Very Informative.......2006-06-11
Strip away the fluff and leave it in the rough. The author reveals secrets of hundreds of inks, and he gets right to it. The book was bigger than I thought it would be. The only thing that is left to the imagination is exactly how you will get the materials needed. It is too bad this book is out of print, and Loompanics is out of business. You may get lucky like I did, and catch this title online at a reasonable price.

The mark of a craftsman is his familiarity with his tools, the speed with which he can use them to solve simple problems, and his cleverness in using them to solve more complicated challenges. The latest edition of Unix Power Tools explores the standard Unix tools in greater depth than ever, and with better coverage of Linux, FreeBSD, and even the Darwin environment of Mac OS X. It's also been improved by the addition of sections on Perl and Python, programming languages that can often solve Unix problems more adeptly than any specific utility. This detail-filled book distinguishes itself from other guides for Unix gurus with its organizational structure (it's a series of articles that can be absorbed sequentially or individually) and carefully designed and executed index. Like its esteemed predecessors, this book is one you will keep handy.
The authors have achieved a nearly ideal balance in the pages of this book. It's not just a collection of recipes (such collections tend to leave you hanging if you want to do something a little differently), it's not just a book of documentation (books like that have application mainly as references for people who know a lot already), and it's not just a conceptual how-to guide. Unix Power Tools is all of those things, and the overall effect is impressive indeed. If you work with any flavor of Unix, whatever your level of experience, you will benefit by having this book. --David Wall
Topics covered: How to work efficiently, elegantly, and creatively with the Unix tool suite, as well as (to a lesser extent) with Perl and Python scripts. Tips and strategies on customization, document generation, process management, and networking abound in this wisdom-rich volume.
Book Description
With the growing popularity of Linux and the advent of Darwin, Unix has metamorphosed into something new and exciting. No longer perceived as a difficult operating system, more and more users are discovering the advantages of Unix for the first time. But whether you are a newcomer or a Unix power user, you'll find yourself thumbing through the goldmine of information in the new edition of Unix Power Tools to add to your store of knowledge. Want to try something new? Check this book first, and you're sure to find a tip or trick that will prevent you from learning things the hard way. The latest edition of this best-selling favorite is loaded with advice about almost every aspect of Unix, covering all the new technologies that users need to know. In addition to vital information on Linux, Darwin, and BSD, Unix Power Tools 3rd Edition now offers more coverage of bash, zsh, and other new shells, along with discussions about modern utilities and applications. Several sections focus on security and Internet access. And there is a new chapter on access to Unix from Windows, addressing the heterogeneous nature of systems today. You'll also find expanded coverage of software installation and packaging, as well as basic information on Perl and Python. Unix Power Tools 3rd Edition is a browser's book...like a magazine that you don't read from start to finish, but leaf through repeatedly until you realize that you've read it all. Bursting with cross-references, interesting sidebars explore syntax or point out other directions for exploration, including relevant technical details that might not be immediately apparent. The book includes articles abstracted from other O'Reilly books, new information that highlights program tricks and gotchas, tips posted to the Net over the years, and other accumulated wisdom. Affectionately referred to by readers as "the" Unix book, UNIX Power Tools provides access to information every Unix user is going to need to know. It will help you think creatively about UNIX, and will help you get to the point where you can analyze your own problems. Your own solutions won't be far behind.
Customer Reviews:
What a Wonderful Book!.......2007-10-02
I've worked in IT for 20+ years, and this is one of the best books I've found. What an index! And even the text of the book has reference "pointers" (for lack of a better term) sprinkled throughout it. Even if you don't initially find what you are looking for, you can usually read a couple of paragraphs and find a link to what you need. This book is a "keeper!"
The UNIX bible!.......2007-05-13
Back in 1995 I started working at a client and all the UNIX guys had this book on their desk. I was a newbie at that time and the book helped me out a lot. It was clear and to the point. There is so much useful information. Recently I got my own copy because I had to jump back into the UNIX world and having this book around make me feel like I can handle any task that may be required. This is a must have if you want to dabble or become a pro in UNIX.
True to the Unix philosophy.......2007-05-12
Here is a quote taken from _Unix_Power_Tools_ which demonstrates the
attitude, shared by the authors, that unix allows you to make things
easier. "''Ugh!', you say, 'that's just what I hate about UNIX. All
these long filenames and options I can't remember. Who wants to type
all that stuff!' Precisely. That's why UNIX makes it so easy to
create custom commands, in the form of aliases and shell scripts."
Unix Power Tools is true to the spirit and philosophy of unix in
focusing on the command line environment with its rich abundance of
command interpreters, shell languages, system utilities, commands, and
the like. This is the realm of real power.
The book is aimed squarely at the user who wants to learn what's under
the hood of the unix (and Linux) system. It's not about how to change
your wallpaper or install the latest media player, or configure your
desktop, although this new edition may touch on these topics, too.
It's really about using unix to greatest advantage, about tapping its
real power, the power of its simplicity, of its flexibility, of
tapping into I/O streams, and using the tool-box approach to solving
real problems. It's about using 'pipes', 'redirection', and
'filters', to automate the big jobs.
My copy of this book is tattered from all the use it's had over the
last ten years. I'm always hunting it down, as my associates at work
are constantly borrowing it to help them solve a problem. That's
okay, though. I am ordering another copy, just for me. I'm curious
to see this new edition, which I understand has broader coverage of
the various unix flavors, including Linux, which I run
at home.
I would recommend this book to those who find unix intimidating, as
well as to the unix enthusiast. For anyone who ever wondered what the
fuss over unix was about, this book will certainly bring on an
epiphany. For between these covers is the greatest accumulation of
unix wisdom and know-how to be found in any book. The shear volume is
enough to elicit awe. But that's only part of its value, because such
an enormous accumulation of material might normally overwhelm the
reader, leaving him frustrated and unenlightened. Happily, this book
is so well organized, and the material so pleasingly presented, that
anyone will find it a pleasure to browse through and to mine
repeatedly for those precious tips, tricks, and methods that make
using unix so rewarding.
This is admittedly a pound heavy volume, and might be expected to
contain a lot of chaff with the grain. I have not found it so. The
authors have chosen the material well, and know their subject so
intimately and thoroughly, that I am left with a feeling of profound
respect. This is, in short, a book that is worthy of its subject; a
truly great book for a great OS.
I read another reviewer who avers this is the one book he would take
with him to a deserted island. I concur. It has taught me more than
any other unix book, and has made my work more efficient, and most
importantly, more interesting. I paid full retail for my copy of
Power Tools, and at the time, I thought it was a lot, but it has
repaid me many times over. It's the most indispensable unix book on
my shelf; a real gem.
pricey but worth it.......2006-06-23
I know this seems abit pricey but its worth it. I dont have the attention span needed to read most books cover-to-cover. Even though this book is huge I have browsed it all and read most of it. Multiple times! Each time I find some new tidbit to use.
The one unix book that I'd like to have if stranded all alone on an island with a linux system!!.......2006-05-01
I'm an analog IC designer moonlighting as a linux hacker (I'm actually addicted). I try to build software, write shell scripts and customize my desktop to death. I picked up this book a year or two back and I think I've probably used it almost every single day to look up something or the other. I probably own about 20 linux related books (more than my engineering books) but this is the one that I would run out with when the firealarm sounds. Here is my short summary of my feelings about this book.
- this book (primarily) caters to intermediate to advanced users
- I would still recommend this for linux beginners as a reference to check up when every other beginner book fails. There are introductory chapters on shell scripting which could put some of the dedicated shell scripting books to shame
- One of the fundamental holy grail that linux books try to achieve (and in which they often fail) is to find a good balance between breadth and depth - both qualities which the subject of Unix do not shy away from. So a Linux beginner picks up an introductory book which addresses just one linux issue and before he knows it-he has gathered enough knowledge and the book just picks up dust. Or he could pick up a book that claims to be a reference and skims over all the items with little depth and boom when he really needs information about a particular topic he finds that the book is too shallow. The "Unix Power Tools" book, I'm happy to say achieves this good balance between depth and breadth in very good measure. Ex. When I was confused about the intricacies of bash quoting or I/O redirecition, this book came to my rescue. The Unix command "find" which was buried under a 4-year old alias for me owing to it's complexities, suddenly developed a fascination for me after I discovered it's myriad use and value from the multiple pages that this book devoted to it's demystifcation.
- I bought the O'Reilly books - "Linux in a Nutshell" and "Essential system Administration" with the purpose of using them as references - The first one was just too shallow for my requirements and taste and I use it basically as a replacement for online man pages. The second one has it's very niche, but only in specific circumstances. So they have been put to use probably just 1/10th of what the "Power Tools" book has been put to
- I'm not a guy who is driven to write reviews i.e unless I am totally ecstatic or totally disgusted with a product and you probably have guessed where I stand with this one. I waited 1 or two years and I somehow felt that I owe this review to this book.

Great All-Around Guide for Motorcyclists.......2007-08-23
This book is a great resource for motorcyclists. It has history, skill development, and repair sections, and is incredibly handy as a reference book. I would definitely recommend this book for beginning to intermediate motorcyclists.
It really helps.......2007-07-15
I found out that this book really helped me find the bike of my dreams, and helpped me choose a style, type, acessories, and the right size of a bike for me. I believe that all riders need to read this to get started and even refresh themselves.
Great for the novice rider.......2007-07-11
I found this book to cover the surface of almost every aspect of motorcycling such as technique, about bikes, the biker community and bike maintenance. If you've attended an MSF course there is probably not going to be that much more in this book in terms of how to ride and what to be aware of.
For experienced riders, I don't think this book would benefit you unless you wanted a refresher on what to do in dangerous situations or riding technique.
real idiot.......2006-11-11
just as its name suggest, the book is for "complete idiot", the info spetrum is very broad. namely, the info. is general without necessarily in depth.
Okayish as an intro........2006-07-12
This book is okay as a general introduction to motorcycling if you're a total newbie and have absolutely no idea how to approach the sport. On the other hand, after reading it I didn't find that it had given me any great revelations. Added to this I felt there was far too much attention paid to Harleys, which whilst being beautiful bikes, I certainly would not recommend to a motorcycling beginner. The maintenance section is quite acceptable but doesn't offer much more than what you'd get out of an owner's manual with a bike. If you're looking for a guide to good riding techinques, I highly recommend 'Proficient Motorcycling' by D. Hough - an excellent and comprehensive guide to staying alive on your dream machine.
Book Description
In this enlarged and thoroughly revised third edition of his widely used text, Darwin Reid Payne explores the principles and philosophies that shape the visual elements of theatre.
Payne sets out to discover who scenographers are and to define their responsibilities. He sees scenographers as not merely craftspersons but artists with "a special vision that spans all the arts." Such artists are in a position to "extend and amplify underlying meanings of the production." The proper goal of beginning scenographers, according to Payne, is one day to be able to approach the job as artists in full command of their craft.
Payne seeks to instill in beginning scenographers a basic core of knowledge: an understanding of theatre history and the development of drama; a knowledge of art history and an understanding of periods and styles of architecture, painting, sculpture, furnishings, and costume; and a familiarity with the principles, techniques, and materials of pictorial and three-dimensional design. This new edition contains 248 illustrations, 38 more than the second edition. Payne’s goal, certainly, is to teach students what to do and how to do it; equally important, however, is Payne’s view that scenographers must know why.
To Payne, "Scenography is an art whose scope is nothing less than the whole world outside the theatre." Scenographers must read not only in their own field but in others as well. Payne has incorporated into his text many suggestions for outside readings, quoting passages and even entire chapters from important works. Stressing research, Payne argues that without knowledge of the literature of their own and related arts, scenographers cannot grow. And that is the emphasis of this book: to present aspiring scenographers with an approach and a set of concepts that will enable them to grow. Toward that end, Payne establishes five priorities, the first of which is to develop in students what he calls "time vision," or the ability to "see" the historical past as a living place with living inhabitants. The second priority is to bring about an awareness that allows students to "see" beneath the surface of objects and events. Third, students must be helped to recognize and appreciate the difference between the "concept of space as it exists outside the theatre and the concept of space as it is used within the theatre." The fourth priority is to ingrain in students an understanding of the importance of imagery to the scenographer, and the final priority is to teach those technical skills necessary to carry out the concepts of the scenographer.
Customer Reviews:
a wonderful book.......2006-10-30
This book shows not only how to make the scenography, but also makes you understand the philosophy of the scenography.

Nifty little guide.......2006-07-14
This was very helpful in providing a brief overview of the cities I was visiting. However, I like pictures so I can cross reference any of the historical sites I'm seeing.
Great book!.......2002-02-08
I found it to be a wealth of information before my trip and during.
Frommer's Denmark.......2001-07-28
Imagine moving to Denmark as a U.S. citizen and working for a Fortune 500 Firm. Now think of bringing your family here for a week of house hunting and 2 months of summer, while you complete your 9 month assignment. Now begin your research on books regarding Denmark. "Ah Frommer's has a new first edition!" "Okay I'll purchase it." The errors our family noted were- 1)on a cold day in February my daughter (14) and I walked to the Carlsburg Brewery (it was about 1 mile from our Radisson SAS Hotel in Fedricksburg) because it was open on Monday while the museums were closed (We'll make good use of our 9 day initial visit.) Frommer's was wrong, it is not open on Mondays. 2)Hey we are going to live in Denmark for the summer, let's plan on venturing to the Legoland, since we had children ages 4, 11 & 14 to entertain. Time to make the overnight accomodations for our visit to Legoland; okay, let's pull out the Frommer's. Read about Legoland, then contact the Legoland Hotel on site (the only hotel listed by Frommer's for the town of Billund). When we contacted the phone number listed for Legoland we reached not the Legoland Hotel but a travel agency! Hotel Legoland had no rooms available for the July dates we needed, however, they recommended a nearby hotel called Hotel Propellen. It turned out to be the nicest family suite our family has ever encountered. (2 large rooms (a bath with a 7ft. tub, 8ft. double sink, and a separate shower; bar; deck with wooden patio furniture). The hotel offered a kidde pool, large pool, sauna, tanning beds, dining rooms, outside dining, heart shaped whirlpools, exercise room, parking lot, walking trails, a playground for big kids and little kids (2)- with a large trampoline which was low lying, and an enormous breakfast buffet (with a child's play area in the breakfast area)that was included in our room price . This hotel was only 500m (a 3-5 minute walk to the Legoland entrance). Why hadn't Frommer's recommended it and why did they only list one Hotel for a resort that is as hugely attended as Disney World, Disney Land, and Sea World! 3)There was another error in Frommer's recommendatons but I forget what it was. I veiwed the rest of their information with caution and wondered what else might have been in error if they couldn't get these major attractions correct. The Danes are great with promoting their towns' and cities' attractions on colorful literature. The City of Copenhagen even promotes "Copenhagen This Week" complete with events, times and phone numbers. I found this free information more valuable and a greater breath of knowledge than "Frommer's Denmark". July 2001
Good for Trip Tips.......2000-07-06
It's a good guide for you that want some tips on what to see and visit. It could have more hotel options (including the inexpensive...)

Book Description
In the tradition of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Little Princess come Noel Streatfeild’s tales of triumph. In this story, three orphan girls vow to make a name for themselves and find their own special talents. With hard work, fame just may be in the stars! Originally published in 1937.
Customer Reviews:
the worst book I've ever read in my life! .......2007-02-28
This book is very confusing and mis leading. The author first went wrong with charicters with names like underware or perfume brands enough said. Please consider this reveiw and buy a different book please the last thing this book needs is five stars. :( ;( 8(
Differences are beautiful.......2007-02-23
What I love the most about this book is that it reminds all of us, especially young girls, that being different is beautiful and special. Some of us may be actors, others dancers, etc. In the end the most important thing is to follow our hearts. This is a great book for girls today- growing up in a time when the media continues to suggest that we should all "follow the crowd".
Favorite Childhood Book.......2006-06-21
This was my favorite book growing up; I read it over and over and over again. Whether it was because I was one of three sisters, or because I loved dancing, or simply because of the incredible world Streatfeild created, I don't know. I wanted to have the magical life that Pauline, Petrova, and Posy shared. This is a great read for any young girl, and might even be appreciated by not-so-young girls as well. I'm sure I'll keep rereading it throughout my life. I loved that it got the recognition it deserved in "You've Got Mail."
Also good: Children on the Top Floor. Not strictly a "shoe" book like the others, but just as good.
A wonderful and charming story!.......2006-04-04
I loved this book! It is the story of three orphans, Pauline, Petrova, and Posy, who are adopted by an older man who is gone during most of the book. After going through most of the money that he has left for their care until his return, the three sisters attend a special school of the arts. There they can learn to act, dance, and sing; then they can get jobs in different performances making money. Pauline falls in love with acting, Posy is a natural dancer, and poor Petrova would rather fix cars and learn to fly planes than be on stage. All the characters are wonderful and a joy to read about, the story is unique and charming. I simply didn't want it to end. The sisters are fun characters that children will love to read about. Adults will enjoy this story just as much.
Ballet Shoes--Life before Social Benefits.......2005-09-15
For any aspiring young dancer, this book is a must read. This series of "shoe" books is the one mentioned in You've Got Mail>Set in England around 1913, it details the lives of three adopted children, Pauline, Petrova, and Posy Fossil who learn to dance and act in order to help out their guardian's niece who is looking after them while GUM (Great Uncle Mathew) is away looking for more fossils. They attend the Children's Academy of Dance in London, but are trained in acting, mime, and dance. Posy's mother was a famous ballerina and Posy, the youngest will stop at nothing to get the best training. Petrova's mother was Russian, but Petrova loves machinery of all kinds, especially cars and airplane (aeroplanes in England). Pauline is a natural actress and achieves fame in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. This book is great for all girls who want to become famous and make their name known.

Book Description
In
Peter Penguin and His Chatter Beak, Peter is famous for his non stop chatter! But when Peter gets a new baby sister, no one's listening anymore. Children can CHITTER-CHATTER along with the story to discover why Peter decides that having a little sister isn't so bad after all.
Customer Reviews:
Peter's nameless sister.......2001-05-29
This is the worst book in the Snappy series, but it is still cute. Peter Penguin is jealous of his new sister, who never gets a name in this book. He goes running away and gets lost. He loves to chat to himeself and his baby sister chats back and finds him. Then he returns home and they chitter chatter all day long together. Simple story, cute drawings. The problem i have with it is the baby sister does not get a name. My 9-month-old does like to chew on Peter's round black head though. Not a bad book, but other's in this series are a lot better like Penny Polar bear, Lucy Lobster and Tiny Tyanasourous.
