This is not a space filling molecular model set like the picture on the box implies. What you get is a set of jacks and plastic piping like the straws on juice boxes. A model built from this kit looks like a tinker toy. Still, I found the kit extremely enlightening.

The jacks represent the different geometric shapes that single bonded, double bonded, and triple bonded atoms configure into - tetrahedron shapes, bi-pyramidal shapes, and octahedron shapes. You have to cut the different coloured plastic tubes with an exacto-knife to given lengths which represent the radius of the atom you are working with - a black tube is cut to 1.67 inches to represent one radius of a single bonded carbon atom. This attaches to a jack, which is the connector, and you attach another length of tube to another prong on the jack for the atom which is bonded to that side of the carbon - it could be a red tube for oxygen.

The set required me to do research into advanced structural concepts of atomic bonding - i.e. - sp orbitals, sp2 orbitals, sp3 orbitals - and has lead me to an area which I can research in more depth later. In this way it has been very enlightening.

Although this set is not what I expected or wanted, I am glad that I ended up with it because it has revealed in a very simple way the complexity of moleculare structure and has taught me a lot about quantum mechanical structure of molecules.

I got this two days ago, which is not really long enough to effectively judge its usefulness to the course, but I already have some definite opinions. First, the picture given implies that this is a space-filling model kit, which it is not. You are given a series of tubes and connectors, representing bonds rather than atoms. This has potential to be very useful, but it was not quite what I was expecting. The tubes, are all one length, and must be cut to the appropriate size using the included scale. Double bonds are depicted only by bond length, not visible double bonds, which is rather confusing visually. Most annoying, though, is the metallic coating that represents carbon, nitrogen or oxygen bonded to hydrogen. These colors flaked off immediately when I built the first model, sticking to my hands and making my ethylene a model of impossibly bonded hydrogen, as it went from black to white. I'm ordering the Prentice Hall kit, though I am keeping this one should the rumors that this is the only way to build large cyclic molecules prove true.

5 out of 5 stars Organic Representations.......2000-06-16

This set is the perfect set for any first year organic student. It gives a perfect representation of interatomic distances which is not possible or accounted for with other sets. It also allows for the compostion of cyclopropane and othe larger cyclic compounds. A great compliment to organic study

Book Description

How did we become the linguistic, cultured, and hugely successful apes that we are? Our closest relatives--the other mentally complex and socially skilled primates--offer tantalizing clues. In Tree of Origin nine of the world's top primate experts read these clues and compose the most extensive picture to date of what the behavior of monkeys and apes can tell us about our own evolution as a species.

It has been nearly fifteen years since a single volume addressed the issue of human evolution from a primate perspective, and in that time we have witnessed explosive growth in research on the subject. Tree of Origin gives us the latest news about bonobos, the "make love not war" apes who behave so dramatically unlike chimpanzees. We learn about the tool traditions and social customs that set each ape community apart. We see how DNA analysis is revolutionizing our understanding of paternity, intergroup migration, and reproductive success. And we confront intriguing discoveries about primate hunting behavior, politics, cognition, diet, and the evolution of language and intelligence that challenge claims of human uniqueness in new and subtle ways.

Tree of Origin provides the clearest glimpse yet of the apelike ancestor who left the forest and began the long journey toward modern humanity.

5 out of 5 stars Ideas that snap, crackle and pop.......2004-12-07

I checked this book out of the local library many weeks ago, having come across it via a desultory shelf scan. I was so engrossed by the book, I kept renewing it, then returned it to the library and bought my own copy.

Each chapter got my synapses firing with interesting information about how the evolution of human culture might be inferred from primate behaviors and primate and human physiology. I scribbled numerous notes that started with "I wonder if ... " or "Is it possible that ...", using the data from the authors as jumping-off points.

For example, before I read the book, I'd been wondering if it'd be possible to identify and track back as far as possible in time a collection of aphorisms that all cultures shared, such as "the way to a man's heart is through his stomach," to see what might be learned about our cultural evolution - and how closely our "culture" was actually tied to our physiological hard-wiring. Lo and behold, one of the articles in Tree of Origin appears to offer a heart-through-stomach theory for how humans came to pair off as couples.

The discussion about the size of our neocortex (neocortices?) and its relationship to the size of social groups we can "manage" expanded another line of thinking on my part about what might really be at the roots of what we call racism and of our propensity toward bloody conflict. It's possible that one core cause is our brains' maximum capacity for social complexity, rather than "just" a learned behavior that one can discard through an intellectual process.

The book reminded me of Desmond Morris' books, The Human Ape and The Human Zoo, both of which I also found fascinating.

Now that I own this book, I can re-read it and mark it up as I wish!

5 out of 5 stars Essays on our roots.......2002-08-27

The greatest scientific quest is finding our place in Nature. This leading primatologist has collected a series of essays on primate behaviour in an outstanding effort aimed at answering that question. De Waal's credentials as a student of chimpanzee behaviour are well-known. He's joined here by researchers of equal status in presenting the most recent findings in the field. De Waal states in the Introduction that research in human behaviour falls into two camps - human beings are an entirely unique species or human evolutionary roots are visible in many of our related species. He and his fellow essayists adhere to the second theme, the one that has gained significant adherence over the past several decades of research. "The proliferation of research on monkeys and apes . . . has influenced the way we look at our place in nature."

This collection brings to view much of that research, a compendium long overdue in de Waal's estimation. His team provides new insights into primate behaviour. They combine the research finding with speculations on how modern monkeys and apes reflect the evolutionary roots of our own relations with each other. The topics covered show the impact of environment, the patterns of sex and reproduction, social organization and cognition. The collection addresses the "process of hominization" leading from ape-like ancestors to modern humans. If all this sounds like a series of lofty scientific pedantry, fear not. All the authors present their information in open, conversational style. Although the result of a scholarly seminar, the writing throughout is clear and unpretentious. Anyone interested in their evolutionary roots or in the status of the research will find this collection rewarding.

The quality of this compilation makes choice of place difficult, if not impossible. Each author presents new information and delightful analyses of the importance of the findings. Craig Stanford discusses the role of meat eating [not hunting] in building social relationships. Studied closely in the field in both ape and human societies, meat distribution and sex have a clear evolutionary role. Richard Wrangham carries this theme a step further in his analysis of the social role of food preparation - cooking. He stresses how early cooking must have emerged in hominid evolution and what its likely social impact was in our development. Richard Byrne extends this analysis to describe several forms of food acquisition and processing among various primate species.

If any issue transcends the others in the role of humanity, it is that of human cognition. To those contending only human cognitive abilities are worth studying, several authors respond that "evolution does not proceed by inspired jumps . . . but by accretion of beneficial variants" over time. In order to comprehend the evolutionary path of cognition, definitions are of primary importance. Cognition is here defined as "a species' package of information-processing capabilities" encompassing individual, social, technical and other skills. Robin Dunbar shows how these skills were likely reinforced through selectively chosen group size. He examines variations in primate group size and how these impact social behavior. Charles Snowdon addresses the mainstay of human "uniqueness" in an outline of language
development. In the final essay, William McGrew considers the question of "culture." What is it and how was it derived? McGrew refers to eight criteria, developed many years ago by Alfred Koeber, and applies them in a historical context. McGrew emphasizes that humans are not the only social species. Language enhanced abilities inherited from our predecessors.

This book addresses older ideas and breaks new ground. With a strong foundation in the intensive primate studies achieved during the past three decades, the collection calls for further studies in the field. What these will bring to light will increase our knowledge of where we fit in Nature. There are assuredly many surprises remaining to be revealed. Will you help search for answers to some of these questions?

          Book Description

The book presents the mathematical tools used to deal with problems related to slow rarefied flows, with particular attention to basic concepts and problems which arise in the study of micro- and nanomachines. The mathematical theory of slow flows is presented in a practically complete fashion and provides a rigorous justification for the use of the linearized Boltzmann equation, which avoids costly simulations based on Monte Carlo methods. The book surveys the theorems on validity and existence, with particular concern for flows close to equilibria, and discusses recent applications of rarefied lubrication theory to micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS). It gives a general acquaintance of modern developments of rarefied gas dynamics in various regimes with particular attention to low speed microscale gas dynamics.

Senior students and graduates in applied mathematics, aerospace engineering, and mechanical mathematical physics will be provided with a basis for the study of molecular gas dynamics. The book will also be useful for scientific and technical researchers engaged in the research on gas flow in MEMS.

            Book Description

The aim of this book is to present the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation in a self-contained manner, even for those readers who have no familiarity with special and general relativity. Though an attempt is made to present the basic concepts in a complete fashion, the style of presentation is chosen to be appealing to readers who want to understand how kinetic theory is used for explicit calculations. The book will be helpful not only as a textbook for an advanced course on relativistic kinetic theory but also as a reference for physicists, astrophysicists and applied mathematicians who are interested in the theory and applications of the relativistic Boltzmann equation.

                Book Description

The intersection of probability and physics has been a rich and explosive area of growth in the past two decades, specifically covering such subjects as percolation theory, random walks, interacting particle systems, and various topics related to statistical mechanics. In the last several years, substantial progress has been made in a number of directions: fluctuations of 2-dimensional growth processes, Wulf constructions in higher dimensions for percolation, Potts and Ising models, classification of random walks in random environments, the introduction of the stochastic Loewner equation, the rigorous proof of intersection exponents for planar Brownian motion, and finally the proof of conformal invariance for critical percolation on the triangular lattice. This volume consists of a collection of invited articles, written by some of the most distinguished probabilists in the above-mentioned areas, most of whom were personally responsible for advances in the various subfields of probability. All of the articles are an outgrowth of the Fourth Brazilian School of Probability, held in Mambucaba, Brazil, August 2000. Contributors: K. Alexander * J.M. Azaïs * J. van den Berg * T. Book Description

Phase transitions occur in several processes of physical and engineering interest. This book deals with the analysis of models of solid-liquid systems. Its main purpose is to offer an introduction to the classical Stefan problem and to some of its physically motivated extensions.

The presentation is characterized by a strict interplay between physics and mathematics. Macroscopic, mesoscopic and two-scale models for Stefan-type problems lead to the formulation of initial and boundary -value problems for nonlinear PDEs Their analysis is developed in the framework of Sobolev spaces. Nucleation and surface tension phenomena are also discussed and new results are presented. All the analytical tools used are illustrated, to make the volume self-contained. Special concern is devoted to variational inequalities, to the recently developed technique of compactness by strict convexity.

This book is aimed at students and researchers in applied mathematics and in nonlinear PDEs, and also at physicists and engineers with mathematical background.

                    Book Description

This book examines in detail the correlations for the two-dimensional Ising model in the infinite volume or thermodynamic limit and the sub- and super- critical continuum scaling limits. Steady progress in recent years has been made in understanding the special mathematical features of certain exactly solvable models in statistical mechanics and quantum field theory, including the scaling limits of the 2-D Ising (lattice) model, and more generally, a class of 2-D quantum fields known as holonomic fields.

New results have made it possible to obtain a detailed nonperturbative analysis of the multi-spin correlations. In particular, the book focuses on deformation analysis of the scaling functions of the Ising model. This self-contained work also includes discussions on Pfaffians, elliptic uniformization, the Grassmann calculus for spin representations, Weiner--Hopf factorization, determinant bundles, and monodromy preserving deformations.

This work explores the Ising model as a microcosm of the confluence of interesting ideas in mathematics and physics, and will appeal to graduate students, mathematicians, and physicists interested in the mathematics of statistical mechanics and quantum field theory.

                          Book Description

A comic genius and a wicked delight--The Decameron revisited.

Generations of children have been brought up on La Fontaine's fables. Only an absentminded or perversely liberal parent, however, would leave the same author's Contes et nouvelles en vers lying around the nursery. The Contes were the fruit of La Fontaine's wicked delight in the saucy tales he found in Boccaccio's Decameron, Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, Rabelais's Pantagruel, and elsewhere. Marital misdemeanors, resourceful females, and addled males proved the inspiration for some rich, inventive plotting. The stories' impact at the time is attested not only by the difficulties their author incurred in gaining election to the French Acadmie but also by the thriving trade in pirated editions after French printers failed to obtain official license to issue them. In the three hundred years that followed, the Contes were relegated to the least-accessible library shelves, and even today there barely exists an English translation of the complete set. France has over the centuries produced notable comic geniuses; the best known are perhaps Rabelais and Molire. On the evidence of these hitherto neglected Tales in Verse, La Fontaine clearly deserves a place with them.
