Despite the fact that Iraqi forces were being systematically destroyed by the allied air campaign, the Iraqis were nonetheless able to mount a rather sophisticated ground attack and seize the Saudi town with relative ease. The Iraqi attack came as an absolute surprise despite the coalition's technological advantages in reconnaissance equipment and the impressive array of coalition forces defending the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Saddam Hussein attempted to use the surprise attack into Saudi Arabia as a method to advance several strategic-level political and military objectives. First, he was able to use the attack as a propaganda mechanism to rally domestic and Arab nationalistic support. Next, he endeavored to destabilize or destroy the coalition arrayed against him. Lastly, he sought to dampen American enthusiasm for the war by generating American casualties, thus demonstrating to the American public the unappealing potential for, and disastrous results of a protracted ground conflict. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: The US Army is currently developing a new variant of the Bradley Fighting Vehicle the M2A3 also known as the BFVS-A3. The new vehicle will include a number of modifications to the current M2A2 vehicle as a result of combat experience during Operation Desert Storm. The modifications have resulted from a need to upgrade the Bradley Fighting Vehicle System (BFVS) to facilitate enhanced command and control lethality,, survivability, mobility, and sustainability, to defeat current and future threat forces. The purpose of this thesis is to compare the two variants of vehicle in the Pre-test Modeling phase of the Model-Test--Model concept. This thesis used the Janus high resolution combat model, to simulate the vehicles and weapon systems under two scenarios, a Head-to-Head scenario, and a Force-on-Force scenario. The Head-to-Head scenario is a simulation of the future Limited User Test 2 to be conducted by TEXCOM. The Force-on-Force scenario is a simulated battle between a Bradley platoon and a Soviet style tank heavy company. Data was gathered from the Janus created postprocessor files of the two scenarios. The analysis compared four measures of effectiveness (MOEs), in the areas of detection, engagement, lethality, and survivability. The aim of the analysis was to detect differences between the vehicle variants using the two sample T-test and the Mann-Whitney- Wilcoxen test.

Desert Storm reiterated the need for Near- Real Time (NRT) imagery of the battlefield. History shows that Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) have the capability to meet some of these challenges. The Defense Airborne Reconnaissance Office (DARO) is directing a program to develop a family of UAVs that will meet the future NRT imagery needs of operational commanders. The High Altitude Endurance (HAE) UAV is part of this family of UAVs that will serve to provide sustained, broad area coverage for those commanders with time critical needs. The thrust of this thesis is to define a process by which the time-critical Reconnaissance Surveillance and Target Acquisition (RSTA) imagery needs of the tactical commander on the battlefield can be met through effective dynamic retasking of the HAE UAV. This thesis examines HAE UAV capabilities, the intelligence cycle, and collection management procedures. Prohibitors of timely intelligence are highlighted. A process is described through which the HAE UAV may be dynamically retasked to meet the ground force commander's real-time collection requirements. The appropriateness of the HAE UAV to be used to satisfy the ground force commander's dynamic requirements is discussed.

In a martial law scenario, military or peacekeeping forces may be put in place to restore law and order and conduct a wide range of operations, such as setting up road blocks, imposing curfew, distributing food and manning checkpoints. This thesis focuses on the checkpoint operation and uses the agent-based modeling software PAX to assess the impacts of such a scenario on the population. Description:
Accurately measuring dissolved oxygen concentrations in fresh and salt water environments has long been an interdisciplinary priority. Many methodologies exist, including two very promising new ones, optical fluorescence quenching optrodes (or optodes) and solid-state voltammetric electrodes. In this study we compare the responsiveness of these two techniques to dynamic changes in dissolved oxygen concentrations, using traditional methods of polarographic oxygen sensors and Winkler's chemical titrations to corroborate the measurements. Advantages of the optrode system include simplicity of operation and high sensitivity when changes in oxygen concentrations are small (
<@D10@mMO"2min^-^1). Advantages of voltammetry include equally high sensitivity, independent of rate of change of oxygen concentration, and the capability of simultaneously measuring other chemical species. Both systems have the capability of producing high-resolution, continuous oxygen profiles by collecting and reporting real-time data. Kinetic estimates of the binding and dissociation constants for the ruthenium-oxygen complex in the optrode revealed a relatively long half-life of the Ru^2^+-O"2 complex for dissociation (t"1"/"2 of 43.2s to equilibrate from a 100 to 0% O"2 saturation change). In contrast, the Ru^2^+-O"2 association constant was 5.0 times faster (t"1"/"2 of 8.6s to equilibrate from a 0 to 100% O"2 saturation change). Therefore, because of these differential kinetics, researchers should take care when using a ruthenium-based optrode to measure real-time dissolved oxygen concentrations undergoing temporal variability.

Good for a read now and then.......2007-09-30
If you're interested in evolution or biology you'll probably like this book. Some of the essays dabbled too much in the small nuances that separate different species but mostly Gould has a strong theme for each essay and he writes it very well! With the book being a series of essays it's a good coffee table book; you can pick it up and read a single essay and then put it back down. Also, you might need coffee because some of the essays get a little tedious.
Enlightening and fun.......2004-12-11
THE FLAMINGO'S SMILE was a required purchase for an expository writing class I took, and instead of stopping with the handful of essays assigned to us, I went ahead and read the whole book. Gould is a graceful writer and each of his essays has a "point" to make that is grounded in scientific reasoning.
His style is to discuss some biological "problem" in detail, using it to illustrate a more general point or idea about natural history. Some of Gould's essays make a greater impression than others, to be sure, but all are entertaining and none are a waste of the reader's time.
In response to the charge that FLAMINGO'S SMILE contains more "political correctness" than science, I must raise an objection. (See the one-star review below.) Gould's essay on the career and achievements of an American cell biologist, E.E. Just, does not claim that Just would be "famous" if not for his skin color. It explicitly states that racial attitudes kept Just's peers and colleagues from taking his work seriously or according him the respect he deserved. Just is described as a black American who "exiled himself to Europe" because of racist attitudes in his native land. This was a real historical phenomenon, not something Gould cooked up to pontificate about racial equality. Gould also notes that "we must not depict [Just] as a cardboard hero" and mentions his bizarre (but explicable) fling with Italian fascism in the 1930s.
The claim that Gould is intellectually dishonest is not supported by these facts. This particular claim exemplifies one of Gould's favorite themes, which is the persistence of the mistaken belief that science is a body of truths and not a method of discovery. Even real scientists fall into this trap on occasion. Here, the objection suggests that Gould's work cannot be "science" because it is "politically correct." The logical flaw in this statement should be obvious. For further background, you could dip into Gould's book THE MISMEASURE OF MAN, which is an historical survey of pseudo-scientific efforts to prove what racists already believe, i.e. "know" to be true.
Evolutionary Biology?.......2004-06-24
Is there any other type of modern biology? Evolution is so deeply interwined in today's biology that it almost seems a tautology to classify this book under Evolutionary Biology. Gould's reflections are masterpieces of rationality and logic heavily supported with facts and exposed with an uneven grace and uniqueness. This, as a lot of other Gould's books, is a collection of essays that don't need to be read in order since they are not chapters, their organization obeys the main subject of each essay, not a unique plot developed along the book. This is an easy and incredibly interesting journey inside reason and natural science, please don't hesitate if you want to be taken by the hand of one of the greatest zoologists of the twentieth century.

The Flamingo's Smile: Reflections in Natural History by Stephen Jay Gould is a collection of thirty essays with a varied scope, but the contents is encompassing. Bringing history with each essay is the hallmark of Gould and he will not disappoint you here.
This is Gould's fourth in a series of books that are collections of his essays that were found on the pages of "Natural History." These essays bring us life that is a product of a contingent past, not just a timeless law of nature. Gould brings meaning to his essays through an extensive history and a calculated musing to seemingly contradictory themes.
Dinosaurs and the astroid, Hottentot Venus and even baseball are in this book. Gould brings us lucid, cogent commentary and a writting style that will educate you gracefully. Gould has an ability to bring the scientific knowledge to the layperson with erudition and understanding.
Read and enjoy this book... complete with just a little quirkiness and a sense of humor.

When I first cracked this book as a graduate student, I had little idea of what I was in for: sure, I expected a little on Darwin's theories and some history, but nothing else. What I found was an astonishingly rich panorama of issues connected to Darwin, the nature of science, and of course its misuses. From the trials of the Hottentott Venus to the mistakes of Audobon, Gould has fascinating and humorous perspecitives to bring. It was the ideal diversion - procrastination can be sooo delicious - from the dessicated economics and statistics that I had had to read and the start of a great love affair with this author, one of the finest writers alive.
Gould writes with the most astonishing lucidity and the most elegant style that I have ever read in a science writer. Indeed, those who disagree with him or look down on him - and there are many at Harvard - sarcastically cite his writing talent as the "reason" for his enduring success! Well, I would hope so. If they could write as well as Gould, then perhaps they could advance their opposing views, like, more effectively.

We gave this to my daughter for Christmas and she loves it. She's an artistic sort of girl...likes origami, etc so it was right up her alley. We cannot believe all of the cool things she makes with a dollar bill and she can do it anywhere. It's a great conversation starter and has made her popular with her friends! Absolutely would recommend this book!
Great Book for Beginners.......2006-03-11
This was my first money folding book and I really liked it. I actually had bought it for a friend's daughter for her birthday. She and I sat down one day and folded many of the diagrams. I have since bought this book for several other people and always recommend it to beginners.

o Designs are well diagrammed - easy to follow and instructions are very clear (this is unusual for many origami books that leave you guessing). I've seen diagrams for some of these models elsewhere - but this book is worth buying just for the quality of the diagrams. Saves on much frustration! You don't need to know anything about origami to be able to follow this book.
o I REALLY liked most of the designs - many books have a few cool designs and others that are unrecognizable or just kind of eh - The designs in this book are remarkable good.
o Nice spiral bound book - this is a great feature when trying to read and fold.
o Includes interesting factoids about money! Educational as well as fun!
CONS:
o Not alot of diagrams.
GENERAL IMPRESSION:
This book is great for beginners. Diagrams are clear and not full of origami jargon. Models are interesting and fun. I have been folding money for years now --- and it all started with this book. Anyone who asks me for a recommendation - this book is the first on my list.

i love it. when i first got it at the age of 9 (right before my birth day)i was so happy. i turned 10 yesterday and i couldn't wait until i got birthday money,i was folding like crazy. i totaly recomend it for all ages(i like the rings best)

this book is really fun to read and make the projects. the instructions are easy and i especially like how the author included visual hints to make sure you're doing it right along the way( "You should be able to see half of the N in ONE when you're done" ). The visual checkpoints are helpful too--when the author says "Like this:" and has a picture of the project so far. Interesting dollar-related facts are sprinkled throughout the book and it is written in an easy conversational style that is very funny.
The only downside is that there are only 7 designs.

My 10 year old son loves this book. The diagrams are excellent. They are straightforward and simple to follow. You will definately be pleased with this book. It's well worth the money!

This set includes the first four titles in the realistic and meaningful Alice McKinley series.
Phyllis Reynolds Naylor has combined the frankness of Judy Blume's writing with the fun of L.M. Montgomery's stories, creating a likable protagonist that would be pals with Anne Shirley, were they contemporaries. Alice McKinley is, at times, awkward, uncertain, and shy; in other instances, she is bold, brave, and determined. She lives a good, clean life and makes good decisions most of the time, but is not afraid to ask questions and make her own decisions.
Alice lost her mother at a young age and barely remembers her. She adores her father, who works at a music store, and her older brother Lester. She has two best friends, one mama's girl and one slightly wild child.
Readers can grow with Alice. As the series progresses, Alice gets older, and the reading level (due to content) goes up too. The series tackles everything - name-calling, dating, religion, school, death of a parent, remarriage and stepparents, peer pressure, and more - without ever being preachy or saccharine. Alice discusses life issues and questions taboos with her father, brother and friends without shame, without fear - just openness and honesty. I was going to buy this but when I saw it was a box set i was disapointed. I've read all of the Alice books there are. This would be a good present for a friend you think would like the series. Naylor hasn't had any new books come out yet and I'm still waiting for it to come out.

I was very excited when I got an email from Amazon saying that a new addition to the Alice series was out. I jumped up and down and begged my big cousin to drive me to the store pronto to get it. It wasn't there so we ordered it off of amazon and I was SUPER dissapointed when I found out that this was a box set of books I had already. I am giving this box set 3 stars because I don't know what to put. If you have never read the first 4 books then by all means get this box set, but if you have already read them don't bother.
Box Set of First Alice Books.......2003-10-15
I bought this thinking it was a new book in the Alice series. Sadly, it wasn't but it's a great deal for beginning "Alice" readers. It is a box set of the first four books in the series. Titles included are: "The Agony of Alice", "Alice in Rapture, Sort Of", "Reluctantly Alice", and "All But Alice". For only about $...this is a great price if you don't already have these books. Just don't make the same mistake I did and get your hopes up for a brand new book when it's just the oldies.

I love the alice series. I have read every book. I thought that this was a new book and I just wanted to tell everyone that it really is a book set. I looked through the internet and I finally found that it was the first three or four books (not including the new 3rd,4th, and 5th grade)
