    Book Description

Joseph Priestley (1733-1804) was the founder of modern chemistry and discoverer of oxygen, a theologian, and political philosopher. He came to Pennsylvania in 1794 after suffering persecution in his homeland, England, for his dissenting religious beliefs and liberal political views. Northumberland became his home for the last 10 years of his life. His Federal-style house features a laboratory and period objects, and a visitor center includes exhibits that focus on his varied accomplishments.

      Book Description

War, ethnic conflict, and biological terror are our greatest international challenges of the new century. War currently rages from Iraq to Colombia to Sri Lanka, genocide recently devastated Rwanda and Bosnia, anthrax spores caused panic and killed citizens in the United States, and threats of terrorism are remaking foreign policy the world over.

Groundbreaking in both its scope and conclusions, Darwin and International Relations refocuses the study of international affairs through the lens of evolutionary theory. Bradley A. Thayer provides a radically new framework for investigating and explaining human and state behavior, offering penetrating insights into the origins of human and animal warfare, ethnic conflict, and the influence of epidemiology on international relations.

Using ethnological and statistical studies of warfare among tribal societies, Thayer argues that humans wage war for reasons predicted by evolutionary theory—to gain and protect vital resources. He also examines the physically and emotionally stimulating effects of combat, concluding that the threat of external attack has rapidly advanced the evolution of human intelligence and social development.

Thayer demonstrates that an evolutionary understanding of disease will soon become a vital part of the study of international relations as new strains of diseases emerge and advances in genetics make biological weaponry a more effective tool for states and terrorists. He also explains the roots of ethnic conflict by illuminating how xenophobia and ethnocentrism have played a significant role in human evolution. These socially and biologically conditioned responses contributed to our ancestors' success by protecting them from disease, and although human evolution took place in a dramatically different environment, these traits remain a part of us today.

An arresting examination of how ancient human behaviors of war and ethnic conflict continue to afflict the modern era, Darwin and International Relations makes a major contribution to our understanding of human history and international relations.

5 out of 5 stars Understanding International Relations.......2007-01-30

The author uses evolutionary theory to develop ultimate explanations for common phenomena (warfare, ethnic conflict) that have largely eluded other international relations scholars. The basic argument is that warfare is an adaptation like other social behaviors. For our ancestors, on average, the benefits for participants in terms of the evolutionary currency of genes (or inclusive fitness) exceeded the costs. These benefits were mainly protection of kin and resources. In-group out-group distinctions, xenophobia, and ethnocentrism are also adaptations, and now supply the raw material for ethnic conflict.

The author acknowledges the contributions of international relations scholars using the standard social science model, including realists and rational choice scholars, but argues that their theories and explanations focus mainly on proximate causes and, problematically, are often not consilent with knowledge in the life sciences.

The author does an excellent job of reviewing the research conducted on intergroup aggression in animals, warfare among ants, and intraspecific killing among chimpanzees. There are able reviews of the literature on primitive warfare and the motivation/emotions of warriors. The little discussed by pivotal role of disease in facilitating and inhibiting Western expansion is discussed. Current theories of ethnic conflict--primordialism and modernism--are compared and their strengths and weaknesses identified.

This book should be read widely by anybody who wants a deeper, well-grounded, scientific understanding of the roots of warfare and ethnic conflict

5 out of 5 stars Fine command of the literature.......2006-01-03

Bradley Thayer's book demonstrates an encyclopedic command of the literature. The volume lays out the relevance for the relevance of evolutionary theory for our understanding of international relations. Given the political furor over creationism, intelligent design, and neo-Darwinian evolutionary theory, this work serves an important purpose. Thayer demonstrates the power of evolutionary theory in explaining many of the political phenomena associated with international politics. Readers interested in the implications of evolutionary theory for international politics would be well-advised to examine this volume.

Ever traded baseball cards or comicbooks? You?ve taken your first step in investing!

This book succeeds where many others fail: It does an excellent job of breaking into layman's terms the most complex investing and financial concepts, while at the same time making the whole thing completely relatable for someone who knows *nothing* about investing. That is a talent many wish they had. This is no mean feat when you consider all the jargon you have to learn. Now, imagine having fun while doing it! Wow! Eric Tyson, eat your heart out!

Sure, it?s been a while since this book first came out, so you know it needs a little updating...get over it! I still give the book five well-deserved stars. I appreciate the authors for writing such an awesome little book, as reading a book is a big investment of time, and reading this book was definitely worth it.

Share it with a teen or twenty-something you love, and give them the gift of setting them on the path to becoming investors.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST READ for people in their teens and twenties!.......2000-07-27

Before I bought this book, I was probably like a lot of young people out there... ya get paid from work and you go blow it on the weekend with your friends at the mall. You just manage to get your bills paid off, and wonder why you can never seem to get a decent amount put away in your savings account? People, wake up! This is the time you should be saving for your future, or you'll regret that you didn't when you get older! I bought this book with determination not to spend every dollar I make and how to put my money towards my future. The book gives excellent explainations on the stock market and how it works, and even explains all those Wall Street symbols in a way that it's actually fun to read! It explains everything from savings accounts, to stocks and bonds, to IRAs! When I was finished reading the book, I was so glad I had read it when I did, because the later you wait, the more you're wasting time! I recommend this book to all! Read it and you'll be glad that you did!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent piece of information........1999-07-04

This is an excellent book. It makes so easy to understand - all those complicated stock terms, author makes use of beautiful examples from time to time. It is a must have for every person who wants to invest money in stocks etc. (may be, except the ones, whose primary carrier is stocks or stock trading). I myself bought and sold stock over the last few years but never understood the terminology completely. It is nice to have it in my library - Thanks to the authors.

5 out of 5 stars A personal library must! Says a Cincinnati Investor........1999-03-30

There is absolutely no better tool in the market today. It's a great handbook for those sophisticated Generation X'ers, and an even a better tool for that worldly, younger new generation who are blazing trails right behind the X'ers.

Hey Boomers, your children, the N'Gens, are going to take the world by storm. With your ideas and their cohesive, cooperative energetic spirit, there isn't anything that they won't accomplish.... But without the financial skills so wonderfully illustrated in this book, your child will be left behind the pack. He or She will fail to live up to their unbelievable potential.

As an owner of this book, I can honestly attest to its value. I think it should be part of every high school senior's core curriculum! It is the only book that can make sure your child is ready to assist his/her peers in shaping the future of America and the World.

If your school board has not yet adopted this text, then please makes sure before your son or daughter goes off to college this fall that they have this guidebook to the world of life. America and for that matter the World will be grateful.

Through a series of short and easy to read sections, she gets right to the heart of the problem and then provides an easy work-through to a solution. This book may not change your whole life, but I think that it just may change it enough to help you onto the right path. The rest is up to you.

You heard the spiritual laws. You know them. Amy lives them. In her book " All Good Things Take Time, Bad Things Come Rushing at You Before You Have a Chance to Duck" Amy shows how the spiritual laws applied in her life and how through a slight change in thinking your own life can become happier more fullfilling and sublime. The book is warm funny sexy encouraging; but mostly friendly. It's like having Amy as your very own best friend. She even lets you call her by her first name! My apologies if I was too "happy" in writing this review but I just read the book : )

This book is a great book for anyone who has ever been in a tough place in their life. It is uplifting and brings a smile to one's face. Through her own experiences, the author teaches us that life is a battle that can be won without succumbing to personal fears. I recommend this book not only to people seeking help, but anyone who wishes to enhance their life.

              4 out of 5 stars Uplifting.......2005-10-10

I found this easy-to-read book touching. As the author recounts her own experiences, some depressing and downbeat, she comes through each one focused and positive. The reader cannot help but admire Amy even if a particular passage or chapter does not relate to them. This book is full of simple, though sound advice for the reader as we each embark on our own journey to happiness.

In this uplifting book, Amy presents a series of short documents containing words of wisdom and of experience both sad and humorous. This book is useful people who are going through any life change, including young adults, as it provides the reader with the steps necessary to make any change or improvement in their life. People find that the book is motivational and inspirational as well as fun to read. If read from beginning to end it unwittingly builds self-esteem while guiding reader's trough their life paths. This gentle easy reading hits home for the reader. Anecdotes of dealing with the IRS or how to become a politician come from Amy's own life experience of being an accountant and a candidate. The traumas of being an abused child taken by the state, recovering from multiple brain injuries, marriage, divorce, raising children, changing careers, sibling rivalry, along with guidance from above provide the basis for this writing. The short documents make it a good first book for non-readers as well as people that have difficulty concentrating (our friends with ADD).

...Linda Bleser doesn't just write books, she creates vivid images for people's minds to chew on. She's an excellent writer, one who is going to make a real name for herself in this (or any other) genre she chooses to write in. She's my true literary inspiration, and an incredibly gifted person - reading her work will be one of the best decisions you'll ever make.

5 out of 5 stars The Chance You Take.......2000-09-21

This book is a must read. Never have I read a book with more compelling, likable characters. They kept me laughing and cheering all the way through. I even found myself laughing out loud during some scenes. This book is beautifully written, the words flowing so easily, almost poetic. Linda Bleser is an exceptional storyteller. She spins a funny and heartfelt tale that is hard to put down. I look so forward to reading her next book and every one after.

Fans of Mary Kay Andrews, Fannie Flagg, and the Sweet Potato Queens won't miss this sensational novel from the author of Since You're Leaving Anyway, Take Out the Trash. Picking up where they left off, Debbie Sue Overstreet and her pal, Edwina, are running the Styling Station and their detective agency the Domestic Equalizers. For them, there's no crime or heartbreak that a little hairspray and a little poking around can't solve! But when Paige McBride comes to town-a little bit spoiled and a whole lot rich the three soon find themselves knee deep in the muck of a horse-thievin' and husband-cheatin' escapade that sets the town of Saltlick, TX, on its ear. By the end, hair will be styled, casseroles will burn, and creeps will be brought to justice if Equalizers have their way. And love will, of course, conquer all.

                4 out of 5 stars Much Fun!!!.......2006-06-03

Paige McBride has always been a pampered child. Daddy McBride has raised Paige in a lifestyle she has found success in, until one day Daddy tells her she is on her own. Needless to say, Paige has no idea what to do or how to get a job. Paige spent six years stumbling from colege to college but never came away with a college degree. Daddy steps in for one of the final times and helps Paige find a job she could only dream of having. She is offered a job as an assistant to a horse cutter. The catch is she has to move to a town, Salt Lick, Texas, in the middle of nowhere.

Spur Atwater finds himself nearly penniless and crossing his fingers and hoping his loan comes through so he can fulfill his dream of being a vet. New to Salt Lick, Texas as well, being single and sexy poses for an interesting welcome.

Paige meets 2 interesting ladies, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwinda Perkins-Martin, near her first day in town and they become fast friends. Debbie Sue and Edwina, hair dressers by day, private investigators by night, find themselves embroiled in a plan to thrwart a horse stealing ring. Paige is enlisted in the plan, but her relationship with Spur hangs in the balance. Can their love survive her attempts to help her friends and save the horses which are so dear to her?

Paige and Spur get themselves entangled with each other in more ways than one throughout this fun read.

Add in some interesting Texas characters, misunderstandings, good food, and a lock in in a convenience store cooler and you have a hillarious story which reads quickly and leaves you wanting more when the story ends.

I initially got this book because the title intrigued me but I found this book to be an great read. I read through it so fast I was surprised when it was over. I will look for her first book.
