4 out of 5 stars Excellent book with plenty of typos.......1998-06-26

I learned a lot from this book. But the 2nd edition has a lot of typos the 1st edition doesn't have. The companion answerbook that lists answers to the questions in Physical Methods is a rip-off.

Book Description

This is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either in an undergraduate physical chemistry course or by beginning graduate students with little undergraduate background in the subject. It assumes familiarity with thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, the kinetic theory of gases, quantum mechanics and spectroscopy, at the level at which these subjects are normally treated in undergraduate physical chemistry. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics and is ideally suited to use in one semester courses.

Download Description

Statistical mechanics is the theoretical apparatus used to study the properties of macroscopic systems - systems made up of many atoms or molecules - and relates those properties to the system's microscopic constitution. This book is an introduction to statistical mechanics, intended to be used either by advanced undergraduates or by beginning graduate students. The first chapter deals with statistical thermodynamics and aims to quickly derive the most commonly used formulas in the subject. The remainder of the book then illustrates the application of these formulas in traditional areas such as the ideal gas and less traditional areas such as the quantum ideal gas. Highly illustrated with numerous exercises and worked solutions, it provides a concise, up-to-date treatise of statistical mechanics ideal for use on an 8-12 lecture course.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction.......2006-09-01

While looking for a suitable textbook for a one-semester course on Statistical Mechanics, I found this little gem by Prof. Widom, a recognized authority in the field. It was a pleasure to read, clear, all the classical topics well explained, very understandable.
Several excellent textbook on the subject are available, but none conveys so much in so little space (THE SPACE you have available in an undergraduate lecture course), yet with no compromise on rigour or clarity. At the beginning, I was a little uneasy by the choice of skipping a discussion of the (difficult) foundations, jumping directly to the Boltzmann distribution as a starting point. Now I totally agree with it, it is the best for a first introduction, and if time is left (rarely) one can profitably add a discussion on fundations at the end of the course.

Traveling to the desolate rock-strewn deserts of northen Kenya, where the temperature can hit a brutal and dry 130 degrees, would be enough of a trip, but scientist Alan Walker also takes us on a trip in time, far back in time, where we meet a boy who will help to re-write the story of our human ancestors. The mysterious boy, whose skeleton is the best specimen of Homo Erectus, the species long considered the proverbial missing link between apes and humans, lived more than a million years ago. But in the hands of scientists whose skill is only matched by their curiosity, his bones talk to us today. A highly readable account which shows how paleoanthropologists, in work both painstaking and exciting, reach conclusions about the day-to-day life of the ancestors of modern man.

                  Book Description

"Fascinating. . . .  As engaging an explanation of how scientists study fossil bones as any I have ever read." --John R. Alden, Philadelphia Inquirer

In 1984 a team of paleoanthropologists on a dig in northern Kenya found something extraordinary: a nearly complete skeleton of Homo erectus, a creature that lived 1.5 million years ago and is widely thought to be the missing link between apes and humans. The remains belonged to a tall, rangy adolescent male. The researchers called him "Nariokotome boy."

In this immensely lively book, Alan Walker, one of the lead researchers, and his wife and fellow scientist Pat Shipman tell the story of that epochal find and reveal what it tells us about our earliest ancestors. We learn that Nariokotome boy was a highly social predator who walked upright but lacked the capacity for speech. In leading us to these conclusions, The Wisdom of the Bones also offers an engaging chronicle of the hundred-year-long search for a "missing link," a saga of folly, heroic dedication, and inspired science.

"Brilliantly captures [an] intellectual odyssey. . . .  One of the finest examples of a practicing scientist writing for a popular audience."
                  --Portland Oregonian

"A vivid insider's perspective on the global efforts to document our own ancestry."
                  --Richard E. Leakey

                  5 out of 5 stars Fascinating!!!.......2005-05-06

Pat Shipman and Alan Walker are not only brilliant scientists, but also superb authors. Once I started reading this book, I could not put it down. Excellent for aspiring anthropologists, like myself, and ANYONE interested in human origins. Fantastic writing, excellent research. In fact, every book this husband and wife team has written is fantastic. TAKING WING by Pat Shipman, about Archaeopterix and the origin of flight is another highly addictive book!

2 out of 5 stars I am not really interested in Alan Walker's life.......2005-04-13

It is largely a semi autobiogographic account of Alan Walker's life, which I am not concerned about, It does have some information on the Nariokotome Boy which I am very interested in.

As such it held little that kept me interested.

5 out of 5 stars Very creative ideas and easy to digest for novice.......2005-01-21

Although this is obviously a book grounded in science, it's important to note that this isn't chemistry or quantum physics, where if you don't have specialized knowledge it will be a waste of your time. The authors here do a great job of presenting their findings and then explaining how and why they made the assumptions they did based on those findings. Anybody can follow their logic and come to their own conclusions based on the evidence. It is also very well written and even the story of the researchers travelling to Africa is quite interesting.

I saw another reviewer bashing the authors for making wild conclusions based on minimal evidence. But that is the creative genius of these people. They're not making wild conclusions, but rather the most logical findings they can working with tiny pieces of bone millions of years old. For instance, at one point the authors discuss finding evidence of a specific type of disease in a pre homo-sapiens fossil. We know that the person (or hominid!) would have been partially crippled for some extended period of time, and certainly unable to gather food and defend against predators. Much like reading tree rings, the next layers of bone show that the infection or disease healed, and the being likely recovered and went on with life. The fact of the recovery leads to the author's conclusion that at this point in pre-history, the (person) had someone else as a caregiver, helping gather water and food and offering shelter, etc. This is important and offers glimpses into the mental and emotional development at that point in time. It seems a rather simple idea, but it's just one of numbers of brilliant ideas the authors proffer that don't seem like wild conclusions at all.

The entire book is fascinating and quite honestly makes me wish I could go back in time and change professions.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting take on Human Evolutions.......2002-05-03

Aside from being a fantastic professor and wonderful conversationalist Alan Walkier is a great writer. He and his wife Pat Shipman have taken many literary ventures together; this one being their best.

The challenge in popular scientific books is to make potentially dense material easy to read so that the reader doesn't feel burdened by the material he or she reads. Walker and Shipman do this very well in "Wisdom of the Bones". Walker successfully integrates two stories here- one of his trip to Kenya leading up to his team's revolutionary discovery of Turkana Boy (Homo erectus/ ergaster), and the other of Turkana Boy and his bretherin.

The book doubles as a pleasurable novel and a factually saturated work-- I've found this book an invaluable resource in many classes, but i've also enjoyed the plot line. Walker keeps one engaged throughout the book-- not an easy feat in the scientific world.

                  3 out of 5 stars Too Heavy a Burden.......2001-03-04

This book reminds me that Christian Huygens "knew" that there was so much hemp growing on the planet Jupiter. How did he know?. . .Moons! That's how. Jupiter has so many moons. These would be used by lots of sailors. . .to guide their ships at night. Lots of sailors. . .lots of ships. Ships require miles of rope if they are to sail. Hence there must be a lot of hemp on Jupiter. And so it is that Walker makes so much out of so little evidence... An ancient hominid dies with a chronic bone disease and therefore must have had a lot of concerned family/companions and a massive social structure to have survived. The anterior-posterior dimension of the skeleton's cervical spinal canal is narrow, therefore the chest musculature couldn't have been sufficient to support the ability to speak (never mind that elderly humans frequently have spinal canals of 8 mm and never complain of problems speaking). It's fun to speculate about our ancestor and Walker and his team deserve great credit for finding the fine H. erectus specimen and scientifically documenting his sex, age, time of appearance on earth etc. maybe we should reserve accolades on this one until we have some more evidence....

                          Book Description

Over the last several years, physicists interested in understanding the structure of matter at the fundamental partonic (quark and lepton) level have come to realize that an electron-ion collider can address many of the outstanding questions in hadronic physics. In Summer 2000, a new Long Range Planning Exercise was announced for nuclear physics in the United States, and the proponents of an electron-ion collider came together to make the scientific case for this machine. This workshop summarizes the physics case and machine design for a next generation facility to study the fundamental structure of hadrons.
Topics include: Spin and flavor structure of the nucleon, semi-exclusive processes, heavy quarks/target fragmentation, e-A physics, and machine.

There are many juvenile fiction books where the plot is about a hick from the sticks achieving success in big time sports. However, this book is clearly the one that takes that theme the farthest. The Chicks are a major league baseball tam in last place in the American League with no prospects for improvement. The manager's name is Popoff Pendergast, the owner's name is Zeke Chickering and they have a wisecracking pitcher with a sore arm named Pretzels Litzenberg.
When Zeke threatens to fire Popoff, he sends Pretzels on a quest for talent. After a series of frustrating events, Pretzels ends up in backwater Oklahoma where he encounters the teenaged Dave King. Dave is a boy with ambition and that ambition is to raise chickens. His prize rooster is Governor Bradford and he fully expects the cock to take first prize in the local show. Dave also has two other talents, the ability to hit baseballs foul and the salve he invented using chicken fat.
Since Pretzels is desperate to find talent, he allows Dave to apply the salve to his lame arm. The effect is immediate and dramatic, Pretzels is suddenly firing the pitches in at big league speed. He pitches to Dave and realizes that Dave never misses in hitting the ball, but every time the ball goes foul. After some haggling, Pretzels promises Dave a contract so they pack up and go back to the Chicks. However, Dave cannot ever be without his chickens, so they take the rooster Hobomok with them.
Hobomok becomes the Chicks mascot; they train him to crow whenever a home run is hit. Once Pretzels and Dave start playing, the team is fired up and starts winning. Since Dave never misses when he swings but cannot hit the ball fair, he walks every time. Because there are times when he fouls off over ten to twenty pitches before he walks, the opposing pitchers get frustrated and tired.
Unfortunately, there are people opposed to the walking gimmick and protest the way Dave plays the game. This hurts his feelings, so Dave starts practicing hitting the ball fair. The Chicks win their pennant and enter the World Series. The season comes down to the last game with Dave at bat with the chance to win the game.
After the season is over, Dave insists on going back to raise his chickens full-time. His salary and World Series earnings give him enough money to buy a very large farm with plenty of chicken stock.
Even though the story is as corny and as hokey as they come, it was still fun to read. I first read it when I was in middle school and even though several decades have passed and my reading tastes have changed, it was just as much a page-turner now as it was back then. It is so well written that even the corniness is cool.

                                Book Description

The Des Moines Majestyks are deep in the cellar...so deep that it seems nothing short of divine intervention could even get them up to the ground floor. They do have one star, Juan-Tanamera "Bueno" Aires, an ex-basketball phenom who performs miracles at the plate and magic in the field. Unfortunately, team owner Holden Canfield, who’s struck it rich with an Internet start-up, spent the entire team budget on acquiring "Bueno," leaving the rest of the roster painfully devoid of talent.

Manager Zuke Johansen has just about given up hope when an unexpected thing happens: A scout introduces him to Marvin Kowalski. A straight-A student, valedictorian of his high school class, and on his way to MIT, Marvin knows little about the rules of the game, and his pencil-thin physique would get him laughed off a big-league diamond. But Marvin has one brilliant skill. The ultimate "one-tool" player, he has such a good eye that he can tell what kind of pitch is coming almost before it leaves the pitcher's hand. And even though he's not much of a hitter, his reflexes and coordination are incredibly fast–-so fast, in fact, that nobody can strike him out, as Zuke Johansen quickly sees. Marvin may not be Babe Ruth, but he has found a way to exhaust–-and utterly enrage–-opposing pitchers, driving them to distraction before he takes his inevitable base. Faced with the prospect of leading his team to one of the worst season records since the game was played without gloves, Zuke is desperate enough to wonder if Marvin's strange talent might just lift his Majestyks out of the cellar....

The Kid Who Batted 1.000 is one of those rare sports novels that will appeal to fervent fans as well as those still trying to figure out the infield fly rule. Generously sprinkling his story with some of the best-loved one-liners in the game, Troon McAllister delivers a darkly funny behind-the-scenes look at our national pastime, cementing his place as a major-league humorist.

I'll keep it simple: if you want to read a great novel with the title, "The Kid Who Batted 1.000" read the ORIGINAL, written in the 50's by Bob Allison and Frank Ernest Hill.

                                1 out of 5 stars A Wasted At-Bat.......2002-10-29

This is quite possibly one of the worst examples ever of baseball fiction. A vapid story, with enough oddball plays that would not occur in a decade's worth of major league play, much less a one team's single season.
As a very serious collector of adult baseball fiction with over 100 works in my library, this ranks, in my opinion, at the bottom. Nice dust jacket, though.
If you really feel compelled to read this type of work, get a copy of The Curious Case of Sidd Finch, which, while it too is not great fiction, was at least fresh in its time and had some humor in it.

5 out of 5 stars A great book getting an unfair knock.......2002-05-27

I'm 100% in favor of free expression, especially in a public book review forum such as this one, but shouldn't there be a requirement that people actually read the work before critiquing it?

The author of this novel not only acknowledged right in the book that he had re-written a children's book for adults, not only told the story of how he came to undertake that effort, but dedicated the book to the original authors!

Whether you like the book or not (I loved it, to the tune of five stars), at least have the courtesy to read the whole thing before hurling unfair accusations.

4 out of 5 stars fun to read baseball story.......2002-05-27

Thanks to the owner investing everything on one superstar, the Des Moines Majestyks are heading for the cellar because the rest of the team stinks. However, that changes when recent high school grad and future MIT student, skinny Marvin Kowalski joins the team. Marvin does not even know the basic rules of baseball, but he has eyesight at the plate keener than Ted Williams and has an uncanny ability to foul off strikes. Besides drawing walks, Marvin tires out opposing pitchers who throw a lot of pitches when he bats.

Kowalski joins the losers and soon a miracle occurs as he turns the mousy Majestyks into the might Majestyks. Each win is one game closer to making the World Series even though Kowalski prepares to jump ship for MIT.

THE KID WHO BATTED 1.000 is a fun to read baseball story that never takes itself seriously as it combines a typical sports tale with real anecdotes from the game. Because the game is the prime character, the players including Kowalski never fully develop as much as baseball seems to take a life of its own in a Ken Burns way. Kowalski giving up his salary to attend college would have seemed like a fictional stretch until football safety Pat Tillman recently left his NFL career to join the US Army. Troon McCallister provides an amusing book perhaps not for the die-hard fantasy baseball player, but for those casual fans who enjoy the seventh inning stretch.

If anybody gives you that "How can you like a stupid game like baseball?" line, hand them a copy of this book.
