    Book Description

In the early twentieth century the relevance of chirality to the pharmaceutical industry was established by the fact that one enantiomer of hyoscyamine possessed greater pharmacological activity than the other. Today, most new drugs and those under development consist of a single optically active isomer, and chirality is also becoming an issue for the agrochemical and other industries. Regulatory agencies throughout the world are currently reviewing the importance of chirality with regard to pharmaceutical and agrochemical products. New guidelines from such agencies have been key drivers for the focus on single enantiomer products in these industries.

These scientific and regulatory developments have created the need for a guide for workers in the pharmaceutical and chemical industries seeking information on chiral molecules, processes, and commercially available chiral chemicals. Chiral Intermediates presents the chemical professional with a comprehensive listing of over 4700 available chiral chemicals including specific data of interest for each entry in the listing. Its companion volume, Chiral Drugs presents the same detailed information for over 2000 chiral drugs.

The 'Chiral Pool' of readily available, relatively inexpensive chiral compounds has been expanding at a rapid rate as more and more products are produced in large quantities at economical prices. New developments in various technologies for isolating, preparing, and purifying chiral materials have greatly increased the opportunities for utilizing optically pure compounds in commercial applications. Novel techniques for classical resolution, new methodologies for developing selective enzymes for biocatalysis, advances in the application of microorganisms for chemical production, and continued progress in the area of asymmetric synthesis have all contributed to the growth of this field.

Part I contains four chapters which provide an introduction to topics relevant to the field of chiral chemistry and includes a brief overview of chirality, a short discussion on the current market drivers in the area of chiral chemistry, and a basic presentation of the various sources and methods for obtaining chiral compounds.

Part II presents entries for 4700 commercially available chiral compounds. For each main entry, the chemical name and a list of trade names and synonyms is provided; the CAS Registry Number, the European Inventory of Existing Commercial Chemical Substances (EINECS) number, and the Merck Index (12th edition) number are given when available. The physical properties, including specific rotation, of each compound are described and indicated applications are presented. The structure of nearly every compound is provided, and the manufacturers and suppliers of the compounds are also given. Indexes, including a master index of names and synonyms and an index of custom manufacturing services for production of chiral compounds, are appended.

Chiral Intermediates provides an introduction to the types of sources and methods currently in use for obtaining chiral molecules and is an invaluable resource for information on available chiral molecules. Chiral Intermediates and Chiral Drugs are the most comprehensive and detailed guides to chiral compounds available.

      Book Description

Intermediate Organic Chemistry Second Edition Like its celebrated predecessor, Intermediate Organic Chemistry, Second Edition furnishes students with the information and conceptual skills they will need to make the transition from introductory to graduate-level organic chemistry and to fully comprehend published research. Revised and updated, this new edition features additional and improved examples, explanations which are more detailed and elaborated, and twice as many exercise problems—most based on actual studies in current articles—at the end of each chapter. Problems are presented in raw-data form to encourage multistep thinking and require students to solve problems from the beginning rather than from half-finished setups. The chapter on stereochemistry has been updated to include new terminology; and the chapter on nuclear magnetic resonance has been reframed in terms of pulsed high-field spectrometers. Other subjects covered include: reading nomenclature; searching the literature; functional group transformations; carbon-carbon bond formation; planning multistep syntheses; mechanisms and predictions; electron delocalization, aromatic character, and pericyclic reactions; and physical influences on reactions. An ideal text for one-semester, upper-level undergraduate or first-year graduate courses, Intermediate Organic Chemistry, Second Edition eliminates the problem of selecting or omitting subjects from advanced texts. The book will also be useful to practicing chemists who wish to update their understanding of particular topics.

        Customer Reviews:

        4 out of 5 stars Another Endorsement.......2006-09-06

I agree completely with the second reviewer in endorsing this book. I have a BS degree & MS degree in Organic Chemistry, so have taken my share of undgrad & grad Organic courses. When I was taking Advanced Organic as an undergrad, our professor mentioned that there wasn't really an adequate textbook for an advanced Organic course at the time. I saw this book as a grad student & read it and thought it would have been perfect for the advanced undergrad course or as a refresher before starting grad courses. It really does do a great job of bridging undergraduate material(which to me is analogous to learning the alphabet and spelling) with graduate material(which is analogous to grammar and writing). I wish I would have found it BEFORE I took grad level Physical Organic & Organic Synthesis courses - it would have made reading Carey & Sundberg a little easier.

I would guess that the first reviewer's extensive collections of Organic texts has blinded him to what it was like when he was originally learning the material - he has forgotten how taking the leap from memorizing reactions to actually understanding the concepts behind them can be daunting, and that although these concepts are mentioned in undergrad textbooks, they really aren't explained to any length. So yeah, the concepts are THERE, but you'd have to understand them already to find the treatment given to them by undergrad textbooks adequate.

        4 out of 5 stars Disagree completely.......2006-07-03

I will have to disagree totally with the previous reviewer. This book, is in no way an outline or review of organic chemistry. It is instead, as the title states, an intermediate text that is intended to bridge the 2 semester undergraduate organic and graduate organic chemistry. It begins to introduce physical organic fundamentals as well as presenting more advanced concepts. It is not a review. Nor is it a collection of reaction mechanisms. It is an excellent intermediate text.

2 out of 5 stars Good review but far too expensive........2005-10-16

In light of the heavy price tag, I would think this book is not really worth the money. This is not myself being frugal; I have spent hundreds on supplementary textbooks pertaining to Organic Chemistry and allied fields. Although I chose not to purchase this book, I still have reviewed it thoroughly.

The book is just an ordinary overview of Organic Chemistry. It offers nothing special and is outranked by a variety of other more economically sound texts. Reviews of Organic chemistry are a dime a dozen and if you still have a good Introductory O-Chem textbook then it should suffice for this as most textbooks come with chapter summaries.

Also, Writing Reaction Mechanisms by Solomon or Schaum's as well as Wiley's Cliff note outlines of O-Chem should suffice for a textbook such as this. This is neither useful at a professional graduate scale nor is it helpful in making an ascent into graduate or honours work after finishing a degree.

All in all this book, although having a satisfactory presentation still is outweighed by the heavy purchasing price.

          Book Description

Neutral reactive intermediates - radicals, carbenes, nitrenes, and arynes - have an interesting place within the history of organic chemistry. Once regarded as curiosities, then intensively studied from the mechanistic point of view by physical organic chemists, they now play a key role in synthetic chemistry. This concise text concentrates on the last aspect of reactive intermediate chemistry; the important reactions of these electron-deficient species are laid out clearly and simply, with carefully chosen examples illustrating their use in organic synthesis. Each chapter includes a few problems as well as suggestions for further reading and provides undergraduates with an invaluable summary of this important topic in organic chemistry.

French zoologist and geologist Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) is remembered largely for opposing pre-Darwinian theories of evolution and instead advancing his theory of catastrophism. When evolution took the fore, many of Cuvier's ideas were swept aside. Martin J. S. Rudwick makes a good case, in this edition of several of Cuvier's key papers, for restoring the scientist to currency; his ideas anticipated modern research in mass extinctions and what Stephen Jay Gould calls "punctuated equilibrium." This collection is especially interesting in tracing the formation of Cuvier's ideas on the fossil record--another idea we owe to him.

                    Book Description

French zoologist Georges Cuvier (1769-1832) helped form and bring credibility to geology and paleontology. Here Martin J. S. Rudwick provides the first modern translation of Cuvier's essential writings on fossils and catastrophes and links these translated texts together with his own insightful narrative and interpretive commentary.

"Martin Rudwick has done English-speaking science a considerable service by translating and commenting on Cuvier's work. . . . He guides us through Cuvier's most important writings, especially those which demonstrate his new technique of comparative anatomy."—Douglas Palmer, New Scientist

5 out of 5 stars An extremely important resource.......2007-01-20

In April 1796 Georges Cuvier read a paper he had written, entitled Memoir on the Species of Elephants, Both Living and Fossil, to the National Institute in France. Besides establishing that African and Indian elephants were different species, it established that mammoths were a separate species from any living elephant and therefore must be extinct. Thus for the first time establishing the fact of extinction. It is one of the foundation documents of paleontology, and of the 19th century catastrophist school of geology. An argument could be made that it is the most important publication in the history of the natural sciences prior to The Origin of Species. This book has the only English translation of a significant portion of it that I have ever been able to find and it is only one of several texts from Cuvier, Rudwick has translated for this book. Rudwick's comments accompaning the translated texts do a good job of placing them in their proper historical context. This book is obviously not for everyone, but anyone really interested in the historical development of the natural sciences, especially paleontology, zoology and geology will find it fascinating.

                            Book Description

It's a simple plan for each of them. Cathal wants money, Anto wants money and to be with Laura, and Laura wants to escape a life of poverty.

Life however is never that simple.

The three young Dubliners slide down the road of improvisedcrime in an effort to realize their dreams. In a cascade ofclueless effort and bizarre schemes, the three slip further into crime andthe strange life of the Irish underworld.

Unlike the boys, however, Laura has a plan for getting out before she gets in over her head. All she has to do is stay the course until that one big score that will give her a way out of crime and poverty. Sooner or later they have to get there, right? Anto and Cathal have it sussed: after all, how difficult could crime be? The police, their fellow criminals, and those who would not be conned all contribute to the answer as the trio and their friends scramble onwards.

“Turlough O'Neill's keen ear for dialogue and cynical affection for his home country make Floating down the Liffey a delightful romp through Dublin's grimy streets, mingling scrupulously realistic description and expression with the ironic charm of true Irish humour.”

Stephan Grundy, best-selling author of Rhinegold.
