Customer Reviews:
Good introduction to basic ideas on contamination control!.......2003-03-05
A good introductory-level textbook on contamination control that that provides sufficient background knowledge for the lay person. Concepts were presented in a clear and concise manner. Could have been better if the book includes more diagrams and figures, though.

No area of science has a higher incidence of colorful personalities than paleoanthropology. The Leakey family and Donald Johanson are merely the best known of a vivid and contentious bunch that have not hesitated--indeed, have made every effort--to air their conflicts before a wider public. Roger Lewin's recently updated Bones of Contention is the only reliable field guide to these scientists, their characters, and controversies. Lewin never forgets that hominid fossil discoveries always involve both the self-image of humanity and that of individual scientists. Lewin is uniquely evenhanded (i.e. he thinks everyone is wrong from time to time), yet the all-star blurbs on the cover show that he retains the respect of the entire paleoanthropological community.
Book Description
Bones of Contention is a behind-the-scenes look at the search for human origins. Analyzing how the biases and preconceptions of paleoanthropologists shaped their work, Roger Lewin's detective stories about the discovery of Neanderthal Man, the Taung Child, Lucy, and other major fossils provide insight into this most subjective of scientific endeavors. The new afterword looks at ways in which paleoanthropology, while becoming more scientific
in many ways, remains contentious.
"[An] un-put-downable book."—John Gribbon, Times Educational Supplement
"Not just another 'stones and bones' account of human evolution. It is Lewin's thesis, amply demonstrated, that paleoanthropology is the most subjective of sciences because it engages the emotions of virtually everyone; and since the evidence is scrappy, interpretation is everything. . . . A splendid, stirring, and eye-opening account, to be devoured."—Kirkus Reviews, starred review
"[Lewin shows] 'how very unscientific the process of scientific inquiry can be.'. . . Bones of Contention is . . . serious intellectual history."—Edward Dolnick, Wall Street Journal
"[Lewin] documents his thesis in persuasive detail. . . . The reader is carried along by the power of Mr. Lewin's reporting."—Robert Wright, New York Times Book Review
Customer Reviews:
An enlightening account .......2006-09-26
What I found most interesting about Lewin's accounts of paleoanthropologists and their work is that many of them aren't as objective as they want the public to think they are. Scientists are only human and they are subject to the same range of emotions including anger, jealousy, hatred, as well as love and compassion as any layperson. Given this fact, it's obvious that science is not synonynous with absolute truth, but it does attempt to explain the world we live in.
Tracing your ancestry.......2001-03-16
Lewin has undertaken a formidable task in relating the issues, personalities and technologies involved in tracing the path of human evolution. Dealing with such giants in the field of paleoanthropology as Mary and Richard Leakey, Don Johanson and others would be daunting to anyone lacking the confidence in his abilities. His aptitude is clear to the reader as he walks a tightrope in presenting the complex topics involved in this story. Nearly all the persona are still with us, and it's to Lewin's credit that he manages to compose this story without blackening anyone's reputation.
Tracing the line of our ancestors is becoming an increasingly involved process. From skimpy fossil records, scattered over remote locations around the globe, researchers are striving to understand which line depicts the path of our evolution and which branches have split off to expire without further contribution. Once the evidence lay with bones, how they were formed, changed, and contributed to resulting modern humans. Lewin recounts that the fossil record is no longer enough, and advanced technologies can tease out answers from the most subtle clue.
Lewin's account of Misia Landau's study of paleoanthropologists as perpetrators of "hero myths" is a splendid beginning. Because the basic issue is: "how did we become the way we are", then all the stories on human evolution begin at the end - today's human. The "big names" in the field each addressed this question with vigour. Each interpreted the evidence with force, but not always based on what the evidence warranted. It surely follows that "contention" is an inevitable result. There simply weren't enough fossils to realistically trace the human lineage.
Using Landau's ideas as a foundation, Lewin traces the history of thinking on human evolution through paleoanthropology's leading figures. From Raymond Dart's Taung Child through the Ramapithecus, Lewin depicts how many paths have been drawn of the human lineage by able workers. New evidence has forced constant revision. For years, the most notable revisionist was the Leakey family, Louis, Mary and Richard. The Leakey's finds kept urging the origins of humans into a remoter past. A very remote past. A past abruptly truncated by Don Johanson's find of Lucy, and by the introduction of new technologies.
Lewin takes us through the problems of dating fossils and tracing evolutionary paths with superior journalist's skill. Tracing elusive chemicals and microscopic tracks in rock crystals shouldn't make for heady reading. Lewin, following Landau, demonstrates how the science can be clouded by personalities and ambitions. The KBS Tuff chapters don't become mired in technology, but give the research a human, if not always pleasant, aspect. Lewin shows clearly how the controversies must be endured in order to present the clearest picture of how humanity evolved. This is a highly informative book, written from a fervent interest in the topic. You cannot help being drawn into the story.
Triumph of Egoism over Science.......2000-10-30
A big disappointment! Roger Lewin essentially provides a book report of the most significant controversies in paleoanthropological history with very little original insight. The result is a tedious review (especially the 78 pages discussing the KBS Tuft Controversy) of the seamy side of paleoanthropology. The recurrent theme is that of entrenched preconceptions - both professional and personnal - so dominating the actions of the foremost paleoanthropologists that they ignore the preponderence of evidence in favor of their own agendas. The book is replete with examples of the petty jealosies and egoism of the foremost names in paleoanthropology triumphing over a dedication for the search for the truth. With this book, Mr Lewin escapes the threat of becoming embroilled in the jealosies and controversies of other benchmark works as he provides nothing original to attack.
I've read it twice now!.......2000-05-17
This is science journalism near to its best, picking up the important themes in a way that educates even professionals in related fields (I'm a psychologist who writes about human evolution). Unlike anthropologists themselves -- probably the most fractious of academics I've ever met -- Lewin at least gives the appearance of trying to be fair to all the different positions. Of course he is politically correct and probably talks too much about the social context and people's motives but the main elements in the intellectual debates do come across. The discovery of Dart's australopithecene and its aftermath (traced forward for decades) was my favorite. A second favorite was the dethroning of ramapithecus when it was found that homanids only went back 5 million years rather than 15 million. Lucy's discovery is always good press and so is mitochondrial Eve. Too bad Lewin won't be treating us to a third edition in the near future for the field surely needs a good updating. Then I'd just love it if he turned his talents to my own area of research, the IQ controversy. But I doubt he would ever do that for that is much too dangerous territory for a liberal who wants to remain honest....
Outstanding ... must read!.......1999-04-29
Lewin does a masterful job of exploring the controversy surrounding the evolution of man ... a riveting, candid, delightful, revealing look behind the scenes ... a rare cameo of man's subjectivity in pursuit of objective science ... a page turner and mind opener from cover to cover. And then read it again!

The best Physics problem set for the MCAT ......PERIOD!.......2007-06-17
This book is one of the two books I focused on for my MCAT. I used this book and the 1001 Chemistry questions to "freshen up" on my weak areas.
Examkrackers 1001 Questions in MCAT Chemistry (Examkrackers)
These books are NOT designed to be worked all the way beginning to end, but either randomly or specific sections. It even mentions that in the books. These are not to be confused with the Examkrackers textbooks or testbooks, and these should not be purchased instead of on those. These are only a supplement to the examkrackers program for the MCAT.
When I took my practic tests (AMCAS is the best because they make the MCAT) I found out my weak areas. I then when back in the Examkrackers textbooks and reviewed that passage, then I did all of the problems for that section in the problem book which was only about 15 per topic (e.g. linear acceleration). The alternate method would be doing every 4th or 5th question till you find something you aren't skilled in.
The problems are ordered in increasing difficulty, with explanations in the back of the book and best way to attempt the problem. Best of all, if you use it with the textbooks it explains how to do the problems in your head efficiently. By the time I was ready for the MCAT, I learned more physics from these books than a whole year in college. In college I just memorized formulas, with these problem books you learn the concepts and how it relates. This one beats out Kaplan, and Princeton by long shot (I used both). I never memorized one single formula for the MCAT, and my score was very competitive.
At first it seemed promising........2007-06-10
At first I thought that this book was good. It seems like a good idea to practice 1001 questions. However, the questions are confusing and not reflective of real MCAT questions. I've had my physics instructor, who used to teach MCAT prep courses, look at the book and he also thought that many questions were not worded well. They say that they are trying to make it more challenging so that you will know what to expect on the MCAT. I don't like that approach and wish I hadn't spent my money on this. BTW I'm getting 10's and 11's, usually only missing two or three physics questions, on my practice sections, so I don't feel like it's because I don't understand physics.
Review of Examkrackers 1001 Questions in MCAT Physics by Jonathan Orsay.......2007-01-13
The book contains over 1001 practice questions for MCAT. The shear amount of practice from this book is guaranteed to help you prepare for MCAT one way or another.
How similar the questions are to actual MCAT physics questions is a whole another matter. And in truth not too similar. Firstly, actual MCAT physics questions are often based on a passage, all the physics questions from Examkrackers are standalone questions. Actual MCAT questions vary in topic from one question to the next, in this book questions are grouped together by topic. So if you're trying to simulate MCAT testing conditions while doing the exercises in this practice book it wouldn't be a realistic simulation. Secondly because all questions are standalone, it's hard to set time limits for a number of questions. Of course you're always trying to do the questions as fast as you can, being as careful as you can. But taking the MCAT requires a good sense of timing that you probably won't get from this book. Thirdly, the content of the questions in this book rely on what is extra to the MCAT. So there may be questions that require a bit of memorization and knowledge from other sciences. In itself this is not a bad thing, but it should dictate the way you use the book.
If you have time, I would recommend doing all the questions in there. And then moving on to more realistic practice from other books.
I hope this was a helpful review.
Delivery time.......2005-09-10
It took a long time from Amazon to deliver the item to me and I did not feel good about since my exam was getting closer to the date of delivering the book.
In the begining I ask for free delivary and you said it will take 5 days but the 5 days came and gone and no delivary.
I tried another type of delivary but no way the book did not come. Then I cancle the whole thing and starts again with the v. expensive delivary then the book came, but it was v.late.

Best MCAT Physics Review book by far..........2007-07-01
This book gives you practice tests that are MCAT style at the end of sections and thats what makes it the best review book out there. The MCAT is about not only learning the concepts but about PRACTICE. And this book does both really well.. Buy the book, use it, improve your score. Simple!
Better than Exam Krackers.......2007-06-30
I never really had problems with Physics during undergrad, and assumed that I would have no problem with the MCAT. I bought the whole EK series including the 1001 question books. I read them I dont know how many times (I've been studying for months), but by the end I was very worried about my physics. Nothing made sense. After purchasing this book, everything makes sense again. Unlike EK, it offers a lot of very good example problems, and the questions at the end of each chapter really drill the IMPORTANT points, not just random physics questions. They help you memorize the equations, but stressing them in their problems. The problems are not really MCAT format, however, if you are having trouble with physics this book will definitely get you on the right track. The questions are not there to simulate MCAT problems so much as drill the important concepts into your brain. I haven't taken my test yet, I have two weeks to go...but I am feeling good, and I am considering purchasing the NOVA chem and bio books. I liked exam krackers when I first started, but I am beginning to feel they cut to many corners and have a tendency to confuse you by making things too easy. I give this book 5 stars if you need to RELEARN physics....if you are just looking for problems, this is not the book for you.
A great review book.......2007-06-30
The thoroughness of the topics covered and the quality of the questions make this book very valuable. I would highly recommend this book. The passage based questions are helpful as well.
Good review.......2006-07-19
I appreciate the humor which Biehle brings to the subject- the review he provides is quite thorough. I would have liked to have seen some combination concept passages (e.g. thermodynamics, fluids, and work-energy in one passage) because I feel that is the direction that the MCATs are heading in- but overall I am really satisfied with this purchase.
Great review..........2006-05-17
This book is great for all levels...need a refresher? Need to "re-learn"? This book will do the job!

Customer Reviews:
Great Book.......2007-05-09
The book is great. It covers everything you need for the MCAT without giving to much detail. I'd recommend the whole ExamKrackers series. How much better are the new updated edtions? I'm not sure.
OK for physics review.......2006-11-04
not the best mcat physics review book, IMO. the list of formulas is nice but other than that, just an OK book.
Use in Combination with Another Review Book.......2006-10-04
I find that this review book does the best job of directly telling what will and what will not be on the MCAT (I'm basing my comparison to Kaplan's and Princeton Review's Physics materials). Be forewarned, you must have a good background knowledge of introductory Physics to get the maximum benefit from this book. If you are in need of deep, thorough review of Physics (i.e. your Physics is weak), I wouldn't start here. I am using this book as a complement to Kaplan's review book that I received when I enrolled in Kaplan's MCAT course.
The book is broken down into 8 chapters, or lectures, each with a new Physics topic. There are discrete problems within each lecture, as well as a 30 minute "mini-MCAT" to take after you've completed the reading for each lecture. Though I am very pleased by the abundance of MCAT-like questions (and satisfied with the explanations), I find the questions emphasize a conceptual understanding of the material, and don't require a lot of calcuation. That's great for aiding in your conceptual understanding, but I'd also recommend doing additional practice with MCAT problems from another source to get used to doing relatively complex compuatations quickly and without a calculator.
Overall, however, I'm please with this book; it's the best Physics review book I've come across so far.
Ecellent Review Material.......2006-08-31
The ExamKrackers Books Break everything you need to know for The MCAT down their simplest forms.
Don't Study with this book........2006-06-18
I do not recommend this book. Not only it is poorly written, it will not give you the understanding you will need to do well on MCAT physics. This book is clearly not written by someone who REALLY understands physics. The questions at the end of each topic are way harder than the material covered and the explanation are poor and incomplete. STAY AWAY! I wish someone had told me this and had saved me time.

Mr. Sulu does voicework?.......2005-08-05
I bought these CDs a year after buying AudioOsmosis, after the once annoying jokes became something far, far worse. Audiolearn lacks these distractions, however suffers from a problem that I hadn't anticipated: AudioLearn is as stiff as AudioLearn is corny.
AudioLearn and Audio Osmosis seem to get to the same place in their own ways. Neither is perfect. Both are helpful. Both CDs were created by highly credentialed people. They cover the same information, which bolsters the faith you can have that you're studying the proper material.
AudioLearn:
-- Lectures are quite long (up to 18 minutes)
-- -- One track discusses several topics, thus making it difficult to locate specific information
-- No track listing is enclosed
-- Stiff (No contractions, no pronouns, repetitive word use)
-- -- For instance, when discussing the naming of alkanes:
-- -- -- "If the number of carbons is one, you say meth, if it is two you say eth, three you say prop, four you say but, five you say pent, six you say hex, seven you say hept, eight you say oct, nine you say non, ten you say dec."
-- Narrator sounds like Mr Sulu
-- No jokes, no sound effects
-- Mnemonics...sort of
-- -- To remember the signal that causes heart contraction: "just think of the letters SABP"... 'cause that's catchy.
AudioOsmosis:
-- Short lectures make it easy to find a particular topic
-- The jokes, gongs, applause, & laughtrack distract
-- -- They account for 20% of the lecutres
-- -- I can't stress enough how distracting they are
-- Jordan & John's co-narration makes listening more intersting
-- MAMA: Mnemonics Are Memory Aids
Best MCAT review!.......2005-05-02
This review is easy to listen to in the car or on your MP3 player. Covers all the key points in a concise manner which is sure to save you time. Well worth the money. Check e=>bay first though.
Way more useful than the other MCAT audio program!.......2003-02-14
I own this and another MCAT audio review and to be perfectly honest, you will learn and retain alot more useful information from this one. It highlights the things that actually appeared on the exam. It is more focused, to the point and without a lot of distracting noises and korny jokes that only aggitate an inquisitive mind. The disadvantage of this package is the fact that its on cassette tapes, but visitng their website I noticed that a CD version is on the way. My advice to all premeds is dont waist your money on an MCAT course, you'll get more than you bargained with this package.
A pseudo-learning tool that is behind the modern technology........2002-04-18
For the amount of money you pay, it isn't really worth it. There is no booklet to go along with the tapes, and they cover very shallow level of the subjects. Plus, in this age of CD's and DVD's, these audio tapes are archaic, and if you want to focus your study on certain sections, you will spend most of your time fast forwarding or rewiding the tapes.
You Get What You Pay For!!!!.......2002-01-26
Great product, especially if you don't have enough time to sit down and read. A little pricey but well worth a high score on the MCAT. My advice is listen to it a couple of times and you'll see the amazing results. BEST OF LUCK!! UCLA Class of 2002

Customer Reviews:
Concise and accurate -- an excellent review .......2006-11-06
These cards identify the critical concepts and present them beautifully-- they are concise without leaving out any relevant information. Subjects are divided into sections (easily distinguished by blue title cards) and a few examples are given for each subject. Excellent for any introductory physics class as well as for MCAT preparation.
Wow..........2006-08-02
I usually don't write reviews, but I'm deciding to do so because I'm really happy with these cards and had a positive experience dealing with the company that sells these (I bought these directly from them).
It's pretty clear that a lot of work went into making them, and 1000 cards is a good deal for the money. The cards really help you to iron out the concepts and does a good job integrating several topics already discussed to help you create a larger picture of what you're trying to jam into your head. It describes most things in terms of the theory behind it, which, judging by practice tests, is way more important for the MCAT than doing a ton of calculations that prep companies tend to make you do.
Anyway, there are pictures for every card, very thorough descriptions on the back of each card, and well tips at the bottom of each card that describes what typically goes on comprehensive exams. The topics are spread out nicely and each topic has a blue summary card that separates it from the other cards. Each topic has around
One downside to these cards is that the cards are jumbled together, and if you happen to drop the cards on the floor it'll take a lot of effort to put them back in order.
The cards are designed for MCAT prep, but I don't see why they can't be used for AP Tests either. I feel pretty prepared for the MCAT this August.
Highly recommended (and no, I'm not on the company's payroll)
Awesome study cards!.......2006-02-24
I just recently purchased the Wisebridge Learning Systems Physics Flashcards and they are absolutely great. These cards beat any other physics flashcards on the market. I highly recommend them to anyone either taking physics classes or preparing for the MCAT. I have my B.S. in physics and I wish the cards had been available when I was studying physics. The cards don't just have you memorize a bunch of facts but instead they help you to actually think about physics. These cards are great!
