    Book Description

Blends of natural rubber with speciality synthetic rubbers, such as nitrile rubber and ethylene propylene rubbers, have, in the past, failed to combine the best properties of polymers, resulting in a poor return in terms of added value from the blending process. The idea of blending synthetic rubbers with natural rubbe is certainly not a new one, but it is only now that this can be shown to be possible with consistently positive resluts, but eh use of novel techniques which this book describes, giving valuable information on the technology required and the results which can be achieved. Blends of Natural Rubber is an invaluable source of information for all those working in the area of rubber technology and polymer blend technology.

From the supplier: Natural rubber (NR)/EPDM blends have exhibited high hysteresis and poor tensile strength. Such blends containing brominated EPDM (BEPDM), however, exhibit good overall properties. Test results indicate that NR/BEPDM blends exhibit improved curing behavior and offer superior tensile properties and heat resistance. Also discussed is the use of NR/BEPDM blend as a tire sidewall.

From the author: Mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties of the zinc neutralized salts of poly (ethylene co-acrylic acid) (PEA) and its blends with epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) have been studied. Improvement in tensile strength, hardness (Shore-A), and a reduction in elongation at break and tension set with the increase in degree of neutralization of the blend constituents corroborate the existence of hard and rigid domains of ionic clusters in the non-hydrocarbon and flexible backbone chain. The occurrence of a new relaxation peak due to ionic aggregates and the disappearance of the crystalline transition indicates the formation of a new ionic cluster phase in the matrix. A shift in the glass transition temperature towards higher temperature supports the existence of ionic crosslinks in the polymer matrix.

From the author: Maleated natural rubber (MNR) was prepared and used to formulate thermoplastic vulcanizates (TPVs) based on various MNR/PP blends. The influence of mixing methods on the TPVs properties was first studied. We found that mixing all ingredients in an internal mixer provided the TPVs with better mechanical properties. The final mixing torque, shear stress, and shear viscosity of the TPVs prepared with various blend ratios of MNR/PP increased with increasing levels of MNR in the blends. This may be attributed to higher shear viscosity of the pure MNR than that of the pure PP. Furthermore, as evidenced in SEM micrographs, the TPVs are two phase morphologies with dispersed small vulcanized rubber domains in the PP matrix. Therefore, the higher content of PP caused the more molten continuous phase of the flow during mixing and rheological characterization. Tensile strength and hardness of the TPVs increased with increasing levels of PP, while the elongation at break decreased. Furthermore, the elastomeric properties, in terms of tension set, increased with increasing levels of MNR in the blends. This may be attributed to decreasing trends in the size of vulcanized rubber particles dispersed in the PP matrix with an increasing concentration of MNR. POLYM. ENG. SCI., 46:594-600, 2006. From the author: The sorption and diffusion behavior of a series of aromatic solvents through blends of nitrile rubber (NER) and epoxidized natural rubber (ENR) have been studied in the temperature range of 28-70[degrees]C. The effect of blend ratio, penetrant size and temperature on the transport properties was investigated. The relationship between the diffusion behavior and the morphology of the system was examined. Different transport parameters such as diffusion coefficient, permeability coefficient and swelling ratio have been calculated. Experimental permeability coefficients were compared with various theoretical models. The van't Hoff relation was used to compute the thermodynamic parameters.

Life at Small Scale is an astonishing reminder of the wonders of a world that's too small to see with the naked eye. Packed with stunning color photographs and illustrations, the book describes the composition and behavior of a variety of microbes. You'll learn how microbes move, feed, reproduce, and even "learn" in a primitive fashion. In clear and compelling prose, David Dusenbery explains the peculiar constraints of a microbe's existence, such as the overwhelming effects of surface tension and even molecular buffeting.

5 out of 5 stars Unicellular life and a few multiciellular fungi too.......2000-11-26

Easy to read discussion of various topics concerning prokaryotic and eukaryotic unicellular life, although multicellular fungi and learning in simple invertebrates are also considered.

5 out of 5 stars two thumbs up!.......1999-01-14

An insightful, well organized, and superlatively illustrated basic text book in microbial life (Dusenbery includes some more complex forms, using size as a determinant). Written for the science literate layperson, it presents, among many other things, a view of the physical universe of microbial life that had, for me, more than a few "ah, ha's!" My son, a high school junior, also read and appreciated it. I found it in the local library and liked it so much, I'm buying it at Amazon.com and just stopped here to offer this very positive review.

                        Book Description

Volume 1 - Engineering science is presently contributing enormously to the improvement of quality of health and patient care, and physicians, clinical engineers and paramedics are increasingly dependent on high-tech apparatus for diagnosis, therapy or research. This technical revolution has encouraged the use of fluid dynamic principles for solving flow and fluid problems within the cardiovascular system, in extracorporeal circulation and artificial organs. Featuring a collection of expert reviews in lecture note format, Intra and Extracorporeal Cardiovascular Fluid Dynamics: General Principles in Application contains contributions from active members of international biomedical engineering organisations such as the IFMBE, the ISAO, the ESEM, the ESAO and the INFA. A comprehensive introduction for students, it also provides a state-of-the-art guide for investigators working in this fascinating and complex field. Volume 2 - This book contains a collection of expert reviews of new computational techniques to simulate blood-wall interaction in the cardiovascular system. It is the result of two three-day courses organised within the COMETT (Community Action Programme for Education and Training for Technology) programme of the European Community and many of the contributors are active members of international biomedical organisations such as the IFMBE, the ESEM, the ESAO, the INFA, and the ESB. Featuring a collection of expert reviews in lecture note format, the text provides both a comprehensive introduction for students, and a state-of-the-art guide for investigators working in the fascinating and complex field of computational cardiovascular mechanics.

Good contents, but graphics and pagination could be better (it has a fashion of cut&paste) compared with the price. All figures of ch.3 are missing.

I bought this book after reading the reviews, and was surprised to see it for sale in our ship's gift store. It is a frank discussion and specifics about what to do and not do as tips that people who take cruises need to hear. If you want a book that provides in-depth advice about the minute details of which cruise line or ship to take, see your travel agent. On the other hand, if you want a book that will save you money, and learn the behind the scenes realities of making a smart cruise purchase decision - it is "priceless." At least, that was the strong consensus of the 10 people who discussed it at our cruise table dinner.

This book relates cruise info and advice -- things that travel agents usually do not tell you. In my opinion, it is especially important to read if you book cruises over the internet. Well worth the $$$$.

Am I missing something? I bought this book b/c people rated it very highly. As far as I can tell, he spends 100 (very large print) pages telling you to get a good cruise agent.

Here, you go, I am summing up this (small) book: Get a good agent and make him/her work!

Save your $$ on this one, there are may other good, thorough books out there on the lines, the ships and how to choose/book.

                        Book Description

Cruise Ship Doctor rollicks with the outrageous antics of Oliver Loring, M.D., a Harvard emergency physician, amorous bachelor, and an expert ballroom dancer, who takes a gig in the Caribbean on the grandest, most legendary cruise ship on the high seas, the S/S Nordic Blue. Loring rides the tropical waves with a highly eccentric group of passengers and wacky crew members, while he pursues Ulla von Straf, a melancholy and elusive Austrian ballerina. For this “Valentine TV Cruise,” the Nordic Blue hosts Farrelly Farrell, a popular “reality TV” personality, who televises the cruise around the world and exposes frenetic on-board encounters for the cameras. With the talented but neurotic Loring at the center of the turmoil, a tension-filled climax erupts with stunning effects. Call it “Monty Python” meets “The Love Boat” or “Ship of Fools on Dexedrine,” this hilarious sea adventure offers a rousing behind-the-scenes romp through the Caribbean with farcical confrontations and delightful international characters — all of it laced with a tantalizing soupçon of the metaphysical.

4 out of 5 stars Great fun armchair cruising.......2004-03-31

Nearly a laugh out loud romp around a not so typical cruise ship week. There are plenty of descriptive true references to a real cruise ship and the cruising experience to make any cruiser feel at home. But after that, the trip sails into uncharted waters. The characters are quirky and fun, the plot a few degrees off the compass center leaving the reader never certain what direction you are headed in. Don't bother taking the trouble to pack a suitcase, just sit in the sun somewhere and enjoy this armchair trip!

I am sorry it ended. In it, you will learn to love and appreciate the mambo, piano music, bengal tigers, sun over the caribbean, the garden of Eden, and life. Zest for life is Gerry's middle name: when you finish this, you will want to go out, dance and sing!
