    Book Description

"Pleasure of imagination. . . . I a geologist have illdefined notion of land covered with ocean, former animals, slow force cracking surface &c truly poetical."—from Charles Darwin's Notebook M, 1838

The early nineteenth century was a golden age for the study of geology. New discoveries in the field were greeted with the same enthusiasm reserved today for advances in the biomedical sciences. In her long-awaited account of Charles Darwin's intellectual development, Sandra Herbert focuses on his geological training, research, and thought, asking both how geology influenced Darwin and how Darwin influenced the science. Elegantly written, extensively illustrated, and informed by the author's prodigious research in Darwin's papers and in the nineteenth-century history of earth sciences, Charles Darwin, Geologist provides a fresh perspective on the life and accomplishments of this exemplary thinker.

As Herbert reveals, Darwin's great ambition as a young scientist—one he only partially realized—was to create a "simple" geology based on movements of the earth's crust. (Only one part of his scheme has survived in close to the form in which he imagined it: a theory explaining the structure and distribution of coral reefs.) Darwin collected geological specimens and took extensive notes on geology during all of his travels. His grand adventure as a geologist took place during the circumnavigation of the earth by H.M.S. Beagle (1831-1836)—the same voyage that informed his magnum opus, On the Origin of Species.

Upon his return to England it was his geological findings that first excited scientific and public opinion. Geologists, including Darwin's former teachers, proved a receptive audience, the British government sponsored publication of his research, and the general public welcomed his discoveries about the earth's crust. Because of ill health, Darwin's years as a geological traveler ended much too soon: his last major geological fieldwork took place in Wales when he was only thirty-three. However, the experience had been transformative: the methods and hypotheses of Victorian-era geology, Herbert suggests, profoundly shaped Darwin's mind and his scientific methods as he worked toward a full-blown understanding of evolution and natural selection.

    3 out of 5 stars Slightly disappointing.......2006-12-19

I'm not sure exactly what this book is. If your looking for a biography of Darwin you'll be disappointed. The editorial review says that it's an "account of Charles Darwin's intellectual development", and maybe that's why the book is a bit of a snoozer. But that is probably a good description. As a geologist myself, the title caught my eye. The book was written by a Sandra Herbert, a historian who appears to have a very impressive knowledge of science and the history of geology. The book has a wealth of very interesting information, and is very well researched, but it appears to lack direction and theme. Perhaps I was looking for a book written by a geologist, or someone with a contagious passion for geology. That passion doesn't seem to come across in this book.

She does implicitly pose a question near the end of the book, that I think perhaps should have been developed more thoroughly, and that is, what is Darwin's place in history as a geologist. In other words if he had never written "The Origin" how would he be remembered by modern scientists and historians? Would he be remembered along with prominent 19th century English geologists like Sedgwick, Murchison, and Lyell. Were his geological contributions that significant? But it could also be asked, was "The Origin" really a geological work? It could be argued that Darwin was never anything but a geologist, that "The Origin" addressed geologic problems such as the "species problem", extinctions in the fossil record, faunal succession, and was so successful that it's impacts were revolutionary in biology and all of natural science. Although the author does stress the significance of Darwin's geological contributions, I don't think she develops these points.

      Book Description

Text extracted from opening pages of book: CHARLES DARWIN AS GEOLOGIST THE REDE LECTURE GIVEN AT THE DARWIN CENTENNIAL COMMEMORATION ON 24 JUNE 1909 BY SIR ARCHIBALD GEIKIE, K. C. B. D. Sc, D. C. lT( OxoN.) PRESIDENT OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY Cambridge : at the University Press 1909 r BY JOECKT or* A. Y, CHARLES DARWIN AS GEOLOGIST When the Vice-Chancellor honoured me with his invitation to give the Rede Lecture this year, he informed me that it would be included in the proceedings of the present Celebration. Although he left me free in the choice of a subject, it was obvious that the lecturer could hardly hesitate to select a theme which would have reference, more or less direct, to the illustrious Naturalist whose Centenary the University had resolved to commemorate. The nature and extent of Charles Darwin's contributions to biological science have been so often and so fully described, and his influence on almost all departments of human thought has been so amply recognised, that for the present, little more may seem to remain to be said on the subject until, in the course of time, a fresh 0. 1 CHARLES DARWIN review of his relations to the history of intellectual development may be called for. Nevertheless, I venture to think that there is one branch of his scientific labours, the value and significance of which have scarcely perhaps received the notice and appreciation to which they are entitled. It is apt to be forgotten that Darwin began his active scien tific career as a geologist, that it was mainly to geological problems that the earlier years of his life were devoted, and that it was in no small measure from the side of geology that he was led into those evolutional studies which have given him so just a title to our admiration and gratitude, and have placed him so high among the immortals. I have therefore decided to ask your attention to-day to an outline of what he accomplished in geology, and of the relation of his studies in that science to the great problems of evolu tion with which his name is indissolubly associated. In Darwin's younger days geology had hardly as yet completely vindicated for itself AS GEOLOGIST an acknowledged and assured place in the circle of the natural sciences. Those who then cultivated it could not agree among themselves upon its fundamental principles. They were divided into three distinct and antagonistic schools, between whom a long and sometimes acrimonious controversy was waged. On the one side, the Neptunists, or Champions of Water, maintained, as the prime article of their creed, that our planet was once enveloped in an universal ocean, from which the various rocks now to be seen in its crust were deposited as chemical and mechanical precipitates. They ridiculed the notion that the globe had a heated interior, and they regarded volcanoes as a late appear ance in the earth's history, due to the spon taneous combustion of subterraneous beds of coal 1 ^. On the other side the Vulcanists, or Plutonists, with Fire as their watchword, vehemently insisted on the important part which they believed had been taken by the globe's internal heat, whether in the form of * The figures in the text refer to the Notes at the end. 12 CHARLES DARWIN volcanoes or by the subterranean intrusion of molten material into the solid crust 2 . But this school was split into two parties who opposed each other with hardly less vigour than they both showed towards the Neptunists. The one section proclaimed that the pheno mena revealed by geology bear witness to a far greater intensity of action in former ages than now, and especially to the occurrence from time to time of gigantic cataclysms whereby the face of the planet was changed, whole tribes of plants and animals were destroyed, and place was made for the crea tion of new faunas and floras. Those who belonged to this division were known as the Catastrophic or Convulsionist school 3 . The other section received the name of Uniformi tarian, inasmuch as they held

                Book Description

The contributions in this book give a high-level coverage of many of the subjects and techniques needed to understand the physics of low-dimensional condensed matter systems. The topics presented include the use of conformal field theories, the Luttinger liquid approach to one-dimensional electron systems, and the use of random matrices in problems connected with quantum chaos. The contributions are authored by some of the most prominent physicists active in the field, among them the 1998 Nobel Prize laureate R. B. Laughlin. The book should become an extremely useful instrument for all those interested in theoretical condensed matter physics.

                  Book Description

The 2007 Spring Meeting of the Arbeitskreis Festkörperphysik was held in Regensburg, Germany, between March 26 and March 30 2007 in conjunction with the 71st Annual Meeting of the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft. This year's meeting was certainly one of the largest physics meetings in Europe.

The present volume 47 of the Advances in Solid State Physics contains the written version of a large number of the invited talks and gives an overview of the present status of solid state physics where low-dimensional systems such as quantum dots and quantum wires are dominating. The importance of magnetic materials and the present day interest into magnetism is reflected by the large number of contributions to the part dealing with ferromagnetic films and particles. One of the most exciting achievements of the last couple of years is the successful application of electrical contacts and the investigation of a single layer of graphene. This exciting physics is covered in Part IV of this book. Terahertz physics is another rapidly moving field which is presented here by five contributions. Achievements in solid state physics are only rarely possible without a thorough knowledge of material physics. Therefore, the last two parts of this book cover material aspects.

                    Book Description

The book contains the worked out lecture notes of the courses delivered at the summer school in Les Houches. They address graduate students and are of interest for researchers as well. The book can be used as an introduction into three closely related fields: anyons and fractional statistics, fractional quantum Hall effect and knot theory. The theoretical papers are occasionally completed by reports on experimental techniques, and besides of physics some application to biological systems can be found.

                        Book Description

This set of lecture notes provides a detailed and up-to-date description of a field undergoing explosive growth, that of confined photon systems in the shape of microcavities or photonic crystals. Bringing together world leaders in the field, it provides all the basic tools needed to master a subject which will have both major impact in fundamental studies and widescale applications. Confined photon systems enable the study of low-dimensional photonic systems, modified light-matter interaction, e.g. between excitons and photons in all-solid-state semiconductor microcavities, and of many phenomena of quantum optics, including single photon generation, squeezed light, quantum state entanglement, non-local quantum measurements, and, potentially, quantum computation. They are also on the verge of yielding new, high performance optical devices for large-scale industries such as telecommunications and display technology.

                          Book Description

A major current challenge for semiconductor devices is to develop materials for the next generation of optical communication systems and solar power conversion applications. Recently, extensive research has revealed that an introduction of only a few percentages of nitrogen into III-V semiconductor lattice leads to a dramatic reduction of the band gap. This discovery has opened the possibility of using these material systems for applications ranging from lasers to solar cells. "Physics and Technology of Dilute III-V Nitride Semiconductors and Novel Dilute Nitride Material Systems" reviews the current status of research and development in dilute III-V nitrides, with 24 chapters from prominent research groups covering recent progress in growth techniques, experimental characterization of band structure, defects carrier transport, transport properties, dynamic behavior of N atoms, device applications, modeling of device design, novel optoelectronic integrated circuits, and novel nitrogen containing III-V materials.

                            Book Description

Observation of edge magnetoplasmons (EMP) was one of the most unexpected discoveries in physics of two-dimensional electron systems (2DES). In contrast to "bulk" 2DES plasmons with frequencies equal to or larger than the cyclotron frequency, the edge magnetoplasmons confine near the edge of 2DES and have a gapless spectrum. The possibility of observing EMP in different kinds of 2DES realised in the semiconductor structure, on the liquid helium surface or in 2D sheet of ions trapped below the helium surface offers a powerful spectroscopic tool for the study of the general properties of 2DES.

The main purpose of this book is to outline theoretical concepts and some recently obtained results of experimental investigations of EMP in 2DES. The theories presented in this book cover a broad range of intensively studying EMP properties, while the experimental part of the book is mainly focused on just a few intriguing results. In addition, attention is paid to the possible EMP applications.

                                Book Description

This book presents an analytical theory on the electronic states in low-dimensional systems and finite crystals recently developed by the author based on a differential equation theory approach. This theory gives some exact and general fundamental understandings on the electronic states in ideal low-dimensional systems and finite crystals such as the numbers and the behaviors of electronic states of different types; It provides new insights on some fundamental problems in low-dimensional systems such as surface states, quantum confinement effects etc, some of them are quite different from what are traditionally believed in the solid state physics community.

What? You not been to Slaka ? Not yet, you say ? Don't know how to ? Why go ? Where it is ? All your questions and answers are available in "Welcome to Slaka", a guidebook to the land of Slaka, a guidebook translated from native Slakan by the late Malcolm Bradbury, Professor of English and expert on Eastern Europe.

Bradbury keeps the spirit of Slaka and the original Slakan in his amazing translation. Chapters with headings such as "Slaka : how was?", "Slaka: how to?" and "Slaka: how is?" cover her history, travel routes and current affairs. Creative photographs and statistics help the reader imagine the country, as do the collection of very useful phrases translated to Slakan; these include "Help! Help!", "Police!", "You mean this is the police?", "Let me go." and "Take me to the Consulate".

With intimate details of restaurants and the night life, the recommended spots for tourists, and Slakan customs, "Welcome to Slaka" is my favourite guidebook beating the Lonely Planet for its sheer inventiveness. As Slaka is ignored by most map-makers and guide-books ( even the Lonely Planet does cover Slaka - Not yet, Not yet!), as if it does not exist, "Welcome to Slaka" is a remarkable book, helping us understand the life and times in Slaka. On my bookshelf, it stands next to that other classic "Photographs of Greeneland".

For those who love to travel, while sitting at home, for those who love laughter cloaked in seriousness (and vice versa), for those who have missed out on this unique world, "Welcome to Slaka" is a must-read, a remarkable document that stands unparalleled in English literature.
