      Book Description

      A multidisciplinary approach to understanding the fundamentals of mass spectrometry for bacterial analysis

      From chemotaxonomy to characterization of targeted proteins, Identification of Microorganisms by Mass Spectrometry provides an overview of both well-established and cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques for identifying microorganisms. A vital tool for microbiologists, health professionals, and analytical chemists, the text is designed to help scientists select the most effective techniques for use in biomedical, biochemical, pharmaceutical, and bioterror defense applications.

      Since microbiological applications of mass spectrometry require a basic understanding of both microbiology and analytical chemistry, the editors have incorporated material from both disciplines so that readers from either field will come to understand the necessary principles of the other. Featuring contributions from some of the most recognized experts in both fields, this volume provides specific examples of fundamental methods as well as approaches developed in the last decade, including:
      * Metastable atom bombardment pyrolysis mass spectrometry
      * Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI)
      * MALDI time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) of intact bacteria
      * High-resolution Fourier transform mass spectrometry (FTMS)
      * Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry

      Identification of Microorganisms by Mass Spectrometry represents the most comprehensive and up-to-date work on the topic currently available. It is liberally illustrated with figures and tables and covers every aspect of spectrometric identification of microorganisms, including experimental procedures, various means of sample preparation, data analysis, and interpretation of complex mass spectral data.

      Download Description

      Identification of Microorganisms by Mass Spectrometry teaches readers to analyze microorganisms by mass spectrometry. Its scope ranges from chemotaxonomy (classification of organisms based on biochemical differences) to characterization of targeted proteins in applications that include basic biochemistry, medicine, and bioterrorism detection and prevention. It covers developments from about 1996, when MALDI (matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization ) experiments on whole cells were first reported, to the present. With all of the rapid developments in both microbiology and mass spectrometry over the last few years, this book fills a gap in teaching microbiologists and analytical chemists alike how to use the fundamentals of each others' fields.

              Book Description

              This book offers a wide range of readily reproducible methods for sampling, isolating, and culturing all of the major inflammatory cells involved in the pathophysiology of asthma and COPD. The collection of techniques detailed here involve biopsy and sampling of airway liquids such as sputum and exhaled gases such as nitric oxide. Also provided is a full range of methods for the isolation and characterization of cells and for the measurement of the major inflammatory markers, along with protocols for measuring many of the inflammatory mediators and enzymes released during lung inflammation. Among the more advanced techniques are the measurement of exhaled hydrocarbons and F2 isoprostanes, granulocyte pharmacodynamics in whole blood measured by flow cytometry, and tracing mediator trafficking in eosinophils using confocal microscopy. Comprehensive and highly practical, the methods presented in Human Airway Inflammation: Sampling Techniques and Analytical Protocols provide today's basic and clinical researchers all the major techniques for investigating airway inflammation, and powerfully illuminate many novel targets for emerging drugs.

                Hardbound. Advances in instrumentation and applied instrumental analysis methods have allowed scientists concerned with food and beverage quality, labeling, compliance, and safety to meet ever increasing analytical demands. Texts dealing with instrumental analysis alone are usually organized by the techniques without regard to applications. The biannual review issue of Analytical Chemistry under the topic of Food Analysis is organized by the analyte such as N and protein, carbohydrate, inorganics, enzymes, flavor and odor, color, lipids, and vitamins. Under 'flavor and odor' the subdivisions are not along the lines of the analyte but the matrix (e.g. wine, meat, dairy, fruit) in which the analyte is being determined. In "Instrumentation in Food and Beverage Analysis" the reader is referred to a list of 72 entries entitled "Instrumentation and Instrumental Techniques" among which molecular spectroscopy, chromatographic and other sophisticated

                        Book Description

                        In a wacky style similar to the films of Pedro Almodovar, the zany characters in this novel are treated with tenderness despite the chaos that surrounds them. Guillermo Zetto has lost his ambition and decides that a career in law, like his father's, no longer interests him. Instead, he is determined to lead a hidden and mediocre life behind the counter in an adult sex shop. But it is here that he discovers real beauty in the entertaining and disparate characters that patronize the store.

                        Muy en la onda de estética almodovariana, el autor trata a todos sus personajes divertidos con entrañable ternura de manera que el mensaje del libro es una visión un poco caótica pero esperanzada sobre el género humano. Guillermo Zetto decide que no le interesa dedicarse a la abogacía, la carrera impuesta por su padre. Siguiendo su vocación, que consiste en llevar una vida oscura y mediocre, busca ocupación en los anuncios por palabras del diario local. Lo que más se ajusta a sus nulas aspiraciones de fututo es un anuncio que busca dependiente para despachar artilugios y muñecas neumáticas en un sex shop. Guillermo consigue el puesto y entra así en contacto con la más divertida y disparatada fauna de la ciudad.
