Closed Barn Doors.......2007-01-09
Growing up on a farm, I knew some of the information contained in this book. However, it did a great job of explaining why things are done to make a barn both practical and successful. My family and I had many ideas of how we were to design our barn, but reading this book has allowed us to avoid several of what we now recognize as design pitfalls. With good explanations of each aspect of equine facilities (i.e. necessary facilities, additional facilities, designing techniques, etc.) and great pictorial content, my family and I were able to choose the designs which were perfect for us and our farm.
The only complaint I have about this book is that it disagreed with my original plans... and I was so hurt that someone found a flaw within my perfect self.
A job well done.
A perfect book!!!.......2006-11-01
This book should be ones first purchase. If it does not satisfy all questions then buy another book -but I doubt it will be necessary. I bought all the less expensive books first and wasted my money and valuable time....reading them. I eventually found this book...I wish I had bought ONLY this book. It is fantastic for architects, contractors and simpler folks wanting to design their own structure...anyone considering re-building or starting from scratch will find this is the book that will have saved you thousands of dollars and heartache and then some. No kidding, I second the opinion it is worth every penny. I bought a second copy as a gift for a friend.....I didn't dare loose my copy and besides the author really did deserve every penny for every copy sold on this lovely, lovely book.
Actually worth the money !.......2006-07-05
I really hesitated before I bought this book. I thought "how good could this POSSIBLY be for $150.00." All of my doubts were erased once I opened the cover. I am planning to build a large indoor arena with stable. Every single one of my questions were answered thoroughly and clearly in this book. Beyond that hundreds of details I had never even considered were brought to light in Eileen Wheelers book.
The detail of construction was extensive and comprehensive. This book is defenitely the Bible of stable and Arena Design!!!
Excellent and Comprehensive!.......2006-03-15
This book is worth every penny. Anyone wanting to build a great barn or arena should consider this book...especially appreciated the formulas and suggestions for figuring needs for heat, arena floor materials, lighting, etc. The author seemed to think of everything!

A FANTASTIC Easy Guide--Well Worth Your Purchase!!!.......2007-03-06
Gage Slade's review initially made me decide not to buy the Jumps, etc. book! Further insight changed my mind--and I'm glad!!! I advise all prospective buyers to ignore that cranky person's review and read on. Remember, this book has approx. 75 pages of information, so it's concentrated and doesn't waste your time. It is not an encyclopedia nor a college-level construction course. But in those pages are sketches with detailed measurements, shopping lists (another review falsely accused it of being vague with that!!!) and tool lists. It also gives great advice I would have never known. The jump section is fantastic and very detailed in its measurements of particularly-named wood pieces. We will be first-time jump makers and this book is just the helpful guide I wanted!!! The book has a small, detailed section on MEASURING and SETTING UP the LINES for a dressage arena which is very helpful. My club kids are starting to do dressage and this will help set something up quickly wherever we want. It will also help at the fair show that I help at when we set up the already-existing chain set. It understandably assumes you already have proper footing AND chosen arena fencing--just as the jump section assumes you have your choice of arena fencing. It DOES give good ideas on what they suggest for the dressage letters and dressage arena borders like chain or rails, and HOW TO place the stakes as well as measure the letter placement. But, good grief, its purpose is not to lecture on arena fencing (just like jump arena fencing is not). Once measured out, how hard is it to lay out chain...or lay out cinder blocks and boards ...or railroad ties? Choosing what arena border to have takes just a little simple homework: What do the big shows use? What is our budget? This will determine whether to buy the pricey mail-order sets or go down to the lumber store and buy the materials yourself. I suggest to the disgruntled buyer, Gage Slade, that they buy a book specifically on full construction of dressage arena FENCING because this book's title, JUMPS, etc., says what it is: mainly Jumps and some etc. Even so, each different jump, cavalletti, or wing standard gets about 1-2 pages each, so having 5 pages for setting up a dressage arena actually takes the majority!!! (btw: 9 pages were on stable equipment: Mounting Block, Sign Post, Saddle Stand/Storage Box, Portable Saddle Rack, and Grooming Box...also Jump Logos, Jump Image Painting). Buy The Book. It's Well Worth It :)
Great for ideas.......2005-09-21
Good visuals and details, especially when working with someone not familiar with jumps. Also includes constructing stable products, such as tack boxes, saddle racks, mounting blocks, etc. A few color photos would have enhanced the presentation.
great instructions on building jumps and other horse equipment.......2005-07-09
The majority of this book is about building a wide variety of jumps. Also covered is stable equipment and dressage arenas. Covers: Determining Your Jump Needs, Shopping for Materials, Tools You'll Need, Shopping Lists & Construction, Notes for Jumps and Other Equipment, Basic Schooling Standards, Deluxe Schooling Standards, Wing Standards, Slant Wing Standards, Jump Poles, 12' X 2'6" Panel, 12' X 2'6" Picket, 12' X 2'6" Gate, Coop, 8' Cavalletti, Rolltop, Flower Boxes, Brush Box, 12' X 12' RR Crossing Planks, Mounting Block, Sign Post, Saddle Stand/Storage Box, Portable Saddle Rack, Grooming Box, Paint Brightens the Ring, Logo Jumps, Setting Up a Dressage Arena, Recommended Reading, and Safety Checklist. Thorough instructions. Very usable.
dressage arena, yeah right.......2005-03-09
Do not buy this book if you are looking for ideas concerning dressage arena construction. It is ridiculous that "dressage arenas" is in the title. In a 71 page book, five pages involve dressage arenas. Most of that space discusses measuring out an arena. I was looking for a serious discussion about the constuction options available: wood, pvc, temporary, portable, etc. Our riding club needs to replace the barrier on two sand rings this year. If you need to build jumps this book might be helpful, for dressage arenas it is a waste of money.
Could Have Been Better.......2003-03-05
We recently purchased this book to help us make jumps for our pasture. Initially, it looks and sounds great. The shopping lists are great also. However, the instructions for cutting and constructing most of the jumps are very vague, ie, "cut 2x4's to size." There would be no mention of angles or length and sometimes the picture does not match what is happening in the instructions. Plan on doing a lot of figuring out as you go. It would be helpful if angles were specified and more detailed correct sketches were given. Also, sometimes the jump would be listed as a 2 foot jump, but the picture is 2'6" and the instructions weren't clear. Some of the jumps, especially the brush box, for safety, needs to be able to be tipped over and the feet required reworking.

Customer Reviews:
A great book for beginners!.......1999-12-19
I enjoyed this book. It spent two pages on every topic that's important to beginning artists. It never rambled on about useless, trivial information. The author focused in on clear definitions and illustrations. This reader was never confused by the book's precise method in handling complicated exercises. These exercises not only explained the material, but also led to completed works of art. The book also had a small, but vital glossary. The glossary helped to reiterate important concepts, such as scumbling, aerial perspective, fat-over-lean painting and high-key colors (just to name a few). Reading this book is like taking an art class. It focuses in on the most important concepts; and, it explains them in a brief, succinct manner.
Nice idea spoiled by carelessness.......1999-11-29
My soft-cover version of this highly-attractive book has plenty of nice features. The overall concept is sound, (although a little cursory in places, even for a book aimed at beginners); the instructional and informational content is generally useful and interesting; the illustrations and reproductions are excellent. There are even some health and safety tips that were very welcome.
So, what's the problem? The low rating I gave this book falls squarely at the feet of the editor(s). Simply put, there are far too many mistakes for a book of this size!
Completely wrong labels on a graph of oil content in paints makes for total confusion, especially if you're trying to come to terms with the "fat over lean" concept or similar technical ideas. Page cross-references that are incorrect are frustrating, but tolerable, in a monthly magazine or daily newspaper, but not in a textbook! There are numerous other little labelling, spelling, word-usage and grammatical errors, as well as a couple of invented words ("sawned off" is going to stick in my memory for a long time!) and a few "explanations" that don't explain anything.
I'm not sorry I bought the book, but it would be so much easier for my wife, who is just starting out in oil painting, and who is not a native user of English, if the information were a bit more reliable.
I purchased another Ray Smith book [Portraits, hardcover] and have no real criticisms of that book. I would consider buying others in the series, but this one is a little disappointing. A very beautiful book spoiled by sloppy editing. It's really a shame!
Really lays out the basics well.......1999-08-16
This is the kind of book that organizes the information you need to know in a logical and straight-forward manner. A great place to start for any aspiring artist.

Heir to Kodak's Darkroom Guides.......2007-08-29
Packed with technical info about general digital photography, this volume has a lot of info you won't find elsewhere about your digital camera. It is indespensible for the pro, or the serious amatuer photographer, especially those using today's advanced DSLR cameras. My only gripe is that it did not come with an 18% gray card. (Fortunately, I have an old one.) I am not sure that it was included and did not fall out of the book at some point. (I bought mine off the shelf at a conventional book store.) It did come with a white card.
Book Description
This is the one guide all photographers need to carry with them wherever they go! Conveniently sized for camera bag, purse, or pocket, it provides concise on-the-spot information for when you’re out on location: data on depth of field and exposure settings, advice on choosing filters and using flash, guidance on close-up shooting, facts on white balance, and more. Find out about caring for your digital camera in dusty or damp environments and the best battery types for specific conditions. Check out accessory and equipment lists before embarking on fieldwork, as well as options for storing images. With more than 20 charts and dials for quick reference, and with the quality that you’ve come to expect from any Kodak product, photographers will consider this a must-have.
