The French Paracelsians: The Chemical Challenge to Medical and Scientific Tradition in Early Modern France

The far-reaching debates arising from the development of chemistry and its application to medicine during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries are the subjects of this book. Shortly after the medical authority of Galen had been reestablished in the Renaissance, the Swiss-German firebrand, Paracelsus, proposed a new approach to natural philosophy and medicine utilizing chemistry. The resulting arguments between Paracelsians and Galenists lasted for more than a century and affected the medical establishments of every European country. In France, the confrontation was particularly bitter, with the Medical Faculty in Paris determined to block the introduction of chemistry to medicine in any field. The author discusses these issues not only with respect to pharmaceutical chemistry and the chemical cosmology of the Paracelsians, but also the development of chemical physiology and its struggle with the brand of medicine influenced by the mechanical philosophy of the seventeenth century. The academic acceptance of chemistry is revealed, and the triumph of the mechanists in the scientific academies is shown to have been only partial at best, because the learned journals of the early eighteenth century continued to review large numbers of books inspired by medical chemistry. This persistent interest in medical chemistry is shown to be significant to the Chemical Revolution and an aspect of the Scientific Revolution that deserves recognition by historians.

Disappointing edition...but a classic nonetheless!.......2000-04-04

As this book illustrates, there is no doubting the significance of Peter and Rosemary Grant's contributions to the field of evolutionary biology. The new edition is an instant "must have" for all current students of evolutionary biology by virtue of being a reprint of a genuine classic in the field. However, I was extremely disappointed to find the Grant's research of the intervening years between editions to be only briefly and incompletely addressed in the afterward. The more recent research of Peter Grant and colleagues is as interesting and significant as the earlier work covered in the first edition and deserved to be either fully incorporated into the original chapters or addressed as an entirely new series of chapters. One can only hope that the insufficient treatment of the last 14 years of research is a consequence of the Grants being hard at work on Ecology and Evolution of Darwin's Finches Volume 2!

Ralph, Conversations With A Bear.......2004-01-21

Oh No !!! This is not your typical talking bear story. Pete Merrill's, Ralph B. Shakesbear's pointed , often tongue in cheek, take on life is a delight. Ralph's literary background, mostly Shakespeare, colors his view and speech. His wry comments on the myriad woes of modern life : personal, social, environmental, and political are delivered with sage, though often sardonic, beery eyed, bear wisdom. ( 1800 comments according to Merrill )

Those of us lucky to have called Ralph's Olympic Peninsula or any part of rural America home, will relate to Ralph's, and his computer literate great grandson Mac Duff's plight: coping with change. We have grown accustomed to our slow, steady pace . We, too, have referred to "the new place up on the hill", though it may have been there twenty years. We have shuddered at the rumble of bulldozers heralding the encroachment of civilization. We have trampled through the underbrush, picked the berries, and climbed UP those hills where Ralph lives. Pete battles them all as he honors his frequent appointments with Ralph. Pete, a true friend, often packs the bear requested six pack of beer.

Pete Merrill's difficulties , which he endures after agreeing to share Ralph's comments with unsuspecting highway travelers via his hand printed signs, reminds us that the promise and responsibility of friendship is not always easy, but well worth keeping. The world needs more honorable Petes, and observant, outspoken Ralphs.

I laughed, cried, and groaned aloud as I read Ralph, Conversations With A Bear. I wish Ralph, MacDuff, and Pete well. This is a wonderful, satisfying read, one you will enjoy and wish to share with friends.

As preposterous as it might seem, the author of Ralph: Conversations with a Bear has met a talking bear in the woods behind his home in rural western Washington State and by the time you've finished his book you've suspended disbelief and have resolved to head for Belfair to talk to the cranky old fella yourself! For years motorists on the south shore of Hood Canal hve been amused by a large bear who sits comfortably in a red chair alongside a state highway holding a sign with a regularly changing message. While passersby quickly learned that the bear's name was Ralph, that he was up-to-date on current events and had an opinion about everything, until Merrill wrote his imaginative and entertaining story few realized that the woodcarving that they saw at the roadside was a replica of the real thing. There actually is a "Ralph" who is an English-speaking, Shakespeare-quoting, beer-guzzling, termite-eating black bear who found the author searching for wild blackberries on the hill behind his house and took him under his wing--or is it the other way around?

Ralph: Conversations with a Bear is an engaging tale of an unlikely friendship between man and bruin. As the story unfolds we are introduced to an assortment of characters that also live in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains including Ralph's enterprising great-grandson MacDuff Shakesbear, a naturalist named Oddware B. Stumple, and the local sheriff. Merrill's very funny tale provides insight into many of the issues that surface as rural areas succumb to development and pokes gentle fun at environmentalists, bureaucrats, old men, bears--there doesn't appear to be anything that Ralph isn't prepared to talk about. As Ralph says, "Everything hasn't been said yet. I'll let you know when that happens."

I loved Ralph and his homo sapien, Pete, and think you will too. I had tears in my eyes as MacDuff said goodbye to his friend with a quote from Shakespeare and on many occasions since have found myself wondering what the bears are doing now.

To quote Purple Lips Bartley, a bear who considers Ralph to be a windbag and who never liked him much: "This is hard-hitting flux de bouche....tells the Bear story like it really is....riveting. Merrill has set the standard by which all future Bear stuff must be measured. Two thumbs up!"
