This well-known 2-volume textbook provides senior undergraduate and postgraduate engineers, scientists and applied mathematicians with the specific techniques, and the framework to develop skills in using the techniques in the various branches of computational fluid dynamics.
Volume 1 systematically develops fundamental computational techniques, partial differential equations including convergence, stability and consistency and equation solution methods. A unified treatment of finite difference, finite element, finite volume and spectral methods, as alternative means of discretion, is emphasized. For the second edition the author also compiled a separately available manual of solutions to the many exercises to be found in the main text.

This volume is an extremely clear summary of basic theory and comparative techniques for computational resolution of fluid mechanics problems. Code examples are clear and extremely helpful to practitioners trying to produce useful models.
Very good book for CFD.......2000-07-19
This is more advanced book for CFD (comparing with the volume I). More specifice topics were talked about in this book. It is a very good book for beginner, also a good reference.
Excellent books for entering the C.F.D feild.......1998-12-27
The reader should be familer with the general techniques of Computaional Science. This book does an excellent review of thoes basic techniques which are basic for computational fluid dynamics. I just finished reading it and am Now starting on the second volume. I am doing a computer Simulation of Ship wakes and this book is I think nesessary reading before a researcher dives in to the mass of research papers published in this field.

Since the publication of "Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics", spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of the earlier book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since 1988. The initial treatment Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The first half of the book provides the algorithmic details of orthogonal expansions, transform methods, spectral discretization of differential equations plus their boundary conditions, and solution of the discretized equations by direct and iterative methods. The second half furnishes a comprehensive discussion of the mathematical theory of spectral methods on single domains, including approximation theory, stability and convergence, and illustrative applications of the theory to model boundary-value problems. Both the algorithmic and theoretical discussions cover spectral methods on tensor-product domains, triangles and tetrahedra. All chapters are enhanced with material on the Galerkin with numerical integration version of spectral methods. The discussion of direct and iterative solution methods is greatly expanded as are the set of numerical examples that illustrate the key properties of the various types of spectral approximations and the solution algorithms.
A companion book "Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics" contains an extensive survey of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries and provides detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries.

Written in a easy-to-understand manner. Plus plenty of codes on website so I have no problem programming. One con is there are a lot of typo's in the book, but it's easy to figure out. Overall very satisfied.

An exciting dance through time........2001-01-16
I never had the opportunity to see the "Walk Through Time" exhibition, initiated by Sidney Liebes and supported by Hewlett-Packard, but it must have been a marvelous experience. What rivets my attention in this book, however, even more than the beautiful pictures of the exhibit, is the text written by Elisabet Sahtouris, who expresses her own "cosmovision" with an incomparable eloquence and vitality. While her words are grounded solidly in the most advanced theoretical and empirical evolutionary science, she takes the reader not on a walk but an exciting dance through time. If I were asked to recommend just one book that best told the story of how the universe conspired to bring us into being this would be it. It's a real "roots" story but the roots are not merely those of a particular individual or family or species but of all life, reaching back to the point where time itself loses meaning.

this is the most interesting book i've read in years; prof. liebes presents the history of evolution from stardust to us, at the end of the book one relizes that all of us humans are actually single cells of a larger life form, the planet earth. In an informative and easy to read way, "a walk through time" presents a holistic theory of evolution that emphasises symbiotic co-evolution of geo-bio-matter admidst the theme that while life starts out in a state of competition, all life forms even on a cellular level learn to cooperate, develop symbiotic relationships that enable life to first develop and then evolve billions of years to present day. the glory of the sheer will of all life,(particularly at the cellular level) reminds me very much of shoupenhauer,nieztche,spinoza, henri bergson and hegal. i would recomend this book to all people,especially those who enjoy philosophy and those theologians seeking a more meaning cosmology.

A global view which necessary means a lack of details.......2000-01-26
I've just terminated to read this book and it was very interesting in many respects: - The text is well written and a pleasure to read; - Sometimes you have a fact per line, which shows the incredible work done by the author to synthesize a huge amount of knowledge on the subject; - Essential things are said and you'll have doors open for further readings; - The fact that timescale is respected as the text goes on gives a striking perspective of life's evolution over the millions and millions of years; - The first stage of evolution (unicelled creatures) is longly explained; - The incredible role of living creatures (especially bacteria) in shaping our planet is highlighted; - Emphasis is put on the unity of life in it's diversity.
But there are some shortages : - Pictures are of poor print quality; - There is a lack of details, especially after the microbial stage.
Globally speaking, if you want the life's story before animals and plants, it's a good book, but otherwise, the Book of Life by S. J. Gould is better. However, in my opinion, it's a good buy and one can learn many many things by reading this book.

A Walk Through Time - From Stardust to Us - The evolution of Life on Earth.
A Walk Through Time (AWTT) is an incredibly well done book, from all aspects. The artwork and printing make it suitable for display and the content challenges us to re-think our position in the world and the decisions we are making.
The explanation of evolution is both plausible and understandable to the lay person. Yet the mystery of life is not diminished or hidden, so there is more than enough room for those who understand our existence through their love of God.
Beginning more than 5,000 MYA (5,000 Million Years Ago, or 5 Billion Years Ago) we are told, the "universe did indeed begin in an explosion of energy powerful enough to send all matter flying apart for billions of years into the future." From that starting point, AWTT traces with considerable detail the evolution of our living earth of which we are a part. And everywhere the mystery of "the life force" is to be found.
One can read the prose or follow the exhibition text along the bottom of the pages, or take in both to re-enforce what is being explained. Sidney Liebes managed to convince HP of the merits of creating a 1mile "walk through time." That project is staffed by volunteers and has been presented in a dozen venues in three countries. The "exhibition text" mentioned above is from that project.
The final paragraph of the book summarizes the challenge for our existence in this totally interconnected web of life. "Is it possible that a sense of awe, wonder and humility, of origins, place, possibilities, and recovery of a belief in the sacredness of nature, can, and perhaps must, become operational imperatives in guiding humanity into the future? Rather than pondering the illusive purpose of life, can we not accept and appreciate the gift, live the life we are given, respect all life, and preserve options for the future. Though none of us has the power to control the future, each of us is free to determine how we will contribute to the circumstance out of which the future will evolve."
Perhaps the purpose of life is simply to ensure that life continues. Then there is much in this book to set us on the right path.

Adventures Down Under Series.......2000-05-29
Right at the beginning, these books capture your attention and keep it: from the father's mistaken arrest and deportation to Australia, to his family following on another ship, to countless adventures as the McWaid family searches for their escaped father and unknown grandfather. Patrick,the main character, is a courageous boy who learns to trust God through all the uncertainty of his new life. I picked this series up for the church library, and then decided to read the first one so I would know how they were. I found myself running out to get the other books in the series, just to find out what happened next, and now I have books 1 through 8! This series entertains, as well as teaches its readers to trust God through both the good and bad times.

This is REALLY hilarious!.......2003-08-10
The Dingo features a number of humorous pieces from various writers, each of which has his or her own distinctive voice, but all of which are quite clever. There are a lot of pop cultural and political satires here that are hilariously cutting. It's got a lot of Onion-type faux news, but also some Python- and Dave Barry-esque fiction stories and columns and a handful of laugh-out-loud funny Top 10 lists. This is really an underrated gem of a book. Very, very funny.

This is a terrific humor anthology with a lot of hilarious stories. A lot of the writing is of the Onion/Monty Python/SNL type, with some David Sedaris and Dave Barry-type pieces as well. Very, very funny and highly recommended!
