5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT.......2002-11-24

This was a very clearly written and insightful book. It was well researched and presented in an appealing format in layman's terms. He described the essence of flavors, perfumes, and other good chemicals. The best book on the importance of chemistry in everyday life that I've read.

5 out of 5 stars This ought to be required reading!.......2002-07-15

It is definetely too bad that this book is not still in print for the public to buy! I'm 18 years old and love science, but you don't really have to be a science whiz to understand it.
What I believe is so great about this book is that it exposes the fallacies in the beliefs people have about certain chemicals, from sugar (and artifical sweeteners), cholesterol, fats, and fiber, painkillers (and other medications), PVC, dioxins, and carbon dioxide (global warming). People are misinformed by the media and even medical sources as to the dangers of these things, when many of these things are actually good for us!
This book was written from a logical viewpoint. John Emsley, who is a great author, discusses both sides of a topic, and really just makes the book interesting.
I believe it should be required reading in high school because then so many kids would be exposed to the fallacies that the media puts out about everything from sugar (It's not bad!) to body health. We as Americans believe so many things blindly without realizing the actual scientific proof. This books is great!

    Book Description

Chemistry is a conceptual subject and, in order to explain many of the concepts, teachers use models to describe the microscopic world and relate it to the macroscopic properties of matter. This can lead to problems, as a student's every-day experiences of the world and use of language can contradict the ideas put forward in chemical science. These titles have been designed to help tackle this issue of misconceptions. Part 1 deals with the theory, by including information on some of the key alternative conceptions that have been uncovered by research; ideas about a variety of teaching approaches that may prevent students acquiring some common alternative conceptions; and general ideas for assisting students with the development of appropriate scientific conceptions. Part 2 provides strategies for dealing with some of the misconceptions that students have, by including ready to use classroom resources including copies of probes that can be used to identify ideas held by students; some specific exercises aimed at challenging some of the alternative ideas; and classroom activities that will help students to construct the chemical concepts required by the curriculum. Used together, these two books will provide a good theoretical underpinning of the fundamentals of chemistry. Trialled in schools throughout the UK, they are suitable for teaching ages 11-18.

1 out of 5 stars Very unfair treatment of a serious illness.......2006-05-07

As many reviewers have already said, this book is extremely unhelpful to those who suffer from chemical injuries or EI. I am personally familiar with several of these, and know from personal experience the frustration and suffering this can cause. To argue that this is a psychogenic illness just makes it more frustrating to those who need real research and medical solutions. This book attempts to stand in the way of progress, and hopefully most people will not buy its bogus arguments. Please see, for example, Pamela Gibson's Multiple Chemical Sensititives: A Survivor's Guide, for summaries of some of the reserach. The Baylor College of Medicine also has a nice discussion of the illness on its website, with suggestions for support workers. I can't believe the Barrett-Gots book is even still in print.

1 out of 5 stars Chemical Sensitivity Has Already Been Objectively Identified by Medical Science .......2006-04-13

Mainstream medical science has already identified numerous chemicals as Sensitizers, while ones it has identified as Irritants. Case-specific & medically accepted forms of Chemical Sensitivity include Chemical Worker's Lung (a subset of Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis), Irritant-induced Asthma, Reactive Airways Dysfunction Syndrome, Irritant Rhinitis, Irritant-associated Vocal Cord Dysfunction, and Airborne Irritant Contact Dermatitis.

Chemical-specific forms include Formaldehyde Sensitivity, Glutaraldehyde Sensitivity, Cinnamic Aldehyde Sensitivity, Oil of Turpentine Allergy, Methyltetrahydrophthalic Anhydride Allergy, IgE-mediated Triethanolamine Sensitivity, Ammonium Persulfate Sensitivity, Methacrylate Sensitivity, Plicatic Acid (Red Cedar) Sensitivity, Sulfite Hypersensitivity, and numerous other ones.

Nontoxic/ambient benzene exposure has resulted in cases of hematotoxicity, while a number of chemicals, at nontoxic levels, have triggered anaphylaxis.

Objective medical findings in the chemically sensitive have included turbinate hypertrophy, nasal & laryngeal erythema, objective skin whealing resulting from skin testing, glandular hyperplasia, paradoxical adduction of the true vocal cords, urticaria, bronchial hyperresponsiveness in inhalation challenge testing, and other ones.

The AMA, in Report 4 of the Council on Scientific Affairs (A-98), has acknowledged as asthma triggers, "volatile organic compounds from carpeting, cabinetry, plywood, particle board, and fumes from household cleaning products", among other ones. The AAAAI has acknowledged "chemicals in the air", "household cleansers", and "paints or varnishes" as asthma triggers, among other ones. And the American Lung Association included in its list of asthma triggers "room deodorizers, cleaning chemicals, paints," and "hair spray".

Any literature on chemical sensitivity that does not include mention of these facts is, at the very least, an irresponsibly produced piece of literature. Such literautre can have an extremely deceptive effect.

Furthermore, the reading public has the right to know that Stephen Barrett, M.D. was never board certified at anything at any time in his life, being that he failed his board exams. He has no experience as a biochemist, no experience as a medical technologist, and no experience as a practitioner in any form of internal, dental, or dermatological medicine. In addition, Ronald Gots' association with the terms "insurance," "misrepresentation," and even "completely bogus operation" resulted from a now-defunct paper review company that he founded, in its services for the State Farm Insurance Company, along with an Oregon court case. The NBC television network was the entity which placed that matter in the public forum. And it did so years ago.

1 out of 5 stars Just the facts, please!.......2003-11-05

I find it very interesting that those who read the book and gave it a positive review could ignore the outright arrogance of the authors given that Gots isn't even in the field (see the reviews below). It reads like a child having a tantrum when he doesn't get his way. Speaking from a scientific background, I feel that it is necessary to look at both sides of the argument provided they are presented in a factual manner. The emotions conveyed in this book have without a doubt elicited the emotional responses from the readers.
I find it very disturbing that nowhere in this book does it mention that people are not designed to withstand chemical exposure. Chemicals are not a part of the natural environment! When unnatural elements are introduced into our environment, they cause problems. We've all seen it before. Remember when DDT was supposed to be "good for us"?
In short, I'll just say that if you are looking for a book to present information on MCS to you in a direct, un-tampered way, this book is not for you.

1 out of 5 stars Chemical industries attempt to silence chemically injured.......2003-03-15

Many large chemical companies such as DowElanco, Monsanto, Procter and Gamble, the Cosmetic Toiletries and Fragrances Association, and other companies and trade associations involved in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other chemicals, each pay $10,000 per year to keep the Environmental Sensitivities Research Institute(ESRI) going. The head of ESRI is Dr. Ronald Gots, who also runs something called the National Medical Advisory Group, which provides expert witnesses to defend the chemical corporations in tort lawsuits. Dr. Gots is a pharmacologist, not a toxicologist, with no formal training or certification in toxicology. Dr. Gots has not treated or seen patients of his own for 20 years and has never been the physician for a chemically sensitive person. He practiced medicine for only a few years before becoming a full time expert witness and consultant for the chemical industry and other corporations, and many times has testified against MCS patients. It is my understanding that Ronald Gots has also been charged with insurance fraud. I wouldn't be surprised if these large giant chemical companies are paying Dr. Gots for writing this book so they can keep on polluting the planet and causing diseases. More than 2 billion people have cancer alone not to mention the 50 plus autoimmune diseases such as diabetes, MS, Lupus etc. that are being linked to chemicals in the environment. What does that tell us about what the chemical industry is doing??

5 out of 5 stars This is an excellent review of the pertinent facts.......2001-10-28

(...) To say the least the rabid anti-book reviews listed here show far more about the political agenda of the reviewers than about a carefully reasoned and substantiated study of what is yet another anti-scientific rather silly "scare" of those people who see an evil business conspiracy under every bed (who needs Commies there anymore?). Wild eyed unsubstantiated claims of chemical industry ties are simply embarassing. Read the book and learn. That would be a new trick for most of these reviewers.

    Book Description

Environmental illness: certain health professionals and clinical ecologists claim it impacts and inhibits 15 percent of the population. Its afflicted are led to believe environmental illness (EI) originates with food, chemicals, and other stimuli in their surroundings -as advocates call for drastic measures to remedy the situation. What if relief proves elusive-and the patient is sent on a course of ongoing, costly and ineffective "treatment"? Several hundred individuals who believed they were suffering from EI have been evaluated or treated by Herman Staudenmayer since the 1970s. Staudenmayer believed the symptoms harming his patients actually had psychophysiological origins-based more in fear of a hostile world than any suspected toxins contained in the environment. Staudenmayer's years of research, clinical work-and successful care-are now summarized in Environmental Illness: Myth & Reality. Dismissing much of the information that has attempted to defend EI and its culture of victimization, Staudenmayer details the alternative diagnoses and treatments that have helped patients recognize their true conditions-and finally overcome them, often after years of prolonged suffering.

1 out of 5 stars Where is the truth in this book?.......2000-05-29

This book has all the makings of a person who has no concept of this illness. A man who hasn't the MEDICAL training to understand the systemic ramifications of toxic chemicals on the human system.

Mr. Staudenmayer is an independent consultant to the insurance industry and is using cigarette science to make up for his lack of knowledge and current research on this illness. More and more physicians are seeing that the human body is not able to process all the chemcials that they are in contact with in a normal day.

If these so called chemicals are safe, which he alludes to in his book, why is the government calling for MAJOR investigations on the safety of over 2000 chemicals by the year 2004?

Mr. Staudenmayer needs to learn to do research not reiterate publications of an industry that sponsors him.

I would NOT recommend this book to anyone, as the facts are not true, his alliance to the chemical industry precludes him from making an unbiased assessment of this illness.

1 out of 5 stars I Wish This Author Could Experience Environmental Illness........2000-04-29

This author wrote a book about something that he was determined to find does not exist except in the minds of those who are afflicted with it. He is right that there are a lot of charletans out there ready and willing to take your money but there is more to multiple chemical sensitivity than a mental predisposition to it. This author is in the dark ages and unfortunately, it will be years before the truth comes out. There is much money invested by the chemical, pesticide and building industries to keep the general public ignorant of the problems with many products and their connection to multiple chemical sensitivity, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue and asthma. If you are looking for a book that will help you with any of these conditions, this is not it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent synposis of current understanding of EI!.......1999-01-23

This book provides an authorative, well researched examination of the phenomena of environmental illness. It is a "must read" for anyone who has any interest in this area.

        Book Description

The remarkable achievements that modern science has made in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering contrast sharply with our limited knowledge of the human mind and behavior. A major reason for this slow progress, claims Gary Cziko, is that with few exceptions, behavioral and cognitive scientists continue to apply a Newtonian-inspired view of animate behavior as an organism's output determined by environmental input. This one-way cause-effect approach ignores the important findings of two major nineteenth-century biologists, French physiologist Claude Bernard and English naturalist Charles Darwin.

Approaching living organisms as purposeful systems that behave in order to control their perceptions of the external environment provides a new perspective for understanding what, why, and how living things, including humans, do what they do. Cziko examines in particular perceptual control theory, which has its roots in Bernard's work on the self-regulating nature of living organisms and in the work of engineers who developed the field of cybernetics during and after World War II. He also shows how our evolutionary past together with Darwinian processes currently occurring within our bodies, such as the evolution of new brain connections, provide insights into the immediate and ultimate causes of behavior.

Writing in an accessible style, Cziko shows how the lessons of Bernard and Darwin, updated with the best of current scientific knowledge, can provide solutions to certain long-standing theoretical and practical problems in behavioral science and enable us to develop new methods and topics for research.

I have only read about the first third of this book, so this review is only temporary. But if somebody stumbles into this page, then I want you know without delay that Gary Cziko is an authentically kind and intelligent researcher into the problem of what's going on with human behavior.

His book "Without Miracles" established his credibility with me. And I am extremely pleased to be able to benefit from his informed investigations into why I find myself doing things that otherwise mystify me.

Pointing me in the direction of internal reference levels has cleared away much of the fog that defied logical analysis with regard to examining the subject of motivating human purposes.

Thank you Gary!! I will flesh this review out when I finish reading your work.
