I have been reading it to gain better insight into dislocation theory. I have found it very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!! Fundamental and beyond.......2004-06-10

It is very good for Graduate student working in the area of any kind of deformation behavior of materials. This book is very helpful for understanding from fundamental concepts to dislocations and the related phenomena.

4 out of 5 stars One of the classic texts on "The Concept of a Dislocation".......2000-07-31

This classic text is a complete treatise on the concept of dislocations and their interactions with various other defects in crystalline materials. The dislocation concept is built up using basic theory of linear elasticity (Part 1 of the text). Hence, this book is ideal for someone with an elaborate background in Mechanics/Elasticity and looking to extend their backgroud in Crystal Plasticity from a Materials Science perspective. Parts 2-4 of the book will be of particular interest, as they deal with substantial Materials Science issues important at the atomic/meso-scale level.

For a Materials Scientist, while Part I might prove to be a challenge, as the references might not be as helpful as one might like (the authors do confess to not being exhaustive in their literature survey), Part 2-4 would be particularly useful in developing a basic intuition in the various dislocation-based phenomena important for understanding the various structure-property relationships that exist in crystalline materials.

    Book Description

This classic text of elementary dislocation theory has been reprinted to fulfill persistent demand. Because it approaches elementary dislocation theory from its most basic level, the material contained in the volume is as up-to-date as when it was first published. The text addresses many aspects of dislocation theory, including the nature of dislocations, Burgers vectors, motion and its impact on dislocations, internal stresses of dislocations, and multiplication of dislocations. The topics of this text are fundamental to the theory of dislocation behavior. Because dislocation is now widely recognized as a key factor determining the behavior of crystalline solids, specialists in electronics materials, as well as fracture mechanics, and materials science and engineering should have a solid grounding in this field. A large number of problems is provided in the text.

      Book Description

The author applies methods of nonlinear elasticity to investigate the defects in the crystal structure of solids such as dislocations and disclinations that characterize the plastic and strength properties of many materials. Contrary to the geometrically motivated nonlinear theory of dislocations continuously distributed over the body, nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book, and in a form accessible to both students and researchers. The general theory of Volterra's dislocations in elastic media under large deformations is developed. A number of exact solutions are found. The nonlinear approach to investigating the isolated defects produces results that often differ qualitatively from those of the linear theory.

If you are a Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial Engineer, you will need this book somewhere down the road. I am currently in graduate studies, and virtually every professor in those three faculties has a well used copy. It is well written and very complete. I shopped around looking for a used copy, but most of them are used so often they're almost worn out.

        5 out of 5 stars An Essential.......2006-02-17

Good Undergraduate metallurgy books are hard to find, this one's an essential for any forging class and any metallurgist's bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Thorough and comprehensive.......2006-01-01

Metallurgy is one of the oldest established branches of materials science, and science in general. Yet many of the underlying principles, such as dislocation theory and plasticity, have only been explored within the last 100 years or so. As such, there is a wealth of information in metallurgy that one could learn. This book by G. Dieter is one of the better books to use to learn about metallurgy. Coming in at 800 pages even, this book is a thorough study of the principles behind mechanical metallurgy and is appropriate for both students in the field and practicing engineers. The book provides complete mathematical treatments of numerous subjects within mechanical metallurgy, including crystallography of defects, thermodynamics of plastic flow, kinetics, etc... The book is somewhat old-fashioned in that it leaves out more modern topics such as the use of computer simulations in metallurgy. Because of this, the book does not deserve 5 stars. But due to its breadth and coverage of other topics, it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars Un excelente libro que todo metalurgista debe tener.......2004-05-08

Este es un excelente libro que incluye la teoria basica de mecanica asi como un resumen de la teoria de dislocaciones esto como una introduccion a los procesos de deformacion. Excelente libro....

5 out of 5 stars The Bible of material science.......2000-10-12

This book covers the entire scope of mechanical behavior in a single volume! How Dieter accomplished his, I can't imagine. But he did.

He covers everything, from the fundamentals of strees and strain, through dislocation theory, basic deformation and fracture, and the whole scope of metal-forming operations. If you need it, it's in this book.

        Two complaints:

        1) There is relatively little coverage of computer modeling, FEM, etc. These are the future of engineering, and Dieter needs to get on the boat when (if) he writes a fourth edition.

        2) The index is USELESS.

These two faults don't change the fact that this is one of he most important single books ever written in the field of material science.

                  Book Description

"Legend is overdue for replacement, and an adequate replacement must attend to the process of science as carefully as Hull has done. I share his vision of a serious account of the social and intellectual dynamics of science that will avoid both the rosy blur of Legend and the facile charms of relativism. . . . Because of [Hull's] deep concern with the ways in which research is actually done, Science as a Process begins an important project in the study of science. It is one of a distinguished series of books, which Hull himself edits."—Philip Kitcher, Nature

"In Science as a Process, [David Hull] argues that the tension between cooperation and competition is exactly what makes science so successful. . . . Hull takes an unusual approach to his subject. He applies the rules of evolution in nature to the evolution of science, arguing that the same kinds of forces responsible for shaping the rise and demise of species also act on the development of scientific ideas."—Natalie Angier, New York Times Book Review

"By far the most professional and thorough case in favour of an evolutionary philosophy of science ever to have been made. It contains excellent short histories of evolutionary biology and of systematics (the science of classifying living things); an important and original account of modern systematic controversy; a counter-attack against the philosophical critics of evolutionary philosophy; social-psychological evidence, collected by Hull himself, to show that science does have the character demanded by his philosophy; and a philosophical analysis of evolution which is general enough to apply to both biological and historical change."—Mark Ridley, Times Literary Supplement

"Hull is primarily interested in how social interactions within the scientific community can help or hinder the process by which new theories and techniques get accepted. . . . The claim that science is a process for selecting out the best new ideas is not a new one, but Hull tells us exactly how scientists go about it, and he is prepared to accept that at least to some extent, the social activities of the scientists promoting a new idea can affect its chances of being accepted."—Peter J. Bowler, Archives of Natural History

"I have been doing philosophy of science now for twenty-five years, and whilst I would never have claimed that I knew everything, I felt that I had a really good handle on the nature of science, Again and again, Hull was able to show me just how incomplete my understanding was. . . . Moreover, [Science as a Process] is one of the most compulsively readable books that I have ever encountered."—Michael Ruse, Biology and Philosophy

                  4 out of 5 stars Frustrating.......2006-07-20

Although it is a good read, this is one of those books whose sum is less than its parts. Hull presents a very nice account of the various turns in the historical development of evolutionary theory. There is an especially good description of the different schools of taxonomy (how organisms are classified). We also get a blow-by-blow account of the struggle for ascendancy between the pheneticists and the cladists, with lots of juicy, insider detail about the personalities involved, including some well-known figures in evolutionary biology. This is all in the service of an argument in favor of a generalized selectionist account of conceptual change in science, which uses Hull's useful and clarifying terminology of replicators and interactors. (It was especially clarifying for Dawkins.) There is much wise and insightful commentary, and many interesting tidbits, about science and the philosophy of science sprinkled throughout the book.

But in terms of the book's overall argument, it doesn't seem we end up with all that much after 500 pages of text. I found myself a bit worn down and more than a bit frustrated by then. Yes, scientific change can be seen as a selection process with much in common with natural selection in biology. But the questions that conclusion suggests for future research (e.g., "Does science develop more quickly in areas characterized by competing factions than in areas where scientists work largely alone?") don't seem very exciting or novel, nor do they seem to require Hull's selectionist framework. I'm reminded of systems theory, where once you point out that interdependent things can often be viewed as elements of a system, nothing much of interest seems to follow. Similarly, memetics and viral theories of information spread involve an interesting insight, but where is the yield?

Hull spends a lot of time on the details of how articles end up published or rejected by journals, much less on the processes by which research grants are given out. His subjects worked in museums and other environments where outside financial support apparently was not critical; but that is hardly characteristic of most areas of science today, where whole labs float on soft money and the scramble for research dollars is intense. One has to wonder, too, about the extent to which his conclusions based on "small science" would hold for the kind of big-money science done in the pharmaceutical industry or where scientists themselves become entrepreneurs, such as we see today in genomics and the high-payoff areas of molecular biology generally. There is something slightly quaint about his taxonomists sniping at each other over control of their conference agendas.

For a much more succinct account of Hull's selectionist model, I'd recommend his later book, "Science and Selection: Essays on Biological Evolution and the Philosophy of Science" (2001).

                  5 out of 5 stars A must-read book for anyone.......1999-07-13

The people thinks that the science is only for scientist. Nothing's far from that. In this book we can learn how the science involves people and their relationships, personal or not. Some parts of the book are funny, some are amazing. Did you already read "On the origin....", it does not matter, read the Hull's book!, and then any "about-evolution-book" you want, you'll read with other mind.

                        Book Description

In 1905, Albert Einstein published five scientific articles that fundamentally changed the world-view of physics: The Special Theory of Reativity revolutionized our concept of space and time, E=mc² became the best-known equation in physics.
On the occasion of the 100th aniversary of Einstein's "annus mirabilis" 1905, the UNESCO declared the year 2005 the "World Year of Physics", in order to draw attention to the impact of physics. The Max Planck Institute for the History of Science dedicates an exhibition to the easily most important scientist of the 20th century.
The exhibition is accompanied by a two-volume catalogue . The elaborate, four-colour first volume (Albert Einstein - Chief Engineer of the Universe: Einstein's Life and Work in Context) mirrors the structure of the exhibition, containing detailed, easy-to-understand information on the three large exhibition areas
                        - World-view and discovery
                        - Einstein - his life
                        - Einstein's world today.
On the basis of Einstein's innovative theoretical work, the text explains changing historical world-views as well as the conditions under which science develops, shedding light on the bumpy path of Einstein's life and the political and social revolutions which formed its background. This bridge between scientific and cultural history opens up a perspective on Einstein's biography which goes far beyond the traditional picture of this exceptional science genius.
The book concludes with a depiction of the effects of Einstein's work on today's science and culture. A DVD with animations and film sequences from the exhibition is enclosed.
The second volume is a bilingual collection of source material (Documents of a Life's Pathway/Dokumente eines Lebensweges). Letters and manuscripts by Einstein as well as photographs of people and objects are reproduced in high quality and invite the reader to study the exhibition's sources more intensively.

                        Book Description

Take a journey through American society and culture as youÂ've never seen it before, through the eyes of Angelina, a young Martian observer following in the footsteps of her predecessor of fifty years ago. After her predecessorÂ's departure, much has changed in our country. And Angelina faithfully observes and documents our quirky society as only an outsider looking in could. Lively and entertaining, DonÂ't Take Me to Your Leader will make you re-think the way you view our country and itÂ's laws, language, customs and leaders. Author Scotland Miles captures the imagination and pulls no punches when it comes to not only politics and the legal system; but marriage and money, trends and traditions, and the folly of some of our popularly held beliefs. Destined to be a classic in societal satire, DonÂ't Take Me to Your Leader compels all of us to question our own belief system, while entertaining us along the way. If youÂ've never experienced the joy of letting a book drop to your lap, staring off into space and saying to yourself, “You know, I never thought of it that way before,” be prepared with this one. Miles is part of the new breed of 21st century authors, breaking away from the pack. DonÂ't Take Me to Your Leader is fresh, funny and provocative.

                        5 out of 5 stars Must Read.......2003-05-25

I have to say I really enjoyed this book. It's hard to pull off social and cultural criticism without stepping on a few toes along the way, but Miles injects his writing with the right mix of humor and satire to make for a thoroughly enjoyable romp through today's society. Actually, "thoroughly enjoyable" is just a pleasant side affect. After turning the last page, I can honestly say this book has influenced me and the way I see things more than anything I've read in the past 20 years. What a "sleeper"! I highly recommend it to anyone.

                        5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!.......2003-05-03

If you enjoy satire, don't miss this one. Incredibly clever and insightful, this book will have you reading and laughing and reading and laughing some more. But the book is good for more than it's many laughs. It is a compendium of satire of society's traditions, habits and belief systems. There is a serious message; and that message is what on this earth makes sense and what doesn't. It makes you wonder, will our planet ever get any better. Oh, if your legislators would only read this book. Highly recommended.

A refreshing look at the American way of life by an entity from another planet. The writing style is refreshingly thought-provoking and humorous. It covered all our human bases.
