Book Description
The only survival guide a middle school kid will ever need.
It can be the best of times. It can be the worst of times, too. Middle school happens at that tumultuous time in life when one’s not a teenager and not a little kid. Middle school means being a middle-aged kid. Expectations—from teachers, parents, friends, siblings—can all change dramatically, causing worry and concern even for the most laid-back student.
The Middle School Survival Guide covers every issue, inside school and out, from the most trivial concerns to the most serious issues that middle school students face today. Arlene Erlbach has assembled a teen advisory
board of 200 kids between fifth and tenth grade who give advice about topics from cracking a locker combination, to dealing with multiple teachers, to sex and dating.
Customer Reviews:
Great book for youth in Middle School.......2005-01-26
I purchased this book for my grandson who is now midway through fifth grade. He is struggling with many challenges that face youth just starting middle school including bullies, peer pressure to try new things and his first real crush. The straight forward but light way that Arlene Erlbach presents the topics were just what he needed. He has read the book through and still goes back to review some sections. I would recommend this book for all youth just starting the middle school years.
This is why we homeschool.......2004-05-01
I've put 5 kids through public school, and even those kids, now parents themselves, think this book is a bit over the top. I'd ask my 11 year old, but there's no way he'll be seeing it any time soon. This book is most appropriate for older kids, 9th grade and above. It's troubling that 12 year olds are quoted about issues such as "making out" and oral sex. It does contain some good advice about things like dealing with peers, dealing with sexual harrassment, handling the different school setting, and other things, but it isn't appropriate for middle schoolers, regardless of the title.
This is a great book!.......2003-08-25
This book is the perfect guide for any kid who's entering the challenging years of junior high. The author handles difficult topics in a humorous and informative way. Plus, there's lots of advice from other kids who have already been there. So along with the pens, notebooks and lunch, slip a copy of this survival guide into your middle-grader's backpack.
An absolute MUST!!!.......2003-08-22
I found this on a bookstore shelf by pure luck. After skimming through it and seeing the wide range of topics it covers, I grabbed two copies for neighbors entering Middle School next month.
MSSG is a plain-speaking book written with honesty and wit. It deals with pretty much any problem adolescents may face, not only in school, but in life: the harder work load in MS, acne, dating, drugs, handling bullies, sexual situations, divorce and much more. Let's face it. Kids don't always want to talk to their parents, even (maybe especially?) about important things. They ask their friends for advice. Now they have this book.
If you think you might benefit from this book, you WILL!!!
Book Description
Getting through high school and deciding what will come next can be a confusing process for teenagers. Unfortunately, counselors and administrators are often too busy to give students the individual attention they need to get the most out of the experience. The Real High School Handbook empowers students with practical information and real-life stories - about courses, grades, testing, communicating with teachers, and postgraduation options - essential to making informed decisions about their high school careers.

Courtesy of Teens Read Too.......2007-06-23
THE REAL HIGH SCHOOL HANDBOOK is just that: a guide to everything that a teen going into high school needs to know to survive and thrive.
The topics that this book cover include but are not limited to: credits and requirements, grades, test taking: SATs and ACTs, special education, extracurricular activities, how to juggle homework and employment, allying to college, and organizations that you can call when you need help. There are also quotes from students who did well in high school and also a few who wish they had worked harder.
Susan Abel Lieberman is a student mentor and has also written a few other self-help books.
This is a really insightful book and could be very useful for a nervous high school student. THE REAL HIGH SCHOOL HANDBOOK might be very motivating for a struggling student who thinks that school is a waste of time. There are many reasons given why you should work really hard in high school so that you can have a brighter future.

An Excellent Resource!.......1999-09-06
I bought this book a while ago, because it looked informative and interesting. (Not to mention that I will be starting high school next year!) I started to read it, and was very glad I had bought it. Of course it tells you all that usual stuff about doing what you want, finding out what you like, and stuff like that, but it also has very practical information. It even has other resources and places you can go for help. I really recommend this book. Read this book, it's worth it.
Informative, readable, and full of good advice........1998-02-10
Susan Abel Lieberman has written a book that should be on the shelf of all high-school students and their parents. The Real High School Handbook is filled with solid information and advice, and colorful examples from the lives of students. In an engaging conversational tone, Lieberman challenges her young readers to take responsibility for their own futures-- and on page after page, she shows them specific ways to do that. It's clear that Lieberman has spent a lot of time time with high school students and knows the ins and outs of the high school scene. She has heard it all from--"it's the teachers fault,"--to "I just can't do it." Her answers to students' familiar laments are good humored, and straightforward. She's almost certain to capture the attention of students complaining about teachers, when she writes,"Just as every batter doesn't face an equally good pitcher--or umpire--every student doesn't get an equally good teacher. Whether a teacher is good or not,'fair'or not, the student, like the batter, is the one being graded on what happens." The Real High School Handbook is a terrific bedside-table book. Students will find themselves turning to it again and again--when it's time to make summer plans, calculate GPA's, apply to college or a job. They'll also find it invaluable when they want encouragement and reassurance. The Real High School handbook is a much needed guide to success for all students!

Book Description
[This book] is a literary treasure, simultaneously a Beat novel, a great feat of storytelling, and a storehouse of educational wisdom. Herndon shows us, with great wit and good spirits, how good education can emerge in the most unexpected circumstances and how caring teachers can transform lives.
- Herbert Kohl
In How to Survive in Your Native Land James Herndon details classroom life and the inescapable realities of a school situation. This is a compelling vision of what really goes on in school and how the conventional school structure actually affects teaching and learning. The realities may be hard, but Herndon's humorous touch makes this book easy to read.
Customer Reviews:
If I Read this Again I'll Start Crying.......2007-09-22
James Herndon, in my opinion, has written the two best books about education that I have ever read. The Way It Spozed To Be and How to Survive in Your Native Land were used in many universities and colleges across the country in the 70s. As a now retired teacher, I look at what education has become in this country, how far we have wandered from the Herdon Days of alternative schools and teachers who were not afraid to do the right thing, and I weep.-- Sam Yulish, author of Where Have All the Hippies Gone? and The Hesitant Psychic.
Briliant, droll, true to life.......2006-05-25
Herndon at his best. In this charming -- if sometimes bawdy -- little book, Herdon brings his students alive. It's the details that are telling -- and school becomes more than school. It's a microcosm. Kids admonish each other to quit pestering the lizards as dozens of hands keep reaching into their home... A monster kite threatens the lunchtime gaggle of 7th grade girls... A dog is obsessed with an old tennis ball... Laugh, cry, think. Read this book.
Stranger in your own land.......2006-04-14
When I read this book, I was a crappy teacher in a crappy school in the South Bronx. Then I read it and read it, five or ten times, felt like someone had given me the key to the universe, almost got fired, and ended up in a better school but still not a much better teacher. I'm not sure if my goal in life is to become James Herndon or maybe just to meet him, if he is still living in San Francisco (he's listed in the phone book there.) When I give this book to other teachers, they tend to react with love and astonishment; when I give it to non-teachers, they don't really get it, although they tend to love his other great book, the Way it Spozed to Be. Presently, my copy is languishing in my principal's bookshelf, unread after four years.
How to Survive In Your Native Land.......2003-12-25
I bought a used copy perhaps 12 years ago. His writing has really stayed with me. Over the years I've read the book 3 times, called friends to read them chapters, given copies as gifts. I'm not an educator, I'm simply moved by the truth, humor and love in his writing. A treasure.
One of my all-time favorite books.......2001-02-10
This book really says it like it is. Even though written decades ago, the basic tenets it lays out regarding schools and life within them still ring true.
James Herndon is a top notch writer and a notable explorer in the field of education. He is one of my heroes.

Little Wisdom Beyond the Conventional.......2000-04-05
Overall this book suffers from trying to do too much in too few pages. The author attempts to run the gamut from overcoming boredom in high school to peer pressure to substance abuse to preparing for college. As a result there is very little depth provided on any one subject. The book raises many questions on every page but provides little wisdom beyond the conventional.
How to Survive High School would have been interesting if survival were used as a metaphor throughout the book, but it is not. It addresses teenagers but does so at an extremely naïve level. Most teens are too savvy for this material to be entertained or captivated by the advice extended.
Advice like, go to assemblies and pay attention, has no hope of achieving the desired results. Anecdotal information is taken from actual teen interviews but there are no fresh insights, no real-world tales to fan the flames of teen imagination.
Material in this book is not well organized. Although there is a decent index, a search for raising your grades came up empty. I knew there was a page that I had flagged on the topic of low grades and was surprised to see it was not in the index. But then, like a lot of the material in the book, the advice given was paper-thin. Low grades? Work harder!
I doubt that teens can suffer through insights like "Do not be surprised if starting high school causes stress." I would not recommend this book to anyone expecting a true survival guide. On the up side it does contain a collection of concerns that might help a parent trying to organize his/her thoughts about what their teens may need to deal with. No teen that I know, however, would be willing or patient enough to read this book cover to cover.

Sucks it's out of print.......2003-11-04
Man, this book is the best. It is full of timeless advice to get through Junior High alive. I wanted to get a new copy, but it's out of print. I want to start a petition to get this back in print. I read it now and I'm still cracking up. I seriously need a new copy of it though. Mines been with me since fifth grade and its falling into pieces.
Anyway, awesome, funny, gut crackingly hilarious book. Buy it for your kid on Ebay or something. They will love you forever, and the world will be a better place, all because of you.
Funny, informative, and all that good stuff........1998-08-24
I first got this book from a book order form in 6th grade. It's hilarious. It really did help me out in Junior High/Middle School. I'm in high school now, nearly a graduate. It's for anyone who needs a laugh or more when they're bored or right down depressed. It got me out of trouble with teachers in middle school because I cracked them up with this book. And yes, some stuff in here actually work.
