--Reflective learners make certain that they correctly pronounce, spell, and punctuate every word. Impulsive learners are less inhibited in speaking. There is something to be said for both styles.

--Left-brain learners look at every detail. Right-brain learners take an overall view. There is something to be said for both styles.

__It is better to learn a language out of genuine interest than merely to please an authority.

--Be self-confident. Be willing to risk making mistakes.

--Intelligence in other areas can be applied to learning a language.

--In order to learn correct pronunciation, listen carefully to native speakers.

--Make a serious effort to learn about the host culture.

--Learn the language through songs, poetry, puzzles, and Internet sites.

--Introverts prefer to study alone. Extraverts prefer to work in groups or converse in the second language. There are advantages of either style.

--Study and take tests efficiently.

If you had the patience to read through all these platitudes, then you know virtually everything in the book. The rest is mostly padding.

Tracing the development of population genetics through the writings of such luminaries as Darwin, Galton, Pearson, Fisher, Haldane, and Wright, William B. Provine sheds light on this complex field as well as its bearing on other branches of biology.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars A fine scholarly history.......2002-12-16

'Evolution', in its biological sense, is simply any change in the frequencies of genes over time. There has never, so far as I know, been any real argument over whether such evolution occurs. The fuss, certainly ever since 1859, has always been mainly about two things: _how_ it occurs (Does it happen solely by 'natural selection'? If so, by what mechanism(s)? Or does it happen at least partly by design?), and whether it's sufficient to provide a complete account of speciation (and sometimes the origin of life, though strictly speaking this point is not part of the theory of evolution itself).

Not that you'd know this from most public debate on the subject. If there's one topic guaranteed to generate letters to the editor written at a grade-school level or below from people who ought to know better (on _both_ sides), this is surely it.

Well, if everything you (think you) know about this debate comes from listening to somebody denounce it from the pulpit -- or for that matter from watching 'Inherit the Wind' and/or reading _The Selfish Gene_ -- then you really should educate yourself before sounding off about it. And one thing you'll want to learn is a little of the history of the subject.

William Provine's scholarly history of the science of population genetics, originally written in 1971, is a fine place to start. It covers the development of the field from the time of Darwin through the early twentieth century, the period during which the synthesis of Darwinian natural selection and Mendelian genetics was taking place.

You'll encounter some familiar names -- of course Darwin and Mendel, but also e.g. Thomas Henry Huxley, Sir Francis Galton, and J.B.S. Haldane. You'll also encounter a number of other names that probably won't be familiar to you unless you already know something about this field (or perhaps about statistics): William Bateson, Karl Pearson, Sir Ronald A. Fisher, and Sewall Wright, for example.

And mainly, you'll get a grasp of the way Darwin's theory and the new science of genetics dovetailed and reinforced one another in the synthesis of modern population genetics. If you don't believe in evolutiuon-by-natural-selection yourself, you'll at least begin to see why other people do and what's so intellectually attractive about it. And if you _do_ believe in it yourself, you'll get a healthy sense of the fact that it hasn't ever been a uniform, monolithic theory that left no room for any sort of argument.

It would be nice if everybody who felt entitled to an opinion in the evolution debate would read this book. Of course there are also lots of readers who don't need this warning; to them I simply say that this is a readable, well-researched history of its title topic.

                  Book Description

This Fourth Edition brings the reader up to date on gas technologies and equipment that have evolved since the Third Edition was published in 1990. It is both a comprehensive overview and a source reference for supplementary data on every aspect of handling gases in compressed, liquefied, and cryogenic forms. Properties, safety considerations, equipment, and regulations relevant to compressed gases are all addressed. The Fourth Edition gives information relating to current standards from the various standards developing organizations in the field, as well as the latest shipping requirements, storage and handling procedures and uses. The Fourth Edition of Handbook of Compressed Gases is the only compressed gas reference that combines gas-specific information on 66 compressed gases, including physical constants, handling, storage and transportation, and safety requirements as well as comprehensive, detailed information on valves and pressure relief devices, cylinder maintenance, bulk containers and transportation, and oxygen cleaning. The handbook has been reformatted to present information in a more ordered, logical sequence, using specific labeling and marking information to make the Fourth Edition even more useful than its predecessor. This new edition includes: The latest changes in DOT regulations (HM-206, HM-215A, HM-215B), Exposure limits set by ACGIH and OSHA which have been reviewed and updated, New developments in safety equipment, along with the latest training requirements to mitigate a compressed gas incident. Since this handbook is not product-specific, it contains coverage of gases across the spectrum of the industry - not just those produced by one manufacturer. It is a ready source of useful information on natural gases, refrigerants, medical gases, atmospheric gases, and equipment and systems for oxygen service. All professionals whose work includes the manufacture, handling, or use of gas will find the Fourth Edition of Handbook of Compressed Gases extremely valuable. It serves the needs of engineers, technicians, researchers, maintenance personnel, health specialists, transportation directors, purchasing agents, hazardous materials officials, and chemical handlers.

                    Book Description

This book gives a unique overview of principles associated with the characterization of solids with regard to their surface area, pore size and density. The book covers methods based on Gas Adsorption (Physi- and Chemisorption), Mercury Porosimetry and Pycnometry. Not only are the theoretical and experimental basics of these techniques described, but also the most recent developments, particularly in light of the tremendous progress made in recent years in Materials Science and Nanotechnology. The application of classical theories and methods for pore size analysis are discussed in contrast with the most advanced microscopic theories based on statistical mechanics (e.g. Density Functional Theory and Molecular Simulation). The book will appeal both to students and to scientists in industry who are in need of accurate and comprehensive pore and surface area characterization of their materials.

                    Book Description

Thin film deposition is a broad and burgeoning field, with applications ranging from razor blade coatings to quantum-well lasers. However, much of the available thin film literature is based on empirical knowledge, and focuses only on specific processes or applications. This volume rectifies that situation, offering a complete description od the theory and technology of thin film deposition. The book's broad perspective gives readers the tools to objectively evaluate and choose the appropriate thin film process for a specific application. This indispensable volume also includes a complete list of symbols and an extensive index.

                          Book Description

This book is devoted to interfaces between two fluids, that is, between a liquid and a gas (such as water and air) or between two liquids (such as water and oil). The main motivation for the book is twenty years of experimentation in the microgravity environment of space, and the associated theory. This unique environment has made possible numerous qualitative and quantitative observations of effects that are masked by gravity on earth. Large liquid surfaces have been created and their stability and dynamics have been studied. The experimental insights gained have, in turn, strongly stimulated further theoretical and mathematical investigations. Advancing and receding contact angles, wetting barriers, pinning of contact lines, oscillations of capillary surfaces and fluid sloshing are also discussed.

Dieter Langbein wrote one of the best approaches to capillary surfaces i've ever seen. I am an undergraduate student at UCF and Langbein's Capillary Surfaces is a wonderful piece of knowledge. The examples and descriptions quite possibly explain the reasons behind capillary rise. This text has served its purpose and beyond in terms of educating the reader. Langbein might as well call himself a genius because i see the future in capillary surfaces and its application. Read this book if you are extremely interested in the reasons of capillary surfaces, the shapes they undergo, stability, and dynamics. Moreover, weightlessness is a big treat for those who want to know the effects of space.

This is a must-read for women everywhere. If you want to know such things as how to calculate if your man is 100% in love with you, why he looks at other women, or how to spot an insensitive man in a crowd, among other things, you should give this one a read. After reading this book, you'll know how men think, from a man who seems to know what he's talking about. Charles Harry has laid it all out in the form of a fictional story featuring revealing conversations between two dynamic female characters. Once you get into it you won't want to put it down, so start this one early in the day.
