i ordered this item with expediated service so i could get this quickly, instead they waited a whole four days before they sent it and i never received my item, i was very disappointed in there lack of service, i dont understand why your going to charge extra for quicker delivery charge and then dont send it out at all, they told me to check the usps website to see if it was delivered, i could not get any information from them, i have yet to receive my book, i purchased my book at the school store because i had a big test coming up and i had to cram study because of this, i will never purchase anything from this carrier again

Not the bargain you imagine.......2007-09-22
The price compared to the bookstore is great, but after purchasing and taking to class I realize why. It's missing several chapters at the end of the book. The hardcover you find in bookstores has at least 3 or more chapters. If your class doesn't go that far, then you're good. If it does...well then you're going to have problems. Everything else is fine, but you will be missing key information.

Antibiotic Resistance: Origins, Evolution, Selection and Spread Chairman: Stuart B. Levy 1997 Over the last 50 years, the rapid increase in the use of antibiotics, not only in people, but also in animal husbandry and agriculture, has delivered a selection unprecedented in the history of evolution. Consequently, society is facing one of its gravest public health problems-the emergence of infectious bacteria with resistance to many, and in some cases all, available antibiotics. This book brings together a multidisciplinary group of experts to discuss this problem. It begins by examining the origins of resistance and goes on to look at how the use of antibiotics in human medicine and farming/agriculture has selected for resistant bacteria. Separate chapters describe the evolution of resistance determinants and how these are spread both within and between bacterial species. Finally, the book contains discussions on strategies for countering the threat of antibiotic resistance. A major re-thinking of our approach to the treatment of infectious diseases is proposed-that antibiotic resistance should be seen as a problem created by the disruption of normal microbial ecology. To restore efficacy to earlier antibiotics, and to maintain the success of new antibiotics that are introduced, we need to use these drugs in a way that ensures an ecological balance that favours the predominance of susceptible bacteria.

Dengue fever is becoming more prevalent and is regarded as an ‘emerging disease’. After an initial infection with the virus, which is transmitted by mosquitoes, lifelong immunity develops to the viral serotype that caused the infection. However, there are four dengue serotypes and subsequent infection with a different one can lead to dengue haemorrhagic fever/dengue shock syndrome, which can be fatal. There is no currently available effective treatment or vaccine.
This book brings together an international group of experts on dengue and related flaviviruses to examine, critically, current knowledge regarding the dengue virus, the host response and the pathogenesis of dengue haemorrhagic fever and to explore the opportunities to develop new treatments. Issues addressed include the molecular biology of the dengue virus with particular emphasis on its structure and function and on the targeting of virus proteins by potential anti-viral agents. The interaction of the dengue virus with host target cells and the specific receptors on these cells is reviewed. Finally, the book outlines the options for treatment of dengue and dengue haemorrhagic fever, paying particular attention to ways in which vector, host and environment can play a critical role in the spread of this disease. A unique feature of this series is the in-depth discussion sections at the end of each chapter: these record the questions, comments and opinions of the experts in the field concerning all areas of research into dengue viruses and potential treatments.

The issue of self/non-self discrimination amongst lymphocytes is of vital importance in our understanding of the basic processes of immune recognition. Over the past decades there have been considerable advances in our knowledge of the role of the thymus in "educating" T cells to distinguish self from non-self, and recently there has been a greater appreciation of the importance of immunological tolerance in the periphery during the development of immune responses. Issues as diverse as apoptosis, cell signalling and cell cycle progression, and expression of cytokines have all influenced recent research on the consequences of immunological recognition of foreign antigens. It is clear that the immune system has developed an intricate process for regulating its responses to non-self antigens and, more importantly, self antigens in potential autoimmune settings. This book brings together scientists working on all aspects of immunological tolerance. A number of chapters discuss basic mechanisms of tolerance, including mechanisms of peripheral T cell tolerance, molecular and genetic mechanisms for maintaining self tolerance, partial T cell activation, and the role of apoptosis in tolerance. Several chapters deal specifically with costimulation and tolerance. Finally, careful consideration is given to the clinical applications of our understanding of immunological tolerance. Topics discussed include T cell activation during tumour therapy, anti-antigen specific immune suppression, tolerance in infectious diseases, tolerance during pregnancy and tolerance during various autoimmune diseases.

I liked this book because it explained difficult micro concepts in an understandable fashion. I liked the illustrations in the book and the parasitic microbes was most interesting. I also found the following which I got on amazon outstanding:
