      Book Description

The Ascent of Humanity is a radical exploration of the history and future of civilization from a unique perspective: the human sense of self. Eisenstein traces all of the converging crises of our age to a common source, which he calls Separation. It is the ideology of the discrete and separate self that has generated these crises; therefore, he argues, nothing less than a "revolution in human beingness" will be sufficient to transform our relationship to each other and the planet. And this revolution is underway already. In all realms of human endeavor, an Age of Reunion is emerging out of the birth-pangs of a planet in crisis. The range and depth of Eisenstein's thesis is breath-taking. Encompassing science, religion, spirituality, technology, economics, medicine, education, and more, he details a vast paradigm shift reflecting a more fundamental shift in the human sense of self. Even in this dark hour, he says, a more beautiful world is possible -- but not through the extension of millennia-old methods of management and control. The convergence of crises is revealing the final bankruptcy of those methods. Soon, he says, we will abandon the Babelian effort to build a tower to Heaven, as we realize that the sky is all around us already. Then, we will turn our efforts to creating a new kind of civilization, a conscious civilization designed for beauty rather than height.

An awe-inspiring new work, for which the author most certainly deserve to profit. A truthful, lucid assessment and heartening vision for the beautiful world we know is possible after the inevitable Dark Night of the Collective Soul. How refreshing and rejuvenating in a time and place that is altogether distracted and saddening! In the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson, "I rubbed my eyes a little, to see if this sunbeam were no illusion; but the solid sense of the book is a sober certainty. It has the best merits, namely, of fortifying and encouraging."

"The Ascent of Humanity" explores the divine world that we are each a part of. Reading it, you start to look at every aspect of your life differently. The beautiful world described in this book is not only "possible"; it already exists!

Eisenstein convincingly develops the thesis that humanity has succumbed to the dismal end game of the Technological and Scientific Programs. He describes the Scientific Program as the attempt to understand every phenomenon through the application of the Scientific Method -- extending reductionism, measurement, classification, and enumeration inappropriately to aspects of existence or relationships where they do not apply. The Technological Program seeks to control nature, and thereby often disrupts it through unintended consequences. The usual, and usually incorrect, response to these blunders consists of more technology; more control. He argues that cooperation between life forms may prove much more important to evolution than competition. He shows how the prevailing materialistic world view, one seeking to isolate Man from hostile nature, colours seemingly objective scientific theory.

By focusing on self organizing systems of increasing complexity, he spotlights how matter literally tends to "come alive". The Divine exists not as a remote, possibly disinterested deity, but rather in every bit of the extant World.

The time has come for Humanity's next big step. We need to recognize that only imaginary, arbitrary boundaries divide the individual from the rest of the Universe. The "out there" and the "in here" exist only as concepts, not as valid categories delimiting our physiological and mental domains. We live in a world of abundance, where cooperation, not a paranoid "me vs. the hostile other" perspective should inform our philosophy.

This book might just catalyze a paradigm shift affecting science, economics, psychology, and theology. You will find it much easier to read than this review, and a lot more fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars A Book to Savor and Thoughtfully Consider.......2007-09-07

I bought this book soon after the original television program was first broadcast and it's one I re-read often -- it remains one of my favorites. Although it is a very faithful (almost word-for-word and image-for-image) presentation of the material in the series, to have the information in a book to read at one's own pace (instead of being forced to absorb information at the pace of the television production), to carefully consider what Dr. Bronowski says, and to see what (if anything) it means to the reader makes the book an almost indispensable companion to the series.

As has been pointed out in earlier reviews, the high impact of this book (and of the television series) is the passion Dr. Bronowski brings to the material, how it's clear he truly believed that it is necessary for everyone to understand how the development of society is the product of generations of people pursuing knowledge ("science"), and that this understanding is critical to the future of civilization...the scientific imagination, standing always at the edge of the unknown and unsure, versus absolutism and dogma.

Now that the television series has been attractively remastered and is now available to the general public, the book has an even greater utility. The captions on the DVDs are very poorly done, to the extent that some of the errors make significant changes in Dr. Bronowski's statements and points. It's clear that whoever prepared the captions did not refer to the shooting script OR TO THIS BOOK! In other words, the book is important to correct errors in the captions. If one needs the captions this book is a valuable resource to ensure the viewer gets the correct words and, therefore, understands what Dr. Bronowski is presenting.

      5 out of 5 stars Remarkable!.......2006-08-09

If you're looking for a book that will show you how man made it from day 1 to the present, while encomapssing ALL disciplines and not science alone, you've found the right book! It's is incredible how simply and interestengly Mr. Bronowski has accomplished such a feat. You won't be able to put it down!

5 out of 5 stars Inspired many copiers but is still the best..........2006-06-17

Previous reviews don't do Bronowski justice. He began as a mathematician; but after being sent to Hiroshima, as part of a team studying the aftereffects of the nuclear blast, he switched to biology. He was warm and articulate. A poet himself, he was one of the few people who truly understood the English poet William Blake, although (unlike most of his writing) his essays about Blake could use some explaining themselves. He was a highly moral man and did two original things you don't see many others even attempting: He saw the "doing" of science as an act every bit as creative as composing a symphony or writing a poem -- and he explained it in that way -- and he sought a structure for rationalizing morality and ethical behavior that did not rely upon religious precepts. The Ascent of Man is a very personal work, and it says so in its subtitle. It pretty much echos word for word what Jacob Bronowski spoke extemporaneously as he was sent around the world to the places he needed to be in order to explain the ideas he needed to express as he filmed his material for public television. Ironically, I said that very badly: I meant that HE could explain very complex notions with terrific elegance and simplicity. Period. By the way, the process of making the series for TV must have taken a toll, as JB died not long after completing the necessary travels. The Ascent of Man is all excellent but has many especially moving moments. Only one example occurred when JB walked fully clothed and shod into a pond at Auschwitz in acknowledgment of family and friends and fellow countrymen whose ashes were dumped there by fascists who laid claim to a handle on absolute certainty. Read this topnotch book, then find more by him. And if you're thirsty for more, try a little Loren Eisely as well. The accomplishments of humankind as explained by thoughtful scientists can prove wonderfully exhiliarating.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, but don't expect Cosmos.......2005-08-16

This is one of the first, and one of the better, history of science sorts of series. If you enjoy history and science, then its worth watching. But the program, and to a lesser extent the book, in my mind suffer from a serious flaw: namely; that the author can not seem to divorce himself from his own religious views, which intrude at a number of times in the program. How can I take someone seriously who is speaking about archeological history, while at the same time speculating about the Biblical conquest of Jericho? There is a disconnect here that leaves you wondering. One can always quibble about what major scientific advances are noteworthy, and different authors have seized upon various individuals; but we have in this series nothing out of the ordinary. Looking at "Cosmos" or "The Day the Universe Changed" is much more fulfilling, from an intellectual standpoint, but its still worth purchasing and enjoying.

5 out of 5 stars Is available on DVD.......2005-01-01

This series has been available on DVD for about 2 years or so from Ambrose Video. The price is high.

      Book Description

The first translation of a previously unknown Aztec codex and its initiatory teachings for 2012

      • Discloses the potential for great spiritual awakening offered at the end of the Aztec calendar cycle

      • Presents the only existing English-language transcription of the Aztec codex, with line-by-line commentary

      • Contains the epic poetry and metaphysical insights of Beat poet Marty Matz (1934–2001

In 1961 an unknown Aztec codex was revealed to Beat poet and explorer Marty Matz by a Mazatec shaman in the mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico. Originally intended for dramatic performance, this codex presents a profound metaphysical teaching describing how the end of time will bring about a visionary ascent. At the behest of his Mazatec teacher, Matz transcribed this pictorial codex into a literary form that would preserve its initiatory teachings and reveal its secret meanings to a wider audience.Pyramid of Fire is an epic poem that provides a vehicle to transport the initiate into the higher realms of consciousness. It represents a barely surviving thread of teachings that have been passed down in secret since the time of the Spanish Conquest. Revealed are the techniques by which man is transported to the stellar realm after death via the solar energy within what the ancients called the “serpent of consciousness.” Line-by-line commentary by Matz and John Major Jenkins provides insights into the perennial philosophy contained in the codex and its relevance to our times.

4 out of 5 stars Pyramind of fire.......2007-03-09

Since I dabbled in mind altering drugs in the 60's and 70's I could understand the words and thoughts of Jenkins. Since I first heard of 2012 in Graham Handcocks "Fingerprints of the Gods" I have sought out books on the subject. I have narrowed my reading to the Central American and Hindu trane of thought. I like Jenkins so much I purchased Maya Cosmogenesis 2012. Both should be read by all.

5 out of 5 stars DiaGnosis: A very important document.......2007-02-18

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Beat generation poet Marty Matz explored remote areas of Mexico and learned to speak the Mazatec language. He gained the trust of a Mazatec shaman, who showed him an unknown codex, and also explained to him the meaning behind the pictograms. Marty made a translation and recited it in the poetry clubs of San Francisco. The final page got lost over the years, but John Major Jenkins located a recording of one of Marty's recitals and reconstructed the whole translation.

All other codices that have survived have been interpreted solely by non-indigenous scholars, with the exception of the Popul vuh of the Maya, which was written into a word form from what was originally a pictorial document. This means that the Pyramid of Fire is a unique insight into the philosophy of the Aztecs, which turns out to be fascinating. The true meaning of sacrifice, for example, is simply a transcending of the ego - a self-sacrifice. The metaphorical pictures were misunderstood and resulted in the gory mass sacrifices of prisoners for which the Aztecs later became famous. In fact, the Aztec philosophy turns out to be very similar to that which was known to G.I. Gurdjieff, following his travels across the near East and Asia.

The Pyramid of Fire reveals that the Aztecs had a spiritual technology similar to the Kundalini yoga of the Hindus, in which Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent, is shown to be an identical concept. Though some have suggested this in the past, they lacked the evidence - now we have it.

The last page of the codex reveals that the final New Fire ceremony will bring a fire of purification that will burn away the remains of mortal desires and illusions, that will be the end of obscurity - the obscurity imposed by Tezcatlipoca - the Smoking Mirror, or obsidian mirror. This is a very similar concept to the end-time vision of St. Paul "For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face" (1 Cor 13 v.12) or alternatively, "through a glass darkly". Since Jenkins has already reconstructed the meaning of the New Fire ceremony as a tradition for tracking precession (see Maya Cosmogenesis 2012), and that it was adapted at Chichen Itza (the pyramid of Kukulcan) to correlate with the Mayan end-date of 2012, then it seems that the Quetzalcoatl-Kukulcan-Kundalini teachings are to help prepare mankind for the current time-window earmarked by 2012, when we are due to confront The Other.

5 out of 5 stars Hidden wisdom of Aztec codex.......2005-09-12

John Major Jenkins is best known for his facinating work on the Mayan calendar, such as 'Maya Cosmogenesis 2012' and 'Galactic Alignment'. In this book, he explores the Aztec culture, and in particular an unknown codex discovered by his co-author friend Marty Matz, a 'beat poet' of the 1950's generation. In the book Jenkins provides a complete listing of the 13 page codex, along with his own commentary on its meaning. In addition, there is an autobiographical novella written by Marty, which reminded me of the writings of Carlos Castaneda. Jenkins is convinced of the authenticity of the codex and its part in the 'perennial philosophy'.

I was particularly intrigued by the parallels of the writings of the codex with those of other esoteric sources, particularly the writings of George Gurdjieff, Gnostic, Hermetic. Kabbalah, Hebrew and Christian scripture. Jenkins seems to have a profound grasp of the esoteric meaning behind the writings of the Mayan, Aztec and other Meso-America cultures and their part in the perennial philosophy of the ages. Jenkins is a gifted writer and scholar and I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

                    5 out of 5 stars Interesting book.......2000-06-24

It is one of my favourite books. Good for GCE and other grd 10 examinations. Contains good cartoons that make the serious stuff interesting. But also contains plenty of information and practice questions! I am searching for a new copy of the book here in India.

3 out of 5 stars A rather diverse collection of shorties........2003-05-09

Dyson has put together a collection of short stories on the verge of brilliance and maybe trying to be a bit to clever. The book kicks off in good form with "we who walk thru walls" with left you thinking wow I did not expect that, but with "love in the time of Molyneux" I had to re-read it cause I just missed the point. The darker side of the collection with "City Deep" which will give you a paranoid feeling everytime you ride the underground rail. An A-level art professor gets an underachieving new art student with very little talent but when the boy paints a picture of the story title "a slate roof in the rain" little does the Professor know how much he'll get to know the drawing. My favorite story was "the engine of desire" which happens to be the longest story of a mercenary hired by a prince who has a collection of oddities,to find a mechanical woman with the ability to satisfy sexually. This story was sheer genius.

On a lighter note "the cash oracle" was pretty funny. The story of a timid feeble man who is afraid to ask a beautiful woman out on a date, resorts to his ATM machine when he discovers that along with cash it also dispenses advice. This story made me laugh thinking of the people behind him cueing up to make a with draw and this nervous sweaty individual hogging the machine just to have the machine tell him what would happen tonight. Pretty funny stuff.

So all in all not a bad collection a couple fillers "the maze" and the last story in the novel are not worthy of a mention cause they were just dull. I would like to read a full novel from Dyson, for it seemed the longer the story the better. A good collection,I recomend it.

4 out of 5 stars 1st Class Anthology of Strange Short Stories.......2002-08-19

My girlfriend lent me this explaining that the author, Jeremy Dyson, was one of the writers for the cult English comedy series A League of Gentleman (not to be confused with Alan Moore's the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and that I would really enjoy it. Being a big fan of Edgar Allan Poe and Phillip K Dick I am always on the look out for a good short story anthology which comes at the world from a strange oblique angle and this book certainly didn't disappointment.

From the opening tale "we who walk through walls" you get a very distinct feeling of Dyson's style of story telling. Almost all the protoganists are men struggling to overcome some insecurity, affliction or forget some past transgression. His characters are brilliantly human, well fleshed out and captivating.

All the stories seem to share a common setting not unlike Poe or Neil Gaiman or David Lynch, where seemingly mundane situations are approached with a sinister taint or twist and where drama is produced in the clash between what we expect and the ace that Dyson has hidden up his sleeve. You wouldn't go so far to call it fantasy or horror but definitely all the stories have that "something is not quite right here" feel to them.

The only story that I haven't liked so far was "At Last" as it didn't seem to deliver to strangeness that so characterises the other stories. I haven't finished reading the book yet but I would definitely recommend it to any fan of Neil Gaiman, Edgar Allan Poe and Roald Dahl's adult short stories.

This book is a great read especially if you are like me and generally don't get much time to read. It's a great book for the morning bus trip, train ride or commute to work. You can escape the mudanity of your journey be sinking you teeth into one of Dyson's tasty morsels.

4 out of 5 stars Poignant, Ruthless, and Sinister.......2002-02-26

With this twelve story collection of mostly unpublished short fiction, Dyson exhibits a decided bent for cosmic justice with a more than a twist of the supernatural. The closest comparison I can make is to some of Roald Dahl's short (adult) fiction, but with an added fantastical element. Dyson tackles primal themes of lust, sex, love, jealousy, temptation, and greed with a deft touch that is both poignant, ruthless, and like the rabbit on the cover, sinister. Many of the stories treat similar themes with slightly different approaches. In three of the stories, "A Slate Roof in the Rain," "The Engine of Desire," "All in the Telling", nasty exploitative men get their just deserts in almost revenge fantasy narratives. Two stories, "City Deep" and "The Maze," feature neurotically obsessive lone men who are consumed by their manias and disappear into the bowels of the earth. Another two stories, "We Who Walk Through Walls" and "Love In the Time of Molyneux," feature antagonists whose hubris is dealt with appropriately.

Almost every story is tinged with an element of sadness or despair that, on the whole, makes the book a bit gloomy-indeed half the stories end with their central figure either crying, dead, mad, or in total despair over their lives. It's possible Dyson (or his editor) recognized this cumulative weight, and purposely placed the one story with a conventionally happy ending ("The Cash Point Oracle") in the middle. In any event, anyone who enjoys short fiction should check out this promising debut collection.

5 out of 5 stars A valuable history of the supernatural horror film.......2001-06-18

It is clear upon reading this book that Jeremy Dyson has a genuine love of its subject matter. His knowledge springs from extensive research, yes, but is presented in a way which makes it clear that he enjoyed every minute of it. He summarises events amongst various film studios succinctly, yet includes very interesting in-depth information about the films themselves. True, objectivity was not a major issue here - Dyson's opinions are scattered throughout - but it only makes the read more interesting and encourages the reader to develop opinions of their own. All in all a very interesting and informative read for fans of the genre.
