5 stars Enormously bad........2004-01-23

Okay. In two words, "It sucked." In about eighty-five words, "A depressingly simplistic plot with its flesh stretched achingly taut by unengaging filler. Characters that are difficult to remember, much less care about, from page to page, much less from chapter to chapter. No interesting twists that aren't forced and eye-rollingly predictable. No depth. And it doesn't save itself by being written well. This book is written with the same textureless and highly pretentious style of prose as the first-try novelette produced by a freshman in High School who tells everyone he'll be a writer when he grows up."

5 out of 5 stars Humor and More.......2004-01-23

I found the story humorous. Further, the notion that the Quozl psychologists had determined much of their nature and thus ameliorated their natural tendencies is a significant point. And their species control gives them a hidden advantage (in a sense). Defining our own natures and adjusting for our own good might be something we should consider.
